Dear Parents and Caregivers
I would like to take the opportunity to express my gratitude to the school community for the support of the Book Fair which was held last week. Over $6000 in books were purchased by students and families resulting in a commission of about $1800 which will be used to purchase new resources for our Library. A big thank you is extended to Mrs Wilkinson, Library Staff and P&C Volunteers for ensuring this was another great success for our school community.
In other successes, our two teams who competed in the annual Readers Cup were successful in achieving a fifth and second place in a field of 36 teams from many of our district schools. The competition was held recently at Kurwongbah State School. This is a wonderful result for our school and one which reinforces the great emphasis we place upon literacy and reading achievement. Once again, thankyou to Mrs Wilkinson for coordinating this event for our school and a big congratulations to all the students involved!
Thank you to our school community for supporting the recent Ice-Cream day raising over $350 for the Queensland Cancer Fund. Another Ice-Cream Day to raise funds for Student Council Activities will be held in Term 3.
Staff News
It is a pleasure to welcome back Mrs Jess Hitchens from Maternity Leave in Term 3. Mrs Hitchens will share Year 3OH with Mrs Oberg and will work the first three days of every week.
Also returning from Long Service Leave at the beginning of Term 3 is Mrs Susan O’Dwyer who will return to Year 2MO on Thursdays and Fridays.
Cold and Flu Season
Winter is upon us, bringing cold and influenza season with it . Many of our students (and staff) have already felt the effects of the flu season. Queensland Health’s influenza page , www.qld.gov.au/flu covers the symptoms, how to protect yourself and others from getting sick and discusses appropriate treatments.
Our school is helping to prevent the flu from spreading by :
- Encouraging children, staff and visitors to cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze or cough
- Making tissues readily available and ensuring used tissues are disposed of immediately
- Ensuring children and staff wash their hands regularly
- Cleaning our facilities and resources regularly
- Encouraging staff and children with flu-like symptoms to stay at home
If your child catches the flu, please seek medical advice and keep them home until they are feeling well again. Any assistance that can be provided by parents in supporting our school in keeping the flu at bay as much as possible would be most appreciated.
Lost Property
The winter season has just begun and already our lost property receptacle is looking quite full. The students have been reminded about the need to check the stockpile for lost clothing or lunch boxes. If any parents are aware that a child is missing some pieces of clothing, please check and see if it can be recovered from the lost property in the CSA. Are all pieces of clothing clearly marked with student’s names?
Dogs in the School
Dayboro State School is a designated workplace, and as such strict Education Department policies exist around Workplace Health and Safety for staff, students and community members. As part of these policies, could I please remind our school community that dogs are not permitted inside the school grounds at any time. Service animals are excluded from this policy. Signs are erected on the school fences which display the Departmental policy.
I would like to thank everyone for your cooperation in ensuring that our school remains a safe environment for everyone.
Woolworths Earn and Learn
Thankyou to everyone who has supported this promotion to date. As of Monday 17 June, we have collected over 23000 stickers. The promotion runs until Tuesday 25 June so there is still another week collect and return the stickers. Spare collections sheets are available at the school office.
In 2017, we were able to purchase about $3000 worth of classroom supplies for our students as a result of the Earn and Learn campaign.
Winter Disco – This Friday Night
Our School Disco will be held this Friday 21 June ( P-2: 5.30pm-6.30pm and Years 3-6 : 7.00pm-8.30pm). Our Student Council has decided upon the theme of “The Wild West” for this year’s event. All Dayboro State School Students are welcome to attend this free entry event.

We are already receiving enquiries about our Prep program for 2020. We are pleased to provide information and enrolment information anytime at our school
office. However, I am able to advise that our Prep Information and Enrolment Morning will be held on Wednesday 28 August at 9.30am in our School Hall. This will be followed up with Prep interviews for all newly enrolled students from 14-18 October and a Prep Orientation Day on Tuesday 12 November.

Families who view Dayboro as their school of choice are very welcome to submit an enrolment application, however the outcome of the application will not be advised until late October when available places are allocated in the order of receipt.
I would be pleased if this information could be circulated to people who are known to you and are wishing to enrol in our Prep program in 2020.

Dear Families and Friends
At Dayboro we have a carefully planned program for selecting our School Leaders the following year. The selection process involves a written application, an interview with our Leadership team and a prepared speech to their teachers and peers. This process starts in Term 4 and applications and interviews occur early in Term 4 every year.
The School Captains and the rest of the Yr. 6 Leadership team are then involved in many leadership opportunities throughout the year of their tenure. They assist with Sports Carnivals, help out with Under 8’s days, attend Student Leader Cluster meetings, undergo Leadership workshops and are generally seen as important role models for other students.
Last Tuesday, our School Captains, from 6C and 5/6F, were also very fortunate to attend a special Cluster visit to Parliament House at the invitation of our local MP, Ms Nikki Boyd. Over 30 school leaders from schools in our local area attended. Our leaders got to see our Parliament at work, with the Budget about to be handed down and many of our MP’s walking around in discussions. They visited the Legislative chambers, the old and new Parliamentary annexes and had an amazing lunch provided for us on the rooftop level overlooking the Brisbane River and South Bank. As always, our School Captains represented our school with pride. They were highly engaged and participated with respect and thoughtfulness. They answered some very challenging questions and weren’t afraid to speak up. Congratulations Max, Amy, Zaisha and Oscar on representing Dayboro so well! You certainly lead by example and hopefully will inspire our current Year 5 students to apply for leadership positions in 2020!

What do you know about the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics?
The Australian Curriculum: Mathematics provides students with essential mathematical skills and knowledge in number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability. It develops the numeracy capabilities that all students need in their personal, work and civic life, and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications of mathematics are built.
The curriculum focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. These proficiencies enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematical strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently.

Understanding your child’s report card
Dear Parents,
Our reporting process is driven largely by Federal and State Government requirements, which include the use of a five point scale for reporting children’s achievement. This scale is used to indicate how well a student is achieving in relation to the Australian Curriculum Achievement Standards.
At Dayboro State School teachers report to parents about:
- the learning expectations for the student;
- the student’s achievement against expected standards;
- how well the student is engaging with the expected learning; and
- how the student may be able to improve.
The current 5-point scale for achievement is based on attainment standards called “benchmarks of achievement” or “criteria.” So what makes an “A”, “B”, “C” etc. is predetermined by a scale of achievement matched to the Year Level Achievement Standard in each Key Learning Area of the Australian Curriculum (English, Mathematics, Science, HASS, The Arts, HPE, Technologies and LOTE).
This is what you could consider what a “C” really means:
- A “C” no longer means that the student is simply in the middle of the class. It means that the student has met the criteria for a learner to be at the appropriate age level.
- A “C” means that the student is doing everything required at their year level at school.
- The best description is to say that a “C” means that the student’s academic development is exactly where it needs to be. That means attaining a “C” for Achievement means you are ON TARGET for your age level!
With all of this in mind, we must accept that it may be harder to get an “A” or “B” than it used to be. These grades are no longer awarded simply to the top students in the class. They are only given to students who show that they are independently capable of working at a higher level than expected for their year level.
So what does all the information above mean?
- Many parents are likely to see more “C” grades on their child’s report cards.
- An “A” for Effort and a “C” for Achievement indicates that your child is “On Target” for their age. (This grade should be celebrated with students because it means they have worked hard to be where they need to be.)
- The “Effort” grades are also really important because they are a reflection of how, in the teacher’s opinion, the student is working consistently in class in that learning area (English, Maths, Science etc).
If you have any further queries, please see Mrs Smith or your child’s teacher.
Regards, Linda Smith

Readers Cup Competition
On Thursday, eight of our Year 6 students participated in the Readers Cup Competition at Kurwongbah State School. Our two teams performed amazingly well across the 5 rounds of intense questioning. We are very proud to announce that our two teams achieved a final ranking of 2nd and 5th in this regional competition.
All of our team members should be very proud of their efforts in preparing for this competition and for the dedication they have shown in becoming so knowledgeable about the books they were assigned to read.
The students also had an opportunity to meet, and have books signed by, guest author Samantha Wheeler who was the MC for the event. Samantha wrote one of the assigned books for this competition, “Wombat Warriors”.
Well done Gaya A, Lily L, Max S, Jonah C, Molly P, Lily P, Zaisha D, and Kirrilee H!

Book Fair Thanks
Now that Book Fair has wrapped up for 2019, we would like to extend a very big “Thank you” to our Dayboro families. This year a little over $6000 worth of books was sold at the Book Fair with a percentage of sales allocated to the Library to purchase resources. The funds raised through this venture will be used to purchase books that have been requested by students.
We would also like to thank the P&C for their help and support during the Book Fair and Cara D for all of her time and effort in ensuring Book Fair ran smoothly.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
A reminder to keep on reading – every book counts!
Thank you,
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
Year 6 Multimedia Advertising
Students in Years 5/6F and 6C have been working hard to design and present a multimedia advertising campaign to promote a place of significance or an important community issue.
In addition to crafting a persuasive text to entice readers to discover more about the nominated important place or issue, students needed to select and edit images and make use of an appropriate colour palette to add impact. Students also used hyperlinks within their PowerPoint presentation to enable easy navigation to all sections of their campaign.

Typing Skills
Students in Years 2 – 6 have access to an on-line typing program called “Typing Tournament”. The aim of this program is to build confidence with typing skills and to develop familiarity with location of keys on a computer keyboard. Students are also able to access this program from home using their username and password.
Each level of the program is progressively more challenging than the previous level. A growth mindset and an attitude of persistence are really important when beginning new levels! Students are always excited to earn rewards and are proud of their achievements as they master each new level within the program.

This week we have been very excited to try out various new games that arrived at the service. There were a variety of games to suit the varying ages and interests, including suspend – a game for our older children that encouraged children to use problem solving skills to hang rods on hooks without knocking the other rods down. Each rod that was hung would change the balance of the rods, but the outcome would remain the same. Our younger children were excited to try jumping frog hoppers into the bucket with their finger. We were also excited to try out some of our outdoor games including giant naught and crosses, twister and draughts.
Our usual favourite games such as oz tag, red rover, touch footy, oz tag and handball continued to occupy our children outside. We have also been exploring different art and crafts including origami, water colour painting, flick painting and dot painting.
A reminder in the cooler weather to make sure your child/ren have a jumper in their bags as well as a hat and drink bottle.
Vacation care is fast approaching, and we have exciting excursions to the dairy farm in Maleny and ten pin bowling. We are preparing some great theme days at the service including footy fever, hawaiian day and beading day. Children must be enrolled at the service before bookings can be made, please see below for how to do this.
Homework club runs from 4:30-5:00pm Monday-Thursdays. Please let one of our friendly team know if you would like your child to be included in this.
We welcome all new families to the service, Helping Hands Dayboro requires online enrolment forms to be completed before attending the service. Online bookings and enrolments can be made through the iParent Portal which can be access through the Helping Hands Network site by selecting Dayboro as your service and signing up following the prompts. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.
