Good Afternoon
Dayboro State school 2023 Excellence in Pedagogy and Equity through Differentiation
Last fortnight in the newsletter and also during our P&C meeting, I discussed with parents our Dayboro State School Explicit Improvement Agenda (EIA) for 2023 which we believe supports all of our students to be engaged and successful:
This fortnight, we have been working hard towards our EIA. In year 4, we have seen excellence in pedagogy, using student voice with careful teaching of success criteria in writing:
- students working in groups to analyse writing samples to see which success criteria they already have in the writing and which success criteria could be used by the student to bump up their work! How powerful when student has a voice.

Our staff have also been engaged in professional learning to address our Equity through Differentiation:
- We contracted an educator from Supporting People Experiencing Learning Differences (SPELD) to work with our teachers and teacher aides about supporting students experiencing reading and spelling difficulties. This targeted session, explaining the theory as well as modelling many practical applications of the strategies, allowed our staff to reflect and plan towards inclusion through differentiation for students.
Parent partnerships
We love building parent partnerships and these partnerships really support teachers to understand how to best support your child. It was wonderful to see the parent engagement in our recent Class Information Sessions. At the end of this term, we will offer individual parent teacher conferences to allow you to discuss the progress of your child. If you need to contact your child’s teacher prior to the information session, please consider the following ways of engaging with your child’s teacher:
- Email communication – a quick email to let the teacher know of any changes for your child or questions about their learning or to request a phone call follow up. Please be mindful that teachers are not always able to check their emails throughout the day, as they are engaged with your children.
- Making an appointment to meet – teachers are of course busy professionals and as such have meetings and work flow planned before and after school. It is helpful for them to be able to schedule the time to meet to give you their full attention. It can be stressful if parents just pop up for a morning conversation while the teacher is trying to settle their class or prepare for the day. Please contact to make a time to meet if necessary to discuss your child.
There may be times in the year when you may feel like school for you or your child is not going according to plan. At these times, I really encourage you to contact your child’s teacher as they have an understanding of how your child is going at school, at playtimes and in school-based activities and are happy to work with you to work towards solutions. Karen Ryan our DP or myself are also great to contact to discuss any problems. A reminder that we can’t assist if we don’t know there may be an issue and communications other than the face to face or emails (like FaceBook or chatting around the school yard) can be counterproductive when trying to find solutions.
Thank you for helping to look after our wonderful teachers. The teachers at Dayboro SS really want to connect with you in a mutually suitable way to ensure our students are happy, healthy and learning.

Dear Families and Friends
Being on time and ready to learn.
At the start of every year and throughout the year, students are learning how important it is to be on time and ready to learn. Students are reminded that being organised is the key to getting the most out of their learning so time is not wasted and tasks can be completed properly.
One way to do this is for children to make sure their desks are tidy and their equipment is ready to use for the day.
Arriving at school on time also ensures a good start to the day and gives the children time to get their belongings organised and ready.
Being on time and organised is a life-long skill which we should all try to instil in every student. It is something that they can transfer to extra-curricular activities and everyday life.
If you discuss this with your children and try to make being organised and on time a priority in your life, it can help the whole family too.
We would like to see if any parents in our Dayboro school community or outside our school, would be interested in coming along to a playgroup that would be run by and held at Dayboro school. We have already had about 5 families interested in participating. I will be ringing them shortly to discuss days and times. This is an exciting opportunity for parents of younger children, in our community, to meet and have their children engage in high quality play-based learning and socialisation activities provided by a trained facilitator, usually a member of our school staff.
If this is something you would be interested in attending with your younger child, please let us know so we can start to see if we would have enough interest so we can start looking at providing this wonderful opportunity for our Dayboro families.
Call our office 34256111 and please leave your name and phone number so we can start to get an idea of numbers interested. We will then ring you and let you know if we will push ahead and give you more details.

PREP VISION SCREENING IMPORTANT FOR PREPS
Every year we are fortunate to be able to provide free Vision screening for our Prep students. Please read the information below and follow the link to sign up for this free service. The testing is conducted by the School Health Nurse. It takes place at school on a school day.
The Primary School Nurse Health Readiness Program will be screening at your child’s school commencing on Thursday 23rd March 2023. We are a Queensland Government service that offers Free Vision Screening to all children enrolled in Prep. If your child is in Prep and you would like their vision screened, you will need to complete a consent form.
The following video explains the benefits of having your Prep child’s vision screened

PREP AND YEAR 1 Hearing Screening
In the same week as vision testing we are also holding hearing screening for Preps and Year 1’s. A permission note and Hearing Questionnaire have been sent home to all Prep and Year 1 students. The cost is $18 and will be conducted by the UQ Hearing Screening faculty. It is important that students have any hearing and vision issues identified early to help get on top of any problems that may arise from impaired vision or hearing in the early years. The date for Hearing Screening is Wednesday 29th March.
Week 10 Important Dates:
Monday 27th March- Prep Vision Screening – Free
Wednesday 29th March- Prep and Year 1 Hearing Screening -$18
Thank you Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Thank you to everyone who attended the P&C Meeting last Monday. There were some great discussions around some upcoming events, such as the Mother’s Day Stall, Easter Raffle, Dayboro Day and our upcoming AGM. Thank you all for your contribution and I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new faces.
AGM – Monday 13th March 2023
Our AGM is just under 3 weeks away. The P&C must have a minimum of two elected officers to continue operating and at this stage, we haven’t had any formal nominations.
If you are considering getting involved but not sure where to start, or would like to get a better understanding of the roles, let’s chat. We can catch up for a coffee, or gather a group of friends together. Send me an email at president@dayboropandc.org.au, or leave your details with the office and I will give you a call.
Please know that if you are considering putting your hand up for a role on the committee, you won’t be alone. Both our Secretary (Mia) and Treasurer (Jo) have both said they would be more than happy to do a thorough handover and help the incumbents with their transition in to their new roles.
There are lots of exciting ideas floating around about some upcoming events and fantastic fundraising opportunities, but without more help from our families, we simply wont be able to do them. Next year Dayboro State School celebrates 150 years! It is such an exciting time for the school and community, and no better time to get involved.

Library News and Events
Last week we celebrated Queensland School Library Week and Library Lover’s Day. Students who visited the library during breaks last week were able to participate in activities celebrating libraries and a love of books and reading.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to our display with either the name of a book you loved or a quote from a story or poem that meant something to you.
Australian Reading Hour
Australian Reading Hour will be held on Thursday 9th March. We would like to encourage everyone to set aside some time for reading on this day – this could be reading on your own or reading with someone else. For more information visit the Australian Reading Hour website. We’d love to see photos of you joining in!
Borrowing
Students are reminded that they are able to return and borrow books at both breaks every day as well as during their weekly class time. Please remember to bring your library bag – students without a library bag are welcome to come along to the maker space to make their own.
Book Club
Keep an eye out for the first issue of Book Club for 2023 which will be sent home in the coming weeks. Book Club is issued four times per year at Dayboro State School (once per term). This year Scholastic have changed the format of their brochure to be more like a newspaper, this new format is more environmentally friendly to produce.
All books purchased through Book Club earn rewards with Scholastic which are then used to purchase new books for the Library collection. This gives us the opportunity to purchase books that have been requested by students.
Orders and payment for books can be made online via Scholastic’s LOOP ordering system, alternatively, orders with a cash payment can be left at the office in a clearly named envelope.
For more information visit Scholastic’s website for the Parent Guide.
We would also like to thank the families who have generously donated books to the Library over the last few weeks. We truly appreciate your ongoing support.
Maker Space
Maker space continues to be busy during breaks. Last week the cup stacking challenges proved to be a popular lunch time activity. Tallest towers, greatest number of cups in a stack, and constructing set shapes were favourite challenges (although the heart shape proved to be a bit too challenging for some students – until the secret of cardboard supports was revealed). Some students have even expressed an interest in competitive cup stacking!
Have a great week!

Dayboro State School (Mon-Tues)
Hi everyone,
Thank you to everyone who came along to Pancake Day! We raised around $350 towards chaplaincy at Dayboro. We have lots of left over mix and syrup so stay tuned for information on when our next one which will be next term! Speaking of pancakes, last Thursday I got the chance to go along to the Chappy Pancake Breakfast at Bray Park SHS. It was so great to catch up with some of the Year 6’s from last year! They seem to be doing really well in Year 7.
Rock and Water
This term we are focusing on building self-confidence. As you know, this is something we all need in order to choose an appropriate responses to all types of life situations. Standing strong like a rock when it comes to your values and self esteem is important. Feel confident of your best qualities are and using them to compliment the strength of others means you are able to go with the flow, like water. It has been heart-warming to see the students to reflect on the best parts of themselves. We think they are all great in their own unique ways!
SUPA Club
SUPA Club has been going great! We seem to have a bunch of new kids every week. This term we have been hearing about the lives of some of our teachers. I wonder who our next special guest speaker will be? See you in the hall next Friday (3 March) to find out! If you haven’t been before, please get a signed permission slip from me first – you can request this from me.
Moreton Bay Sports Camp 2023
I am helping to direct a sports themed day camp being held in the first week of the school holidays. Check out the flyer below for details on how to come along. We are hoping to offer a shuttle bus service from Lawnton State School to the camp at North Lakes and back.
This fortnight I have felt challenged to take time every day to sit quietly - without my phone or any distractions – just being fully present in the moment. It’s so easy to always be busy – especially in the middle of a school term! I do know though, that if I don’t take that time to be still, I can start to feel extra tense and stressed. I think a lot of us probably feel that way. So maybe you can take the time this week to intentionally be still (even if all you can get is 2 minutes!) and see if it makes a difference. ?
If you have any questions or need support in any way, please feel free contact me at:
rachael.woodrow@suchaplaincy.org.au
Have a great week
