Dear Parents and Caregivers
Thank you to the school community for the support of our recent Walkathon. To date over $4600 has been collected from the event, which is a great result for our hard working P&C and ultimately, our students. On assembly yesterday the results and the recipients of the various prizes were announced and awarded. A full list of the prize recipients is in the P&C section of this newsletter. On behalf of the school, I would like to thank Mr Peter Dutton MP for the kind donation of the major bike prize and our local Dayboro IGA for the donation of $500 towards our fundraising efforts and also for the supply of the ice blocks for our students.
School Opinion Survey- Closes this Friday
Thank you to everyone who has taken the opportunity to provide feedback for our school by completing the School Opinion Survey. There is still time to complete this important survey- it closes THIS Friday August 23.
This confidential survey gives our school important feedback
about all aspects of our operations, assisting us to celebrate the great things we are doing and to make changes where they are necessary. Your assistance and support is much appreciated.
Book Week – Dress Up Parade
Tomorrow- Wednesday 21 August
To celebrate Book Week, our students are invited to dress as part of
the theme “Reading is my Secret Power” or to dress as their favourite book character. The parade will be held on our school oval at 9.00am – there are book prizes for a first, second and third best costume in each of P-2 and 3-6. A big thank you is extended to our OHSC provider, Helping Hands, for sponsoring this year’s event.
Book Week is always a highlight on the calendar and as a school we are looking forward to celebrating a love of reading with our students. Judges for this year’s event are Sergeant Ken and Helen Rhue.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Our school offers face-to-face parent/teacher interviews at the end of Term 1 and Term 3. We are nearing the time of the year to commence our planning and preparations for our parent/teacher interview process. Typically, the interviews are held in Weeks 9 and 10 (from 9- 20 September). If they haven’t done so already, teachers will be communicating information about their availability for interviews in the near future. I would encourage each parent to take the time to talk about their child’s progress and development with the class teacher.

I wish to advise that the following teachers will be taking Long Service Leave in the last week of the school term.
Mrs Kerry Cassell (6C) – replaced by Mrs Penny Taylor

Dear Families and Friends
A big thank you to Pine Rivers High School Science staff who visited our school last Wednesday and provided a range of exciting and engaging Science activities for our whole school to participate in. To celebrate Science Week the PRHS staff had organised experiments using slime, magnifying glasses, skeletons, balloons, and wind vanes. Please read below a more detailed account of the day from Mrs Smith, our HOC.
Thank you to our teachers and other staff who attended the Yr 5 Camp last week. Ms Foord, Mrs Hammond, Mr Horne, Chappy Cam and Mr Enchelmaier all reported they had a wonderful time and that our students displayed excellent “Dayboro” behaviour.
For Bookweek - Ten read-aloud commandments (By Author- Mem Fox)
- Spend at least ten wildly happy minutes every single day reading aloud. From birth!
- Read at least three stories a day: it may be the same story three times. Children need to hear a thousand stories before they can begin to learn to read. Or the same story a thousand times!
- Read aloud with animation. Listen to your own voice and don’t be dull, or flat, or boring. Hang loose and be loud, have fun and laugh a lot.
- Read with joy and enjoyment: real enjoyment for yourself and great joy for the listeners
- Read the stories that your child loves, over and over, and over again, and always read in the same ‘tune’ for each book: i.e. with the same intonations and volume and speed, on each page, each time.
- Let children hear lots of language by talking to them constantly about the pictures, or anything else connected to the book; or sing any old song that you can remember; or say nursery rhymes in a bouncy way; or be noisy together doing clapping games
- Look for rhyme, rhythm or repetition in books for young children, and make sure the books are really short.
- Play games with the things that you and the child can see on the page, such as letting kids finish rhymes, and finding the letters that start the child’s name and yours, remembering that it’s never work, it’s always a fabulous game.
- Never ever teach reading, or get tense around books.
- Please read aloud every day because you just adore being with your child, not because it’s the right thing to do.
Have a great week!
Thank you from Mrs Ryan
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
School Support Staff Recognition Week
From 26th August to 30th August we recognise School Support Staff. School Support Staff help to facilitate teaching and learning. School communities need expert, dedicated and skilled School Support Staff. This week it’s time to celebrate these unsung heroes of State Schooling!
Thanks to these staff students have safe, engaging and appropriate learning environments. Everyone in the school is supported by these staff. Without our Cleaners, we would not have clean facilities to use each day. Without our Teacher Aides, our students would not receive the additional support they need to grow in their learning. Without our Schools Officer, our grounds would not be impeccable and things would stay broken. Without our Admin Officers and Business Manager, schools would not have students to enrol, no bills would be paid, no resources paid for, etc.
This year, the Leadership Team at Dayboro State School is providing a breakfast to all of our fantastic Support Staff, to celebrate the great work that they do. If you see a Support Staff member at the school or in the community, please take the time to say “thank you”.
Thank you to our wonderful team for everything you do to make great education happen.

Walkathon prize announcements and prize draws
It was a real pleasure to attend Assembly on Monday (19 August) to announce the winners and to the draws for this year’s Walkathon fundraising event. On behalf of P&C and the School, I would like to thank all students and families who got behind this fundraising event. All monies raised of course go towards funding resources and activities for our School and its Students, and this year’s Walkathon has raised just over $4600.00.
Apart from monies raised by Students, I would also like to sincerely thank our local Dayboro Valley IGA store who not only provided many hundreds of ice blocks to our students on the day of Walkathon, but also for their generous donation of $500.00 towards this event! Because of their involvement and support for Walkathon, we also invited our IGA to decide on the Best Dressed Class pizza party prize category. This year’s Best Dressed Class has been determined to be class 5H. Congratulations 5H!
The next prize category was for a separate Pizza Party for the class which raised the most money. This year we had a very special situation where two classes tied with each raising $739.00! As a result, there will be a joint Pizza Party for this year’s tied class winners who are – 1L and 1D. Congratulations 1L and 1D for your terrific efforts here!!!
P&C would also like to especially acknowledge the contributions and support we received from Classes 1/2A who raised $675.00, and 4B who raised $580.65. Your classes also made wonderful contributions as part of this year’s Walkathon fundraiser.
We also did the draw for the Bike kindly donated by our local Federal MP, Peter Dutton, in which the top 10 students who raised the most money went in the draw for. Again, we had a special situation this year where the 10th highest level of money raised by an individual student was $80.00, and we had three students who tied and raised this amount. As a result, we had 12 students in this draw. Mr Ian Flinders from the Dayboro Lions did the draw for us for the bike prize winner - Maali S (1L). Congratulations Maali!
Our final Walkathon prize draw was for the incentive prizes for students who raised over $50, and we had 23x Students who fell into this category. Mr Ian Flinders of the Lions again did the honour of drawing the three incentive prizes for Gift Cards for the Australian Geographic Shop. The First Incentive Prize is a Gift Card valued at $100.00 went to Avianna O-W (1D); the Second Incentive Prize is a Gift Card valued at $75.00 went to McKenzie P (Prep J); and the Third Incentive Prize is a Gift Card valued at $50.00 went to Eli M (1D). Congratulations Avianna, McKenzie and Eli!!!
Fathers’ Day Stall
P&C’s next event coming up shortly is the Fathers’ Day Stall which will take place in our Hall on Friday 30 August (9-1pm). Keep an eye out for P&C Facebook and School posts and notices about this stall, as well as for parent volunteer list to help us staff this stall for our students on this date.

PE Class of the Week
This week the PE trophy and award went to 5/6F. The students in this class were excellent listeners not only when I was speaking to them and teaching, but also when working in groups. This class did a great job cooperating with each other and speaking nicely, that everyone enjoyed themselves and participated fairly. Well done 5/6F!

Book Week
It is Book Week! We have a busy week ahead in the Library and we would love to see as many students as possible joining in with the celebrations and coming along to see the amazing displays of artwork created by our students.
We have a range of activities for students to be involved with in the Library celebrating some of the books that have been nominated for prizes this year. These activities will run during breaks and during class visits to the Library this week.
The Book Week Character Costume Parade will be held on Wednesday the 21st of August on the school oval from 9.00 a.m. Helping Hands, our outside school hours care provider, has very generously donated the prizes that will be presented during the costume parade. Thank you so much!
Meerkat Productions will be visiting the school on Thursday August 22nd to present a live performance of two of the books that were included in the CBCA Notables list for this year. All payments to attend this performance are due on the 21st of August.
Book Week Award Winners
Congratulations to all the authors and illustrators who were announced as winners of their categories by Children’s Book Council of Australia last week.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 2019 Premier’s Reading Challenge reading period ends this coming Friday the 23rd of August. Remember to submit your list of the books you have read to your teacher as soon as possible to ensure you don’t miss out on your participation certificate from the Premier’s office later in the year.
Thank you
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
What’s happening at Helping Hands?
Last week our children explored painting with different materials such as string, pipe cleaners and sponges. It was exciting to see what the children came up with for their masterpieces. Soccer, touch football, handball, skipping and netball continue to be popular among our children when outside.
A reminder to our children and families that our service works in partnership with school, and this includes following the 5B’s. It is a service rule that children tidy up activities, toys and games prior to moving onto another activity or leaving the service. This includes putting toys/games back where they belong. If this does not occur, then the area will become out of bounds for those responsible. Please ensure your child/ren are following this when they attend care.
Homework club happens Monday to Thursday afternoons from 4:30-5:00pm. It’s great to see children getting into the routine of completing this daily with minimal prompting from educators. If you would like your child/ren to be a part of this, please see one of our friendly team.
September vacation care bookings are now open online. Children need to be enrolled into the service prior to bookings. Please see below for how to do this online. We have exciting excursions to Underwater World and the cinemas, as well as learning to make our own movie and a dance incursion at the service.
Vacancies are available for both morning and afternoon sessions on selected days, and we welcome all children and families to the service. To enrol your child, please visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, selecting Dayboro as your service and following the prompts to access the iParent Portal. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.
