Welcome back!
Welcome back to all of our Dayboro State School community for 2024. It has been wonderful welcoming back the students and seeing them settle into their classrooms and explore their new play areas and activities. It is great to see so many smiling faces ready to learn! A very special welcome also to all of our 41 new preppies and their families, as well as to all of our other new students across the school.
Our 2024 Dayboro State School Explicit Improvement Agenda is:
A whole school and community approach; striving for excellence and equity in curriculum and engagement ensuring high expectations for all.
We look forward to working with our community this year to ensure success for our students.
Our Dayboro SS staff worked very hard last week to ensure that the learning environments were thoughtfully prepared. The teachers collaborated to plan the teaching and learning to meet the needs of each student, providing quality and engaging learning. Our first two days have been extremely smooth with our students being introduced to the learning routines and their new units of work. We look forward to great learning as the term progresses.

Transitioning to a new year level can be an exciting but sometimes daunting experience. As your child settles in, there may be some adjustments required. The teachers at Dayboro SS are working hard to ensure that you are fully informed about the organisational structures within their classrooms. They will have also shared with you information about the year level Curriculum Overview. Talking to your child about their learning and their new class will assist them to transition. Please do not hesitate to ask your child’s teacher if you are unsure of procedures, we are happy to help out.
On Thursday 8 February, we will hold our Class Information Sessions for parents, in the afternoon between 3:10-5:45pm to share more about individual class structures and procedures. Our feedback from last year showed that parents valued having all of the information sessions on one afternoon/evening making it easier for parents and to help our school community to meet each other. On the afternoon, school staff will be in the library to look after any school aged children while parents attend their session (year 5 and 6 students are welcome to attend their session with their parents). A timetable will be distributed shortly via email. While we have tried very hard to separate year levels for families, I am aware that there are a couple of clashes. If a clash occurs, please consider sending a parent to each of the sessions. Teachers will provide follow up information for parents who are unable to attend.
The P&C will host a Community Sausage Sizzle for our Prep families from 5pm. Please consider staying for a sausage and a chat.

Our Parent Calendar outlines our special events for Term 1. We look forward to a busy and productive term with a number of special school events in the new few weeks, including:
- Class Information Sessions for Parents after school Thursday 8 February
- School Leaders Investiture Monday 5 February
Our fabulous P&C will also run a few community events this term:
- Family Fun Day at the Dayboro Pool Sunday 4 February
- Welcome BBQ for Preps after the Class information Sessions 5pm Thursday 8 February
Of course, our vision here at Dayboro SS continues to be - To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment. I look forward to being a partner with you in our child’s learning journey!
Welcome to our new staff!
We have welcomed a couple of new staff this year:
Thomas Makepeace has joined us as one of our Year 5 teachers.
”Hello good people of Dayboro, I'm Tom Makepeace, eager to bring my enthusiasm and dedication to this esteemed school. Having taught year 6 at Burpengary Meadows State School in 2023, I'm passionate about fostering growth in students. I've heard wonderful things about the people and the school's community, and I look forward to contributing to another fantastic year with this team.”
We also have a new Chappy, Hannah Drage.
“Hi, I am Chappy Hannah! I am very much looking forward to being a part of Dayboro State School community.
A little bit about me… I am a mum of four, and have always worked or volunteered with children, with a background in Early Childhood Education and Care. I am passionate about social and emotional wellbeing and holistic healthy living, giving children a voice and a sense of belonging and love to encourage a positive culture in the community that I am involved in. I love to be creative, play or listen to music, be naturally active daily, spend time outdoors (from the beach to the mountains), cheer on my favourite (or own children's) sports team and like to notice the little things in the world around me that bring wonder and joy. I can’t wait to meet you all individually as the people who also champion on our children.”
Have a great week!
Gabrielle
Dear Families and Friends
A big welcome back to all our returning and new families to Dayboro school this year. 2024 is already off to an excellent start with our “Meet and Greet” session
Welcome also to our new Student Leaders for 2024. We wish them all the best for the year ahead and their leadership journey.
Finally, a reminder that our School Vision is “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.” Our staff and students are committed to this vision and we are looking forward to a great year of learning and growth for all our students!
In 2024 we also continue to embrace our values of
“Be respectful, be responsible, be positive, be tolerant, be proud and be kind.”
Dayboro State School Behaviour Expectations (School-Wide)
Below are our whole school expectations. Our staff work very hard to appreciate and acknowledge positive behaviours in our school and these expectations are what we look for! Parents too can help support our staff by reading these through with your children and also positively acknowledging their choices.
INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC NEWS
Instrumental Music Lessons will now be on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Look out for more information in the coming weeks. Mr Yates will email details to parents shortly.
It is very hot so please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during
play times and PE lessons.
The rule is “No Hat, no Play!”
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.
SWIMMING – Years 2 and 4.
Year 2 and 4 will be swimming in first term again this year. We changed this last year. This decision was made because of the move of NAPLAN to Term 1 in the year now. This directly affects the Year 3’s and as there are 5 weeks of swimming lessons it was decided it would be best to move them to the end of the year so as not to interrupt their learning. Classes 2B, 2D, 4A, 4B will be swimming from Week 4 until Week 8. They will swim every Thursday and Friday for a 1/2hr lesson for 5 weeks. Notes and invoices will be sent home next week. The cost will be approx.. $100. These lessons are an important part of our curriculum and all students are expected to attend.
The Year 2’s in 2/3C will swim at the end of the year with their class.
A big thank you to our hard- working P&C for providing the tissues and tea at our welcome get together on Monday after school drop off. It was lovely to see so many parents enjoy meeting others and chatting about the first morning of school.
Thank you Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
FIRST DAY PHOTOS FOR OUR PREP-Year 2 Classes!!
Welcome back to school for another year everyone and a VERY special welcome to our brand new families and little learners who are joining their formal learning journey for the very first time.
The beginning of the year is an exciting one for our learning as we look down the barrel of a big year full of learning opportunities and potential.
Over the next two weeks your children will be finding out what they will be learning about over the term as teachers build the contexts for their different units of teaching and learning. This is an exciting time for our learners but it can also be overwhelming. When school starts back parents are keen to hear all about what their child has been doing and what they have been learning about and at times disappointed if their child cannot share much information with them.
At the beginning of the school year, I suggest parents keep their questions simple but targeted. So instead of saying ‘What did you do today at school?’, perhaps narrow that down to ‘what writing did you do today?’ or ‘what was your favourite thing you read today?’ or ‘what was the favourite part of your maths lesson today?’.
Your child may tell you that they are doing lots of ‘tests’ over the next two weeks. Teachers will be collecting some diagnostic information at the start of the year in order to:
- help them understand the support your child may need in their learning and
- choose the most appropriate class groups they can place your child in to target their learning needs from the beginning of the year.
At Dayboro, we like to call these diagnostic tests ‘Show Me’s’ with our learners to reassure them that what we are doing is just showing the teacher what they already know to help the teacher know what next to teach them.At Dayboro we also love to discuss and plan our learning goals with our students. It gives them small and continuous targets for their learning throughout the term.As the term goes on your child will have some learning goals so this is another thing you could ask them about their learning down the track. One way you can support your child around the area of goal setting is by talking about and helping set other goals your child might have this year in other areas of their life such as sports.
Something very important to remember at the beginning of the year when you and your child are getting to know their new teacher is to keep communication open. If you or your child are worried about anything open up those lines of communication straight away so issues can be resolved quickly. Most of the time, there is no need to worry anyway.
I look forward to sharing information with you about the wonderful teaching and learning at Dayboro State School over this year.
Dee Mathiesen
Head of Curriculum
On behalf of the P&C, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our Dayboro State School families. Whether you are returning or new to our school community, it can be both exciting and a little overwhelming for everyone. The P&C is made up of a group of fellow parents and we will endeavour to work with the school to help you all during this time of transitioning back in to school routines.
Who are we?
For those who are new to our school community, the P&C is a dedicated group made up of parents, staff and community members who volunteer their time to enhance the school experience for every student. Throughout the year, we arrange and host a variety of events, including social, learning and fundraising activities, all aimed at benefiting our students. We also operate two key services within the school, the Uniform Shop and Tuckshop.
Last year was the first year in some time where we have had a full committee. If you see any of us around the school, please feel free to say hi! We look forward to getting to know you all throughout the year.

School 24
If you are a Prep parent or new to the school, you will need to register for School24.
This is where you will be able to place uniform orders, tuckshop orders and volunteer for upcoming events at the school.
I have attached a How To Register guide for School24 which gives you a step by step guide for registering. If you have any troubles, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the school office or a P&C member.
The Dayboro Tuckerbox (Open Wednesdays and Fridays)
Our Tuckshop operates on a Wednesday and Friday for both 1st and 2nd break and is run by our Tuckshop Covenor, Alison Hibberd. We greatly rely on our parent and community volunteers to work alongside Alison in the tuckshop. Don’t worry, you don’t need any prior experience, we will teach you everything you need to know. Jump on to the School24 volunteer roster and see if there are any dates that you may be able to assist. Even one shift per term would be amazing!
The tuckshop will be open for orders from Week 2. You can order your tuckshop directly through School24, or alternatively you can drop off your paper bag with a hand written order and money to the tuckshop on Wednesday and/or Friday morning.
Prep students will have their orders delivered to the Prep classrooms, all other students will have a class representative collect the class orders to be distributed.
Uniform Shop (Open Thursdays 8.30am-9.00am)
Uniforms can either be ordered online through School24, or purchased in person on a Thursday morning.
Any online orders that have been placed during the week will be packed every Thursday morning and taken to the School office. You will receive an email when your order has been packed and ready to be collected.
Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
We have a couple of events and tuckshop days coming up and would love some support from our parents. If you can assist with any of these days, please register your name on School24, we would love to see you there.
- Prep Welcome BBQ: To welcome our new Prep parents to our community, we will be hosting a BBQ in the prep area. If you could spare some time to jump behind the BBQ we would be forever grateful.
- Family Fun Day @ The Dayboro Pool: On Sunday, 4th February we will be hosting a Family Fun Day to raise money for the school swimming program. We have set up 2 x 2.5 hr shifts and would love as much support as possible to ensure a fun day for all. If you would be happy to supervise some lawn games or sizzle a sausage, please register on School24.
- Tuckshop (Wednesday, 31st January): We are still looking for 1 x more volunteer to make some yummy toasted sandwiches.
- Tuckshop (Friday, 2nd February): We are still looking for 2 x more volunteers to work alongside Alison.
Next Meeting: Monday, 12th February 2024
AGM: Monday, 11th March 2024
Our P&C meet on the second Monday of every month, both in person and online. It is a great opportunity to get to know Mrs Douglas and Mrs Ryan, along with other parents and community members who are all committed to the continued improvement of our school.
If you would like to come along, please contact Johanna at secretary@dayboropandc.org.au. We would love to see you there.
Kind regards,
Rhiannon Fealy
P&C President
Welcome back!
Welcome back for the 2024 school year. I hope everyone had an enjoyable break and even managed squeeze in some reading!
Students who completed the Summer Reading Club reading challenge are reminded to bring their challenge cards along to receive their prize. A very big congratulations to the students who have already brought their completed challenges to the Library.
World Read Aloud Day
Find a book and curl up with a friend, or a pet, and spend some time reading aloud on the 7th of February.
We would like to invite all students to bring along a photo of themselves reading aloud to make a display in the Library. We love to see who students read to (family members, pets, etc)! ?
Please consider contributing to our display over the next two weeks.
Borrowing
Classes will begin visiting the Library to borrow books this week. Students may borrow books during their class visiting time and during breaks. All loans are set for a period of 2 weeks; parents will receive an automatically generated email advising when student loans are overdue. All students are reminded that they must have a Library bag when borrowing books. Students who do not have a Library bag of their own may come along to the Maker Space and make one using the materials we have available.
Book Fair
Our annual school Book Fair will take place in Term 1 this year. In addition to promoting literacy and a love of reading, book fairs also provide a fun opportunity for children to see, touch and connect with books they want to read. An added benefit for the school is that each purchase from Book Fair earns rewards for the school Library that can be used to purchase new reading books for our students. Keep an eye out for information about Book Fair later in the term.
Maker Space
Maker Space activities will be available for students once again this year. Students have the option of completing activities of their own choice, or they can choose work on set challenges and activities if they wish. It is always wonderful to see students helping one another with various activities in the Maker Space as they learn new skills and explore their interests.
We would like to ask for some household recyclables to be donated for students to use in the Maker Space, in particular we are asking for cardboard boxes (e.g. cereal boxes, muesli bar boxes etc). Please do not send egg cartons along, we have a large supply at school already as we must use new cartons due to possible contamination risks for students with an egg allergy.
Have a great week,
Mrs Wilkinson.
Celebrations Paver Fundraiser
We are making a beautiful paved area outside the hall and you can be a part of it too. Pavers with family names, dates and/or pictures can be ordered and will be set out for our community to view our past and current families and for future generations to see.
Below are order forms where you can choose how you would like to be recorded in the history of Dayboro State School. There are a few options available.
All order for Pavers must be received and paid for by 22 March 2024.
Please contact Dayboro State School Admin on 3425 6111 if you need any assistance.
Thanks for your order!
Next meeting for the 150th Celebrations is at 3:30pm on Monday 12 February. If you have anything to contribute or would like to offer assistance with the days activities, please come along and share with us.
Welcome back to a new year. It is a very busy start to the year in PE and District sports as usual.
For PE lessons
Students need the following for each PE lesson:
- broad brimmed school hat so that they can participate fully.
- Water bottle. This way they can drink whenever they need to without disrupting the class and there is only a single fountain on the oval.
- Shorts/skorts suitable for physical activity. Wearing a formal dress on Monday is OK, just ensure that bike shorts are worn underneath.
Swimming Carnivals:
The Pine Rivers District Swimming Carnival will be held on Wednesday 14th February at Lawnton Pool. Selected students will be informed by Mrs. Cassell once the district paperwork has arrived.
Cross-country change to program:
This year the junior and senior cross-country carnivals will be separated, bringing them in line with athletics and swimming. The year 3-6 students will continue to train during term 1 and race at the end of term, Tuesday 26th March, to ensure we are prepared for the district carnival in term 2. The Prep-Year 2 students will now train during term 2, when the weather is cooler, culminating in a carnival on Monday 20th May.
Cross-country training:
Before and after school training will be available for 10-12 year old students who wish to train for our School Cross Country Carnival and District Cross Country Trials. More information will follow during the term.
District Sports Trials:
The Pine Rivers District run trials through the year as a development pathway for 10-12year old students. At the trials, students will compete against other students from the district for a place in the Pine Rivers District Team. If selected for this team they will then be expected to attend district training and then compete against other districts. Some children may then be selected for the Regional team and so on. These trials are not a ‘give it a go’ session but rather a pathway to state and international level. For your child to be considered to trial, they need to be playing that sport in a club at the highest level available. Some less common sports do not hold district trials. Instead, selected students trial out for the regional team directly.
This year I have placed Expression of Interest forms for ALL SPORTS on the sports noticeboard. Students who have the skills to qualify for a district team need to write their name on the form so that I know who to talk to when the trials approach. Alternatively, parents can email me on cxmar5@eq.edu.au. If students or parents do not inform me of their interest and skill level I will not be able to pass on the required information.
The Pine Rivers District have introduced a new QR code system for all sports trials. The QR codes will be sent by myself to those students who are selected to attend the trial. Families will register through the code and the trial package, which is now paperless, will be sent directly to students / families.
Attached is a list of all the District Sports dates and QR scan code closing dates. However, these dates are subject to frequent changes so please keep an eye on the newsletter and encourage your children to listen in parade for updated information. Again, if your child has their name on the Expression of Interest form, I will be able to make sure that the relevant information gets to the correct people. Many of these sports are run very early this term with AFL, Baseball, Touch and Volleyball at the end of January or early February.
