Dear Parents and Caregivers
It has certainly been a busy couple of weeks to start Term 3. Students were provided with a treat with a visit by Dr Cameron Stelzer who delighted students with his engaging activities. I am sure everyone enjoyed his focus on effective writing which complemented wonderfully our school focus for this year. Cameron is the author of the Scallywags and Pie Rat series of books.
Last Friday we celebrated our annual French Day. It was a real spectacle with the many French themed characters interacting across our school. Our students need to be congratulated for the effort which many took to complement the theme of the day. Well done to Mrs Taylor in the tuckshop for the excellent menu organised especially for the day. The day seems to be getting bigger and bigger each year. Log into our school Facebook page for photos of our school events.
Our COVID-SAFE Plan
Thankyou to our school community for working with us to ensure that we are compliant to COVID-19 restrictions and Queensland Health requirements. I would like to remind everyone of our protocols to ensure that we remain safe in our school.
Entry to our School :- Our school remains a controlled environment for Term 3. There is no general access to classrooms or the school grounds. The office, however, is open via a side window for payments and other enquiries. Please do not enter our school if there are symptoms of cold and flu present.
Meetings and Interviews with Teachers :- Our first preference for communication with teachers is via email or telephone. Teachers can hold face-to-face interviews at their discretion and invitation. Please note that anyone attending a classroom is required to attend the office in the first instance to complete the COVID-SAFE contact register.
Future School Events:- We are making plans for ensuring that planned events such as our Prep Information Session, Fathers’ Day Stall, and Year 6 Graduation can go ahead following the COVID-SAFE guidelines. There will be changes to the way these will run this year, details of which will be communicated closer to the time.
Keeping students at home if not well :- Our school community does this well. With some current concerns around vomiting and diarrhoea this becomes so much more important.
Our focus is on keeping our school community safe and well. Thank you to everyone for your cooperation.
Prep Enrolments -2021
We are already receiving enquiries about our Prep program for 2021. We are pleased to provide information and enrolment information anytime at our school office. However, I am able to advise that our Prep Information and Enrolment Morning will be held on Wednesday 19 August at 9.30am in our School Hall. This will be followed up with Prep interviews for all newly enrolled students from 19-23 October and a Prep Orientation Day on Tuesday 10 November.
If you have a child born between 1 July 2015 – 30 June 2016, he/she is eligible for Prep enrolment at Dayboro State School in 2021. Please note that Dayboro State School has an Enrolment Management Plan in place – please check at http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/catchment/ for further information.
We have had several enquiries regarding enrolling at Dayboro Prep from outside the catchment area. Families who view Dayboro as their school of choice are very welcome to submit an enrolment application, however the outcome of the application will not be advised until late October when available places are allocated in the order of receipt.
I would be pleased if this information could be circulated to people who are known to you and are wishing to enrol in our Prep program in 2021.

FRENCH DAY
Learning another language is such an important skill and certainly one that our high schools encourage and promote for our students to pursue in Yrs 7 and 8. While it may not be French on offer, the learning of a Language Other than English can assist children to enrich their learning in many other ways.
The Australian Curriculum describes the Learning of another language as
“Learning a new language does not require forsaking the first language. It is an enriching and cumulative process, which broadens the learners’ communicative repertoire, providing additional resources for interpreting and making meaning. Learners come to realise that interactions between different people through the use of different languages also involves interactions between the different kinds of knowledge, understanding and values that are articulated through language(s) and culture(s). They realise that successful intercultural communication is not only determined by what they do or say, but also by what members of the other language and culture understand from what they say or do.”
As part of this cultural celebration the whole school dressed up in different French outfits and we even had a Special Tuckshop Day consisting of croissants, baguettes, French Cheesecakes and other French Epicurean delights. Madame Shaw also had some special activities planned for Yrs 5 and 6 students.

IMPORTANT PBL NEWS!
Our Awards are: Be Kind, Be positive, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Proud and Be Tolerant.
We are also looking at resuming the Principal’s Awards next week.
This week’s Assembly award winners are as below:
Every week we also have 4 students who receive GOTCHA awards. These students are spotted by other teachers in the playgrounds and classrooms and rewarded for doing the right thing with a GOTCHA award. They then go into the draw box where very week 4 students names are pulled out of the box. The winners receive a prize from the Prize Box and an iceblock voucher.
Congratulations to this week’s GOTCHA award winners.
Author Visit – Dr Cameron Stelzer, The Story Doctor
A big thank you to Dr Stelzer for his inspiring visit last Wednesday. The children were raving about his books and characters and a spark was certainly ignited! To follow this success, look out for details about a Writing Competition we are holding at school to find Creative Writers in the Junior School and the Middle/ Upper School. We even have a donation from The Moreton Bay Shire Council to supply some prizes for the most creative and innovative Picture Books and Quest novels produced. More info. to come.
Thank you to Mrs Taylor and her wonderful helpers for the food at French Day. It was norriture delicieuse! (Very delicious)
NCCD
Please be aware that the NCCD census date is August 7th (The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability).
The NCCD collects data from our school about students with disability who are receiving adjustments across Australia in a consistent, reliable and systematic way. It enables schools, education authorities and governments to better understand the needs of students with disability and how they can be best supported at school.
For your information the website link is below:
Thank you from Mrs Ryan
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”

As the Year 5 Camp is more expensive than previous years (due to the smaller cohort), we are more than happy to provide a payment plan. Payments must be made regularly, and must be completed by the 27th November 2020.
Payment Methods & How to Pay
Dayboro State School accepts and encourages the below payment methods:
-
Qkr! by Masterpass.
This is a new payment option to our school, and we have been very excited to introduce to our parents! It is very simple and easy to use, just follow the steps of the below image.
Qkr! is used by many high schools, including our feeder high schools, so it is a great opportunity to begin using it.
-
BPOINT
You can use BPOINT in two different ways:
- Clicking on the link on the invoice, which will take you directly to the BPOINT page.
- Payment by phone using credit/debit card via BPOINT: 1300 631 073
-
In Person
You can still opt to pay in person. Please note, we encourage using EFTPOS over the use of Cash, particularly in this current climate. If you are choosing to use cash, please ensure it is the correct amount as our office does not hold cash on site for change.
If students are paying by cash, they are to bring it directly to the office and wait for a receipt – we no longer have the option for students to leave money in an envelope. At no time should a student give any money to classroom teachers for excursions, teachers will redirect them to the office to pay.

What a fantastique day!! So many great outfits, with lots of red, blue and white! And so many serves of cheesecake! Another tremendous effort by Mrs Taylor and her team of volunteers. Operations Update
Returning to all grade ordering from Wednesday 5th August! This means full menu and all grades on both days! Yay!
Thanks for your understanding and fingers crossed we can stay as business as usual ongoing.
Ordering Deadlines:
- Flexischools: 1am the day of service
- Brownbags: First bell the day of service
Tuckshop Coordinator
Our volunteer Tuckshop Coordinator, Laura McIntosh, has recently resigned from the position to focus on family. Thank you, Laura, for your contribution to both the Tuckshop but also the P&C overall. We appreciate your offer of continued support.

At this stage, we will be continuing to operate the Uniform Shop online, with orders emailed or dropped to the school office.
Thanks

Swooping birds
Some native birds, including magpies, plovers, butcherbirds and crows, swoop as a defensive behaviour to protect their young. Swooping is most common during the spring breeding season, but if weather conditions are favourable some species may start breeding from late winter and continue into summer.
Students may encounter swooping birds on their way to and from school, or while inside school grounds. While being swooped on can be unpleasant, there are simple steps that can be taken to reduce safety risks to individuals and the community. Please find enclosed a fact sheet for distribution to students, staff and parents at your discretion.
Head of Department (Curriculum) Update
Reading in our modern world is more important than ever. When your kids see you reading and writing in everyday life – reading for pleasure, sharing a story with them, using a recipe, making a shopping list, writing a birthday card, reading street signs, or reading and writing emails – it teaches them that reading and writing are useful skills.
Reading with your child at home will help them in all learning areas at school. Often teachers will ask you to listen to your child read at home. This is a good way to support your child's reading. You can borrow books from your school library or your local library.
What parents can do at home to help their kids with reading PART A
- Be confident that your child will learn to read. Give positive messages and involve them in everyday conversations and opportunities to read.
- Read aloud to your child. It helps them to learn about the language of books and will encourage them to enjoy books and reading.
- Read to your child in your home language if your first language is not English.
- Make reading enjoyable and talk about books, magazines and computer stories that you have read together.
- Try not to let television or the computer intrude on reading time. Make a special time for reading with your child, away from interruptions.
- Listen to your child read as often as you can, every day if possible, even if only for a short time.
- Give books in print or electronic form as treats and presents.
Hints for listening to your child read
- When reading together at home try to make the time relaxed, enjoyable and positive. Vary it. Read together, read to your child and take turns or have them read to you.
- Before reading, talk about the cover, the title and the pictures, and discuss what the book may be about.
- During reading, discuss what has been read up to that point and predict what might happen next.
- After you've finished reading with your child, talk and ask questions about the story and the pictures.
Please watch out for PART B in the next newsletter.
Regards, Linda Smith
Maker Space
To help everyone get into the pirating spirit ready for the Dr Cameron Stelzer author visit, the maker space had pirate themed challenges available for students to participate in for the first two weeks of the term. We were very impressed with some of the creativity of the students who designed and made pirate accessories. We were also surprised to see which Lego pirate boats floated (and which ones capsized!) once they were placed into a tub of water.
We managed to complete the dinosaur jigsaw (great team effort, everyone!) and we are in the process of setting up a special place in the Library for the Osmo sets which are always a popular choice with our students during breaks. Keep an eye out for Mo.

Where’s Spot?
Once you have given an answer for all ten locations hand your competition form in at the Library for your chance to win a prize.
Entries will close on 21st August, 2020.
2020 Premier’s Reading Challenge Reminder
Only 5 weeks to go!
Reading recording sheets are available on the Premier’s Reading Challenge website in the Downloads and Forms section. Recording sheets can be collected from the school Library or your classroom teacher. When you have completed your reading challenge record sheet remember to hand your sheet to your teacher so that they can update the database with your progress.
Keep on reading everyone!
Thank you for you continued support,
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
2020 Pine Rivers District Trials
School Sport is back up and running, for some sports. I have attached a list below of which sports are still going ahead with their trials. Unfortunately our district and the Met North region have had to make the decision to cancel their Athletics Trials which means there won’t be a School Athletics Carnival for Dayboro SS this year. Most other sports, that were meant to have their trials earlier this year, have also been cancelled. If you have any further questions about School Sport, please don’t hesitate to call me at school or send me an email at jbrau28@eq.edu.au

Thought of the Week
‘Friends’ - written by Trace Moroney author of “The Things I Love About Friends”.
“Friendship is a sense of connectedness where each person feels the others warmth, kindness, compassion, cooperation, love, understanding, and genuineness. Friendships have a significant impact on our psychological wellbeing and, with positive quality friendships, we live longer, healthier and happier lives!
Peer relationships are important to children’s development, and not only provide a supportive framework in which they can share ideas, interests, and feelings - but through these interactions children learn valuable social skills.
Studies suggest that children who have secure attachments with their parents/caregivers have better quality friendships. As parents/caregivers, we can help our children develop positive peer relationships by fostering: empathy (ability to consider another’s perspective); good verbal/communication skills; impulse control/emotional self-control; kindness (willingness to help others, compromise, share); and... lots of fun, laughter and happiness!”
Over the last fortnight our children creatively created pencil holders, painted owls and created unique pictures with their handprints. These activities prompted positive interactions among children and educators, and children showed commitment to finish these. We also engaged in outdoor games such as handball, red rover, capture the flag and basketball. Our moovosity program, designed to promote physical activity through age appropriate activities saw our children participate in games such as Howzat! And step on it. Howzat utilised accuracy skills to throw the ball at the wickets in a relay format to encourage teamwork. Step on it developed agility skills used in red rover for example by stepping on desginated markers. Children were also excited to engage in an experiment to blow a balloon up without using their mouth. This prompted curiosity, inquiry and hypothesising from the children.
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings. Please also ensure you are able access your iparent portal – this is where you make and amend your bookings and receive notifications, messages and newsletters from us in addition to this fortnightly segment.
Vacancies are available for both morning and afternoon sessions on selected days, and we welcome all children and families to the service. To enrol your child, please visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, selecting Dayboro as your service and following the prompts to access the iParent Portal. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.
