Garry Drummond, Principal
Dear Families and Friends
On Monday afternoon, parents, teachers, Mr Drummond and I were treated to an afternoon of musical entertainment at our annual Spring Soiree. It is so wonderful that we can recognise and support so many special interests and talents in all areas at our school, whether it be sporting, academic or musical. Mrs Almond and Mrs Edwards certainly take great pride in nurturing our Choir and Instrumental students and look forward to giving them plenty of opportunities to perform for others. Last term the choir visited our local Conversation Club and performed for them. This term our Instrumental Band performed and competed at The Pine Rivers Show and next term they will also be performing at the Peninsula Music Festival. Of course, this wouldn’t be able to happen without parent support in helping children to practice, driving them to rehearsals (early starts!) and encouraging their children to participate as much as they can. Thank you parents! Thank you to Mrs Almond and Mrs Edwards for a fabulous afternoon!

We have also been celebrating a wide variety of talents, singing, dancing, miming, comedy and gymnastic routines in our annual Dayboro’s Got Talent competition. Chappy Cam has been auditioning students every week and the finals for P-2 students are being held today. They Yr 3-6 finals will be held next week. We will let you know the outcome next week. We really do have lots of talent here at Dayboro!
WRITING AT DAYBORO
At Dayboro we value creative, authentic and engaging writing for a purpose. Our goal for 2019 has been to lift the engagement of our students in writing in all its’ forms and to celebrate successes in writing. Our teachers work hard to embed the teaching of high quality writing practices in their classrooms. Teachers meet regularly to discuss and share writing samples of students and it is pleasing to see our students working so diligently on their writing goals and becoming better writers!
Here are some examples of writing goals from students across our school.
“I am learning to add interesting noun groups to my narrative.”
“I am learning to write more complex and detailed sentences.”
“I am learning how to sequence steps correctly in my procedure/ recipe.”
“I am learning how to create mood in my narrative through effective use of similes and metaphors.”
Ask your child what their Writing goal is!
Thanks to Mrs Mills and the Yr 4 and 5 Teachers and to Bray Park High teachers for organising for our students to attend the Medieval Fayre at Bray Park high today. I’m sure they enjoyed it immensely.
DATE CLAIMER: Thursday 12th September FAMILY DANCE NIGHT 5:30-8:30. See you all there.
Have a great week!
Thank you from Mrs Ryan
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”

Payments must be made regularly, and must be completed by 29th November 2019. This is to ensure all of our excursions are reconciled and meet financial deadlines.
There are several ways to pay for excursions and school activities at Dayboro State School:
- Online payments - BPOINT
By clicking on the BPOINT link on your invoice, it will take you directly to the website to pay.
- Paying by phone.
If you do not wish to process payments online, you are able to pay by phone using a credit/debit card via BPOINT 1300 631 073.
Please quote the CRN and invoice number located at the bottom of the invoice. .
- Paying in person. You can pay in person at the Dayboro State School Administration using EFTPOS, Visa, MasterCard or cash.
Paying with Cash
Whilst we are progressing towards becoming a cashless school, we are also phasing out the use of payment envelopes. In Term 4, families who are paying cash for invoices will be issued a receipt at the same time of payment. This means, that we will no longer be utilising the ‘Permissions and Payments Box’ in the front office.
If students are taking the money to school, they will be required to come to the office before school or at lunch times for payments. Ideally, students making payments should be paid to the office before school, between 8am and 8:40am.
Facilities Hire
As Dayboro State School has a strong association with the local community, we allow community groups to hire certain areas of the school. Our facilities such as the Hall, Under Covered Area (CSA), Oval and Tennis Court are available to hire at a set cost.
All Facilities Hire arrangements need to be discussed with the Business Manager and are approved by the Principal. All fees go directly into the school, whether that be maintaining our grounds and facilities, or providing additional resources for our students.
For more information on our Facilities Hire, please contact the school office.
Voluntary Contributions
It’s not too late to donate to the Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme! The below details outline the cost involved, as well as a link to pay online. Payments can be made directly to the school also via Cash or EFTPOS.
The costs involved in the Voluntary Financial Contributions are:
- $50 per student; or
- $100 per family of two or more enrolled students.
The Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme is approved by the P&C each year, and is aligned to the Department of Education policy requirements. Walkathon
Pizza Parties for Class Winners took place on Friday 6 September – The two Walkathon pizza parties, one for 5H (the best dressed class winner), and 1D and 1L (the joint class winners who raised the most money), took place last Friday. These parties were quite the mammoth effort in the end, with P&C feeding some 75 students plus their respective teaching staff all told. Overall these parties were a major success and many very happy, well fed and smiling students were seen at the end of each party. Many thanks again to classes 5H, 1D and 1L and their Teachers for their success and contributions to this year’s Walkathon fundraising event for our School!
P&C would like to again sincerely thank Brian at our local Johnny’s Pizza Place for not only opening very early to cater for our huge pizza orders on the day, but also for personally delivering to the School Hall at the start of each party last Friday. Many thanks Johnny’s Pizza Place!!!
Family Dance Night is on Thursday 12 September
There are two sessions for this school dance event, the first is 5.30-6.30pm for Prep through to Year 2, then the second session is 7.00-8.30pm for Years 3 through to 6. Pre-ordered meals are via flexischools or paper orders returned to the Office with cash. All pre-ordered meal orders are due in by end of Tuesday 10 September. Also note that there will be drinks (water and poppers) available for purchase on the night but no additional food. Complementary tea and coffee will also be available on the night.
School Swimming Program
One of the many ways in which your School’s P&C supports our School and its Students is by financially assisting with the costs of the swimming program throughout the year. P&C last week contributed a further $1000.00 towards this program which our Students will benefit from during Term 4.
Booklists for 2020
The P&C Executive and School Senior Staff will be meeting later this week to finalise a supplier for our School’s booklists need for next year. Stay tuned for more news on the outcome of this decision soon.

2020 Pine Rivers District Trials
The Pine Rivers District have already released a DRAFT copy of their 2020 trials calendar. These trials are for students aged 10-12 years old next year. If your child/children are interested in representing Dayboro in any of the below trials, they MUST know the rules and have exceptional experience in the sport, for instance, have played at club level or somewhere other than just at school. Exemplary behaviour at school is also a prerequisite. At the start of term 1, 2020 students will be given an opportunity to express their interest by writing their name down on the sports notices board. This does not guarantee that they will be chosen for their nominated sport, but will be up for consideration and approached by me, closer to the date of the trials. Most sports do limit the number of students that each school can send to each trials (normally only 4 students), so if there is a large number of students interested in a sport, such as Soccer, Netball and Rugby League, a lunch time trial will occur at school. Results from the big three carnivals (Cross Country, Athletics & Swimming) that we have at school, will be used to determine who represents our school in these three sports. If you have any further questions about the selection process or below trials, please contact me via the school office.

PE Class of the Week
This week the PE trophy and award went to 6C for playing a game of Tchoukball cooperatively with one another. They played fairly and safely so everyone could enjoy the game and get involved. This can be hard for a class to do sometimes when some play club sport and focus on the points and rules, while others are just trying to have a go and work on their throwing and catching skills. Well done 6C, and I hope this continues.
Mrs Julie Braun
Physical Education Teacher (Monday & Tuesday)
Reminder: Senior Choir are Singing on Assembly Monday 16 September
Meet Mrs Almond at 8.40 in the Hall

Thank you for your ongoing support of Dayboro’s Arts program

French Food Review
Bon Appétit! A few weeks ago year 6 students got to follow recipes in French and create their own food with simple ingredients. Mr Drummond and Mrs Ryan came over to try our food. 6F and 6C were assessed on how well they could read and understand French instructions and make the food. It was delicious. We made special savouries with le pain (bread), le concombre (cucumber), les olives (olives),le fromage (cheese) and le menthe (mint leaf). My personal favourite was Canapé de Concombre (le pain, le fromage et le concombre). Have a look at our photos.6F students

French Day
This year’s French Day will be held on the last day of Term 3, Friday, September 20.
All students are encouraged to come to school dressed in French theme. This could be something iconically, or stereotypically French. Examples include dressing as a ballerina, a French soccer player, a chef, a baker, a model, an artist, a food item, the President of France or a mime artist. The list is endless. Or they may come in the French colours, dark blue, white and red. If they don't dress in theme they wear their uniform. This is not a free dress day. There is no cost. I am encouraging students to be creative, and discouraging them from spending money on their costumes.
There will also be a colouring competition for all year levels. Entry is free. Completed entries must be returned to class teachers by Wednesday, September 18. There will be prizes for the best entries.
I am looking forward to seeing a spectacle of French culture again this year.
Madame Shaw, French Teacher
A Big Thank You from Prep J
It is always wonderful to have parents and grandparents share their knowledge and skills with our young learners. In Prep J, we were fortunate enough to have Harrison Bowden’s grandfather, Dennis Bowden, make us a challenging puzzle based on our sight words. Students worked in groups over a few weeks to meet the challenge of this amazing handmade puzzle and with the help of different support staff, they were able to finally get it finished. Prep J learners showed enthusiasm and determination when working through some very tricky parts of the puzzle. Chappy Cam did a great job getting them over the finish line. Well done Prep J! Thank you so much Mr Bowden and your puzzle will begin to make its way to 4S so Harrison’s big brother Chyrstian Bowden can accept the challenge of this awesome puzzle.

Recycling at Dayboro State School
During 2019 Dayboro State School, with the help of our ’Waste Warriors’ student team, has been revamping our school Recycling Program, with the aim of reducing the amount of material that goes to landfill (dumps) each year.
Every room in the school, including classrooms, the tuckshop, the office, the school hall and OSHC, now has paired ‘Waste’ and ‘Recycling’ bins. Our ‘Waste Warriors’ Team is educating all students from Prep to Year 6 to be careful to put their rubbish in the correct bins.
How can you recycle at home?
The easiest place to start good recycling habits is at home by using separate bins for your recyclables and general waste.
Using your recycle wheelie bin is a great way to recycle household waste products.
Items usually allowed in them include:
- most paper and cardboards
- some plastic items—not plastic bags, see if your local supermarket has a collection point for plastic bags
- most metal items (e.g. food tins and aluminium cans)
- glass bottles and jars.
Recycling tips
- Take lids off plastic bottles and glass items.
- Place items loose in the bin, not in plastic bags.
- Rinse containers.
- Make sure aerosol cans are empty.
- Check the recycling symbols on items to ensure they are recyclable.
- Include only household items (e.g. from the kitchen, bathroom and laundry).
Working together we can all take responsibility towards reducing our carbon footprint and more sustainable living.
Regards, SEMP Committee and Waste Warriors Team
