Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome to Week 3. I trust everyone has enjoyed the succession of long weekends and had the opportunity to spend valuable time with family and friends.
We are pleased that our accessible ramps are now open and that seamless pedestrian and wheelchair access to each of our school buildings is now possible. Work continues on extending the ramps to the school oval and the construction of the terracing near the senior playground.
The colours of the school are gradually changing with the painters continuing their quest to paint the entire school. This is an enormous undertaking, but we are enjoying the clean, fresh look that is being achieved.
I thank everyone for your patience as the front entrance of the school is being transformed with new paving, a new entrance and new signage. We are hoping that this will be competed this term adding a new aesthetic and welcoming edge to our school.
NAPLAN
As previously outlined in past newsletters, NAPLAN officially commences NEXT Tuesday 10 May when all Year 3 and 5 students undertake the writing task. Over the next week or more (until Wednesday 18 May in our school) the Year 3 and 5 students will be timetabled to complete the Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy tests. There are some opportunities for catch up tests due to absences. If there are any questions regarding any aspect of NAPLAN , please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
Mothers Day Stall
This week we also have the Mothers’ Day stall on Wednesday and the excitement of the Book Fair begins this Friday, further details of which are contained in this newsletter.
Anzac Day
And finally, thank you to our families who joined the ANZAC Day March on April 25. It was wonderful once again to have a large contingent sharing in the commemorative event. I would like to acknowledge the school band and school choir for once again giving excellent performances, showcasing their talent to the assembled audience. Thank you to Mr Rowan Yates and Mr Jesse Moulds for coaching and conducting our music groups for the special event.
Under 8’s Day
Dayboro State School is pleased to participate in Under 8s Week in 2022.
This year, Under Eights Week across Queensland is focussing upon the theme of ‘Celebrating the diversity of languages within the home, culture and community’.
Our school will be celebrating with a fun filled morning of activities for our Prep-2 students and our local kindergarten students on Friday 20 May from 9.00am – 10.45am.
Prep Enrolments -2023
We are already receiving enquiries about our Prep program for 2023. We are pleased to provide information and enrolment information anytime at our school office. However, I am able to advise that our Prep Information and Enrolment Morning will be held on Wednesday 17 August at 9.30am in our School Hall.
If you have a child born between 1 July 2016 – 30 June 2017, he/she is eligible for Prep enrolment at Dayboro State School in 2023. Please note that Dayboro State School has an Enrolment Management Plan in place – please check at http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/catchment/ for further information.
We have had several enquiries regarding enrolling at Dayboro Prep from outside the catchment area. Families who view Dayboro as their school of choice are very welcome to submit an enrolment application, however the outcome of the application will not be advised until late October when available places are allocated in the order of receipt.
I would be pleased if this information could be circulated to people who are known to you and are wishing to enrol in our Prep program in 2023.
School Uniform
With the cooler weather approaching, our students will want to start wearing jumpers and long pants. All students are required to wear the correct school uniform to school. The wearing of school uniform is most desirable and strongly encouraged. It helps to promote a sense of belonging, minimises school clothing costs as well as providing an important safety measure for children on excursions.
Winter Uniform
- School Hat
- School Polo Shirt and Shorts or Skorts, or Formal Uniform
- Navy Jumper
- Navy Long pants
Other coloured jumpers or jackets or black jumpers with motifs or patterns are not part of our school uniform. We appreciate your support with our uniform policy.
Traditionally, winter brings the highest amount of lost or displaced clothing. Could I please ask parents to ensure that all clothing (particularly coats, track pants and hats) are clearly marked so that items can be returned to their owners.

Dear Families and Friends
NAPLAN testing time again!
Our Year 3 and 5 students will soon participate in the annual National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests to assess their skills and understanding in the areas of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
The tests will be conducted in all state and non-state schools across the country from 10–18 May. This year all tests will be conducted online, except for the Yr.3 Writing test.
It is important that all students in these year levels arrive on time during this testing period as many sessions begin at 9am. We have Catch Up sessions planned every day for those students that are absent.
An individual NAPLAN report for each child will be sent home later this year. Results provide additional feedback for parents, carers and teachers on how students are progressing in key curriculum areas.
The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can.
Further NAPLAN information for parents and carers is available online. Please contact the school if you have any questions about your child participating in NAPLAN testing.
EXCITING WRITING
5M have been learning how to write a range of persuasive texts this term. They have had some very interesting topics to write about.
This greeted the children when they returned from holidays.
Our classroom chairs have quit!
The reasons the chairs gave are:
- You never tuck us in,
- You make too much noise when using us,
- You are always swinging on us,
- You sometimes draw on us,
- You even stand on us, and
- You can stand, it is healthy for you.
Convince our chairs they should re-engage with us!
Remember to be persuasive!
The Day the Chairs Quit!
Emily here.
Alright chairs, we really need you back! Our legs are getting super tired! I promise that we won’t swing on you anymore and that we’ll get all our swinging done in the playground. We’ll do our best to keep the noise down and draw on our note pads instead. I hope you return; I miss you!
From Emily
***
Chairs, please come back.
- We need you sometimes, like, if we have been running around a lot and need a break, we will need to sit down.
- If we are in a test and we are standing up, we will see others’ marks.
- If we are looking at the board while our teacher is teaching us, the person in front will be in the way so you can’t see passed.
- I know you need a break, but we sometimes get so tired that it feels like we will die!
These are 4 of many reasons, but I cannot list them all, the point I am getting at is … PLEASE COME BACK!!!!!
Thanks
Your friend Chloe.
***
Stay with us!
Please stay in our classroom! We all promise that if you stay, we will 100% never make too much noise, swing on you, stand on you, or even draw on you. And if you leave us, we will break our backs and get easily worn out.
I really don’t understand why anyone would do such bad things to you – all you are used for is sitting on in class time. So please stay in our classroom, we all promise we will stop the bad behaviour immediately. So come back chairs!
Your pal, Sam

Classroom Chairs Have Quit!
I know you are about to leave and all but, if you leave, you won’t have ANY warm bottoms to sit on you and keep you all snug and warm. Especially because it’s coming even closer to Winter, and you will be FREEZING without us. You might even catch a cold! Brrrr! I know that will NOT be good at all for anyone, even chairs!
As you chairs said, standing is healthy for us but that won’t be happening! You see, if we stand for 6 hours straight, all we would focus on is our aching legs and backs. We will be distracted from learning and drawn to our stinging legs. I mean what’s the point of school if you can’t learn? Eventually we all could, well, faint.
If you guys leave, who will entertain you? You will always be lonely without us and regret your move and you’ll want to come back to us. I know it might seem like a lie, but who keeps you happy by being with you? Us. If you get bored in class, you can always sleep because YOU’RE not the ones working, we are. As I said, you can do pretty much whatever, because we are the ones learning not you. You do have a choice though, that is unless we are sitting on you.
Those are all my reasons why I think you should definitely come back to us. I hope all of this persuades you.
From Emma

Please Come Back
Dear Chairs,
I know I’m your favourite kid and all, but the others are getting really tired of standing up. Let’s talk.
You try to stand up for six hours a day! Especially after lunchtime, trust me it’s really hard. Lunchtime and play are to stretch your legs and run around but when you stand up for two hours before play and you go to run around, your legs are really tired, and you can’t do anything.
So please if we promise to tuck you in, be quieter with you, don’t swing on you, never draw on you, will you come back? But unfortunately, we cannot promise we won’t stand on you. Mrs Mills needs to put posters up but will try not to use you as much. Please come back.
Sincerely yours,
Your favourite student, Bronte
****
Dear Chairs,
I know most kids, now I’m not naming names, rock on you, never tuck you in, swing on you, etc. “I am not that person.”
So, on behalf of everyone else, “PLEASE COME BACK.”
Now, I can’t promise that the other kids will stop but I know for a fact that my friends (Ella, Bronte, Abbie, Emma, Gemma, Ahleya and many more) will stop and we will try to help you poor chairs. We appreciate you for your hard work.
Now life must be hard for a chair when everyone drags you on the floor and hurts your feet. Your only break is when we go to lunch and home time but people like my friends and I will be nice to you.
Love Isabella
****
Hey Chairs,
It’s me Ella. We cannot have you quit! We need you! What are we supposed to do if we can’t sit down! We won’t be able to work properly or concentrate. If we can’t concentrate, then we won’t get good marks! Our handwriting will be messy and no-one would be able to read it. Yeah, standing up may be healthy, but we have to sit down! You must come back!
Your tired and sick of standing up friend, Ella.
P.S. Our legs will get sore, and everyone will moan all the time if you don’t come back.
****
I apologise for the inconveniences, but we need you to sit on.
I am sorry that you aren’t tucked in but the kids that do that want to be first in line and we promise that it won’t happen again.
I also apologise that it is too loud some kids are just born loud and some kids are born quiet, and we are enthusiastic to go to lunch and we will try to keep it down.
Our school doesn’t have swings, so we make do with what we’ve got, and and it helps us think. So, we use you to swing but we will stop as soon as possible.
We sometimes draw on you because the teacher says that we can’t draw on our books and I’m sorry that people do draw on you.
We only stand on you because we need to get something high up on the wall for learning and I’m sorry you don’t like it.
I know it’s healthy, but our legs get tired, and we need to focus and if we are standing then we are focusing on that more, so we get lower scores in a test.
I am sorry that all these things make you mad but maybe we could work things out and co-operate better.
Please come back,
Will

To our Lovely Classroom Chairs,
Please come back to our classroom and be our nice chairs again.
- We promise we won’t leave you out and we will always tuck you in when we’re not using you.
- We won’t make lots of noise when we’re using you, or putting you away, or when we’re stacking you at the end of the day.
- We especially won’t swing or rock on you because
- It is very dangerous, and you could get hurt.
- You don’t like it when we do it.
- We will never, ever, ever draw on you again because we are all very good children.
- We all promise that we most definitely won’t stand on you to get to higher places anymore.
- We all know that standing is good and healthy for our body and our muscles but we would much rather sit on you guys than just stand in the one place and also our legs start to hurt when we stand for too long.
We need our chairs back. Will you please come back to us if we do all of those things?
So are you coming back?
Yay? or Nay?
Please circle one or the other.
Your friend,
Ahleya

Change to Report Card Format
Dear Parents / Carers,
At the end of this semester you will see that this year’s report card formatting is slightly different to what it has been in the past.
This year you will see an achievement and effort rating only for your child.
At the end of the report card there will be a behaviour comment as well as an overall comment encompassing your child’s academic progress.
If you have any questions about your child’s progress after receiving the report card, please contact your child’s teacher.
An e-mail will be sent to parents prior to report cards, reminding you of your child’s term overviews which outline what curriculum was taught throughout the semester in each learning area.
If you have any questions at all about these changes, please email me: dmath9@eq.edu.au
Thank you
Dee Mathiesen
Acting Head of Department – Curriculum

Library and Maker Space News
Lego Robotics
On the 21st of April selected students in Year 5 participated in a RoboCoast robotics event held at Undurba State School. Throughout the event students were encouraged to work with their partner, and other teams, to solve coding problems. All groups coded a robot to drive in a square using coded steps, follow a line on robotics mat using a light sensor, and participate in a Sumo challenge using a proximity sensor and light sensor. The participating students are to be commended for their perseverance when solving coding problems.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 9th of May marks the beginning of the reading period for the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 2 need to read or experience 20 books, students in Year 3 and Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books. Reading record sheets are available from class teachers and from the Library.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Students in all year levels are welcome to join in with the 22nd annual National Simultaneous Storytime event on the 25th of May during first break from 11.00 a.m. After listening to this year’s book, “Family Tree”, students are welcome to stay for the remainder of first break and join in with our celebration activities.
May is National Family Reading Month
Is your family participating in the 31 Day Reading Challenge? Visit the Scholastic website for more information and take up the challenge with your family.
Did you know reading for just 10 minutes a day exposes children to more than 600,000 words in one year? The benefit of this word exposure is immense—reading more improves a child’s performance in general knowledge, vocabulary, reading comprehension, verbal fluency and spelling.
Have a great week!

Dear parents and caregivers
Over the last fortnight, children have re-ignited their interest in jigsaw puzzles, resulting in a table solely for an ongoing jigsaw puzzle. It is great to see children problem solving where pieces go and persisting to find a particular piece.
We commemorated ANZAC Day with bottlecap poppies that are proudly on display in our service. Children discussed the different coloured poppies available and their significance. They also shared how they commemorate ANZAC Day, whether they march or attend the dawn service. Hearing our children acknowledge historical events and understand the significance of these was wonderful.
Please remember to bring a jumper for the cooler mornings and afternoons. We will be transitioning inside sooner than usual as the weather continues to cool down.
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings. Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no-show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Looking to join in on the fun?
Enrolling your child/ren is easy and there are no enrolment fees. Visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au , click 'How to enrol’ on the right-hand side of the page, and follow the steps. When this is submitted, we will be in touch as soon as possible to support the finalisation of your enrolment and initial bookings. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny or Katie at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts team on 1300 612 462.
