Good Afternoon Parents and Caregivers,
Last week we raised awareness with our students and staff about Queensland’s Mental Health Week, an annual event held from 8-16 October 2022, and the importance of always looking after yourself. This aims to improve community awareness and interest in mental health and wellbeing across the state.
Throughout week 2, we discussed and used wellbeing strategies:
- Mindfulness activities
- Circle time in classrooms where students feel welcomed by their class and teacher.
- Inclusion Teacher Alicia Tavelardis and Chappy Rach launched our Rock and Water program with our initial Year 1-4 group. The students had lots of fun learning what it means to be:
- a Rock: I can stand up for myself, I can make my own choices, I can defend myself, I know which way I have to go
- like Water: offering friendship, communication, solidarity, peace
Students learned how to ground, centre, focus and have a low breath in order to feel calm enough to make decisions about who they need to be in any given situation. They played purposeful games so the students could observe how they performed differently when they were calm vs. when they were not. Students responded well to the lesson and said they loved learning in the outdoor classroom. We look forward to working with the senior group this week!

The theme for the Mental Health Awareness week this year was “Take Time – for Mental Health” and focuses on six simple actions we can take to improve our moods, build resilience, and boost wellbeing. These actions are to take time to:
- Get Healthy
- Keep Learning
- Show Kindness
- Connect
- Take Notice and
- Embrace Nature
As parents and carers, you play an important role in your fostering your child’s healthy mental health. Suggestions for parents are:
- Talk to your child about why looking after their mental health is important
- Browse through the resources on the QMHW website.
Planning for 2023
We are busy planning enrolments, facilities, resources and staffing for the 2023 school year. If you have a child due to start Prep in 2023 and have not yet enrolled, please contact our Administration Officers ASAP.
If you have any matters you would like us to consider for your child’s class placement in 2023, please email me on the Principal email address, Principal@dayboross.eq.edu.au by Thursday 27 October. Please note:
- You may wish to include information about family circumstances that should be considered
- You may like to describe the qualities in a teacher that suit your child
- We do not accept requests for a specific teacher.
A reminder that we usually only have two classes in each year level, so we cannot always accommodate student grouping requests. Our staff work extremely hard to achieve the best outcomes across all class groups and we certainly consider parent information. This is a confidential request.
Please also notify, by email, if your child will not be returning to Dayboro SS in 2023, so that we can ensure our staffing and resources are as accurate as possible.
Thanks for your assistance.

Student Leadership Opportunities
We have started discussing with our Year 5 students the leadership opportunities for 2023. We will also begin to include our Year 4 students in this process. After Parade next week, we will meet with our Year 5 students to discuss the application process for 2023 leadership positions and the timeline for the process.
We keep our Year 4 and 5 parents informed of the process. We look forward to working with these cohorts of students to provide opportunities and also information for electing great school leaders.

Dayboro SS Students’ Success!
We continue to celebrate the successes of our students here at Dayboro. Last week, we had Gemma, Emily and Heidi participate in the Queensland State School Track and Field Championships as part of the Met North Representative team. All of the girls participated extremely well with personal best results recorded. Emily will progress to the National Track and Field competition! Congratulations girls!!

Brodie has also been working hard on his secret skill of rock climbing and recently participated in the QLD youth Rock Climbing State Championships and came first in his age group. Great job Brodie!

Dayboro State School students and our community
How lucky are our students to live in and around the Dayboro community? This week I discussed with the students how they can use our school values when they are out and about interacting with our community, including in the Dayboro local businesses. We want our students to wear their uniform with pride and be mindful of their interactions when out and about, showing how we have friendly, responsible, kind and respectful students.
It would be great to discuss with your child/ren; How does your child interact when they are not with you and maybe just accompanied by friends? Let’s work together to ensure our children have the skills to get on in the world and ensure that everyone is being respected in our community.

Have a great week!
Gabrielle
Dear Families and Friends
World Teachers’ Day
On Friday 28th October we recognise and celebrate the important work our teachers do here at Dayboro State School. We are very fortunate to have a hard working, caring and supportive team of professionals who strive every day to provide a quality education for our students. This year we are also celebrating all our support staff on the same day as we also value the work they do for us and our students. Every day our team at Dayboro are making a difference and we thank all our staff, for your dedication and the positive impact you deliver.

Congratulations to our Instrumental Band students and Mr Yates who received a Bronze Medal at the recent Peninsula Music Festival. They were presented with their certificate and report on Assembly on Monday.
PREP ORIENTATION MORNING
This term we are holding our Prep 2023 Orientation mornings for students so they can visit our school and learn more about our Prep classrooms. We have already had the first visit last week. See photos. The next visit is on Monday 24th October. Our last visit will be on Friday 28th October 9:30-10am. It is such a joy to see next year’s Preps interacting and getting to know our staff and each other.

Now that the days are starting to get warmer please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during play times and PE lessons. The rule is “No Hat, no Play!” Please remember to name your child’s hat as it makes it much easier to return lost hats to their owners.
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.
The biggest thank you to some of our local businesses who supported our school recently. A big shout out to Dayboro Village Meats for supplying the sausages for our Family Dance night last term and to Silverwood Café for kindly donating a fridge/freezer to our Tuckshop.
Thank you also to Ferny Grove High School who visited last Friday and put on an amazing Circus Performance for our Prep- 2 students.

Makerspace
Our Lego robotics club has continued to meet on Monday afternoons after school. We now have two teams of students working industriously to prepare for the upcoming First Lego League competition on the 29th of October at Woombye. The other students in our robotics club are preparing for their own competition to be held here at school. They are using the competition mat from First Lego League 2021 to code their robots to complete as many challenges as possible in two and a half minutes.
Library News
We are very excited to see some new furnishings being delivered to the Library. Over the holiday break we had some new seating delivered. This area is a space for students to read and play games with friends. We are anticipating the arrival of some new shelving in the next few weeks for our Junior Fiction area.
Students visiting the Library for borrowing have had lots of new books to choose from. Last week we showcased new books with a dog theme for all reading levels and this week we have new magic themed books.
Keep an eye out over the next few weeks for information about the annual Summer Reading Club challenge. The aim of the program is to keep children engaged in reading throughout the end of year holiday break.
Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson.
French News
The response to French Day has been very good so far, with most students (years 4-6) returning their permission forms already. Please continue to send them back. They are due Monday, October 24.
Excitement is building as students are talking about their costumes. Some are coming as mimes, others as models and one is even going to dress as the Eiffel Tower.

Madame Shaw
Things are well and truly back rolling at Helping Hands Dayboro. We are enjoying a variety of sports and craft in the afternoons. Mobilo has been a hit with all ages and remains a creative exercise that brings many different creations to the service. Miss Cushla has been sparking creativity in the children of a morning and engaging them in a range of different craft/building experiences. Breaky Bunch is a major part of our mornings and children enjoy eating and chatting to their friends as they arrive. We still have plenty of vacancies in the mornings and afternoons and would love to have your children attend. Loose parts is still a favourite area and has also become a painting studio of an afternoon with children using water to cover different objects in the area.

A reminder to confirm your bookings are correct via the iparent portal. We also have some lost property still in the black bucket outside the service, so please encourage your child/ren to check this regularly (there are drink bottles, jumpers and hats with no names).
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Alternatively, please send the service a text message on the mobile number below. Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no-show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Need a helping hand before or after school?
Enrolling your child/ren is easy and there are no enrolment fees. Visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au , click 'How to enrol’ on the right-hand side of the page, and follow the steps. When this is submitted, we will be in touch as soon as possible to support the finalisation of your enrolment and initial bookings. If you have any issues, please contact Jess at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts team on 1300 612 462.
Hello lovely Dayboro parents, guardians and friends!
It’s great to be back at school for Term 4! I am enjoying seeing all of the jacaranda purple popping up all over town when I go up to the school oval. We are in such a beautiful part of the world. It reminds me of when I first started working here, almost a year ago now. Every day I try to be grateful for the small things – like a flowering tree or the fact that I get to be the chappy at this school. I find it really helps me to put things into perspective and keeps me in a good frame of mind. Gratefulness is something that children can start to develop from a very early age. Something as simple as parents and children sharing 3 things they are grateful for on the drive to school can help to set the whole family up for a good day. The more you do it, the more you will start to find you can find things to be grateful for in your day. If you want to, give it a go (and then maybe even let me know how it goes).
As you will have read in the principals news, Mrs Tavelardis and I started our Rock & Water program last week. We had lots of fun and are excited to introduce it to the senior group this Thursday.
SUPA club re-started last Friday in the hall on a Friday after school. This will be on fortnightly until the end of the year, if you are interested in sending your children along please feel free to contact me at the e-mail address below.
Finally, I am here to support students, staff and parents in the Dayboro State School community. If you have a need, are going through something difficult or simply need someone to talk to, my door is always open. I have lots of resources and support I can offer. Please don’t hesitate to contact me. Have a great fortnight!

Marching Forward
ASD Fun Camps QLD.
Weekends dedicated to kicking goals, social interaction and, most importantly...Fun!
We have had a lot of interest in camps and, naturally, a lot of nervous young people who are looking forward to joining but would love to meet the crew before they do. So a day at Seaworld has been organised. Numbers will be limited so that the group doesn't become overwhelming for new faces.
The day will include pick up and drop off, entry to the park, lunch, a treat and a whole heap of fun!! Please click on the link below to contact us, find more info and to secure your space. Marching Forward - ASD Fun Camps QLD look forward to meeting some new faces and getting to know you all.
If you are interested in your child being involved, please contact Nathalie Cotte, a Dayboro State school mum, for more information.
