School Chaplaincy – What is it?

Spiritual Support

Part of the school chaplain’s role - according to the Department of Education - is providing an additional dimension to the school’s care, guidance and support of students with spiritual and/or religious needs. Importantly, school chaplains must not undermine the religious, or other, beliefs of students. Chaplains must not attempt to convert students to a religion by proselytising or evangelising. Chaplaincy services are inclusive of, and show respect for, all religious and non-religious beliefs and other stances represented in the school community. All activities and events provided are optional, non-discriminatory and equally available to students of all beliefs, and are provided at the discretion of the school principal, in consultation with the school community.
