P&C AGM – Next Monday 11 March
The P&C Annual General Meeting will be held next Monday at 6.30pm in the school staffroom. This is a wonderful opportunity for our new families to become involved in our great school and be part of the decision making process. All are welcome to attend.
Please note that only the AGM will be held on this evening. The General P&C Meeting for March will be held on Monday March 18 at 6.30pm in the school staffroom.
Our school says 'Bullying. No Way!' on the National Day of Action
On Friday 15 March, our school will be taking a stand together on the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.
The National Day is an annual event for Australian schools where school communities across the nation stand as one against bullying and violence.
Dayboro State School is dedicated to creating safe and supportive school environments, free from bullying, harassment and violence.
Together, we can send clear messages to young people that bullying and violence, in or outside the classroom, are not okay at any time.
Our School is planning an “Orange Day” on Friday 15 March. We are inviting all our students and school community to wear something Orange to signify the importance of this day.
We will keep you informed about our plans and activities to celebrate the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence on Friday 15 March. Please note the date in your diaries.
School Attendance
An attendance target of 96% has been set for schools in the North Coast Education Region. How is our attendance for the first five weeks of the school year? At Dayboro, ‘every day counts’ and regular, on time attendance is strongly encouraged.
To report an absence from school call the absence line on 34256160 and leave a detailed message, including the reason for the absence. Absence notifications can also be forwarded to the school via Q Parents. Unexplained absences from school will result in an SMS being forwarded to advise of the absence and to request a reason for the absence. Cooperation in keeping our students safe by following this process would be very much appreciated.

Dear Families and Friends
Student Leaders - National Young Leader’s Day
Last Friday Ms Foord and I took the Student Leaders from Year 6 to the National Young Leader’s Day at the Convention Centre. I would like to commend our leaders on their exemplary behaviour and the way they represented Dayboro at this event. Thank you also to Ms Foord for organising the day. The guest speakers on the day were from a range of backgrounds and are leaders in Sport (Cate Campbell) , Literature (Matt Cosgrove) and the Community (Tim Diamond - Chairman of Cotton On Foundation) and all had faced varying challenges in their lives. Matt Cosgrove, Author and Illustrator of books such as Epic Fail Tales and Alpacas with Maracas spoke to future leaders from more than 100 schools about the 5 P’s.
- Perception is everything- find the Positive
- Passion- find your passion and practice it!
- People are important – surround yourselves with the right people who inspire and challenge you to do your best.
- Persistence- Never give up.
- The Power of Imagination- “Dare to dream and anything is possible”
I hope all our leaders were inspired and encouraged to lead with passion and persistence!

NOTICE TO BE AWARE
Please be advised that this game is making another appearance on devices that some of our students may have access to. Please be vigilent as to the content your children might have access too and perhaps have a conversation with them regarding online safety and the importance of them telling you if they see something inappropriate.
A serious risk to children has been identified regarding an on line game which is surfacing again. This ‘game’ is called Momo which is a new iteration of the Blue Whale game that was prevalent 2 years ago. This is a game that originated overseas and does not require any special software or downloads outside of a messaging system which makes it far more dangerous.
The person contacts children via social media apps and in this particular iteration via WhatsApp. They are asked to add ‘Momo’ to their friends and engage with this avatar. Once they begin engaging they are asked to complete challenges with the final stage being suicide. In some cases the users private information is hacked and this is used to blackmail and manipulate them even further in to the game.
Please be aware that the name Momo is also that of a character in a children’s show, Avatar: The last Airbender.
Below are two links to sites that will help inform you of the risks. The first is in regards to a nine news story about the initial incidents occurring overseas and how the game is run and the second is in regards to what measures parents can take if a child has engaged and show signs of having been manipulated by Blue Whale or Momo.

Preps have become familiar with routines and have settled in well to their new learning environment. There are a few things you could do as parents to support ongoing well being as young learners.
Naming Belongings
We have noticed many student items are not named. This makes it very difficult for us to ensure they find their way home. Please make sure the following items are clearly labelled:
- Jumpers and Tracksuit Pants
- Bags (names on the inside of bag for safety)
- Spare Clothing
- Containers and Water Bottles
Spare Clothing
Does your child have a set of spare clothes in their bag? The following items can be kept in a plastic bag in their school bag.
- Full uniform or school colour clothes
- Underwear
- Socks
- Jumper for cooler weather
Saying Good-bye
Even the most confident child will sometimes be upset when saying good-bye at school. As distressing as it is for you, keeping it positive helps them to recover and start their day of learning.
Eating Times
We have noticed some beautiful lunches. Healthy food choices such as sandwiches, wraps, cheese, fruit and cut vegetables are easy to eat and sustains their energy throughout the day. Please refrain from giving them too many sweet choices as this can affect behaviour and learning. If your child has tuckshop, please remind them what their main meal is going to be and what they need to eat first. We are happy to put ordered cold and frozen foods in the fridge if they run out of time to eat them.
Curriculum News: Biological Sciences
This term our Prep learners are discovering how scientists observe by using their senses. We are investigating the needs of living things by sorting and determining their characteristics. As part of our learning experiences we are growing grass seeds and observing weekly changes. In the next few weeks we are going to focus on family pets and what they need to survive.

The Library has been a hive of activity over the last few weeks. Students have been using the iPads to read clues to find the location of “Wally”, who is hiding in a few books in the Library. Some students are working really hard to decipher the clues to use as search words in the library catalogue to find the correct book to win a prize.
The MakerSpace is continuing to be a popular choice for students during first break. It is always surprising what inventions and gifts are made using our recycled resources. Our Year 6 STEAM Team volunteers are assisting in the Library again at lunch times, so we now have extra hands to help run coding and robotics activities. The board games are being used by enthusiastic students during the breaks, there are a few games that have quickly become firm favourites.

Students are reminded that they need a Library bag to provide protection to Library books when borrowing. Library bags should be used every time a Library book is being transported to or from school, in last week alone we had 3 damaged novels returned to the Library. It is the responsibility of each student who borrows a Library book to take care of it until it is returned to the Library. Library bags offer some protection for our books.
Thank you
Mrs Wilkinson
Pine Rivers District Trials
Each year the Pine Rivers District run sporting trials to select students for a District Team. The trials are often for 10-12 year olds but some will only be for 11-12 year olds. Competition levels are high, so we recommend that only students who participate in a club at a high level nominate. A maximum of 3 students per school are able to attend. Most of these trials are held in term 1 with a few more in term 2. The information for each trial only comes out a week or so in advance and with me only working 2 days a week, it’s important that you and your child are paying attention to when these trials are on. I have included current district sporting trials and the dates below. I suggest you take note of the trails relevant to your child/ren. This information will be displayed on the whiteboard/corkboard in the CSA and in the newsletter during the fortnight prior to the trial. Occasionally the dates for the trials will change. We will inform you through the newsletter.
Rugby League Trials
Students aged 10-12 years old, who are interested in being selected for the District Rugby League trials this year, will have a school trials this Thursday 7th March at 1st break up on the oval. Students are to meet Mr Horne on the oval once dismissed from their eating area and with a hat, drink bottle and suitable running shoes. Only students with Rugby League experience and who have played for a club outside of school should attend. A modified game of rugby League, with no tackling involved, will be played at school to determine which students are suitable for district trials. Students that are selected for the district trials will then be given forms to be completed by their parents/carer and need to be taken to the trials with them. Good luck!

Cross Country Training: Time Trials
Students who have been coming along are now into their fifth week of training and it has been wonderful to see many students returning, more keen and enthusiastic for some running and fitness. It is still not too late to join in, for any students in grade 3-6 wanting to just improve their running before the School Fun Run which is happening next term on Tuesday 18th June. For those students who are coming to be selected for the Cross Country team, the sessions are starting to get much harder and challenging as the District Cross Country trials gets closer (Friday 5th April). In just 2 weeks, on Monday 18th March during their normal training session time, students will be timed, running their age group course. This is to determine their suitability for district trials and select a Cross Country team. Any students that are absent or cannot come to this timed training session, will have the opportunity to still be timed during one of the other training sessions with Mrs Summers on Wednesday or Mr Horne on Friday. If there are any questions regarding these timed trials, please see Mrs Braun.
High Jump Trials
A reminder to mark down in your calendars, that the Senior Athletics Carnival (for grades 3-6) will be held on Tuesday 26th March, which is only three weeks away. As always, families are welcome to come along and show their support to their child/ren. On the day, students will need to wear their sports uniform, including their house shirt, and bring their school hat, sunscreen, suitable running shows, a nutritious lunch and plenty of water.
To ensure the carnival runs smoothly on the day, and every event finishes on time, High Jump will be done before to the carnival, at a break time. Students wanting to have a go at High Jump for house points or to make it to districts (10-12 year olds only), High Jump will be starting next week. For students in grades 5 and 6 this will be on Tuesday 12th March at 1st break up on the oval and for those in grades 3 and 4, will be the following week on Tuesday 19th March also at first break on the oval. As soon as students are dismissed by their teacher for morning tea, they are to meet Mrs Braun and Chappy Cam up on the oval with their hat, drink bottle and food. If for some reason your child/ren cannot attend these trials but still wishes to do High Jump, please contact Mrs Braun to arrange an alternative day.
1500m and 800m Trials
Due to time and limited space on the oval, both the 1500m and 800m for this year’s Senior Athletics Carnival will take place prior to the day of the Senior Athletics Carnival.
Students aged 10-12 years old this year, who are wishing to go to districts for 1500m are invited to come to Mrs Braun’s weekly Cross Country training session next week, Monday 11th March at first break, to be timed running a 1500m course. Although it is encouraged, students do not need to be attending every Cross Country training session to be nominated for the 1500m event. If selected, students will then compete at the District Athletics Carnival on the 7th and/or 8th May next term.
In week 8, on Wednesday 20th March students in grades 3-6 will be running their 800m event for their School Athletics Carnival. Between 9am and 11am students will be up on the oval with their classroom teacher, completing their 800m run. All students in these grades are encouraged to participate and have a go. Families are also welcome to this short pre-carnival event and cheer on their child/ren.
PE Class of the Week
This week the PE trophy and award goes to 3OH for being enthusiastic and safe in PE. This is very important this term, as we are learning how to correctly through a discus and shot put. Keep up the good work and you might be rewarded the trophy again. Congratulations 3OH!

CHAPPY CHATZ – CULTURAL DIVERSITY
Culture is the accepted norms and practices of a particular group of people.
We often see a person’s cultural background through their language and race. We also see it through their art, music, food and style of clothing.
A cultural group can share the same gender, age, spirituality, physical issues or social status, among other things.
How can cultural discrimination harm young people?
Cultural discrimination is when a person is treated less favourably because of their culture. Australia provides laws to protect its citizens but despite this, some young people are insulted, humiliated or threatened because of their culture. It can lead to:
- Feelings of sadness and lack of trust in other people
- Isolation and exclusion
- Depression and feeling suicidal
- Anxiety and fear of being attacked verbally or physically
- Inability to concentrate on study or work
- Post-traumatic stress and flashbacks
- Managing urges to retaliate and consequences of doing so
- Feelings of anger and frustration
“Standing for cultural acceptance and standing by your child against discrimination makes the world a safer place for them”.
What can I do to encourage cultural acceptance?
As a parent, you can provide support to your child if they have been discriminated against. You can also encourage cultural acceptance through your own actions.
- Raise your child with pride in their own cultural identity.
- If your child is hurt by discrimination, remind them of their strengths.
- Avoid reacting in anger or retaliating in front of your child.
- Encourage them to be assertive where safe to do so.
- Expose your child to multicultural experiences and diverse friendships.
- Talk with them about stereotypes and actively challenge these.
- Reassure your child that they're not alone.
- Tell them discrimination is not ok.
- Talk positively about other cultures.
If you would like to know more, I am happy to chat with you & point you to other resources
Have a great week!
See you around the school.
