Library and Maker Space News

New Books

We have had some amazing new books delivered to the Library already this year.  Quite a few of the new books have a dog as one of the main characters.  “My Friend Fred” is about the friendship between a very cheeky dachshund and his mystery friend who is revealed at the end of the story.  Younger students have enjoyed this story and have been pleasantly surprised by the ending. We have also had some new non-fiction books delivered with information about the early days of English settlement in Australia.

Borrowing

It has been fantastic to see so many enthusiastic borrowers come to the Library already this year!  When children borrow books we are hoping to foster a love of reading by helping children to select a book they will enjoy and not find overly challenging to read.  During class visits we have been discussing the “just right” strategy for students to use when selecting books.  This strategy empowers students to select books that will allow them to read with independence, but still provide them with an opportunity to improve their reading.

Students who are in need of a Library bag can come to the Library to take one of the donated shopping bags that we have available to use as a Library bag, or they can make their own bag during lunch break in the Maker space.  Remember that students do not have to wait until their class borrowing day to exchange books.

Maker Space

We have had a busy start to the year in the maker space.  We have had children coming along to make items of their own creation as well as completing some of the challenges that have been set up. The Lego maze construction was a popular choice.

Also, it is Queensland School Library Week.  This is a snapshot from Education Queensland's Facebook Page
