Dear Parents and Caregivers
As this is the last newsletter for Term 1, I would again like to take the opportunity to thank the school community for the wonderful support as we negotiated the various hurdles encountered throughout the first weeks of school.
Our first term has been punctuated with COVID-19 interruptions and weather and flood issues, but our staff have remain focussed and intent on providing the best possible educational experiences for all students. A big thank you is extended to our parents and caregivers who have supported us in keeping students home who have been unwell and following the guidelines provided by Qld Health. It has really helped with limiting the extent of illness across our school. No one knows what the future holds, but we are hoping that the traction we are building now continues throughout the next term, and indeed, the rest of the year.
Our school says “Bullying. No Way!” on the National Day of Action
Two important messages were emphasised throughout the day. Firstly, if anyone is feeling unsafe and/or are being bullied in any way, it must be reported to a teacher, parent or another adult so that action can be taken. If there are any issues happening at school, parents can play a major role in ensuring that a child’s teacher or school administration are made aware of the issue. Secondly, bystanders of any types of bullying have a big responsibility to report bullying behaviours to teachers or other adults so appropriate action can be taken. We all have to work together to ensure that our school remains a safe and supportive environment for everyone!
Our Story Dog Humphrey came along on Friday and helped spread the message about the day – orange tail to show his support!
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent-Teacher interviews are occurring over the next two weeks. Everyone should have now received a SOBS (School Online Booking System) link to enable a booking to be made. Please take the opportunity to attend the school to meet your child/ren’s teacher/s and review student progress at this time.
P&C AGM
The Annual General Meeting of the P&C was held on Monday 14 March. In my report I acknowledged the previous executive and offered my thanks for the wonderful contributions to our school. I would also like to extend my thanks to the new members who have joined the P&C this year and to the parents who have volunteered to assist with school activities throughout the year. I would like to acknowledge Karen Hockings and Cara Diak for their ongoing assistance with the Uniform Shop and Book Club respectively.
For our executive for 2022, it is congratulations and thank you to :-
Secretary:- Mia Gillies
Treasurer:- Jo Herricane
At this stage, we are still looking for a President and Vice-President to join the executive for 2022. If anyone is interested in fulfilling these roles, please contact the secretary@dayboropandc.org.au
All parents are invited to P&C Meetings which are generally held on the second Monday of each month. Due to public holidays the next meeting will be held via Teams on Monday 9 May.
New Solar Panels
As part of the Advancing Clean Energy Schools program, Dayboro State School will shortly be receiving solar panels which will reduce our electricity charges by up to 40 percent.
The 40KW system with some 150 panels will be installed from Monday March 28 on the roof of the CSA building. It is anticipated that this process will take up to 2 weeks.
Some access to the CSA will be limited at various times and safety nets will be appearing shortly in preparation .
After the installation, energy generated during the school day will be directed completely towards the school’s energy needs. On weekends, holidays and other periods when demand is low, most energy will be returned to the grid.
The installation also provides the opportunity for curriculum activities. Students and teachers will have access to all generating information and explore supply and demand issues.

Dear Families and Friends
Bullying No Way!
What is bullying?
- keeps picking on you again and again and tries to make you feel bad
- says or does lots of mean things that upset you
- makes fun of you a lot
- tries to stop you from joining in or make others not like you
- keeps hurting you such as hitting or punching you.
Bullying feels awful. You feel like you can’t stop it.
Bullying can happen in person or online.
It might be something people can see or it might be hidden.
Sometimes you might have a fight or argument with someone.
If it happens once, it is not bullying even though it can be upsetting.
It is also not bullying if you sometimes fight with a friend and you can sort it out.
It is important to have some strategies to help your child know what to say and do in response to bullying.
Tell a trusted person like a teacher, family member or a friend, that you feel you could talk to if you, or someone you know, is experiencing bullying.
Bullying is not OK. Every child has the right to feel safe.
High Five Strategies
Every year Dayboro State School students learn about our High Five Strategies. These strategies are tools students can use in the playground and school environment to help deal with conflict or a problem situation with other students.
We encourage our students to start at number one when dealing with a problem with their peers and work through the steps until the problem is resolved or needs further assistance.
When a student feels they are in a situation of conflict or disagreement they can do the High Five:
- Talk Friendly – use respectful words to tell the person about the problem in a calm way and suggest ways to solve the problem.
- Talk Firmly – Use a serious voice without yelling to get the message across. Don’t smile or wave arms about. Be assertive but don’t give put downs.
- Ignore – Look away. Don’t smile. Distract yourself by thinking of something else. Do not speak any further with the person.
- Walk Away – Move away from the student involved in the problem. Find a friend or go to the playground or library.
- Report – Ask a teacher for help. In the playground look for the teacher on duty. Explain the problem to them in an honest way. Tell the teacher the strategies you have used already.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent teacher interviews here at Dayboro have begun! They will continue over the next two weeks. Thank you to those parents who have already organised their times and attended their interviews. Our teachers go to a lot of effort to prepare for these interviews and look forward to sharing the progress of every child in their class, so it is important that all parents take the opportunity to attend.
Below is some information from the following website, supported by the Australian Government and Social Services Dept., about what to expect at Parent Teacher Interviews, particularly if you’re are a first time school parent!
Parent-teacher interviews at primary school: what to expect
Throughout your child’s time in primary school, you might be asked to attend parent-teacher interviews, or conferences, usually once or twice a year.
These interviews are usually just short meetings – about 10-15 minutes – between you and your child’s teacher or teachers. Every parent is invited to attend at least one interview a year. Being invited to a parent-teacher interview doesn’t mean there’s a problem with your child’s progress.
Interviews might be held during school hours, before or after school, or in the evening. It’s good to make a time when both parents can go along, if you can. If you can’t manage any of the available times, you could call the school to arrange another time.
It’s important to be on time for parent-teacher interviews. But be aware that teachers might be running late because previous interviews have run over time.
Why it’s worth going to parent-teacher interviews
Parent-teacher interviews give you a great opportunity to:
- learn more about your child’s academic, emotional and social development
- meet and get to know your child’s teachers
- help your child’s teachers understand more about your child
- make plans with the teacher about how you can both support your child
- build a relationship with your child’s school
If you don’t have any particular concerns, you might wonder whether it’s worth going to parent-teacher interviews. But going along is one way to show your child that you’re interested in their learning and what’s happening for them at school.
Of course, if you do have concerns, it’s a chance for you to raise them with your child’s teacher if you haven’t done that already.
Please remember that children are expected to wait in the CSA before School between 8:15am until the bell goes at 8:40am. The children are supervised during this time. There should not be children playing on equipment or waiting outside classrooms before this time.

Library
We are now in the last two weeks of the term. Please ensure all overdue books are returned to the Library before the school holidays.
Readers Cup Competition
Ten students from Year 5 and Year 6 have begun preparing for the annual Readers Cup Competition. Readers Cup is a reading competition organised by the Queensland Branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia. This year’s regional competition will be held at Kurwongbah State School in June.
Students in each team are required to read 5 novels to prepare for the competition. On the day of competition there are several rounds of questions with teams working together to provide answers. These rounds of questions can be quite challenging at times – there are a lot of details to remember! We wish all of the Readers Cup students the very best as they prepare for the competition.
Maker Space
We have had a lot of inventors continuing to build all manner of constructions in maker space over the last couple of weeks - we have seen everything from robots to doll houses being made. A special Thank-you to Mya in Year 6 who brought along some fabric to share with other students in the maker space – students used it to create clothing, toys, bags…
We would like to thank families who have kindly donated cardboard boxes – our inventors have enjoyed digging through the various boxes to use in their designs. Due to the enthusiasm of the students we are still in need of cardboard boxes. All donations are happily accepted.
Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
Book Fair
Book Fair is on the way!
Book Fair is set to begin on May 6th and will run until May 11th.
Keep an eye out for further information coming home after the school holidays. In the meantime families are more able to preview some of the exciting books that will be available at Book Fair.
School Chaplaincy – What is it?
Spiritual Support
Part of the school chaplain’s role - according to the Department of Education - is providing an additional dimension to the school’s care, guidance and support of students with spiritual and/or religious needs. Importantly, school chaplains must not undermine the religious, or other, beliefs of students. Chaplains must not attempt to convert students to a religion by proselytising or evangelising. Chaplaincy services are inclusive of, and show respect for, all religious and non-religious beliefs and other stances represented in the school community. All activities and events provided are optional, non-discriminatory and equally available to students of all beliefs, and are provided at the discretion of the school principal, in consultation with the school community.
You can contact Chappy Rachael directly by sending an e-mail to rachael.woodrow@suchaplaincy.org.au if you have any further questions.
Vacation Care Fun
Vacation care is fast approaching. See below for what we have planned each day.
To book, login to your iParent Portal and secure your places ASAP.
Not enrolled? See below for how to enrol so your child/ren can join in on the fun.
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iParent Portal.
This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings.
Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no-show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Looking to join in on the fun? Enrolling your child/ren is easy and there are no enrolment fees. Visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au , click 'How to enrol’ on the right-hand side of the page, and follow the steps. When this is submitted, we will be in touch as soon as possible to support the finalisation of your enrolment and initial bookings.
If you have any issues, please contact Jenny or Katie at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts team on 1300 612 462.
