Dear Parents and Caregivers
As we enter the third week of learning, it has been a pleasure to visit classrooms and witness how engaged our students are and their demonstrated eagerness for learning. By all accounts, it has been a wonderful start to the school year and is worthy of a big thank you to our families for preparing your children so well and to our school staff for the professionalism and diligence in ensuring that students are organised and ready to engage.
Last year was another milestone for our school in terms of the high level of student achievement and the wonderful opinion shared by our local community about the school. I am hoping that the great results achieved in 2019 will be replicated in 2020- we have certainly commenced in a most positive way!
Our Explicit Improvement Agenda in 2020
Our Explicit Improvement Agenda for 2020 will focus on Writing practices and processes, Reading strategies and Numeracy, in particular number facts fluency. Over the past number of years our NAPLAN data has shown significant improvements in student performance and we are aiming at making further improvements in 2020. We are also continuing to work hard on improving our A-E data on the school report cards, in particular moving students who are achieving D and E ratings in Mathematics and English to a C rating or higher. This agenda provides a clear focus for our professional development activities for the year, and importantly how we work together to improve learning outcomes for all our students. Our school budget will also place emphasis on these improvement areas and will utilise funds from the ‘Investing for Success’ program to provide human and physical resources to support our improvement endeavours.
When finalised, all our school planning documents will be published on the school website.
School Website
Our school website has been redesigned and the new site will go live in late February. In the meantime, during the transition period, we are unable to upload any new information or edit our current site.
The new site will feature the same information as the current site , but will have easier navigation and a bold new homepage . We look forward to sharing this with our community very soon.
Bus Transport Info
Brisbane Bus Lines run a School Bus Service (no# P1866) which covers the Kobble Creek Area including (but not exclusive to) Pringles Rd, Farrows Rd, Mt Samson Rd, Aitcheson Rd, Dales Rd. This bus route has very low numbers currently and the Department are hopeful that we may have new families in the area that would like to use this service which in most cases is free of charge.
If you are thinking about using the school bus service, please call Andy Russell at Brisbane Bus Lines on 3354 3633.
Parent Information Sessions
This week teachers will be holding their Parent Information Sessions. These meetings are a wonderful opportunity to engage with your children’s teachers about their plans for the year as well as re-establish the relationship between home, school and the student. Times and dates for the sessions are published in this newsletter. I strongly encourage all parents to attend these important meetings.
P&C Meeting AGM
Our first P&C Meeting for the year was held last night. It was wonderful to see new families coming along and being part of the decision making process for our school and students. The next meeting is the Annual General Meeting on Monday 9 March at 6.30pm. All welcome to attend.
Dayboro State School is 100 Years on its current site in 2020
A very significant milestone for our school will occur on Thursday 25 June. The attached picture and story provides the details of how the school came to be located on Heathwood Hill in 1920. (Courtesy of the Dayboro Facebook site)
To commemorate this important occasion for our school, the 100 Year Commemorative Committee has been formed and will be meeting for the first time this week to develop a program of events to commemorate the special occasion.
If anyone has any memorabilia or any ideas which could be used or brought to the attention of the committee, please forward these to admin@dayboross.eq.edu.au
I am sure the Committee will be communicating planned activities and events in the near future.
School Leaders Induction Ceremony
The 2020 school leaders will be inducted at a special assembly on Monday 17 February at 9.00am. Our special guest will be the Cr Darren Grimwade from Moreton Bay Regional Council who will present our new leaders with their badges of office. All welcome to attend.
School Attendance
I am pleased to advise that Dayboro State School achieved a rate of school attendance in 2019 with a result of 93.5% across the school for the year. Thankyou to our school community for ensuring that “Everyday Counts at Dayboro, Every Day”. In 2020, a target of 96% has been set.
In terms of absences from school, it is by law that the school must know where every student is and the reason why they are not in attendance at school on any particular day. The procedure for an absence is to call the school on 3425 6160 (available 24/7) stating the child’s name and reason for absence. This can also be done through the QParents App on a smartphone. (if no reason is given, an SMS will still be forwarded requesting this information)
I would be pleased, that as a school community, we work in partnership to ensure that our important child protection processes are enacted.
Student Council 2020
Congratulations to the following students who have selected by their class peers as class Student Council Representatives for 2020. Our four school captains are automatically members and leaders of the Council.
I look forward to working with our representatives at our meetings. The Student Council representatives will be presented with their badges at the Student Leaders Induction on Monday 17 February.
Student Leadership Team – 2020
Congratulations to the students who have been selected as leaders for the 2020 school year. The attached list provides details of their positions. As mentioned , they will receive their badges of office at a special ceremony on Monday 17 February.
Proactive Schools Patrol Message from Moreton Bay Regional Council
Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC) Local Laws Unit undertakes a Proactive School Patrol Program where officers complete scheduled school patrols, both in the morning and afternoon, to ensure that vehicles are parked in a safe and lawful manner. The primary aim of the program is to partner with schools across the region to ensure that students and family members/caregivers are able to safely move around the school area as part of dropping off or picking up students from the school.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council Local Law No.5 (Parking) 2011 and Transport Operations (Road Use Management) Act 1999 control parking or stopping of vehicles on footpaths, bicycle paths, shared paths, dividing strips or nature strips. Council is legally required to enforce these controls and the Proactive School Patrol Program forms part of this process. Drivers are reminded that footpaths and nature strips are in place to promote pedestrian movement in a safe manner along roadsides and that drivers and residents must not stop on a bicycle path, shared path, dividing strip or nature strip. Please note that vehicles that are parked with two wheels up and two wheels down is not considered as a lawful parking practice.
Local Laws officers have fact sheets and other relevant information that is provided to drivers to assist with education surrounding safe parking in school zones. Enforcement through the issuance of Penalty Infringement Notices is carefully considered as part of each Proactive School Patrol.
Visit
for further guidance on parking restrictions.
For any further information, members of the School community are welcome to contact Mr Bradley Foley, Local Laws Coordinator on 3205 0555.
Message from Department of Education Director General – Mr Tony Cook regarding Novel Coronavirus
Dear Parents & Caregivers I am writing to update you on the Novel Coronavirus. As you would be aware, the Australian Government has announced new measures that specifically address travel restrictions from mainland China. While there remains a very low risk of transmission in Australia, these preventative measures are being instigated in the interest of public health. I do not expect that these travel restrictions will have any major impact on our school operations and I want to assure you that we will continue to work to ensure any disruption is minimised. Our school will be open this week as usual as we progress through Semester 1 2020. As always, the health and wellbeing of our students remains our number one priority and I would ask that you remain alert to your child’s/children’s wellbeing during this time. Children can have a range of reactions during an event like this and, as always, teacher and guidance support is available. If you have any concerns, please discuss them with your child’s teacher. We continue to take advice from Queensland Health and the Department of Education in relation to this matter and the latest information is available at Novel Coronavirus on the Queensland Health website. Queensland had already announced and enacted restrictions last week for travellers who had visited China (including Hong Kong), and I reiterate this earlier advice from our health agencies, which remains current:
On a personal level, can I ask that as a school community we all look out for and support each other during this time. Again, thank you for your understanding and attention to this important matter. |

Principal
Dear Families and Friends
Every year Dayboro State School students learn about our High Five Strategies. These strategies are tools students can use in the playground and school environment to help deal with conflict or a problem situation with other students.
We encourage our students to start at number one when dealing with a problem with their peers and work through the steps until the problem is resolved or needs further assistance.
When a student feels they are in a situation of conflict or disagreement they can do the High Five:
- Talk Friendly – use respectful words to tell the person about the problem in a calm way and suggest ways to solve the problem.
- Talk Firmly – Use a serious voice without yelling to get the message across. Don’t smile or wave arms about. Be assertive but don’t give put downs.
- Ignore – Look away. Don’t smile. Distract yourself by thinking of something else. Do not speak any further with the person.
- Walk Away – Move away from the student involved in the problem. Find a friend or go to the playground or library.
- Report – Ask a teacher for help. In the playground look for the teacher on duty with a high five poster on the back of their folder. Explain the problem to them in an honest way. Tell the teacher the strategies you have used already.
Now that the days are starting to get warmer please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during play times and PE lessons. The rule is “No Hat, no Play!”
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.
Dear Parents
The teachers will be holding beginning of the year Parent Information sessions in Week 3 this term. The dates and times for each class are as below. Teachers will have sent out class invitations for next week with more details. We look forward to seeing you all at these information sessions as they will provide you with a wealth of information about your child’s year of learning ahead.
SWIMMING – Years 3 and 4.
Swimming starts this term for Yr. 3 and 4 students at the Dayboro pool. Classes 3P, 3M, 4B, 4/5H (Yr 4’s only) and 4R will be swimming from Week 4 until Week 8. They will swim every Thursday and Friday for a 1/2hr lesson for 5 weeks. Notes and invoices have been sent home this week. The cost will be approx.$100 These lessons are an important part of our curriculum and all students are expected to attend. 2/3L will swim together in Term 4.
Thank you Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Welcome back to another year!
Welcome back to all of our existing families and a warm welcome to our new ones. It has been wonderful to see our students back at school with bright big smiles, eager to learn. For new families to us, in my section of the newsletter you will find out about all things finance related.
Term 1 Invoices
Students have been invoiced for the following activities:
Letters have now been sent home to families. If you require a payment plan for any of the above, please don’t hesitate to contact the school.
Payment: Plans & How to Pay
Payment plans are available for all families, whether you are experiencing financial difficulties or you would prefer to pay for excursions / camps in a lengthy timeframe. Payments must be made regularly, and must be completed by 27th November 2020. This is to ensure all of our excursions are reconciled and meet financial deadlines.
There are several ways to pay for excursions and school activities at Dayboro State School:
- Online payments - BPOINT
By clicking on the BPOINT link on your invoice, it will take you directly to the website to pay.
- Paying by phone.
If you do not wish to process payments online, you are able to pay by phone using a credit/debit card via BPOINT 1300 631 073.
Please quote the CRN and invoice number located at the bottom of the invoice. .
- Paying in person.
You can pay in person at the Dayboro State School Administration using EFTPOS, Visa, MasterCard or cash.
Paying with Cash
Dayboro State School is progressing towards becoming a cashless school, which means paying for excursions by cash is no longer our preferred method of payment.
If students are taking the money to school, they will be required to come to the office before school or at lunch times for payments. Ideally, students making payments should be paid to the office before school, between 8am and 8:40am.
At no time should a student give any money to classroom teachers for excursions, teachers will redirect students to the office to pay for invoices. Students/parents will be provided with a receipt at the time of payment.
Please note – this does not include the Tuckshop or Uniform Shop. As they are run by the P&C, the school cannot accept payments for these two areas. Please contact the P&C directly for questions regarding payment options.
Volunteering in Classrooms
New legislation is coming into place in 2020 surrounding volunteering and Blue Cards. Blue Card Services require parents to hold a ‘V’ Blue Card when volunteering in a class that their child is not enrolled in (i.e. your child is in a Prep class but you are volunteering in a Year 1 class). Grandparents who are volunteering require a ‘V’ Blue Card, regardless of the class volunteering in.
Currently, it is free of charge to gain a Volunteer ‘V’ Blue Card. Copies of the form can be obtained from the office, please don’t hesitate to contact the school for more information.
Facilities Hire
As Dayboro State School has a strong association with the local community, we allow community groups to hire certain areas of the school. Our facilities such as the Hall, Under Covered Area (CSA), Oval and Tennis Court are available to hire at a set cost.
All Facilities Hire arrangements need to be discussed with the Business Manager and are approved by the Principal. All fees go directly into the school, whether that be maintaining our grounds and facilities, or providing additional resources for our students.
For more information on our Facilities Hire, please contact the school office.
Voluntary Contributions
By participating in the Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme, Dayboro SS is able to provide classroom resources, home readers and other consumables to enhance learning activities for Literary, Numeracy, Science, Art and Technology.
The costs involved in the Voluntary Financial Contributions are:
- $50 per student; or
- $100 per family of two or more enrolled students.
Proceeds raised through the Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme will benefit all students, so we encourage parents to participate in the scheme.
The Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme is approved by the P&C each year, and is aligned to the Department of Education policy requirements.
Payments can be made from the following methods:
- Online payments - BPOINT
Click here for a direct link to BPOINT.
- Paying by phone.
If you do not wish to process payments online, you are able to pay by phone using a credit/debit card via BPOINT 1300 631 073.
Please quote the CRN and invoice number below.
- Paying in person.
You can pay in person at the Dayboro State School Administration using EFTPOS, Visa, MasterCard or cash*.
My role also includes managing the Intervention and Extension programs across our school, from intensive small group teaching (Tier 3 students) to organising Opti-MINDS and Extension Days at Pine Rivers State High School.
I am also part of a team that meets weekly to discuss student support needs across the school and plan strategies to address these needs. This team includes the Deputy Principal, the Guidance Officer and our Special Education teachers.
This year I will be running several parent workshops on Reading, Spelling and Numeracy that will be advertised in the newsletter. If you have any questions regarding Curriculum, Intervention or Extension programs at the school, please come and have a chat (LEAP room, B block) or contact the office and I will phone you.

New Books
We have had some amazing new books delivered to the Library already this year. Quite a few of the new books have a dog as one of the main characters. “My Friend Fred” is about the friendship between a very cheeky dachshund and his mystery friend who is revealed at the end of the story. Younger students have enjoyed this story and have been pleasantly surprised by the ending. We have also had some new non-fiction books delivered with information about the early days of English settlement in Australia.

Borrowing
It has been fantastic to see so many enthusiastic borrowers come to the Library already this year! When children borrow books we are hoping to foster a love of reading by helping children to select a book they will enjoy and not find overly challenging to read. During class visits we have been discussing the “just right” strategy for students to use when selecting books. This strategy empowers students to select books that will allow them to read with independence, but still provide them with an opportunity to improve their reading.
Students who are in need of a Library bag can come to the Library to take one of the donated shopping bags that we have available to use as a Library bag, or they can make their own bag during lunch break in the Maker space. Remember that students do not have to wait until their class borrowing day to exchange books.
Maker Space
We have had a busy start to the year in the maker space. We have had children coming along to make items of their own creation as well as completing some of the challenges that have been set up. The Lego maze construction was a popular choice.
Also, it is Queensland School Library Week. This is a snapshot from Education Queensland's Facebook Page
Thank you,
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.

PINE RIVERS DISTRICT - SWIMMING TRIALS
The ‘Pine Rivers District - Primary School Swimming Trials’ take place on Wednesday February 19th, at the Lawnton Pool. We are pleased to say that eight Dayboro State School children will be attending on this day. Selection is based on meeting certain qualifying times (set by district management), and these times were obtained from the Senior Swimming Carnival held late last year.
Congratulations to: Bronte, Carla, Emily, Rose, Georgia, Zeke, Harley and Kira. Thank you to all parents who have made themselves available to attend these swimming trials – this is very much appreciated. Don’t forget that there will be a $2.00 entry fee for spectators. Please remember also to pack a good meal and plenty of fluids for your children, along with all necessary swimming gear (including a swimming cap – important!) and a change of clothing. There will be a canteen available. Chappy Cam will be supervising the team on the day – please check in with him on arrival.
Best of luck to you all, we hope it is a great competition!
Welcome (back)!
Hello and welcome (back) to all our families, especially those new to the school. A quick introduction for those that are new or have not met me yet, I am the Physical Education (PE) Teacher at our wonderful, yet hilly school, and can be found walking around the school grounds wearing the typical PE outfit, on a Monday and Tuesday. Because I am only at Dayboro for two days a week, I am very lucky to have a sports committee who helps me to organise carnivals, trials, training sessions and gala days. This term is our busiest with lots of district trials happening (see calendar below), before school training for our school cross country carnival, which will be held on Tuesday 24th March and our Year 5 and 6 students will participate in their first Gala Day for the year. For those that have not had their child/ren do Gala Days before, it is one day a term where our Year 5 and 6 students get to go play a sport for a day, with other primary schools in the district. It’s a great day, out of the classroom, where students get to play a team sport in a fun and friendly round robin. If you have any questions regarding Sport or PE throughout the year, please don’t hesitate to ask.
2020 Pine Rivers District Trials
Please find below the 2020 Pine Rivers District School Sport Calendar. The dates provided below, are for students aged 10-12 years old this year and who are wishing to trial for the district team. If your child/children are interested in attending any of the below trials, they MUST know the rules and have exceptional experience in the sport, for instance, have played at club level or somewhere other than just at school. Exemplary behaviour at school is also a prerequisite. Most sports do limit the number of students that each school can send to each trials (normally only 4 students), so if there is a large number of students interested in a sport, such as Soccer, Netball and Rugby League, a lunch time trial will occur at school. Results from our big three school carnivals (Cross Country, Athletics & Swimming), will be used to determine who represents our school in these three sports. If you have any further questions about the selection process or below trials, please contact me via the school office. A copy of the sports and dates below, can also be found on the Student Notices board, just outside the admin block.

If your child competes in a sport, outside of school, that isn’t listed above please come and see me because there may be regional trials for the sport, but no district trials. The reason why a district trials is skipped is because there may not be enough students in the district for a trial, however, there could be enough within the region. Some sports that do this include Aquathlon, Golf, Squash, Softball and girls Cricket.
Netball Trials for District Trials
I have received an overwhelming number of girls interested in going to districts for Netball, however I can only choose four students, and therefore I will need to run a game of Netball during lunch time at school. This will happen next Monday at 1st break on the multi-purpose court, and a reminder will be given at parade.
District Basketball Success for Zach
A big congratulations to Zach S. for being selected into the Pine Rivers District U12 Years Boys Basketball team. This was Zach’s first time trialling for Basketball and was chosen from a field of more than 20 students in the district. This is a huge achievement for Zach and our school. We wish him all the very best with his training and when he competes at the Met North Regional Trials later this term. Well Done Zach!
Cross Country Training
Permission forms has been sent home with those students who showed interest in participating in this year’s Cross Country training program. Starting yesterday, students in years 3-6 are invited to come train for our school Cross Country Carnival (Tuesday 24th March), and District Cross Country Trials (Friday 1st may). Students are to meet the allocated teacher on the handball courts, under the blue shade sails, for an 8:00am start. Training sessions will go for about 30-40 minutes and then students are to go get changed into their school uniform before school starts. If your child/children did not receive a permission form and would like to partake in the program, they can ask for one from their classroom teacher or myself. Students are welcome to join at any time, however the sooner they join, the more prepared they will be for our Cross Country Carnival.
PE Class of the Week
Congratulations to all the students in 4B for receiving the PE trophy and award for week 2. This class are currently learning how to perform long rope skipping in groups and they did a wonderful job cooperating with each other and using the skipping ropes safely. Well done and keep up the great work!

CHAPPY CHATZ – BEDTIME ROUTINE
Pre-kids the bedtime routine holds an illusion of peaceful bonding.
I imagined reading a story to my child by the soft glow of their bedside lamp, then tucking them in with a gentle kiss on their forehead. Retreating to the doorway, I would then watch them snuggle down into the covers, closing their eyes and drifting off into blissful sleep.
HA!! Oh, the folly!!
Any seasoned parent knows the reality is far less whimsical.
Even once you survive the teeth brushing/toileting shenanigans and get them into bed, the struggle has only just begun.
I want water. I spilt water on my pillow. I want a teddy.
Not that teddy, a different teddy! I need an extra blanket.
I’m hot. I need to poop. You didn’t give me a proper kiss.
Teddy needs a kiss too.
Or my personal favourite, when the kids got older…
I just remembered the (insert time-consuming project/costume/activity) I need for tomorrow morning.
The whole palaver drags on for ages and instead of gazing at my children wistfully from their doorways, most bedtimes ended with me raging Enough! GOODNIGHT! and slamming the door.
There are many very valid reasons an infamous book written about the trials of bedtime includes an expletive.
Does this sound familiar?
According to sleep expertKatie Forsythe, even though most parents have some semblance of bedtime routine in place, we need to tighten it up.
She recommends the whole process should only take about 45 minutes to a 1 hour. That includes dinner, bath, books and any other wind down activities you have. I don’t know about you but that’s a tall order in my house!
I can see how streamlining the process would make things easier, but it can be difficult in modern lifestyles where extra-curricular activities and other commitments can mean that dinnertime is not always at a set time. For us, sometimes it was easier to do baths before dinner, sometimes after, and this variability can often lead to mayhem.
One thing I have found that works well is getting the kids to brush their teeth straight after dinner, regardless of how close it is to bedtime. This way when we do get to bedtime it is one less thing for them to drag their feet about! It also stops any last-minute snack requests.
I also try to be prepared for any other demands, especially from the 4-year-old – a drink of water is already at the bedside, favourite teddy is on standby and the room is set up for optimal sleep conditions (blinds closed, night light on, a/c on if necessary).
While, we might not have a bedtime routine as tight as sleep experts would like, these little steps go a long way to making the transition to bed a lot smoother.
Have a Terrific Week
See you around the school,
Chappy Cam
Your Kids want you in the Tuckshop
Have you got a spare Wednesday or Friday from 8.30am-2pm. If you do then your kids would love to rave about how their parents or carer are working in the tuckshop today. The role is easy and you get to meet other parents and carers and basically have a good old chat. Then the doors open and your child will be there with a huge grin on their face waiting to see you at the tuckshop. So why not help out one day and put a huge grin on your child’s face.
