Dear Parents and Caregivers
This Friday is P&C Day, an annual day which celebrates the contribution made by our P&C to our school, whether it be services like the tuckshop and uniform shop or by the varied fundraising activities which are undertaken each year. These fundraising activities have reaped great benefit for our students in terms of new classroom resources, sport equipment and the subsidisation of school activities. On behalf of our students and staff, I join in celebrating the team of people who volunteer and enrich the lives of each and every student!
As it is National Volunteer Week, I would also like to take the opportunity to thank our many classroom volunteers for value adding to our classrooms during the past year. Your extra help enriches the learning experiences of our students, something for which we are very grateful.
P&C Meeting
At our last P&C Meeting on Monday 9 May, the position of President was filled. The position of President was not filled previously at the Annual General Meeting. I would like to congratulate Ms Rhiannon Fealy for nominating and accepting the role of President for 2022/23. We look forward to Rhiannon joining our P&C team from the next meeting.
Our recent ice-cream day was again very successful with just over $200 raised towards Student Council fundraising. Many thanks to Sergeant Ken and his team of helpers for supporting our school fundraising activities. Our next fundraiser is scheduled for Wednesday 8 June – “Wear your favourite Sports Clothes/Jerseys, with proceeds going towards our school chaplaincy activities.
Parking Safety in our School Area
Safety is always the first priority at our school. Could I please remind everyone of the need to follow the traffic regulations in relation to the no standing signs in Cruice Street - between 8.00-9.00am and 2.30-3.30pm on school days, the area in the cul-de-sac is a ‘No Standing’ area. I have received complaints about motorists parking in the area and hope that this newsletter article creates an awareness and a cooperation in ensuring student safety remains as a top priority for us all.
Prep Enrolments -2023
We are already receiving enquiries about our Prep program for 2023. We are pleased to provide information and enrolment information anytime at our school office. However, I am able to advise that our Prep Information and Enrolment Morning will be held on Wednesday 17 August at 9.30am in our School Hall.
If you have a child born between 1 July 2016 – 30 June 2017, he/she is eligible for Prep enrolment at Dayboro State School in 2023. Please note that Dayboro State School has an Enrolment Management Plan in place – please check the link below for for further information.
We have had several enquiries regarding enrolling at Dayboro Prep from outside the catchment area. Families who view Dayboro as their school of choice are very welcome to submit an enrolment application, however the outcome of the application will not be advised until late October when available places are allocated in the order of receipt.
I would be pleased if this information could be circulated to people who are known to you and are wishing to enrol in our Prep program in 2023.
School Uniform
With the cooler weather approaching, our students will want to start wearing jumpers and long pants. All students are required to wear the correct school uniform to school. The wearing of school uniform is most desirable and strongly encouraged. It helps to promote a sense of belonging, minimises school clothing costs as well as providing an important safety measure for children on excursions.
Winter Uniform
- School Hat
- School Polo Shirt and Shorts or Skorts, or Formal Uniform
- Navy Jumper
- Navy Long pants
Other coloured jumpers or jackets or black jumpers with motifs or patterns are not part of our school uniform. We appreciate your support with our uniform policy.
Traditionally, winter brings the highest amount of lost or displaced clothing.
Could I please ask parents to ensure that all clothing (particularly coats, track pants and hats) are clearly marked so that items can be returned to their owners.

Dear Families and Friends
This week we celebrate and recognise what it means to be
Under 8!
The theme this year is “Play in a changing world!”
In this rapidly changing world, never has play and a sense of fun and exploration been more important!!! Getting outside, re-connecting with nature, learning the art of conversation and playing with friends are the building blocks of creating curious, engaged and successful learners for life.
Under 8’s Day this week will be celebrated at Dayboro State School on Friday May 20th. See details below. Parents and friends of our younger children in P-2 are invited to come along and celebrate with us! Many thanks to our hardworking P-2 team who have organised this event!
Precision in Teaching and Learning, Deepening our Clarity
In my regular visits to classes this term, I have been delighted to talk with students who have been working so hard on their goals in Writing. They have all spoken so clearly to me about their next steps and goals in each of their writing tasks. They can clearly articulate what they need to work on to improve their writing. This term, P-3 classes have been looking at Narratives and exploring what makes stories interesting- characters, settings, plot etc. The Yr 4, 5 and 6 students have been exploring the art of persuasion and looking at how a range of persuasive devices are used in advertising.
I love to ask these 5 questions about their learning
*What are you learning?
*How are you going?
*How do you know?
*How can you improve?
*Where do you go for help?
These are also great questions for parents to ask their children about their learning and help prompt conversations about learning at school.
Thank you to all the students and staff involved in NAPLAN testing last week. You all worked very hard and should be congratulated on your efforts.
Thought for the week!
Thank you from Mrs Ryan
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”

Change to Report Card Format
Dear Parents / Carers,
At the end of this semester you will see that this year’s report card formatting is slightly different to what it has been in the past.
This year you will see an achievement and effort rating only for your child.
At the end of the report card there will be a behaviour comment as well as an overall comment encompassing your child’s academic progress.
If you have any questions about your child’s progress after receiving the report card, please contact your child’s teacher.
An e-mail will be sent to parents prior to report cards, reminding you of your child’s term overviews which outline what curriculum was taught throughout the semester in each learning area.
If you have any questions at all about these changes, please email me: dmath9@eq.edu.au
Thank you
Dee Mathiesen
Acting Head of Department – Curriculum
On Thursday 5 May 2022, Sarah and Amanda from Spina Bifida Disability Services delivered a class talk to our Year 1’s. Sarah and Amanda read a story to the students, discussed the different types of Spina Bifida and how Spina Bifida might affect a student’s functioning. Thank you to Sarah and Amanda for helping Dayboro SS students be more inclusive of those with differences in our school.

Library and Maker Space News
Book Fair
Thank you to all of the students and their families who came along to support this year’s Book Fair. We hope you are enjoying reading your new books.
The Book Fair raised $1500 for the Library to purchase new books and we have already placed our first order for books requested by students! Keep an eye out for these books when they arrive in the Library.
Book Borrowing and Returns
We have had quite a few disruptions to our weekly borrowing schedule this term with multiple Monday public holidays and allocation of the Library space to facilitate NAPLAN online testing. These changes have had an impact on the number of opportunities students have had to borrow new books and to return overdue books. A reminder that students are welcome to exchange their reading books during breaks on any day (even if it is not their regular day for class borrowing). Students who have overdue books are asked to return these as soon as possible. Remember to check school bags, book shelves, bedrooms and tidy trays at school for any books that may be missing. Thank you!
National Simultaneous Storytime
Students in all year levels are welcome to join in with the 22nd annual National Simultaneous Storytime event next Wednesday the 25th of May during first break from 11.00 a.m. After listening to this year’s book, “Family Tree”, students are welcome to stay for the remainder of first break and join in with our celebration activities.
Reminders

To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 2 need to read or experience 20 books, students in Year 3 and Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books. Reading record sheets are available from class teachers and from the Library.
Have a great week!

Chappy Week 2022
(May 22 – 29)
Hi everyone, this week I thought I would share a bit about what I do in the day to day at Dayboro State School.
This year I started running ‘Chappy’s Playtime Activities’. Most lunch breaks you will find me doing a range of activities with the students, from chalk drawing, playing card games (UNO & Spot It are the favourites of the students at the moment!), handball competitions, running (and coaching) cricket games on the oval, basketball games (go team ‘Hats’!), Year 1 vs Year 2 soccer games and so on. In Term 1 we had ‘Chappy’s Dance Party’ in the hall, with students dancing along to some Just Dance videos. On the last day of term, we were able to put on a free of charge Chappy’s Cheeseburger Day thanks to our chaplaincy sponsors. My local chaplaincy committee did a great job helping to organise and run this. I have regular weekly visits to help out in classrooms around the school. I love my ‘Fun Friday’s’ in 1M and reading to the preppies. Behind the scenes, I was able to provide food hampers and new uniforms to families affected by the floods in Dayboro. I meet with certain students weekly to provide some extra emotional support. My office is located in the Hive (Learning Support Room), so I get to see the wonderful students who visit there each week and am available to assist Mrs Hammond and Mrs T if things are particularly busy.
In the Easter holiday break I worked at a Scripture Union Day camp (the Moreton Bay Super Sports Camp). This was a great 3 days of games and trying new sports. A couple of children from Dayboro State School also came along with me. They had a great time having fun and making new friends.
This term I have started working through the ‘Big Life Journal’ with some students. These are journals designed by psychologists to help improve wellbeing by building self-esteem and resilience in young people. The students work with me one on one and get to keep their journal once completed. It is going great!
I am really enjoying being the chaplain here at Dayboro State School. I am grateful to be able to get to know and support the students, parents and staff in whatever way I can.
If you ever have any questions or need assistance with anything, please don’t hesitate to send me an e-mail at rachael.woodrow@suchaplaincy.org.au. That is what I am here for ?
Colouring in Competition
Next week I am running a Chappy Week colouring in competition. There is a family pass to Event Cinemas on offer for one winner from each year level (a big thank you to Sergeant Ken and the DSF for sponsoring this awesome prize!)
Each child will be given a colouring in picture on Monday and need to return it to their teacher by Friday 27 May. Good luck!
Good Afternoon Parents and Caregivers,
Highlights over the past fortnight include our STEM Club on a Friday morning. Each week, children are presented with a challenge from Miss Katie and are provided with the required resources. Children have shown critical thinking, persistence, problem-solving and peer encouragement to complete the challenges. Children built a paper rocket launcher using milk bottles and paper one week, resulting in children launching their paper rockets over and over for most of the morning. Last week they designed their own lego marble run. Some children opted to complete this in pairs and others individual, allowing for collaboration to occur. Over the next two weeks, children will be building a newspaper shelter and exploring shadow tower building. Joining STEM Club is of no extra cost, however children will need to be enrolled and booked in on a Friday morning to participate.
Given we have spent a considerable amount of time inside due to wet weather, children have been participating in brain break challenges to ensure they are still participating in movement activities. These have been presented in a this or that format, allowing children to get to know each other and their educators on a different level. Exercises have included lunges, jumping jacks, jumping squats and high knees.
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Alternatively, please send the service a text message on the mobile number below. Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no-show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Need a helping hand before or after school? Enrolling your child/ren is easy and there are no enrolment fees. Visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au , click 'How to enrol’ on the right-hand side of the page, and follow the steps. When this is submitted, we will be in touch as soon as possible to support the finalisation of your enrolment and initial bookings. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny or Katie at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts team on 1300 612 462.
