Junior Athletics Carnival – what a blast!
It was wonderful to see the participation and enthusiasm of our early year’s students at our Junior Athletics Carnival on Friday. They ran, they jumped, they threw, they worked as a team in ball games and cheered each other on as they participated! In the junior years, we feel it is important to encourage our students to just have a go without the pressure of competition so thank you to our amazing community for turning out to cheer these little ones on!
We were also excited to have a visit from Barefoot Kindy and Dayboro Community Kindy, helping our younger learners see what we do here at DSS, encouraging participation. It was fun to see our Dayboro Little Learners playgroup also participate.
Of course, these events would not be possible without a huge amount of organisation and setting up. A huge thanks to Mr D for his expert organisation and to George for set up and maintenance of this, our outdoor learning space. Thanks to all of our staff who go above and beyond to prepare and support our students to be their best.

Dayboro Digital Learners for the Future!
Over the past 12 months, our Dayboro Digital Learning Team, have been working on a proposal to introduce a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for our students. After consulting with experts in the field, several other schools with established digital learning programs, and our P&C, we have decided to commence a roll out in Year 4 in 2024, allowing students to bring their own iPad to school to use as a tool for learning. Later this term, our current Year 3 parents will be invited to an information session outlining the optional Dayboro Digital Learners for the Future program. After this initial information session, we will host a series of drop in and chat afternoons for parents to engage with our staff, asking questions, and learning more about the program. We look forward to support our students in this engaging opportunity to enrich their learning.

A reminder that next week we have our Show Holiday on the Monday 14 August and are here at school on Wednesday 16 August. Our next P&C meeting is

A Dayboro Learner
Our Dayboro students are really embracing our qualities of A Dayboro Learner and have recently been practising being Curious and Creative learners like Kev the Kookaburra. Look at how our students have been demonstrating curious and creative learning here in the past two weeks….
We will continue to prioritise the teaching of these qualities and so introduced Karly the Kangaroo who is a Collaborator. We will be teaching students these qualities as they engage in their learning this fortnight and can’t wait to celebrate at parade next Monday!
Why don’t you ask your learner about how they are engaging in these different qualities in their learning?
School Opinion Survey
Our department’s annual School Opinion Survey has now opened. Parents will receive an email with their log on details. I would encourage you to fill this survey in about our wonderful school.
Who is surveyed? Respondents include:
- Parents/Caregivers—every family in the school with a child enrolled in Kindy to Year 12.
- Students—all students from Years 5, 6, 8 and 11 will be invited to participate in survey. However, in some smaller schools, students in Years 4, 7, 9 or 10 may also be invited to participate.
- Staff—all principals, teaching and non-teaching school staff employed during the survey period. This survey includes permanent, temporary, casual, part-time and full-time staff and excludes staff on leave during the survey period.
We really appreciate your feedback to assist in planning improvement strategies.

Dear Families and Friends
TRANSITIONS – HIGH SCHOOL
Last newsletter we talked about Prep transitions. This newsletter is flagging another important area for transitions – moving to high school. Do you have a student currently in Yr. 6? Have you enrolled your student in high school for 2024?
You may not be aware but In Term 4, we start collaborating with the teachers from our local high schools. We meet up and discuss students’ needs for high school and update them with students’ progress and general trends in learning areas of strengths and need we are seeing in our students. Last year we met with all our local high school and primary schools representatives and we discussed important issues around ensuring successful transitions for our Yr. 6 students. We discussed the importance of regular attendance and the links to engaged, successful learners. Students who attend regularly in primary school tend to have more successful starts in high school. As we say in primary school “Every day counts!!” and this is certainly true for high school as well. At this meeting, we also recognised how important it is to tailor support and interventions for families who may have significant barriers to access high schools such as distance and financial difficulties.
Students who are first in their family to attend high school may also need a more considered transition as this will be the whole family’s first experience of high school. If you or your Yr 6 student would like more information about high school and next steps, please reach out to our Yr 6 Transition Team consisting of the Yr. 6 teachers, our HOC and myself and we would be happy to support you in any way we can.
LEARNING P-2 ENGLISH -WRITING GOALS
PREP
This term Preps have been learning how to recognise and create rhymes. This week they have been making up their own rhyming pairs and adding them to an existing rhyme. By the end of this unit they will be writing their own rhymes and reciting them. Amazing!!

YEAR 1
The focus for Yr. 1 in English this term has been retelling a cultural story. Why? Because retelling stories from our past how to keep cultures, memories and important events alive. The Yr. 1’s have been learning how to write interesting retells about a variety of cultural stories such as How the Birds Got their colours (Dreaming story), The Two Bullies (A legend from Japan) and Handa's Surprise (Africa).
Right now, they are learning to retell a story in a logical sequence with main ideas and characters to add interest. They have also created a Cultural Word Wall to reflect and help describe the setting of each story. Ask your Yr. 1 student what their writing goal is.

YEAR 2
Year 2 are learning how to create and present entertaining multimodal procedures. Over the last 2 weeks, they have been creating procedures for a specific purpose, to make delicious or disgusting food. They have chosen specific describing words and adverbs to help add interest and to fit the purpose.

SCIENCE NEWS
Year 2 are learning about living things and what they need to survive. They have been hatching silk worms and growing bean seeds. They will be setting up favourable and non-favourable conditions for their plants to grow in our new garden beds. Learning through experimentation and inquiry enhances our students’ understanding of the natural world and allows them to ask the question - WHY? One of the most powerful words to promote learning and understanding.

IMPORTANT PBL NEWS!
Our Awards are: Be Kind, Be positive, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Proud and Be Tolerant. The Principal’s Award is also given out each week.
Every week we also have 4 students who receive GOTCHA awards. These students are spotted by other teachers in the playgrounds and classrooms and rewarded for doing the right thing with a GOTCHA award. They then go into the draw box where very week 4 students names are pulled out of the box. The winners receive a prize from the Prize Box and an ice block voucher.

Mrs Wilkinson
Hi everyone,
As always I hope you are going amazing. I know that life can be full on and everyone is faced with tough things at one point or another, so I hope that if that is you, that you make sure you look after yourself. Here’s what’s happening this fortnight in Chappy world:
Rock and Water Program
The past 2 weeks our Year 3 groups have been learning how to stand strong using grounding, centring, focusing and taking a low breath. These are the self-regulation tools that are at the heart of our Rock and Water unit. We learn these through games – for example, the ‘Monkey Grip’ game, where we hold a partner by the arm, lean back and let go on the count of 3. If our body is calm and we are standing strong, we won’t stumble backwards. The same can be said for the choices we make. If we have taken the time to help our body (and our nervous system) be calm, we will make wiser choices about our actions.
From there, we have discussed what it means to be a strong person, both physically and internally. Can I be a good rock? i.e Can I say no to peer pressure? Can I stand up for myself? We have also discussed how it is good to be like water in relationships – to offer friendship, communication, solidarity and peace. Students have also started setting their Rock and Water goals for this term. This might look like: “I want to remember to take a breath when I am angry”. We have really enjoyed using the new outdoor classroom to do this!
9 square-in-the-air
The chaplaincy committee was able to purchase the game “9 Square” for our school. We have been able to use this at lunch clubs, SUPA club and will use it in the future for special events like school camp. Thanks so much to the donors who contributed towards this:
Dayboro Sheriff’s Fund
KnOT Occupational Therapy
Beth Nowlan
Dayboro Sherriff’s Fund Trivia Night 2023
This year the chaplaincy committee is working alongside the DSF to put on the annual trivia night in Dayboro. They have very graciously offered for proceeds to go to supporting chaplaincy at DSS, as well as to the Endeavour Foundation. Tables are on sale NOW – get in quick! (at the time of writing this, there are 7 already gone). See flyer below.
