Swimming Carnivals
Junior
We are super excited about our carnival on Friday! A reminder that there will be no tuckshop at school on Friday, so please pack your children’s lunch to take to the pool. The Juniors will have a morning tea break at the pool and then will travel back to school before second break. On arrival at school (about 12:45pm), all the children will sit with their classes in the CSA to have their lunch. If parents are collecting children, this will be the place that teachers will be able to sign out. Teachers will not sign out children at the pool, their focus needs to be on supporting the children at the carnival and then packing up ready to transport the children to school.
Parents are welcome to support at the pool. Please see your child’s class teacher is you are available to support them walking to and from the pool.
Thank you for your understanding. We appreciate your support.
Senior Carnival
Of course, our senior swimming carnival will take place next Tuesday 23 November, starting at 9:00am. We aim to be finished by around 2:30pm. The carnival program is finalised, and sessions of novelty races have been included.
This year, the children have two options for arriving at the carnival. Parents, you may drop children at school early to walk down with school staff, or you may take your children directly to the pool to be handed over to staff at the gate. If you choose the second option, please don’t arrive until after 8:40am. These children will then be supervised in their house areas until the rest of the senior students arrive at the pool. Of course, if you are attending as a spectator or volunteer you may bring your children with you. Class rolls will be marked before events begin.
Thank you to those parents who have volunteered to help with timekeeping at the pool – you will be contacted this week to let you know which session you will be required.
Please remember the following for BOTH carnivals:
- Bring lunch, sunscreen, hats, plenty of water and sun safe swimming gear. There will be shade provided on the day.
- If you are walking to the pool in the morning, please wear your togs underneath your sports house uniform if possible. Closed in shoes must be worn for the walk. Be at school by no later than 8:30am for the senior carnival, 8:40am for the Junior.
- Senior students, if you are being dropped at the pool in the morning, but walking back to school in the afternoon – please make sure you have the appropriate uniform and closed in shoes to wear for this trip.
- The pool canteen will be open for lunch and refreshments.
From your friendly Sports Committee!

Planning for 2022
As we near the end of this year, we are eagerly planning for our end of year celebrations. Our calendar of events in this newsletter will help you to plan forward for these events!
We are also in full swing planning for 2022. We look like maintaining our enrolments at around 370 students, with 15 classes planned. Our teachers are working hard to plan for balanced classes where our students all have a friendship group. To assist us in our planning, we really need to ensure that we have accurate enrolment information.
Could you please let our admin officers know if your child is not
returning in 2022
Student Leadership Opportunities
We have been sharing with our Year 4 and 5 students our leadership opportunities for 2022. The P&C endorsed Leadership process is attached below. Next week we will listen to our prospective School Captains speeches and vote. We will also hold our elections for short listed Sports and Vice Captains. Our final panel interviews will take place in week 9. We will announce all of our 2022 leadership positions at our final assembly on Thursday 9 December. Good luck to all of our applicants!
Have a great week!
Gabrielle
Dear Families and Friends
Well with 4 weeks to go this time of year is always about reflection and celebrating growth in learning and understanding as well as personal growth for students. I love this poem and I apologise, but I do bring it out every year because it summarises exactly how we see our role as educators here at Dayboro. It reminds us all that educating is not always just about the pursuit of academic achievement but also about unlocking the potential for all children to succeed, to become kind, caring and authentic citizens of the future and to fulfil their own dreams.
Our Prep Orientation mornings have been a huge success. We welcomed students from Barefoot, LEAD and our Dayboro Community Kindy. We can’t wait until our Prep class of 2022 join us!
Social Media and Primary School Students
Many students use or have access to some form of social media. Many visit these sites every day. There are plenty of good things about social media — but also many risks and things students should avoid. They don't always make good choices when they post something to a site, and this can lead to problems. So, it's important to talk with your children about how to use social media wisely. It is also important to note that many apps have an age restriction of 13+ for very good reasons.
What's Good About Social Media
Social media can help kids:
- stay connected with friends and family
- volunteer or get involved with a campaign, non-profit, or charity
- enhance their creativity by sharing ideas, music, and art
- meet and interact with others who share similar interests
- communicate with educators and fellow students
What's Bad About Social Media
The flipside is that social media can be a hub for things like cyberbullying and questionable activities. Without meaning to, children can share more online than they should.
- post photos of themselves online or use their real names on their profiles
- reveal their birthdates and interests
- post their school name and the town where they live
This can make them easy targets for online predators and others who might mean them harm. In fact, many children say they have:
- been contacted online by someone they didn't know in a way that made them feel scared or uncomfortable
- received online advertising that was inappropriate for their age
- lied about their age to get access to websites
Concerns and Consequences
- Besides problems like cyberbullying and online predators, children also can face the possibility of a physical encounter with the wrong person. Many newer apps automatically reveal the poster's location when they're used. This can tell anyone exactly where to find the person using the app.
- And photos, videos, and comments made online usually can't be taken back once they're posted. Even when a child thinks something has been deleted, it can be impossible to completely erase it from the Internet.
- Posting an inappropriate photo can damage a reputation and cause problems years later — such as when a potential employer or college admissions officer does a background check. And sending a mean-spirited text, even as a joke, can be very hurtful to someone else and even taken as a threat.
- Spending too much time on social media can be a downer too. Seeing how many "friends" others have and the pictures of them having fun can make children feel bad about themselves or like they don't measure up to their peers.
What Can Parents Do?
It's important to be aware of what your children do online. But snooping can alienate them and damage the trust you've built together. The key is to stay involved in a way that makes your children understand that you respect their privacy but want to make sure they're safe.
Tell your kids that it's important to:
- Be nice. Mean behaviour is not OK. Make it clear that you expect your children to treat others with respect, and to never post hurtful or embarrassing messages. And ask them to always tell you about any harassing or bullying messages that others post.
- Think twice before hitting "enter." Remind children that what they post can be used against them. For example, letting the world know that you're off on vacation or posting your home address gives would-be robbers a chance to strike. Children also should avoid posting specific locations of parties or events, as well as phone numbers.
- Follow the "WWGS?" (What Would Grandma Say?) rule. Teach children not to share anything on social media that they wouldn't want their teachers, future bosses — and yes, grandma — to see.
- Use privacy settings. Privacy settings are important. Go through them together to make sure your children understand each one. Also, explain that passwords are there to protect them against things like identity theft. They should never share them with anyone, even a best friend.
- Don't "friend" strangers. "If you don't know them, don't friend them." This is a plain, simple — and safe — rule of thumb.
Make a Contract
Consider making a "social media agreement" with your children — a real contract they can sign. In it, they agree to protect their own privacy, consider their reputation, and not give out personal information. They also promise not to use technology to hurt anyone else through bullying or gossip.
Parents also can help keep children grounded in the real world by putting limits on media use. Keep computers in public areas in the house, avoid laptops and smartphones in bedrooms, and set some rules on the use of technology (such as no devices at the dinner table). And don't forget: Setting a good example through your own virtual behaviour can go a long way toward helping your kids use social media safely.

WRITING AT DAYBORO
At Dayboro we value creative, authentic and engaging writing for a purpose. Our goal for 2021 has been to lift the engagement of our students in writing in all its’ forms, to improve through individual goal setting and identifying clear expectations for improvement and to celebrate successes in writing. Our teachers work hard to embed the teaching of high quality writing practices in their classrooms. Teachers meet regularly to discuss and share writing samples of students and it is pleasing to see our students working so diligently on their writing goals and becoming better writers!
Having a clear goal and explicit success criteria to drive improvement for making our writing better has certainly been working in Year 3. Below are some excellent examples of Poems about a Special Place that the Yr 3 students have been creating.
My Jungle Community
In the green and shady jungle
A place away from all the buildings
I can see…
A pouncy panther a slithery snake
Silly monkeys and a gleaming lake
Chirping birds and buzzing bees
Living way up in the trees
I can hear…
Monkeys screaming to get away
Birds chirping, I say yay
Buzzing bees going to flowers
A cub with its mother looking at towers
I can feel…
The green wet grass below my feet
Its been a long walk I need a seat
The scratchy bark the freezing breeze
And the leaves falling on my knees
The animals are lovely get out of the city
Welcome all to my jungle community!!!

My Ford Ute Community
In the flaxen leather ute
On the wet splashy road
I can see:
The dark grey gearstick moving near the screen
Light blue pins moving the speed
Lights flashing right at ME!
My shiny wet Ford all to BE!
I can hear:
The engine roaring like never before
Brakes squealing, I don’t know more
The wheels gripping while I’m drifting
My wheels are broken so its lifting
I can feel:
The silky soft leather seats
While I’m eating the meats
The rough wheels rolling
The Police Swat Car patrolling
The sparkling stars shining
Welcome to my FORD UTE COMMUNITY!!!!!
Thank you for reading BY ETHAN - BYE!!!
The Night Desert Sky
In the great night sky
Where the stars slumber
I can See …
Lightening star in the dark skies
Camels sleeping in the desert sands
Whooshing winds moving the glowing fire flies
The emu’s footprints in the village of the sands.
I can Hear …
The pushing of a desert sand
The dancing melody of a rattlesnake’s tail
A scorching sound of this beautiful harsh land
An eagle’s victory it’s preys final flail.
I can Feel …
The deserts grainy sand under my hot feet
The wind brushing on my hair
The pounding of camel hooves
The whoosh in the sky of birds wing

Now that the days are starting to get warmer please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during play times and PE lessons. The rule is “No Hat, no Play!”
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.
Collect your child’s medication from school
Remember to collect your child’s medication from school before the holidays begin and store them correctly at home.Learn more about storage of medications such as asthma inhalers and adrenaline auto-injectors (for example, EpiPens) at the NPS Medicinewise website.
You should also check the expiry dates before taking medications back to school after the holidays.
Remembrance Day
Even though our Yr 6 student leaders were at camp and were unable to attend our local service, the school still honoured this day through a minute of silence as well as sending our representative, Mrs Mac, to the service. Thank you to our lovely Yr 6 parent who made our floral tribute.

Lest we forget.

Library Borrowing
We are quickly approaching the end of the 2021 school year and all Library books need to be returned to the Library by the 29th of November. Some students have indicated that they are unable to find books they currently have on loan – we suggest looking for misplaced books on book cases at home (or in classrooms), in toy boxes, under beds, or in the family car. Books can turn up in some very strange places. ?
Notes for missing books will be sent home in Week 9.

The Dayboro Dominators
On Saturday 6th November, four students from Dayboro State School participated in the First Lego League competition held in Noosaville (Lexie Atkinson, David Heath, Maddie Garland and Xavier Zuvela). Twenty-four teams from the region attended the day, competing fiercely across the three domains: robot game, innovation project and core values judging. In preparation for the competition, the team spent countless hours together giving up their lunch times as well as participating in before and after school sessions. On the day, the Dayboro Dominators were a strong performing team, showcasing their hard work and efforts along with their brilliant teamwork skills.
We are very proud of them!
Over the past fortnight our children have shown high levels of interest in our sandpit and loose parts area. The sandpit has opened opportunities for children to sculpt a variety of animals, cars and even a car couch. Children have shown collaboration, commitment and pride when constructing and sharing their creations.
The loose parts area has promoted cubby house building, tyre stacking and balancing on tyres to name a few. This area is entirely child-centred and allows children to take educated risks and develop collaboration and resilience.
We also welcomed back Miss Katie after she completed her third-year teaching practicum. Miss Katie was extremely excited to see all the changes in the service and catch up with children and families alike.
Vacation care bookings have opened for December/January. Children can be booked in via the iparent portal, under the bookings tab. A reminder that children must be enrolled prior to commencing care (how to enrol is further down). We have some fantastic excursions, incursions and theme days planned, so stay tuned for the brochure (current families should have received a copy via the iparent portal communications).
A reminder that children require a hat and re-fillable drink bottle each session. Please ensure these are correctly labelled should they get misplaced.
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings. Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no-show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Looking to join in on the fun?
Enrolling your child/ren is easy and there are no enrolment fees. Visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au , click Register on the top right corner, select Dayboro as your service and fill in all the details to register your iParent Portal account and enrol. When this is submitted, we will be in touch as soon as possible to support the finalisation of your enrolment and initial bookings. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.
