Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This Friday we finish our first busy term. Our students are to be congratulated for the ease in which they have settled into learning for this year with routines now well established. Your support, as our partners in learning has set us in good stead for a successful three terms ahead.
I would also like to thank the P&C for the very successful Easter Raffle and to the many families who donated and purchased tickets to make this once again, a great fundraiser for our school. This year, we exceeded the 2018 totals with the number of donations and the amount raised. This year a total of $4369 has been raised which will go towards our major P&C project – air conditioning our school library. Congratulations to all the prize winners!
Also, a big thank you to Kylie Juleff and her team of helpers who ran the very successful canteen at the Senior Sports Day last Tuesday. It was wonderful to see the amount of donated home bake goods and the number of volunteers who assisted throughout the day.
Finally, as it is the end of the term, please take the opportunity to enjoy the two week break with family and friends. Students return to school on Tuesday 23 April 2019.

Parking in School Grounds & Crossing Mackenzie Street after School
A reminder that there is no parking in the school grounds morning or afternoon. It has also been brought to our attention by members of the public that parents are walking their children across the road between parked cars and busses in the afternoons. Please take care, it is an unsafe practice and we really need to be educating our children that the crossing is the safest place for them to cross the road.
Staff News
I wish to advise that Ms Leanne Anderson (1/2A) will be on Long Service Leave in Week 2 of next term. She will be replaced by Ms Tracey Neilson for the week. Also, Mrs Susan O’Dwyer is taking Long Service Leave for term 2 and will be replaced by Mrs Carol Vaughan. Mrs Carmel Bridger (SEP) is taking Long Service Leave for Terms 2 and 3 and will be replaced by Mrs Alicia Tavelardis during this time.

Modern Teaching Aids as a result of participation. The promotion runs from 1 May to 25 June. The stickers will once again be collected at the school office.

Principal
Dear Families and Friends
Well, the entries for our 5B’s Competition and Principal’s Award have been rolling in. It is wonderful to see so many children embracing the challenge and having a go. I have enjoyed reading their interpretations of what our Values and Special awards mean to them. For example:
Respectful: I think that talking to each other nicely shows respect and kindness. (A Yr 3 child)
Proud: I am proud that I always try to have a go at things. ( A Yr 1 child)
Tolerant: Accepting and including others, no matter how different, is the Dayboro way! (Yr 5)
The competition details are below. Children can continue their entries on the holidays and return them to school on the first day back of next term, Tuesday 23rd April.
EXCITING NEWS! 5B’s Awards Competition
It’s time! Time for us to re-design our 5B VALUES Awards given out at Assembly! As the children who designed the awards are no longer at our school (the designs were last updated in 2011) we would like our current children to have the chance to have their artworks on our 5B and Kindness awards.
More exciting news...... we are also introducing a PRINCIPAL'S AWARD each week. One student will be selected to receive the Principal's Award each week- Mr Drummond and/or I will be selecting a student each week who consistently demonstrates our school values of Kindness, as well as Being Proud , Positive Tolerant, Respectful and Responsible. The student that receives the Principal's Award each week will then go into the draw to be eligible for the Sheriff's Award at the end of each term.
Each year level has been given a VALUE. See below:

Voluntary Contributions
Term 1 has seen a significant uptake of the Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme. Thank you to everyone who has so far participated in this scheme. If you haven’t yet participated and you would like to, you are able to pay online by clicking the link below.
The costs involved in the Voluntary Financial Contributions are:
- $50 per student; or
- $100 per family of two or more enrolled students.
Proceeds raised through the Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme will benefit all students, so we encourage parents to participate in the scheme. Contributions received will provide classroom resources, home readers and other consumables to enhance learning activities for Literary, Numeracy, Science, Art and Technology.
The Voluntary Financial Contribution Scheme is approved by the P&C each year, and is aligned to the Department of Education policy requirements.
To pay the Voluntary Contributions online, click here for a direct link to BPOINT.
Again, thank you for your participation and the support of our students. From all the team at Dayboro SS, we wish you a happy and safe Easter break.

Learning is core business at Dayboro State School.
Differentiated Classroom Instruction
- The Australian Curriculum recognises the entitlement of each student to knowledge, understanding and skills that provide a foundation for successful and lifelong learning and participation in the Australian community
- The Australian Curriculum is based on the assumptions that each student can learn and the needs of every student are important (ACARA, 2011, 9).
Differentiated instruction is not a single strategy, but rather an approach to instruction that incorporates a variety of strategies. It is an approach that identifies and monitors the individual needs of students and matches these with ways of teaching.
At Dayboro SS teachers are aware of their students’ diverse backgrounds and know that they are academically, culturally, linguistically, economically, socially and motivationally diverse. To maximise student outcomes, teachers consider this diversity when designing educational programs to cater for individual needs.
To ascertain these learning needs, teachers monitor the progress of their students to see where they are at within a particular learning task. Teachers can monitor this progress through identifying difficulties students might be having, student strengths, and their levels of readiness, students’ interests and motivations, and the ways students learn.

CONNECTING WITH YOUR KIDS IN
MICRO-MOMENTS PART 2
SO HOW CAN YOU BUILD LOVE BRIDGES WITH YOUR CHILDREN?
- Wink at children, make funny faces, give them high fives or thumbs up – non-verbal messages of connection.
- Parents can give small symbols to hold onto in their absence like kisses in the child’s hands.
- Create a unique bedtime ritual… “I love you more than…”
- Send them rainbows when you are away.
- Create a small jar of captured kisses.
- Create an imaginary giant protector/guardian angel to watch over your child.
- Have a picture of you with your child in a locket or plastic sleeve they can keep in their bag.
- Record readable stories or bed time rituals on smart phones if you’re away.
- Take small bites out of their toast or a bite out of their sandwich.
- Leave notes or funny pictures in their lunch box or on the bathroom mirror.
- Create moments of lightness and laughter often.
- Hide special messages around the house when you go away.
- Spontaneously join them in drawing or colouring in.
- Join them on the couch randomly to watch their favourite show.
- Engage in spontaneous hugs, cuddles and tickles.
Children who feel loved through a strong heart connection will feel safer and more secure in their world – even after they have been disciplined or sanctioned for breaking boundaries or being mean and unkind. They will also be calmer and this allows them to behave better and learn better.
The more micro-moments of connection we add into our homes, the happier everyone will be. So step over the pile of washing, ignore the unanswered emails and go build some love bridges with your kids – it is never too late!
As an adolescent told me once: “I would prefer it if my parents opened their hearts more than their wallets.”
Have a great week

This week children have begun learning about a growth mindset and how to achieve this. Children have started to receive before going to school a small affirmation to carry them throughout their day. This will help develop confidence and resilience among children. Children have also held discussions around diversity thanks to Harmony Day last week. Miss Mele has begun creating a paper chain with the children to include their names on a piece of paper to display at the service. Musical instruments continue to be popular this week with children creating music with the organ and bongos. Outdoor games such as basketball, red rover, soccer and skipping continue to be favourites among children.
As we have had some new educators and new families starting this year, we have decided to use the newsletter as an opportunity to introduce and familiarise educators with the school community. First up, is Miss Katie.
Miss Katie joined the Dayboro team in 2017 and is currently in her second year studying a Bachelor of Primary Education. Miss Katie strongly enjoys being engaging in outdoor play with the children and strives to make each session as fun as possible for children. Miss Katie currently works at the service every day apart from Thursdays and is qualified to co-ordinate the service when required.
Our afternoons have been filling up very fast and we currently have a waiting list for some afternoons. We still have a handful of spaces every morning, so if you are interested in booking your child/ren in please see below on how to do this to secure your spot. If you need to change your bookings or your needs have changed, this can also be done on the iParent Portal. One of our friendly team will be happy to assist you if there are any issues with this process.
Homework club runs from 4:30-5:00pm Monday-Thursdays. Please let one of our friendly team know if you would like your child to be included in this.
We welcome all new families to the service, Helping Hands Dayboro requires online enrolment forms to be completed before attending the service. Online bookings and enrolments can be made through the iParent Portal which can be access through the Helping Hands Network site by selecting Dayboro as your service and signing up following the prompts. If you have any issues, please contact Katie at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462
