Dear Parents and Caregivers
Thank you to our P&C and the team of volunteers who conducted the successful Mothers’ Day stall last Friday. It was wonderful to see our local Kindergarten students as well as all our classes take the opportunity to select something special for Mothers’ Day. I understand that over $1800 was raised which is the result of excellent support from our school community.
Also, thank you to everyone who has already donated to the chocolate drive for Dayboro Day. The Weigh In of chocolate donations will be on Monday 20th May. Members of the P&C will weigh the contributions received from each class throughout the morning session next Monday with the class who has collected the most winning a pizza party. The chocolates received will be used as prizes for the Dayboro State School Chocolate Wheel at Dayboro Day.
Our P&C will also be fundraising at the Election this Saturday with a Sausage Sizzle outside our school hall. Many thanks to all the volunteers who are assisting with this on Saturday.
The major project for our P&C for this year is the provision of air conditioning for our school library, something which we are hoping to achieve this year. Your support of our P&C assists in our school reaching this important goal for our students and our community.
School Photos- Catch Up Date
We have been advised that MSP Photography will be present at school again on Monday 28 October to take photos of any students who were absent from school or are new enrolments to the school. Please note only individual photos will be taken – no group photos are available.
Winter and Flu Season
Winter is almost upon us, bringing cold and influenza season with it. Some of our students (and staff) have already felt the effects of the flu season. Queensland Health’s influenza page, www.qld.gov.au/flu covers the symptoms, how to protect yourself and others from getting sick and discusses appropriate treatments.
Our school will help to prevent the flu from spreading by :
- Encouraging children, staff and visitors to cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze or cough
- Making tissues readily available and ensuring used tissues are disposed of immediately
- Ensuring children and staff wash their hands regularly
- Cleaning our facilities and resources regularly
- Encouraging staff and children with flu-like symptoms to stay at home
If your child catches the flu, please seek medical advice and keep them home until they are feeling well again. Any assistance that can be provided by parents in supporting our school in keeping the flu at bay as much as possible would be most appreciated.
Under 8’s Day
Dayboro State School is pleased to participate in Under 8s Week in 2019.

Our school will be celebrating with a fun filled morning of activities for our Prep-2 students and our local kindergarten students on Friday 24 May from 9.00am – 10.45am.
We also look forward to welcoming our local emergency services as well as students from Bray Park State High School who will assist throughout the morning.
Prep Enrolments -2020
We are already receiving enquiries about our Prep program for 2020. We are pleased to provide information and enrolment information anytime at our school office. However, I am able to advise that our Prep Information and Enrolment Morning will be held on Wednesday 28 August at 9.30am in our School Hall. This will be followed up with Prep interviews for all newly enrolled students from 14-18 October and a Prep Orientation Day on Tuesday 12 November.
If you have a child born between 1 July 2014 – 30 June 2015, he/she is eligible for Prep enrolment at Dayboro State School in 2020. Please note that Dayboro State School has an Enrolment Management Plan in place.
Please check the following link for more information on Dayboro State School's Enrolment Management Plan.
We have had several enquiries regarding enrolling at Dayboro Prep from outside the catchment area. Families who view Dayboro as their school of choice are very welcome to submit an enrolment application, however the outcome of the application will not be advised until late October when available places are allocated in the order of receipt.
I would be pleased if this information could be circulated to people who are known to you and are wishing to enrol in our Prep program in 2020.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be conducted from today- Tuesday 14 May until Thursday 16 May. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. If you have any questions about your child’s participation or preparation around NAPLAN, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the school administration.
Friday 17 May is set aside as a ‘catch up day’ for students that may have been absent for all or part of the testing program.
Woolworths Earn and Learn
Once again, our school has signed up to be part of the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion. In 2017, our school was able to secure over $3000 worth of new
resources for our classrooms.
One Earn and Learn sticker is earned for every $10 of purchases at Woolworths Supermarkets. Please bring your stickers or completed sticker sheets and place them in the collection bin at the school office. Further collection bins for our school are located at Warner, Petrie and Strathpine Woolworths stores.
Principal
Dear Families and Friends
As it is NAPLAN time this week for Year 3 and 5, it is timely to revisit the importance of helping our children to develop and adopt a Growth Mindset. Below is a reminder of the language we use at school to help develop resilience and confidence in all our students.
EXCITING NEWS! Our Class Chocolate Competition Weigh In Continues!
Every year the P and C ask for donations of chocolates for the Chocolate Drop stall they run on Dayboro Day. All funds raised go towards our school. So… we ask that children bring in donations of chocolates- big, small, blocks, fun-sized (just not cooking chocolate please). The chocolates should go straight to the class teacher who then keeps them until the BIG Chocolate weigh IN day! The chocolate collections are then weighed and the winning class receives a Pizza Party at the end of the term. So start bringing those chocolates in and help your class win the prize.
WEIGH IN DAY IS MONDAY 20thMAY!!!!!
Thank you to our organisers and helpers at the Mother’s Day stall last Friday. There was a great range of gifts for children to purchase at reasonable prices. We hope all our Mothers had a wonderful day.

Mother’s Day Stall (11 May)
The first of P&C’s month of May events took place in our School Hall last Friday. Despite some hiccups late in the morning, hearty efforts by P&C members and other family volunteers ensured the stall was an overall success and all classes were fully catered for, and actual proceeds after all expenses indicates that we have in fact done extremely well. Our Principal Mr Drummond drew the three prize winners for the raffle component and the winners have all now been informed of their prizes and will be receiving these shortly. P&C would like to extend a sincere thanks to the stall organisers Kylie Juleff and Karen-Kay Hockings, along with all the other P&C members and family volunteers who provided terrific assistance in the lead up to, and especially throughout the morning and afternoon of the stall. We would also like thank the generosity of Next Level Coatings and Kylie Juleff for providing the prizes for the raffle, along with our local store Treasure Tribe for donations of sales items. Thank you all for making this year’s Mother’s Day Stall such a success, with all the proceeds of course now able to be used towards our School and its students!
Class Chocolate Collection Weigh-in Competition
Please remember that donations of chocs by each class will be weighed at the close of this competition next Monday 20 May. Please help as a volunteer at our Stall if you can, and a volunteer roster has been posted on the P&C’s Facebook page. But don’t forget to vote this Saturday, and if peckish, please consider purchasing something to eat or drink at our Stall.
Dayboro Day (26 May)
Dayboro Day is fast approaching and we will be needing volunteers to assist with our P&C Stall at this major annual Dayboro event. It will be a gold coin donation at each activity, with the bucking bull ride $5.00, and all proceeds raised from this is being kindly donated to our School!

Science, Technology, Engineering, The Arts and Mathematics (STEAM)
STEAM touches every aspect of our lives, from our smartphones to the technologies that enable us to explore the world around us and outer space. It also drives innovation in our fast-changing global economy.
To succeed in this environment, and for Queensland to continue to prosper into the future, our students need a strong foundation in STEAM. The STEAM strategy aligns with Advancing education: An action plan for education in Queensland. The strategy is further complimented by #codingcounts which focuses on coding and robotics in Queensland schools. Our students need to be at the cutting edge of innovation to enable them to become the technology architects of the future.
Dayboro State School is exploring ways to enhance STEAM and coding opportunities in our curriculum. Our Makerspace allows students to explore STEAM activities and problem solving based on individual interest and the professional development and coaching opportunities undertaken by our teaching staff helps to expand their own knowledge, ability to innovate and confidence to inspire our students. Our networking with Bray Park SHS and Pine Rivers SHS is also building capacity across all our schools. To learn more about the state schools' STEAM strategy, view the STEM ‘Schools of the Future’ animation(YouTube video).
Through participation in STEAM opportunities, children learn skills like:
- Collaboration - working with a group to achieve shared goals
- Creativity- new ways of solving problems and developing new ideas
- Critical Thinking- making a decision or forming an opinion by exploring various ideas and sources of information
- Communication- listening and sharing ideas effectively using a variety of tools, such as media and technology

District Athletics Carnival – Wrap up
Well done and congratulations to the 32 students who represented our school at the 10-12 YRS Pine Rivers District Athletics Carnival last week. The weather was nice to our athletes, team managers and officials who did our school very proud. In just two days, staff and students from twenty-seven colleges and primary schools came together to compete, encourage each other, be inspired and find the four best athletes in each track and field event. With so many schools and students competing at this carnival, it made for some outstanding performances and a very large field of athletes.
A big congratulations to Cruz A. who came second in his age group for the 800 race. Cruz will now represent the district at the Metropolitan North Regional Trials on the 4th and 5th of June. We wish Cruz all the very best in his event. Some other excellent results from our team of athletes include, Matilda G. who came 8th place in Discus and 11th in Shot Put, Koby L. finished 11th in his Discus event, Lucy S. only just missed out on a spot in the district team and came 5th in Long Jump, Emily W. got a 7th place for Discus, and both Alfie and Freddie W. came 5th in Discus. Well done to each and every one of our students who did their best. It is always wonderful to see so many of our students interested and eager to represent our school at a district level. I hope to see even more students be a part of our Athletics team next year. If any students from the team wishes to find out their results from the carnival, a full list of results has been pinned up on the Sport Notices board in the CSA.
Finally, a special thank you to our hardworking groundsman, Mr Briskey who arrived at 6:30am at the venue to secure our school a perfect spot for our tent and had everything set up and packed down for us each day. Mrs Cassell for her endless work in selecting our athletics team, sorting through paperwork and being one of our fabulous team managers, and last but not least, Chappy Cam who was there two days in a row, supporting and organising our team of athletes. Thank you for all that you do and keeping sport alive in our school community.
PE Class of the Week
For those that haven’t heard yet, every week one class is selected to be presented with a trophy and certificate of recognition for being the best class in PE. This week the PE trophy and award went to 4B. The students in this class have greatly improved their effort, enthusiasm and concentration in PE, and now I’m looking to see if any other class can do better. Well done 4B!

What’s happening at Helping Hands Dayboro this week?
Last week our children were busy making beautiful craft pieces for Mother’s Day and were very eager to see the reactions when these are received. Our senior children have been helping Miss Jenny clean a drum kit that has been donated for this group of children to enjoy. Our senior girls have been engaging in different works of art this week, including creating a 5D diamond picture. Outside of the house, touch footy has become a favourite again with the weather cooling down and some of our young footy stars are keen to practice their skills. We have also seen enthusiasm for games such as volleyball, four corner tables, basketball, mini golf and giant handball.
Bookings for our winter vacation care are now open. Please note that your child/ren must be enrolled with the service prior to bookings being made. Please see below for how to enrol your child at the service. We have some exciting theme days, incursions and excursions coming up so be sure to book in asap to secure your spot.

HOW TO CONNECT MORE WITH YOUR CHILD Part 2
Ramp up routines
Predictability makes relationships feel safe, particularly for young children. If your little one knows that when you get home with him, there is a set routine that is easy, fun, and involves you both, he will usually be easy to work with, and your time together will be enjoyable. Set things up for smooth sailing by drawing up a chart you can follow together (but no stickers). It might include dinner prep, eating, bath, pyjamas, teeth, toilet, story, songs, and bed. All of this routine increases security and safety, keeps your relationship together, reduces friction, and promises you an easy night.
Night-time nurture
In my parenting programs I encourage parents to offer special nurture at night-time. Talk about sunshine (grateful things), storm clouds (challenges), and rainbows (overcoming difficulties) from your child’s day. Ask them what they’re looking forward to tomorrow. Tell your child you love him. Make bedtime super special.
Traditions
Make the most of the time you have together by establishing some simple and fun traditions. It might be a daily tradition of back-scratches before bed, or a fun wake-up song each morning. It could be a weekly tradition like watching a movie and eating a pizza on a Friday night or having a Super Saturday treat each weekend. You could have a monthly tradition like a camping trip or trip to the same special place. Traditions build memories, strengthen relationships, establish a sense of identity (this is who we are), and make life fun.
Balance ‘me-time’ and ‘we-time’
As draining and frantic as life can be, creating a strong relationship with your child requires you to sacrifice your ‘me-time’ until they are occupied, safe, and happy (and maybe even sleeping!). Researchers have discovered that parents who invest heavily in ‘we-time’ usually need less ‘me-time’, and have better relationships and higher wellbeing when compared to parents who disengage from their kids. And the children do better, too.
It really is all about relationships. The more you put in, the more you’ll get out. You’ll make the most of those few hours you have together each night by spending time connecting.
Have a great week!
See you around the school. J
Chappy Cam
