Welcome to our 2023 Student Leaders!
This week, we congratulated and awarded badges to our School Captains, House Captains and Vice Captains, Band and Choir Captains, Indigenous Ambassador and Environmental Captain at our School Leader Investiture. We are excited to work with our student leadership team as they represent our students and super importantly support our students to participate and enjoy school life. I encouraged all students to say hello to our leaders when they see them around the school and have a chat with them about any problems they are having or any ideas for our wonderful school. We know that these students are excellent listeners, and also want the very best for our community. Thank you very much to our Special Guest Nikki Boyd for coming to our Assembly to present our School Leaders with their badges.
Our Student Council representatives, elected by their own class mates, were also inducted. Our Student Council, made up of the class representatives including our school captains, our Indigenous Ambassador and our Environment Captain collect ideas and listen to the student voice from their elected classes to bring ideas and feedback to the Student Council. This group then makes decisions about how to help our students, our school and our community.
We look forward to a productive and harmonious year as these students guide our student body demonstrating their responsibility and kindness!
Dayboro State school Explicit Improvement Agenda for 2023
Our wonderful staff, participating in professional learning on the student free days, collaborated to review our 2022 DSS performance data celebrating our successes and plan towards what is possible for 2023. We also spent some time at the end of last year looking at our community response, both parents and students in our School Opinion Survey, to analyse what the community identify as our strengths here at Dayboro SS and what areas we could strengthen.
From this professional collaboration and data analysis, we have drafted our Explicit Improvement Agenda for 2023 which we believe supports all of our students to be engaged and successful:
To develop, lead and monitor an explicit improvement agenda focused on:
- Excellence – in pedagogy - investing in staff to enact high impact pedagogies matched to students’ next steps extending our student learning
- Equity – through differentiation - build inclusive practices in our differentiated teaching and learning and targeted adjustments to ensure all students achieve
We have also drafted our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) to outline our goals as identified through key focus areas in our school’s strategic plan, and also plan for the resources we will need to achieve these goals. At our first P&C meeting, I will discuss this AIP to provide clarity and ask for feedback. If you have registered for the meeting, you should receive a copy of the draft document prior to the meeting to have a read.

Parent Information Sessions
Thank you to parents who were able to engage in the face-to-face or notes from the recent Class Information Sessions. You have acknowledged our amazing teachers for communicating the parent information to assist you in understanding the organisation of your child/ren’s classroom.
As we varied our organisation for the Information Sessions this year, I have asked for feedback from the community and our staff to reflect on processes that are the most suitable for our whole community.
Thanks for continuing to foster this partnership with your child’s teacher in your child’s education!

Dear Families and Friends
High Five Strategies
Every year Dayboro State School students learn about our High Five Strategies. These strategies are tools students can use in the playground and school environment to help deal with conflict or a problem situation with other students.
We encourage our students to start at number one when dealing with a problem with their peers and work through the steps until the problem is resolved or needs further assistance.
When a student feels they are in a situation of conflict or disagreement they can do the High Five:
- Talk Friendly – use respectful words to tell the person about the problem in a calm way and suggest ways to solve the problem.
- Talk Firmly – Use a serious voice without yelling to get the message across. Don’t smile or wave arms about. Be assertive but don’t give put downs.
- Ignore – Look away. Don’t smile. Distract yourself by thinking of something else. Do not speak any further with the person.
- Walk Away – Move away from the student involved in the problem. Find a friend or go to the playground or library.
- Report – Ask a teacher for help. In the playground look for the teacher on duty with a high five poster on the back of their folder. Explain the problem to them in an honest way. Tell the teacher the strategies you have used already.

PLAYGROUP
We would like to see if any parents in our Dayboro school community or outside our school, would be interested in coming along to a playgroup that would be run by and held at Dayboro school. We would like to provide an opportunity for parents of younger children, in our community to meet and have their children engage in high quality play-based learning and socialisation activities provided by a trained facilitator, usually a member of our school staff.
If this is something you would be interested in attending with your younger child, please let us know so we can start to see if we would have enough interest so we can start looking at providing this wonderful opportunity for our Dayboro families.
Call our office 34256111 and please leave your name and phone number so we can start to get an idea of numbers interested. We will then ring you and let you know if we will push ahead and give you more details.

Attention all parents that volunteer in classrooms.
Thank you for expressing an interest to help out in your child's classroom. Every year we hold a parent/ volunteer induction session to fill you in on the latest information around helping out at school. We encourage all parents who volunteer anywhere in lour school setting- tuckshop, sports, classrooms to attend.

Good Afternoon Dayboro SS Families
Thank you to everyone who assisted with the Welcome BBQ last Thursday. We had plenty of helpers who either signed up on the volunteer register or stopped by to see if they could lend a hand on the afternoon. A big thanks to each of you!
This is the first time we have done a Welcome BBQ on the Information Evening. We’d love to know what you think so we can make it even better for everyone next year, so please don’t be shy, the more feedback the better.
Tuckshop
Thank you to all those parents who have signed up to help in the tuckshop this term. We’ve managed to fill quite a few spots but there is still room if anyone would like to help out on a Wednesday or Friday.
Please contact Alison at tuckshop@dayboropandc.org.au if you would like to be involved.
Uniform Shop
Thank you to everyone for your patience last Thursday morning. We had many eager parents lining up to purchase new Sports Shirts for all the Prep students and new families. Next Meeting – Monday 13th February 2023
Our next P&C Meeting will be online, to attend please contact secretary@dayboropandc.org.au for meeting details.
We would love to see you there!
AGM – Monday 13th March 2023
Did you know that all positions become available at the AGM?
The P&C must have a minimum of two elected officers to continue operating. At the AGM in 2022, our P&C only had a Secretary and Treasurer.
As you can imagine, this is a huge undertaking for two people. With both Mia and Jo stepping down from their roles as Secretary and Treasurer this year, we are now calling on all Dayboro State School families to consider getting involved.
Joining the P&C, or taking on a role, is a great way to play an active role in building our school community. Your participation, no matter how big or small, WILL make a BIG difference.
If you are considering getting involved but not sure where to start, or would like to get a better understanding of the roles, let’s chat. We can catch up for a coffee, or gather a group of friends together. Send me an email at president@dayboropandc.org.au, or leave your details with the office and I will give you a call.
Next year Dayboro State School celebrates 150 years! It is such an exciting time for the school and community, and no better time to get involved.

P&C President
New Books
We have a selection of new books available for students to borrow – keep an eye out for the next volume in your favourite book series. We were able to purchase these new books for our Library collection using rewards points that the school earns when students purchase books through Book Club and Book Fair.
Borrowing
It has been fantastic to see so many enthusiastic borrowers come to the Library already this year! When children borrow books we are hoping to foster a love of reading by helping children to select a book they will enjoy and with just the right amount of challenge. During class visits we have been discussing the “just right” strategy for students to use when selecting books. This strategy empowers students to select books that will allow them to read with independence, but still provide them with an opportunity to improve their reading.
Students who are in need of a Library bag can come to the Library to can make their own bag during lunch break in the maker space. Books can be exchanged at first break and second break each day, students do not have to wait until their class borrowing day to exchange books.
Australian Reading Hour
This year Australian Reading Hour is moving to Thursday 9th March. Keep an eye out for more information over the coming weeks, or check out the Australian Reading Hour website.
Maker Space
We have had a busy start to the year in the maker space. We have had children coming along to make items of their own creation as well as completing some of the challenges.
We would like to ask for some household recyclables to be donated for students to use in the Maker Space, in particular we are asking for cardboard boxes (e.g. cereal boxes, muesli bar boxes etc). Please do not send egg cartons along, we have a large supply at school already as we must use new cartons due to possible contamination risks for students with an egg allergy.
Thank you.

With only one coach available numbers are currently limited to 15 and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Details are as follows:

DISTRICT SPORTS TRIALS

netball, baseball, golf, basketball, squash, AFL
SKIPPING YEAR 1 AND 2
Students in year one and two are currently developing their skipping skills with long and short ropes while at the same time improving their fitness and coordination. They will be assessed at the end of the term on simple skipping skills. I have encouraged students to practise at home if they can. If your child does not have a skipping rope and would like to practise I can arrange for a short loan of a school rope. If you would like to take advantage of this offer please email me on cxmar5@eq.edu.au
CROSS COUNTRY TRAINING
Beginning next week for yr 3-6, and the week after for year P-2, all classes will be practising their cross country during PE lessons. Please ensure they have a hat and water bottle. Hats are required for PE outside and there is only a single water tap on the oval. If your child has any legitimate reason why they should not participate in the full cross country practise please let either myself or the class teacher know.
Before and after school cross country training commences on 20th February. Permission slips are attached to the newsletter, or you may collect a hard copy from the office. Details are as follows:
Training will occur three days a week from 20/2/22 (week 5) until 10/3/22 (week 7) unless it is raining.
Monday afternoon 3.15-3.45 with Mrs Marks
Wednesday morning 8:00 - 8:30am with Mr Horne
Friday morning 8:00-8:30 with Mrs Blair
If your child experiences asthma brought on by strenuous exercise, and you know that they will need preventative medicine before they run, please encourage them to go to the office at break time before their PE lesson to take their medication. If your child may require asthma medication during out of hours training they may need to bring it with them. There will be an inhaler in the first aid kit at all PE lessons and Cross Country Training Sessions.
INJURIES
Funnily enough, as if my words in the last newsletter was a prediction, I’ve already had students try to remove bandages or slings to participate in PE and others use a bandaid or sore tooth as a reason not to participate. If your child has an injury that does limit their participation PLEASE email me or send a note to school with the recommended level of participation. It makes my job so much easier. Thankyou.

Dayboro State School (Mon-Tues)
Hi everyone,
I hope you’ve had a great fortnight! Well as you probably know, today we had pancake day. Thanks to everyone who helped us mix the batter, cook and serve them up! I appreciate you (and I’m sure the kids do too!).
I’ve been thinking about what “gem” I could write about in my article this week, and then it occurred to me – diamonds (pun intended!). You probably know, diamonds are the hardest natural substance known to man. In order for one to form, extreme pressures and incredibly hot temperatures are needed over a long period of time, usually very deep within the earth’s surface. Isn’t it remarkable that in a very dark place, under a lot of pressure, stress and heat, something so beautiful and unbreakable forms?
I know whenever I’ve gone through really difficult things in my life, it feels like nothing good could possibly come from those situations. Usually the last thing I wanted to hear is that I was “growing through” what I was going through! I can now, though, see how certain pressures helped build “gems” of resilience and inner strength in my life (though I am the first to admit that I still have so much to learn). So if things are tough for you right now, I hope that you can hold on to that hope.
Upcoming Chappy Events:
Rock and Water – This week our 5M group is starting Rock and Water – please make sure your child has returned their permission slip so they can participate.
Lunch Clubs – keep an eye out for my whiteboard on your way into the CSA for all activities happening at play time.
SUPA Club – See flyer below
Moreton Bay Sports Camp – This year I am a director on a Scripture Union holiday day camp. It is happening on 3– 5 April in North Lakes. If you have a child who interested in sport this will be the camp for them. More information to come.
Finally, I am here to support students, staff and parents in the Dayboro State School community. If you have a need, are going through something difficult or simply need someone to talk to, my door is always open. I have lots of resources and support I can offer. If this would be beneficial for you or if you know of a family it could help, please send me an email. Have a great fortnight!
