FRENCH DAY

KRyan_French_flag.jpg

The whole school celebrated French Day last Friday.  Here at Dayboro we are fortunate to have a highly experienced LOTE teacher in Madame Shaw who teaches French to our Yr. 5 and 6 students.

Learning another language is such an important skill and certainly one that our high schools encourage and promote for our students to pursue in Yrs 7 and 8. While it may not be French on offer, the learning of a Language Other than English can assist children to enrich their learning in many other ways.

The Australian Curriculum describes the Learning of another language as

“Learning a new language does not require forsaking the first language. It is an enriching and cumulative process, which broadens the learners’ communicative repertoire, providing additional resources for interpreting and making meaning. Learners come to realise that interactions between different people through the use of different languages also involves interactions between the different kinds of knowledge, understanding and values that are articulated through language(s) and culture(s). They realise that successful intercultural communication is not only determined by what they do or say, but also by what members of the other language and culture understand from what they say or do.”

As part of this cultural celebration the whole school dressed up in different French outfits and we even had a Special Tuckshop Day consisting of croissants, baguettes, French Cheesecakes and other French Epicurean delights. Madame Shaw also had some special activities planned for Yrs 5 and 6 students.

Every week we also have 4 students who receive GOTCHA awards. These students are spotted by other teachers in the playgrounds and classrooms and rewarded for doing the right thing with a GOTCHA award. They then go into the draw box where very week 4 students names are pulled out of the box. The winners receive a prize from the Prize Box and an iceblock voucher.

Congratulations to this week’s GOTCHA award winners.

A big thank you to Dr Stelzer for his inspiring visit last Wednesday. The children were raving about his books and characters and a spark was certainly ignited! To follow this success, look out for details about a Writing Competition we are holding at school to find Creative Writers in the Junior School and the Middle/ Upper School. We even have a donation from The Moreton Bay Shire Council to supply some prizes for the most creative and innovative Picture Books and Quest novels produced. More info. to come.
