Back into Learning
While it was wonderful to see how our students and teachers were committed to continuing learning during the lock down period, it has been even better to see our students back at school and engaged! Teachers have picked up where they left off with the learning and most classes are heading into their assessment period for their first units of the semester.
As the students are starting their drafts for their writing tasks, teachers have been referring them to access their class Learning Walls to get support. These Learning Walls have the anchor charts, which are from the previous lesson learnings, and also word walls to assist the students with vocab choices. They have also been modelling how to Bump Up their work by using their Bump It Up walls. These show the students exactly how to use the success criteria to make their work even better. We love making the learning really explicit here at Dayboro SS. Why don’t you ask your child about their class’ Learning Wall and Bump it Up Wall?

Calendar changes for school events
As a result of lockdown restrictions, we have changed a few of our events for the end of Term 3, postponing some and unfortunately cancelling others. Please see the latest draft (draft 4) of the Parent Calendar attached with our revised dates for term 3. Of particular note are:
- Junior Sports Day has been postponed to Week 10, Friday 17 September
- Book Week dress up parade has been postponed to week 3 of Term 4. At this stage the Meerkats production is still booked
- Dance Fever lessons are expected to resume in week 7, 26 August (we will be in contact if this is unable to occur)
- Prep 2022 Information Session postponed until 31 August
Currently we are hoping that we will still be able to go ahead with all other school events after 22 August, including Year 5 camp. We will certainly be in touch if restrictions mean that we have to reschedule, postpone or cancel. Thank you for your understanding.
A message from our Student Council
Pyjama Day!
Our Student Council would like to proceed with their original plan to host ‘Pyjama Day’ as a way to give back. Please see the message from Hollie and Isla below:
On Friday 20th August we are having a Pyjama Day! Pyjama day is about wearing your favourite pair of pyjamas to raise money for children in foster care. There are some children who have parents that can no longer look after them so they go to foster carers to be looked after. The Pyjama Foundation raises money so that children in foster care can still learn the same as everyone else with the help of volunteers called ‘Pyjama Angels’. These Pyjama Angels read stories to the children.
So, on Friday 20th August (week six) come to school in your sun safe pyjamas and bring a gold coin along. We will do some reading activities on the day. Thank you and have a nice day!
Have a great week!
Gabrielle
Dear Families and Friends
PARTNERSHIPS
Here at Dayboro we are fortunate to have built and sustained lasting and successful partnerships with a range of education providers. At this time of year, we start to look forward to a very important part of our role here at Dayboro and that is educating our students for all settings and preparing them for change. Not only do we start to think about welcoming and providing information to our future Prep students and families but we also begin to prepare our Yr. 6 students for the next phase of their education journey- the transition into high school.
Our Partnerships with both early educators and high schools are very important to us and we encourage their involvement and participation in our school as much as we can.
To help with the transition from Kindy to Prep we are planning to hold a PREP INFORMATION session NOW on Tuesday 31st August at 9:30 am where all parents enrolling their children in Prep in 2022 are welcome to attend and learn more about our school and our Prep rooms and teachers. We follow this information session up with a series of visits to Prep for these students in Term 4. These are our Orientation days and our Prep teachers look forward to meeting and getting to know our future Preps also.
In term 3 and 4, we also enjoy hosting visiting teachers from our local high schools to see how our students are progressing. We also communicate regularly with our local early childhood care providers and we have invited our early childcare teachers to come and visit our school to join us in workshops and to pass on information about our learning programs here at Dayboro. (Although this has not happened as much as we would like during the present situation!!!!)
Basically, we love getting to know our new students and we also love to
pass onto others how amazing Dayboro students are.
Of course, our most important partnership is with our families!
Even though schools look a bit different at the moment for parents visiting etc., we want you to know that we are still able to communicate through phone calls and emails. We are looking forward to having our parents, volunteers and visitors back on site soon.
IMPORTANT PBL NEWS!
Our Awards are: Be Kind, Be positive, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Proud and Be Tolerant. The Principal’s Award is also given out each week.
We did not have our usual awards in Week 4 and 5. But teachers will be on the look out for worthy recipients this week for next week, Week 6.
Every week we also have 4 students who receive GOTCHA awards. These students are spotted by other teachers in the playgrounds and classrooms and rewarded for doing the right thing with a GOTCHA award. They then go into the draw box where very week 4 students names are pulled out of the box. The winners receive a prize from the Prize Box and an ice block voucher.
We will draw the Gotchas in Week 6. week’s GOTCHA award winners.
TUCKSHOP – OPEN as an Essential Service
Tuckshop is considered an essential service and as such will continue to serve our students. Providing a sense of normalcy and offering parents options is a priority during these challenging times. In adherence to Covid restrictions, only three people can attend, less than we would usually require. As such, we will do our best and thank you (and the children) for your understanding. Thanks also to Alison and our volunteers for their ongoing support.
UNIFORM SHOP – CLOSED
The Uniform shop will be closed for the next two Wednesdays. Orders can still be placed on order form via email to uniformshop@dayboropandc.org.au however orders may not be filled until current restrictions are eased. Should your order be urgent, or the restrictions continue, the P&C will work with the school and our uniform coordinator to put in place other fill and pick-up arrangements.

We're seeking feedback from all current Prep families on your prep experience so we can improve our information for the upcoming Prep Open Day and also improve your experience ongoing! If you don’t have a preppie in 2021 but would still like to participate, you’re welcome to do so. Just let us know in the last question. All responses are anonymous unless you choose to provide your details!

Maker Space
We missed seeing everyone in the maker space last week so we’ve included some photos from earlier this term. Box construction has been a very popular choice as a lunch time activity, in fact we have run out of boxes! If you have any empty boxes, especially the thinner type of cardboard used to make cereal boxes, muesli bar boxes, etc. we would be grateful to accept them for the construction table in the maker space (please note we cannot accept donated egg cartons due to allergy risk).
Book Week Celebrations – Change of Dates for Dayboro State School for 2021
Due to current Education Queensland restrictions limiting the size of gatherings we have made the difficult decision to reschedule our Book Week celebrations for October 18th - October 22nd.
The new date for our annual Character Costume Parade will be October 20th. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but we are hoping that by delaying our event there may be an opportunity for more members of our school community to be involved.
We cannot wait to see all of the awesome costumes!
At this stage the Meerkat Productions team will still be visiting the school on August 26th to perform a live-action retelling of two of the books that have been nominated to win prizes during Book Week. This year’s books are “Your Birthday was the Best” for lower school students and “Aster’s Good, Right Things” for upper school students. The cost to attend the performance is $8.80 per student.
If current Education Queensland restrictions limiting the size of gatherings and visitors to schools are extended beyond the 22nd of August the date of performance will be rescheduled.
Book Week Display Progress Pictures
We have continued working on our displays and decorations in preparation for Book Week 2021. The Library is definitely starting to look amazing. We can’t wait to see the displays once all of the student contributions have been added!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
A reminder that this year’s Premier’s Reading Challenge ends on 27th of August. Remember to get your reading record sheets back to your class teacher.
Australian Reading Hour
Join us on Tuesday 14 September 2021 to celebrate the joy of reading!
About Australian Reading Hour
Originally launched by Australian libraries and library associations for the National Year of Reading in 2012, the Australian Reading Hour began as an event for all Australians to set aside one hour on one day to read – whatever they wanted, wherever they were located, and however they chose to read.
It has since become an annual program featuring events with Australian authors, writers, poets and illustrators in libraries, schools, bookshops, and even in shopping centres, and on public transport. (https://australiareads.org.au/australian-reading-hour/)
Have a great week!

Good Afternoon Parents and Caregivers
Badminton has been a new game for a handful of our children in recent weeks, with high levels of commitment to be able to hit the shuttlecock successfully. Children identified the similarities badminton has to other sports and games like tennis and handball. Discussions arose around the different racquets used and net heights during this activity. Hearing children identify independently the similarities and differences in skills used in different sports helps them to grasp rules and techniques with confidence.
We have constructed with magic sand and playdough, creating houses, Olympic medals and various other items. It has been a delight to observe children engaging in positive conversations and strengthening relationships with their peers.
Rock painting was a hit with our children last week, with different designs coming to life. Children were ecstatic to paint and create on something different.
Our service acknowledged National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day 2021 on the 4th August. This year's theme, Proud in Culture, Strong in Spirit was discussed with our children whilst participating in an art activity. We learned about the traditional colours of our local tribe; blue, yellow, cream and brown. Our children participated in this conversation and acknowledgement with enthusiasm to increase their knowledge about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, because they know that understanding is a crucial component in developing cultural competence.
Congratulations to Claire Hough for her effort in her drawing to become the cover of our local phonebook for 2022. Well done!!
A reminder that if your child/ren participate in extra-curricular activities either before or after school, a new permission form will need to be signed to coincide with the new school term.
Thank you to all our parents for complying with the mask restriction and remaining outside of the service building. We appreciate your patience during this time.
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings. Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Vacancies are available for both morning and afternoon sessions on selected days, and we welcome all children and families to the service. To enrol your child, please visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, selecting Dayboro as your service and following the prompts to access the iParent Portal. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.
