Dear Parents and Carers
Remembrance Day
It was wonderful for us to join with the Dayboro War Memorial Society on Saturday for the Remembrance Day service at the park. It was an honour for our captains to be invited to share The Ode and a student presentation. It was wonderful to see several of our DSS students attending with their families, learning about what a privilege we now have in Australia thanks to those people who have died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
Our Year 5’s represented their understanding through chalk drawings.
Lest we forget!

School Opinion Survey
Recently, we received our School Opinion Survey results and we are celebrating our successes. Thank you to the parents, students and staff who completed the survey to provide feedback to help us improve. Our staff will be unpacking the feedback gathered by the survey to plan for areas we can strengthen or enhance for our staff, students and community.
Our Dayboro State School positive highlights are:
‘Away for the day’ – mobile phones and wearable devices
On 6 July 2023, Minister Grace announced that all state school students will be required to keep their mobile phones ‘away for the day’ from the beginning of Term 1 2024. This announcement also extends to wearable devices like smartwatches, which can be worn, but must have notifications switched off, so that phone calls, messages and other notifications cannot be sent or received during school hours.
This will bring consistency across the nation, with all other states and territories agreeing to consistent restrictions on the use of mobile phones in government schools from the start of the school year.
The adoption of this state-wide approach will support schools to maintain a strong focus on educational achievement, and student wellbeing and engagement, by:
- providing optimal learning and teaching environments, free from the distractions caused by personal use of mobile phones and wearable devices
- supporting schools to create safe and supportive learning environments that prioritise student engagement and wellbeing
- encouraging increased face-to-face social interactions between students
- promoting the health and wellbeing of students by providing opportunities for social interaction and physical activity during break times
- reducing the potential for students to be exposed to the negative impacts of the digital world resulting from unsafe or inappropriate use of technology, such as cyberbullying, accessing harmful content or breaches of personal privacy.
If you have any questions about student use of mobile phones and wearable devices during school hours, please contact gdoug7@eq.edu.au.
Five Day School Week
It has been in the news about our reducing the school week to four days. While some secondary schools already have rearranged their school hours to suit their students and their community, our Department of Education has confirmed that Queensland State Schools remain operational five days per week.I just wanted to let you know that primary schools including Dayboro State School will not be reducing days per week in 2024. We are mindful that we need to meet Prep - Year 6 curriculum delivery requirements, meet the needs of all students and staff, to not disadvantage any group of students, and ensure the safety, wellbeing and engagement of all students across the 5-day week.
A Dayboro Learner Qualities!
Student Success!
Next week, one of our talented students will be participating in the 10-12 year olds’ National Competition for Track and Field held in Tasmania this year. Thank you to our P&C for donating $100 to support Emily’s family in getting her there.
We will be cheering from Queensland. Go Emily!!!
Planning for 2024
We are currently trying to plan effectively for class lists, new enrolments, facilities, resources and staffing for the 2024 school year. Please ensure that you contact our school administration team if your child/ren are not returning to Dayboro SS in 2024. Thank you for your support.
Have a great week!
Gabrielle
Dear Families and Friends
TRANSITIONS
At this busy time of year, we can often forget that for many of our students and families it is a time of anticipation and sometimes anxiety about preparing for next year. The Yr. 6 students will be leaving for high school and for many, saying goodbye to old friends and teachers and getting ready for completely different routines can be a daunting experience. We are going to miss our Year 6 cohort but we know they are ready for the next part of their education journey. They are well- prepared and we will continue to support them with their transition.
We try to help this transition by connecting with our local high schools throughout the year and the students begin visiting and getting to know the staff. They also send Yr 7 coordinators to our school to get to know the students and their needs better. We would welcome any feedback from parents with suggestions on how we could improve this process for families, especially first- time high school families.
The following flyer was posted on our Facebook page regarding interviews held this earlier this week. If you missed it please contact the High School directly.
Preparing for Prep is also a big step for families of children starting Prep in 2024. Establishing routines and providing positive experiences are important ways of supporting your child.
Helping children enjoy a positive start to school
There are lots of ways you can help your child enjoy a positive start to school.
Some simple tips include:
- be ready to support your child
- listen to your child’s thoughts about starting school
- make time to talk, read, play and relax with your child
- share your positive feelings about school
- practise new routines
- encourage your child to keep trying when something is hard
- assist your child to know how to get help
- meet new children and families before the first day
- celebrate starting
Your child may raise questions or wish to share their thoughts about what school might be like. Talking with them about these feelings is a good way to help them, and you, prepare for a positive transition to school.
Your child’s language skills develop through the everyday conversations you have with them. At school we build on this language and the children’s thinking skills by listening, watching and being responsive in our teaching.
For more information visit:
Now that the days are starting to get warmer please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during play times and PE lessons. The rule is “No Hat, no Play!” Please remember to name your child’s hat as it makes it much easier to return lost hats to their owners.
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.
Thank you to our Yr 6 teachers, Ms Foord and Mrs Cassell as well as Chappy Rach and Kev Enchelmaier for attending Yr 6 Camp last week. What a fabulous camp and what fabulous students. Thank you everyone involved.

Lost Property
Year 6 Parents
A sleeping bag was left at the front of the school after camp last week. It looks brand new, is Black and Blue, has the brand labels (Wanderer) still attached but No name that I can see. No one has come to claim it yet. Anyone missing a sleeping bag? Come to the office.
Welcome 2024 Prep Parents
We would like to extend a warm welcome to the Prep 2024 parents who are now receiving our newsletters. We appreciate that there is a lot to take in during this exciting time but please know, that we are here to help.
I have included some (hopefully) helpful guides to get you started.
- Register for School 24. Through this platform you can order your uniforms, tuckshop, and access the volunteer register.
- Stop by the Uniform Shop on Thursdays 8.30-9.30am if you need any help with sizing
- Follow us on Social Media for regular updates
- Dayboro State School P&C Association
- Dayboro State School
- Dayboro School Parents Chat Page (DSS Parents ONLY)
- Become a member of the P&C, it really is a fantastic way to stay across everything that is happening in our school, to have a say and to meet other parents. Don’t worry, signing up does not mean that you are expected to be at every meeting or event.
A Successful Leap Forward with Grants and Upgrades
We are thrilled to announce that Elise secured a grant from the 2023 Community Bank Samford & Pine Rivers Grants Program that will enable us to replace the tuckshop's aging oven.
The new oven will not only enhance efficiency in the tuckshop but also open up opportunities to provide more fresh, wholesome food to our students and Dayboro State School team.
Equipment such as this does not come cheap and we are so grateful to Elise for securing this $9680.00 grant, and to Katherine for sourcing numerous quotes and meeting with suppliers to determine what would work best in our Dayboro Tuckerbox.
What a wonderful way to end the year!
Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities
As we move into the final weeks of the school year, we have several tuckshop days, working bees and events that are in need of your valuable volunteer support. Please consider joining us for the following activities:

- Oval Shed Working Bee (8.30am Sunday, 19th November): Our P&C shed on the oval is in need of a clean up after the colour run, we would love some help to clean down some equipment and to organise remaining stock.
- Tuckshop (Wednesday, 29th November): Can you help make some toasted sandwiches? We are still looking for 2 x volunteers.
- Christmas Disco (Friday, 1st December): Join us for an evening of disco lights and dancing. We would love some help to either set up from 2-3pm, or on the night. Please have a look at the different options on the School24 volunteer register.

Library Borrowing
We are quickly approaching the end of the 2023 school year and Week 7 will be the final week for student borrowing. All Library books will need to be returned to the Library by the 1st of December. Some students have indicated that they are unable to find books they currently have on loan – we suggest looking for misplaced books on book cases at home (or in classrooms), in toy boxes, under beds, or in the family car. Books can turn up in some very surprising places. ?
Notes for missing books will be sent home in Week 9.
Summer Reading Club 2023
The Summer Reading Club is set to begin on the 1st of December! The Summer Reading Club is an initiative promoted through the Moreton Bay Regional Libraries. The goal of this program is to keep children reading and engaged with stories throughout the Summer holiday break. More information can be found on the Moreton Bay Regional Libraries website. There are a range of prizes on offer and parents can join in the reading fun too!
We are also offering Summer Reading Club challenge sheets at school. Challenge sheets are available in the Library for students who are interested in participating. Students who complete all of the reading challenges and return their signed challenge form in the new year will receive a prize.
Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson.
Book Club
Book Club for Term 4 will be issue to students in the coming days. Families are also able to view the latest issue of Book Club on line. Orders for this issue of Book Club will close on Thursday the 31st of August (Week 8).
It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to their class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/loop or by using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Alternatively, order forms with payment can be handed in at the school office. All orders placed through Book Club help to earn free reading books for the school library.
