In my report to the P&C last night, I acknowledged the previous executive and offered my thanks for the wonderful contributions made to our school. I would also like to extend my thanks to the new members who have joined the P&C this year and to the parents who have elected to take leadership roles in the P&C sub-committees. I look forward to continuing the great work of our P&C with the new team throughout 2019.
All parents are invited to P&C Meetings which are generally held on the second Monday of each month. The next meeting is NEXT Monday 18 March at 6.30pm in the school staffroom.

Dayboro Community Fun Day – this Sunday!
The Sunday Fun Day is coming up fast ! The school has joined with Cr Darren Grimwade and Belgravia Leisure to host a day of fun and activities this Sunday 17 March at the Dayboro Pool. The cost of entry is a gold coin donation with all proceeds from the day going towards supporting our 2019/20 swimming program.
The day commences at 10.00am and will feature sideshows and amusements. This is a community activity and everyone in the Dayboro community is welcome to attend.
Absentee Data Correction
In last week’s newsletter, Year 4B’s attendance rate was incorrectly listed as 92.72%. The correct rate of attendance for the first five weeks is actually 95.73%.
Everyday Counts at Dayboro – Arriving on Time
The last couple of weeks have seen a spike in the number of students arriving late for school. This is becoming a larger concern with some students missing important literacy time in the first part of the school day. Ultimately, continued lateness will impact upon academic performance at school.
Could I please encourage our families to focus upon their children arriving at school on time (before the 8.50am bell) so that the learning day is maximised. Given that Dayboro is geographically isolated from many medical and other appointments, it is understood that sometimes picking up students from school early is necessary and unavoidable. However, minimalizing this to ensure a full day of learning is strongly encouraged, whenever possible.
ANZAC Day
Our first assembly in Term 2 on Wednesday 24 April is our ANZAC Day ceremony. Parents and community members are most welcome to join us for this service. The choir and school band will perform at this ceremony.
Our School Captains, the School Band and School Choir will also participate in the community ANZAC Day service on Thursday 25 April at the Dayboro Showgrounds. More details about our ANZAC Day commemorations will be provided in the coming weeks.
NAPLAN Dates Reminder
The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be held from Tuesday 14- Thursday 16 May. NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. Friday 17 May is set aside as a ‘catch up’ day for students that may have been absent for all or part of the testing program. A full timetable will be published early next term.
Free Dress Day – Thank you

Principal
Dear Families and Friends
National Day Of Action Against Bullying Friday 15th March- Wear Orange!
Our school says 'Bullying. No Way!' on the National Day of Action
THIS Friday 15 March, our school will be taking a stand together on the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.
The National Day is an annual event for Australian schools where school communities across the nation stand as one against bullying and violence.
Dayboro State School is dedicated to creating safe and supportive school environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence.
Together, we can send clear messages to young people that bullying and violence, in or outside the classroom, are not okay at any time.
As Parents and Educators, it is very important we speak to our children around issues with Bullying and Cyber Bullying. Below is a child friendly way of speaking with your child about this sensitive topic. As a school we are raising awareness of this serious issue in a variety of ways. We teach Cyber Safety and Social Skills as part of our curriculum. We encourage students to participate in the National Day of Action Against Bullying when we wear Orange in support of this day. We raise awareness of how to tackle bullying on Assemblies and in class. Classes create pledges where they acknowledge that our school is a “No Bullying “ School and discuss what this means and all staff support children to deal with problems they may face in this area. But parents can help as well by discussing the key points below.
What is bullying?
Bullying is when someone:
- keeps picking on you again and again and tries to make you feel bad
- says or does lots of mean things that upset you
- makes fun of you a lot
- tries to stop you from joining in or make others not like you
- keeps hurting you such as hitting or punching you.
Bullying feels awful. You feel like you can't stop it.
Bullying can happen in person or online (sometimes called cyberbullying). It might be something other people can see or it might be hidden.
Sometimes you might have a fight or argument with someone. If it happens once, it is not bullying even though it can be upsetting. It is also not bullying if you sometimes fight with a friend and you can sort it out.
Bullying is not okay. You have the right to feel safe.
If you don't feel safe, get help right now from your mum, dad, teacher, or another adult who will listen to you!
Why does bullying happen?
It's never okay to be mean. It's never okay to hurt others.
When people bully, it might be because:
- they think it's cool
- they get angry about something and then they take it out on someone else
- they are uncomfortable with people who are different from them
- they don't know how to get along with others
- they think it's funny to hurt people
- they are copying other people
- they think other people will laugh too.
Whatever the reason, there's no excuse for bullying.
Where can bullying happen?
Bullying can happen almost anywhere including:
- at school
- on the way to school
- in the playground
- on trips or camps
- on the phone or the internet
- at the shops.
Thank you from Mrs Ryan
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”

Headlice!
What a nuisance these little insects are. Unfortunately they are a part of life at schools but we can help limit the spread and size of infestations by following some simple guidlines. Below is some information that may be of interest to you. Keeping on top of them is our best defence.

It was very pleasing to see so many people attend Monday night’s P&C AGM (11 March), and especially the new faces from among our 2019 Prep parents. Thank you all for coming along and for joining our P&C. We look forward to a great year supporting our school and its students.
At our AGM we announced a new structure for the make up of P&C, and apart from the usual Executive comprising President, Vice President, Secretary (& Facebook), and Treasurer, our P&C roles include Uniform Shop Co-Ordinator, Tuckshop Co-Ordinator, School Banking Co-Ordinator, a Projects and Activities Team (ideally at least 4x members of P&C), and Technology/Systems. We had no nominations for the roles of President and Vice President, and as a result, both Nathan Oldfield (our 2018 Vice President) has kindly accepted to carry out this role, and I myself will continue as President, though it must be stressed, my continuing as President is only most likely a temporary arrangement, as new employment will most likely see me relocate interstate so I would need to resign and P&C would then seek someone else who would consider becoming President.
Our 2018 Secretary Mia Gillies also kindly nominated to continue on in this role, and our 2018 Treasurer Amanda King has similarly accepted to continue in this role for this year, and it was also great to have another P&C member offer to intern for the Treasurer’s role to carry on Amanda’s great work in 2020. Karen Hocking will be continuing as our Uniform Shop Co-Ordinator, and we want to also sincerely thank Lyndall Little for an extraordinary effort of twelve years in this role for P&C – super effort, well done, and many many thanks!
One new role is still vacant, that being Tuckshop Co-Ordinator, which is a revisioning of the former Tuckshop Treasurer position. We would very much like to hear from anyone who is interested to help fill this role. Our School Banking team is all ready to go – thanks all involved! And our new Projects and Activities Team has a number of people who attended our AGM put their hands up to get started in, but if anyone else is interested, please come along to our first meeting next week, and we can fill you in as to what’s involved, and we will go from there. Lastly, another new position created this year, Technology/Systems, is being filled by our Vice President Nathan.
Please note that to join P&C you must apply for membership and submit an application form (and an apology for the AGM is not sufficient under the Constitution to do so). New or renewed membership of P&C can be organised at any of our regular general meetings through the year, so please consider coming along and joining our P&C. You must be present at a general meeting to apply for membership, although applications can be accepted where an applicant can demonstrate exceptional circumstances in writing as to why they cannot be present.
Our first general meeting for the new 2019 P&C is this coming Monday 18 March at 6.30pm at the School Staff Room. We look forward to seeing you there.
Jeff Hopkins-Weise (P&C President)
What’s happening in Prep?
Road Safety Awareness
The Preps had a visit from our crossing supervisor to reinforce road safety awareness. We practised how to cross the road with the lollypop person. We made a pretend crossing in our driveway, and the children learned the correct procedure to follow. Thank you to everyone involved for making this a great learning experience for our Preps.
Pine Rivers District Trials
If your child is selected to attend a district trial s/he will bring home some paperwork. The front cover is for you to keep and has details about the trials, including how to pay for the trials online. Payment must be completed before attending the trials. The remaining paperwork will need to be filled in and then brought to the school office for Mr Drummond to sign off. Mr Drummond will then return the paperwork to your child who needs to take it with them to the trials. The coach and/or manager at the trials will collect the paperwork before your child participates in any activity. If your child is selected to go to more than one trial, these forms will need to be completed each time. Please see below for a full list of district trials happening for the remainder of the term.
Week 7
- Monday 11th March 2019: 12 YRS Girls Netball
- Tuesday 12th March 2019: 10-12 YRS Boys Rugby League
- Wednesday 13th March 2019: 10-12 YRS Boys & Girls Soccer
- Thursday 14th March 2019: 10-12 YRS Boys & Girls Touch Football
Week 10
- Friday 5th April 2019: 10-12 YRS Cross Country
Students who are interested in going to districts for Cross Country should be coming to the weekly training sessions at 11am on the school oval. On Monday 18th March during the normal training time, students will be timed running their age group course at school. This time trial will then determine who is selected for the district trials. Any students that are absent or cannot come to this timed training session, will have the opportunity to still be timed during one of the other training sessions with Mrs Summers on Wednesday or Mr Horne on Friday. If there are any questions regarding these timed trials, please see Mrs Braun.
Sport Carnivals
A reminder to mark down in your calendars, that the Senior Athletics Carnival (for grades 3-6) will be held on Tuesday 26th March, which is just over two weeks away. As always, families are welcome to come along and show their support to their child/ren. On the day, students will need to wear their sports uniform, including their house shirt, and bring their school hat, sunscreen, suitable running shows, a nutritious lunch and plenty of water.
High Jump Trials
To ensure the carnival runs smoothly on the day, and every event finishes on time, High Jump will be done before to the carnival, at a break time. Students wanting to have a go at High Jump for house points or to make it to districts (10-12 year olds only), High Jump will be starting this week. For students aged 11 and 12 this will be on Tuesday 12th March at 1st break up on the oval and for those aged 8, 9 and 10 will be the following week on Tuesday 19th March also at first break on the oval. As soon as students are dismissed by their teacher for morning tea, they are to meet Mrs Braun and Chappy Cam up on the oval with their hat, drink bottle and food. If for some reason your child/ren cannot attend these trials but still wishes to do High Jump, please contact Mrs Braun to arrange an alternative day.
1500m and 800m Trials
Due to time and limited space on the oval, both the 1500m and 800m for this year’s Senior Athletics Carnival will take place prior to the day of the Senior Athletics Carnival.
Students aged 10-12 years old this year, who are wishing to go to the District Athletics Carnival for 1500m will need to come to the weekly Cross Country training session, to be timed running a 1500m course. Although it is encouraged, students do not need to be attending every Cross Country training session to be nominated for the 1500m event. If selected, students will then compete at the District Athletics Carnival on the 7th and/or 8th May next term.
All points collected from both 800m and 1500m are put towards Championship trophies and individual Age Champion medallions.
SENIOR TRACK AND FIELD CARNIVAL – COMING SOON!
The Senior Track and Field carnival will be held in exactly two weeks on Tuesday 26th March (week 9). The children have been busily training for track and field events, and our committee is in the process of organising the sprints divisions for the big day. The high jump event is being held over the next two weeks, and the results of this event will be announced on carnival day.
The children will rotate through five stations in their age groups – 100m sprints, long jump, discus, shot put and a new novelty event “Tug of War”. The finale on the day will be the 200m sprints. At each of the field events, some parent help will be required with measuring – it would be wonderful if we could all work together to assist the teachers on each station!
Thank you very much for your support!
DSS Sports Committee
Also..... on Tuesday 26th March for our Track and Field Carnival there will be Coffee.... Thanks Chappy Cam!
The Bridge Builders
We had an excellent day at Pine Rivers SHS on the 6th of March learning about the role of Civil Engineers and how bridges are designed.
We learned about the importance of geometric shapes, particularly triangles, in bridge designs. After completing tower and bridge construction challenges using paper, we were able to work with our group to design and build our own bridge using paddle pop sticks.
When we were building our bridges we needed to try and include some strong shapes, especially triangles, to give our designs extra strength. We also needed to think about offsetting the layers of our paddle pop sticks so that the bridges didn’t end up with any weak points. The bridges needed to be at least 30cm long, and we could use a maximum of 250 paddle pop sticks per group.

At the end of the day when our bridges were tested, 2 groups had bridges that were able to support 4kg of weight without breaking. We were amazed that our paddle pop bridges were so strong! We did notice that the bridges that were able to hold this amount of weight all made use of cross bracing and offsetting construction techniques, and there were strong triangles in the designs.

We all had a great day and learned a lot about building strong bridges.
Thank you Pine Rivers SHS.
CHAPPY CHATZ – BULLYING
Bullying has become one of the hot topics in the last couple of years with deaths of young people accredited to being bullied. How as a parent do you work this out in your family? Here are somethings that can help you as a parents or carers in preventing and responding to bullying.
You can:
- Learn what bullying is and what it is not. This is the first step in talking about how to prevent or respond to bullying with your child. 'Bullying' is a word that is used for lots of things that are not actually bullying. These other behaviours may be just as serious, but may require different responses.
- Talk about the value of diversitywith the community and understanding that each individual is unique and brings with them individual differences that should be values and respected.
- Talk about bullying with your child at home to make it easier for them to tell you if something happens. Make sure they know what bullying is and how they can respond. Help prepare your children to prevent online bullying and to know what to do if it happens.
- Start when your child is young to guide them to develop the social and emotional skills they will need to build positive relationships throughout their lives, including problem-solving skills.
- Recognise the warning signs of bullying. Although there may not be an issue, you should talk to your child if you have any concerns. Raise the topic generally if you don't want to ask directly. Be aware that many times children and young people won't ask for help, so it is important to know what to look for.
- Learn about how to respond appropriately if your child tells you about bullying. You can reassure your child by remaining calm and being supportive.
- Find out as much as you can about what has happened by talking calmly with your child. A good understanding about what has happened can also help you in communicating with the school about the situation.
- Read about strategies that can help. Practising strategies at home with your child is a good way to prepare them to use them at school.
- Contact the school if bullying has occurred and the school needs to be involved. Read about how you and the school can work together to support your child, whether your child was bullied, bullied others, or witnessed bullying.
- Get involved in what your school is doing to prevent bullying.
- Learn about relevant state or national laws about bullying.
- Find resources for parents on online safetyon the Student Wellbeing Hub about supporting your child to be safe online.
- Find additional assistance if, after working with your child and your school, you need more information or help to address the situation from outside the school.
If you would like to know more, I am happy to chat with you & point you to other resources.
Have a great week!
See you around the school. J

What’s happening at Helping Hands this week?
Ph: 0459 991 697
Email: dayboro@helpinghandsnetwork.com.au
This week has been a big week for outdoor play with games such as four corners, red rover, sandcastle competitions and basketball being played regularly. Children have also been enjoying constructing various things with magnetic tiles and mobilo. These activities were great opportunities for children to unleash their creativity skills at the service. We got some great ideas for next week from our children’s meetings this week, including an interest in learning different languages. A big thankyou to our senior children who have been helping with little jobs around the house, the team really appreciate it!
A reminder that toys should not be brought to the service from home. If they are for show and tell at school, they are to remain in school bags to ensure they are not lost or broken. Children should also be bringing hats and water bottles to each session they attend. The team are more than happy to re-fill drink bottles if needed.
With the return of extra-curricular activities, please note that a permission form needs to be filled out prior to your child/ren leaving the service. These forms are to be updated each term and we are unable to release children to extra-curricular activities without written permission from parents/guardians.
Vacation care bookings are now open. Please see attached the brochure of exciting activities, excursions and incursions we have planned. Copies of the brochure are available at the service or alternatively we can email one through. Children must be enrolled with Helping Hands prior to booking/attending the service. This can be done by going onto helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, clicking register, selecting Dayboro State School and following the prompts.
If your child/ren will be absent for any session, you can mark them absent on the iparent portal by clicking the day, the session/s and clicking the red x on the right. Any issues, please contact the service and we’ll be happy to help. If your circumstances change and you no longer need a certain day/session please let us know so we can offer the place to someone else.
Homework club continues to run from 4:30-5:00pm Monday-Thursday, please let one of the team know if you would like your child included in this.
On behalf of the team, have a great week!!
AGAIN JUST A REMINDER: 'No school banking' on 26th March, due to the senior sports carnival.
Thank you
