Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome back to Term 2.
It was a pleasure that our students from Dayboro State School took centre stage during the ANZAC Day commemorations held at school and in our local community. Last Wednesday, our school leaders led a commemorative service before an audience of parents, peers and invited community members. Our school choir presented a very polished version of “The Last Anzac” and excelled in presenting the Maori version of the New Zealand National Anthem .
It was wonderful to have over 35 students march in the annual parade before joining our choir and band at the community service at the showgrounds.
Congratulations to our school leaders, our school choir and school band for their wonderful presentations at this showcase event for our community. Thank you to Ms Janet Almond and Mr John Smallcombe for their hard work in preparing our students so well.
Collectively over 65 students attended the community event and a big thankyou is extended to our many parents for your support on this very special day.
A Special Presentation to a Staff Member Mary Albrow on ANZAC Day
A highlight of the community ceremony was the presentation to Mary Albrow of her late Father’s military medals in miniature together with a certificate outlining his full service history. An absolutely delighted Mary was surprised to be presented with this and I am sure she will treasure this for many years to come. Mary’s note to me on receiving the certificate and medals is below.
‘Never be afraid to ask! I asked a group of people from the R.S.L. who just happened to be enjoying a coffee at the table next to me if they knew anything about medals. They took a look and offered to help. They researched my Father’s English Military history and presented me with the information and my father’s medals framed on Anzac Day. Thank you Dayboro R.S.L. and Graham for doing all the research and making my day!’

Dogs in the School
Dayboro State School is a designated workplace, and as such strict Education Department policies exist around Workplace Health and Safety for staff, students and community members. As part of these policies, could I please remind our school community that dogs are not permitted inside the school grounds at any time. Service animals are excluded from this policy. Signs are erected on the school fences which display the Departmental policy.
I would like to thank everyone for your cooperation in ensuring that our school remains a safe environment for everyone.

IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
Education Queensland has issued advice to schools regarding the administration of medications to students.
All medication, including over‐the‐counter medications, e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen or alternative medications, are identified as drugs or poisons that may cause side effects. As such, the school requires medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner, e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist, to administer any medication to students, including those bought over‐the‐counter.
Unlike parents/guardians, school employees are unaware of a student’s complete medical history, and are unable to provide ongoing, direct supervision of the student for the course of their illness. They are therefore unlikely to recognise if a student is having adverse effects to any medications administered. Health practitioners also have knowledge of medical history in order to determine which over‐the‐counter medications are appropriate, dosage amounts and potential side effects or interactions with other medications.
What you need to know:
- The school can no longer administer any medication, including over‐the‐counter medications, e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen or alternative medications identified as drugs or poisons that may cause side effects, to students without medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist.
- Medical authorisation from a pharmacist cannot be accepted.
- Over‐the‐counter medications currently stored at the School will no longer be administered to students without medical authorisation.
- Listed emergency contacts for the student are able to personally attend the school and administer over‐the‐counter medications to their child if they do not wish to obtain medical authorisation.

Parking on School Grounds
Just a reminder to families that there is no parking on the school grounds. Parking can be on either McKenzie Street or Cruice Street. Please refrain from parking on the ground near/behind the hall. Please also be mindful during drop off and pick up times that parents are parking legally, and not obstructing driveways or roads. The safety of our students is paramount, we are asking for everyone’s assistance in this.
Voluntary Contributions
Last term we introduced an electronic payment method for our Voluntary Contributions. This was extremely successful; and will allow our students to receive classroom resources, home readers and other consumables to enhance their learning activities in Literacy, Numeracy, Science, Art and Technology.
If you haven’t yet donated to the Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme, you can still do so. The below details outline the cost involved, as well as a link to pay online. Payments can be made directly to the school also via Cash or EFTPOS.
The costs involved in the Voluntary Financial Contributions are:
- $50 per student; or
- $100 per family of two or more enrolled students.
The Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme is approved by the P&C each year, and is aligned to the Department of Education policy requirements.
To pay the Voluntary Contributions online, click here for a direct link to BPOINT.
Excursions
This term at Dayboro State School we have many excursions and incursions for our students, some with costs associated. We are planning to have these invoiced early to allow parents enough time to pay before the cut-off time.
If there are any parents/families that are struggling with payments, we are able to arrange a Payment Plan. Payment Plans will allow families to process invoices in a timeframe that is agreeable to themselves and the school. For more information, contact the office.
Kind regards,
Clare Ingham
Business Manager
Hi All
Thanks to those that attended the meeting last night. With the holidays in the way, it was not our usual 2nd Monday of the month.
Tomorrow marks the start of “Mad May”, we have Mothers Day stall, Election Day BBQ and Dayboro Day all happening in May.
As per previous years, donations of chocolates are requested for the Dayboro Day stall and the class that collects the most chocolate, by weight, will be rewarded with a pizza party. Children can start bringing chocolates into their class teacher from today. The class Weigh In will take place on Monday 20th May so all chocolates need to be in by this date. The winning class will be announced at the following Monday Assembly.
Please keep an eye on the Facebook page for further information and requests for more fantastic volunteers to help make these events a success.
Right Brain Decoding, Phonics and Spelling Program
Dayboro State School’s Right Brain Decoding, Phonics and Spelling Program was developed by a previous Learning Support Teacher at our school, Trudy Brooks, and is implemented in all classes from Prep to Year 3. All teacher aides have also been trained to work with students on this program.
Trudy developed the Right Brain program in consultation with James Cook University when she was studying why some children struggled to learn to read. The program uses a problem-solving approach to develop students’ understanding of how the English alphabet system works. This understanding enhances students’ decoding and spelling ability and is a precursor to the Spelling Program used in Years 4-6.
The core of this program is explicit teaching, to distinguish each sound first, using pictures, and then attaching a letter or letters to that sound. It is essential in Prep that students learn to identify, discriminate, blend and manipulate sounds. A different sound is focused on each week from Prep to Year 3 and regular assessment occurs to track student progress.
If you would like any further information about this program, please see any of our P-3 teachers or Mrs Smith. Look out for our Parent Information Session on the Right Brain program during Term 2.
Regards, Linda Smith

The book ‘Grusilda’ even comes with puppets to enhance the reading of the book. Thankyou Nicki for your support with purchasing new and engaging high quality readers for the students at Dayboro State School.
Welcome Mrs T
We welcome Mrs Alicia Tavelardis (Mrs T), as SEP Teacher, to Dayboro SS. Alicia is an experienced Special Education Teacher who works across two local schools. She will be working at Dayboro SS on Monday and Tuesday. Alicia is replacing Mrs Carmel Bridger, who is currently on leave. Students and parents, please make Mrs T welcome by saying “Hi” to her around the school or popping into the SEP on Monday or Tuesday. We are located next to the LEAP room.
Allergy reminder
Dayboro SS supports students diagnosed with anaphylaxis or at risk of anaphylaxis and uses a range of strategies to reduce allergens in school.
We have one student in Year 4 with NUT allergy and ask parents in Year 4 not to send any nut containing products in lunchboxes. Parents in other grades are kindly requested to refrain from sending nuts also. This is not a ban, but a strategy put into place to reduce the chance of a student at risk of anaphylaxis coming into contact with their allergen. Some of our strategies include: not sharing food, handwashing and education for students and community members.
Further information on Anaphylaxis Management can be found here:
Thanking you,
Tracey and Alicia

CHAPPY CHATZ - RESILIENCE
Resilience means getting the brain’s neurochemistry right, says Andrew Fuller, Clinical Psychologist and Director of Resilient Youth Australia. He shares his thinking about resilience, and how to activate a child’s brain to help them manage trauma in a healthy, timely way.
What does the term ‘resilience’ mean to you? What does it look like?
I look at resilience as the flexibility to respond to what life throws at you; as the internal and external resources we call upon in times of adversity. If resilience is compromised, or if you don’t ever develop it, you can’t fully capitalise on your ability to be flexible. Resilience is a protective factor for many things, including trauma, which, as I like to say, helps you ‘bungee jump through the pitfalls of life.’
What strategies can parents use to build children’s resilience after a trauma?
- Talk about it
Parents need to start by talking to their child and recognising that the traumatic event has happened. Gone are the days when parents would shield their kids from adversity. Instead, parents should address the issue honestly so kids can express their feelings and don’t worry unduly.
- Involve kids in taking action
There are many ‘doing’ processes following a family trauma (eg a funeral), which kids can take part in. If you’re recovering from a local event (eg a natural disaster), offer support to another affected family or the community as a family unit. Taking action helps processing and boosts empowerment.
- Seek help if you need it
Often, when we’re in fight/flight mode we repeat and even increase unhelpful behaviours, like arguing. Somebody outside of the fray (eg a therapist or even a good friend) can provide much-needed clarity and strength to support kids.
You may need to use mindfulness & meditation techniques to help your child to develop their resilience. These can be taught straight away so that when something does happen, it will be easy to have your child bounce back from it.
Have a great week!
See you around the school.
Chappy Cam

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY
The Pine Rivers District Cross Country trials were held on Friday 5th of April. All students participating were very excited to be there and even though the weather looked gloomy, it ended up being an amazing day.
The Dayboro team have been training since the start of the year for this event, with nine making it through to qualifying. We can applaud Dayboro students and their families for their team spirit and kindness to all teams competing. The encouragement they gave competitors, as they ran past the crowd, was wonderful to see.
This event has anywhere from 80-120 competitors in some races but nothing could dull the Dayboro spirit to get in there and give it a go. To make it home in the first eight and gain selection for the Pine Rivers District team is certainly a great achievement and 2 of our students achieved this.
Congratulations to Cruz 5H for coming 1st and Rohnan 5H for coming 7th in the 10 years boys; Zaisha 6C for coming 10th (second reserve) in the 11 years girls; Cruz and Rohnan will be competing (and Zaisha eagerly waiting for a call up) in the Metropolitan North Cross Country at St Pauls School, Bald Hills on Tuesday 28th of June 2019. We wish them the very best of luck!
It really was amazing to see how many people turned up to show their support for our students. Thank you to all parents who helped with transport on the day and supporting the team.

PINE RIVERS DISTRICT – TRACK AND FIELD TRIALS
The ‘Pine Rivers District Track and Field Trials’ take place next Tuesday 7th May and Wednesday 8th May (week 3 of this term) at John Oxley Reserve, Ogg Rd, Murrumba Downs. We are pleased to say that 31 Dayboro State School children have been selected for our school team. These children will attend on either or both of the two days. Selection is based on meeting certain qualifying distances and times (set by district management), and these were obtained from the Senior Track and Field Carnival held last term.
Congratulations to: Chrystian, Benjamin, Alfie, Freddie, Cruz, Rohnan, Lincoln, Matilda, Emily, Lucy, Jedda, Sophie, Riley, Zeke, Mitchell, Koby, Sonny, Will, Harry, Leah, Lulu, Kira, Amy, Ashley, Charlie, Darcy, Jayden, Katelyn, Yazmin, Clare and Kirrilee. Best of luck to all these children, we hope it is a great competition and that they enjoy the experience!
All paperwork is now due. Once signed by the Principal it will be kept by the team managers and passed on to the convenors should any child qualify for the Pine Rivers District team. Payment needs to be completed online before papers are handed in to the school. All children need to go to the uniform shop this Thursday morning to be fitted with the school athletics singlet.
Parents, please remember to pack a good meal and plenty of fluids for your children, along with all their necessary gear. There is no entry fee for spectators, and there will be a BBQ/canteen available on the day for all attending. Thank you to all parents who are making themselves available to attend these trials and/or helping out with transport – this will be very much appreciated. Mrs Braun will be at the carnival on Tuesday, Mrs Cassell will be in attendance on Wednesday and Chappy Cam will be there on both days. We are all looking forward to seeing you there.
