Good Afternoon Parents and Guardians
Dayboro Explicit Improvement Agenda for 2021
Our wonderful staff, participating in professional learning on the Student Free days, collaborated to review our Dayboro SS performance data celebrating our successes ad planning on what is possible. From this professional collaboration, we have drafted our Explicit Improvement agenda for 2021: Lifting student achievement and engagement through targeted teaching and feedback. As a staff, we are now working on our Annual Implementation Plan to outline our goals as identified through key focus areas in our school’s strategic plan, and also plan for the resources we will need to achieve these goals.
One of our focus areas is lifting achievement in writing. Our students have been engaged in pre-assessments of the writing task for Term 1. As teachers moderate these samples, they are able identify what the students are doing well and already know and what are their next steps, what do they still need to learn. Through careful planning and then targeted teaching, the students will work on their next steps, receiving feedback along the way. We look forward to some amazing writing!

Parent Information Sessions
Well we have had a great start to our Parent Information Sessions! Please remember that we encourage only adult attendance where possible. These Parent Information Sessions will be held in each teacher’s classroom. You do not need to RSVP. We look forward to seeing you.
Facilities
Last week we met with the Project Officer for the building of the PWD (pathway to allow full access to our Library and classrooms for people with disability). This work will commence as soon as the tender process is completed and we look forward to project completing by June 30. We look forward to the added inclusion of all of our community that this pathway will provide.
P&C
It was great to work with our P&C members last night during our Teams meeting. The P&C were able to endorse the term one variations to school routine, our upcoming work to build our pathway allowing for people with disability access, and also discussed ways to contribute to our school programs. Please see the P&C report below.
Student Safety
Just a reminder regarding student safety, especially on pick up. We all have a role to play to ensure that our students get home safely. Please be patient and ensure that you are thinking carefully about driving conservatively around the school. If you need your child to cross the road, please ensure that you are encouraging them to walk across the crossing to keep them safe. Thank you!
Online Services Consent Form
Thank you for continuing to send the updated Dayboro SS Online Service Consent Form to provide permissions for your child/ren to participate in the online learning. Please to complete the attached form and send it back electronically to admin@dayboross.eq.edu.au. Alternatively, we can provide you with a hard copy. Teachers will also have hard copies available at the Parent Teacher conferences.
Have a great week!

Dear Families and Friends
Every year Dayboro State School students learn about our High Five Strategies. These strategies are tools students can use in the playground and school environment to help deal with conflict or a problem situation with other students.
We encourage our students to start at number one when dealing with a problem with their peers and work through the steps until the problem is resolved or needs further assistance.
When a student feels they are in a situation of conflict or disagreement they can do the High Five:
- Talk Friendly – use respectful words to tell the person about the problem in a calm way and suggest ways to solve the problem.
- Talk Firmly – Use a serious voice without yelling to get the message across. Don’t smile or wave arms about. Be assertive but don’t give put downs.
- Ignore – Look away. Don’t smile. Distract yourself by thinking of something else. Do not speak any further with the person.
- Walk Away – Move away from the student involved in the problem. Find a friend or go to the playground or library.
- Report – Ask a teacher for help. In the playground look for the teacher on duty with a high five poster on the back of their folder. Explain the problem to them in an honest way. Tell the teacher the strategies you have used already.
MUSIC NEWS
Now that the days are starting to get warmer please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during play times and PE lessons. The rule is “No Hat, no Play!”
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.
Head Lice
We have had some cases of Head Lice in the school. Below is some information on how to recognise and how to treat Head Lice. We all need to be vigilant around treating Head Lice so that we eradicate any cases in the school.
Head lice are small, wingless insects that live in the hair on your head and can be challenging to eradicate. They can only survive in human hair, need to feed from the scalp several times a day and can only survive up to two days off the person's head. Though not dangerous, head lice are a
common problem for children between the ages of 3 and 11 and have nothing to do with personal hygiene or cleanliness and do not carry disease.
Head lice can crawl onto your scalp when your head touches the head of someone with head lice and, although rare, they can be transferred through a hair brush or hat.
Lice eggs are called nits and are about the size of a small flake of dandruff, but cannot be easily shaken off or brushed out. Lice lay their nits on hair shafts close to the scalp and rely on the warmth of the head to hatch. Nits hatch within one to two weeks of being laid and once attached, the shell
looks white or clear and stays firmly attached to the hair shaft. If lice are not treated, this process repeats itself about every 3 weeks.
Signs and Symptoms:
The first signs that your child may have head lice is a tickling feeling in the hair, frequent scalp itchiness or sores/scabs on the scalp from scratching. It is important to be aware that the itching may not be immediate and in some cases, it can take weeks before your child starts to complain.
Although very small, a single adult louse can be seen and is about the size of a sesame seed. They usually look like tan or brown dots.
Unless the infestation is heavy, it is more likely that you will see nits in your child's hair, rather than lice crawling around. A good method of checking your child's head is by parting the hair in small sections and checking for lice and nits with a fine-tooth comb close to the scalp, behind the ears, and
around the nape of the neck. Good lighting and magnifying glass may help this process, If you are still unsure, and your child is constantly itching and complaining, speak to your health care provider or pharmacist.
Treatment:
Treatment should only be applied when live lice are found on the head. If more than one person in your family has been infested, treatment should be applied at the same time to break the cycle.
There are two methods of treatment:
- Conditioner and combing technique (non-insecticidal treatment)
Conditioner stuns lice and blocks their breathing pores. This, together with the slippery effect of the conditioner, makes it easier to mechanically remove the lice. This treatment method is equally as effective as insecticidal or other chemical treatments but genrerally requires longer treatment
times. However, it may be preferred as a cheaper alternative to insecticidal or other chemical treatments.
Step 1: Generously apply conditioner to dry hair to cover the scalp and the full length of the hair.
Step 2. Untangle the hair with a wide-toothed comb.
Step 3. Place a fine-toothed headlice comb flat against the scalp and draw the comb through each section of hair from the roots to the ends.
Step 4. Wipe the comb after each stroke onto a tissue or paper towel, checking each time for head lice or nits.
Step 5. Comb each section of hair at least five times.
Step 6. Wash the hair as normal.
Step 7. Scrub both combs with an old toothbrush to remove an eggs or lice that may be present.
Repeat the conditioner and combing method every second day to remove young lice as they hatch. Continue for ten or so consecutive days until no lice are found.
- Treatment with synthetic or natural insecticides or other chemicals
There are different forms of treatment of which you can get from the chemist without prescription. All preparations must be applied strictly according to the manufacturer's instructions and none of them should be used on children under two year s of age, except on medical advice. If a product
doesn't seem to work, speak with your chemist about a product with a different active ingredient.
No chemical treatment kills all the eggs.
A second treatment should be applied 7-10 days after the initial treatment to kill the young lice that have hatched from the eggs remaining
from the first treatment.
Do not apply the treatment more than once per week as more frequent applications could lead to scalp problems and have little or no effect.

Welcome back everyone to the 2021 school year at Dayboro State School!
As Head of Department (Curriculum) at Dayboro State School, my role focuses on supporting teachers with planning, teaching, assessing, resourcing and professional development so that as a team we can ensure that all students are successful learners and happy, creative and responsible individuals.
In 2021 our School Improvement Agenda is focused on Writing. Teachers will be embedding the Gradual Release of Responsibility Model for the teaching of Writing and focussing on targeted and specific feedback to students on their writing.
My role also includes managing the Intervention and Extension programs across our school, from intensive small group teaching (Tier 3 students) to organising Opti-MINDS and Extension Days at local high schools.
I am also part of a team that meets weekly to discuss student support needs across the school and plan strategies to address these needs. This team includes the Deputy Principal, the Guidance Officer and our Inclusive Education teachers.
If you have any questions regarding Curriculum, Intervention or Extension programs at the school, please come and have a chat (LEAP room, B block) or contact the office and I will phone you.
Regards, Linda Smith

In some of my health lessons I have talked about various opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get out and about and be active, including the Moreton Bay Healthy and Active Program.
After one student asked me to write it down for her so she could show her parents I thought that maybe I should share it with you all. Moreton Bay run a huge variety of physical activities for younger children, teenagers, adults and families which are free or low cost. Such activities include but are in no way limited to rock climbing, abseiling, parkour, trampolining, archery, yoga, pilates, dance, orienteering, skateboard and scooter clinics, mountain biking, high ropes courses, commando courses, croquet, kayaking, windsurfing and building catapults.
My family (consisting of myself, my husband and two boys now in high school) have participated in a range of these activities over the years and continue to do so. Sometimes it has led one or more of us to participate in an activity regularly, other times it's just a once-off for fun or family time.
If you haven't heard of the program before and are interested I would highly recommend going online to the link below for Healthy and Active Moreton, Moreton Bay Regional Council and checking it out.

PINE RIVERS DISTRICT - SWIMMING TRIALS
The ‘Pine Rivers District - Primary School Swimming Trials’ take place on Wednesday February 17th, at the Lawnton Pool. We are pleased to say that fourteen Dayboro State School children will be attending on this day. Selection is based on meeting certain qualifying times (set by district management), and these times were obtained from the Senior Swimming Carnival held late last year.
Congratulations to: Regan W, Tilly W, Sienna L, Max S, Kade J, Xavier Z, Brodie W, Ella H, Bronte W, Eden W, Chloe P, Lachlan M, Jedda L and Carla B. Thank you to all parents who have made themselves available to help the children attend these swimming trials – this is very much appreciated. Thank you also for being so flexible with working around the ‘No Spectators’ policy.
Please wear your Dayboro SS navy/gold sports uniform shirt to the pool for easy identification and team impact! Also, remember to pack a good lunch and plenty of fluids for your children, along with all necessary swimming gear (including a swimming cap – important!) There will be a canteen available. Best of luck to you all, we hope it is a great competition!

Welcome back!
Welcome back for the 2021 school year. We trust everyone had an enjoyable break and managed to squeeze in some reading during the summer holidays!
New Books
We have had our first delivery of books for the year. When book orders are placed we aim to include titles that we know our students will enjoy such as books by popular authors or books that are new titles in a popular book series.
Students are welcome to suggest books to include in our Library collection.

Borrowing
It has been fantastic to see so many enthusiastic borrowers come to the Library already this year! Our goal is to foster a love of reading by helping children to select a book they will enjoy and not find overly challenging to read. During class visits we have been discussing the “just right” strategy for students to use when selecting books. This strategy empowers students to select books that will allow them to read with independence, but still provide them with an opportunity to improve their reading.
Students will require a library bag in order to borrow books from the Library as this helps to protect the books while they are on loan. Students who are in need of a library bag are welcome to come along to the Library during lunch breaks to make a bag of their own to use for borrowing.
Books can be exchanged on any day during breaks, students do not have to wait until their class borrowing day.
Maker Space
Maker space is up and running again and is already proving to be a popular choice for our students during breaks each day. We have seen some amazing inventions being produced at the crafting table. Robots and Osmo challenges have been very popular at first break and it is wonderful to see so many of our students willing to share with one another so that everyone gets a turn.
Our younger classes have been practising playing board games during their Library visits over the last week so that they are able to play games independently during the breaks.

Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
Good Afternoon
Our children have settled back into before and after school care routines quickly, and it has been great meeting all our new families. Thank you to our children for welcoming new children with enthusiasm. Children have been participating in various activities both indoor and outdoor, including basketball, obstacle course, soccer, skipping, board games, doll houses and building various things with magnetic tiles and large wooden block. It has also been great to see our new children sharing activity and menu ideas in our weekly children's meeting; this meeting gives children the opportunity to contribute to the program for the following week.
