Learning through exploring
Over the last two weeks, our students have been involved in some great learning, this time outside the classroom! In week 6, we had our Preps, Year 1 and 2 students participate in Under 8’s day and in week 6 we had many of our Year 1 and 2 students venture off on their Town Walk excursion.
Children learn so many things through play, exploring creativity and also getting out and about. Under 8’s day is always full of wonder and engagement. It was fabulous to see the children engaging in the many ‘learning’ activities! Thank you to all of our community partners for also supporting activities.
The Dayboro Town Walk was a chance for the children to explore their local community, working out how they fit into this wonderful local area and have connection to place. The many conversations that the children had on their return about the special places in their local town was amazing! How lucky are our students to be able to explore such historical sites that have served the local people over time?
We look forward to many more excursions/incursions this year to put learning into action!

Blue cards
We love helpers! Just a reminder that to volunteer at school or during an excursion, volunteers, who are not parents of or students (e.g. grandparents, aunties/uncles etc), must have a blue card to support our students. We would love to have the support all volunteers, so please encourage your family to apply for a blue card if they are intending to support in our school by attending an excursion or supporting our fundraisers.

Concerns? We want to know…
From time to time, we understand that parents need to contact the school if they are concerned and would like to discuss their child. We want to ensure that there is always an open line of communication. A reminder that the best first point of contact is the classroom teacher who knows your child best and will be keen to help resolve any problems. If you need to talk further or if the concern is ongoing, Karen and I will be available to work with you and the classroom teacher.
The best way to solve problems is of course promptly communicating directly with the school. Discussing school concerns in the community, or on social media does not help us move forward. We are keen to work with the community to maintain a safe and supportive environment.
Thank you for your support!
Have a great week!

Dear Families and Friends
On Wednesday 19th May we participated in National Simultaneous Story Time day. The book chosen this year was GIVE ME SOME SPACE written and illustrated by Philip Bunting, and even more exciting was that the children got to listen to a reading by astronaut Dr Shannon Walker LIVE from the International Space station. Children across Australia were all read this book at the same time and then were involved in activities afterwards. Our children were entertained at the hall with activities and a special reading of the book. A special thanks to Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs Hetherington for organising this special day.
On Friday 21st May we also held our annual event “Under 8’s day”
The Prep -2 students, many assisted by their wonderful parents, spent the morning doing a range of fun activities that supported the theme of Under 8’s week across Australia this year “Children Celebrating Outdoor Play and Learning.” We certainly did this with glorious weather for the day and lots of bubble blowing, hula hooping and obstacle course fun to be had. A big thank you to our local Kindy groups, Helping Hands, our Fire and Rescue services, and Sgt Ken and Sgt Paul for helping to make the day very special also.

Scooter, Skateboard and rollerblade riders.
We have some members of our community highly concerned about the safety of our children, some of who are not riding their scooters safely and responsibly around town, especially on footpaths and near other pedestrians. If your child scooters to and from school please take the time to talk to your child about the importance of riding safely and at a sensible speed near pedestrians. Below are some more detailed points to discuss with them:
Foot scooter, skateboard and rollerblade riders should always wear an approved helmet, properly fitted and fastened, as well as protective pads on their knees and elbows.
Bicycle helmets with a standards approved sticker, properly fitted and fastened provide the best head protection.
Remind your child to be considerate of pedestrians. Your child should keep to the left and ride in a courteous manner that does not cause other road users to react suddenly. They need to slow down or walk in busy areas.
Your child will be more visible wearing bright, light coloured or reflective clothing. They should ride in a safe place off-road and away from vehicles and driveways.
Your child should avoid using foot scooters, skateboards and rollerblades in car parks and on roads.
WINTER IS ON ITS WAY!
Thank you to Chappy Andrew and St Aidan’s Anglican church for organising the delivery of chocolates again for our staff. What a lovely gesture!!!
Also thank you Chappy for all your hard work for our school. Happy Chappy Week !!Thank you Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
We have a diagnosed case of Chicken Pox in our school community so it is important that we keep up to date with what to look for and what to do if you think your child might also have symptoms.
Below is a document from Qld Health on Chickenpox and also the Time Out poster you may have seen before, which advises the minimum exclusion periods for communicable diseases including chickenpox.
If you have any concerns regarding your childs health, you should make contact with your GP.
TUCKSHOP – VOLUNTEERS DESPERATELY NEEDED
Last Friday there were no volunteers to assist Mrs Taylor with tuckshop! Only for Mrs Taylor’s own family and another very generous parent, were the children able to get their lunches.
There remain many vacant spots on the monthly roster, leaving the tuckshop at risk of simply not being able to open. Mrs Taylor is amazing, but she cannot do this on her own and needs your help! At least 2-3 volunteers are required each opening day to assist with preparation, bagging and distributing lunches as there are many hungry children to feed.
If you can spare one Wednesday or Friday per month, we would be very thankful for your time. You may even like to consider pairing up with another parent and alternating your months.
Please get in contact with Mrs Taylor on 3425 6132 (Wednesdays or Fridays) or at tuckshop@dayboropandc.org.au

Assessment and Reporting
Semester 1, 2021
Dear Parents/ Carers,
At Dayboro State School teachers report to parents about:
- the student’s achievement against expected standards;
- how well the student is engaging with the expected learning; and
- how the student may be able to improve.
Reporting to parents occurs four times each school year across two platforms:
- Report Cards at end of Semester 1 and 2
- Parent Teacher Interviews in Term 1 and Term 3
Dayboro State School’s reporting processes reflect the requirements outlined in the Department of Education’s P-12 Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Framework and associated policies.
Semester report cards are emailed home to parents in Week 10 of Terms 2 and Term 4 and made available online via QParents. A 5-point scale is used and varies depending on year level as shown below.
An explanation of the reporting scales is provided on the front page of student reports for parents.
It is important to recognise that the Australian Curriculum achievement standards clearly outline the expectations of a ‘C’, ‘Sound’ or ‘Working With’ standard. If your child receives a ‘C’ (or equivalent), they are operating at the year level standard/expectation. A ‘C’ means that the student is achieving everything required for the subject at that stage in their corresponding year level at school. Therefore, attaining a ‘C for their Achievement means that they are on target for their age and year level.
If you would like any more information about reporting, please contact me or your child’s teacher.
What parents can do at home to help their kids with reading
PART B
Useful reading tips
When your child is reading and encounters words that are difficult for them, use the Three Ps technique ‘Pause, Prompt, Praise' to support them.
Pause: when your child comes to a word they don't know, try not to jump in straight away. Wait and give your child time to work out the word.
Prompt: if your child successfully works out the problem word, suggest they go back to the beginning of the sentence and re-read it (to recap meaning) before reading on.
If your child has not worked out the problem word, prompt them with some quick, low-key suggestions. Say things like:
- "Try reading on for a sentence or two, miss out the difficult word and see if that helps you to work it out."
- "Look at the sound the word begins with, use that clue, and think about what may make sense here? Look at the pictures."
If prompts like these are not working, simply tell your child the correct word.
Try not to spend too much time prompting, as your child will find it difficult to maintain the overall meaning of what they are reading.
Praise: praise your child's reading efforts and successes.
Things to remember about reading
- The goal of reading is always to make sense of what is read.
- Try to be interested, supportive and enjoy the time together.
- Read with your child anywhere and at any time; don't forget that many everyday experiences provide opportunities to put reading and writing into action.
- Visit and use a library near you. Borrow books for yourself as well as for your child.
- Talk to your child's classroom teacher or the principal for further help and advice.
If you would like any support with helping your child with reading at home, please see your child’s teacher or contact Mrs Smith in the LEAP room.
Regards, Linda Smith

Therefore, School Banking at our school will continue up to and including Monday 21st June to facilitate the closing of the program after the last banking day and to distribute and order any prizes to the students before the close of the program.
The final date for your child to order rewards will be Monday 21stJune 2021 and those prizes will be distributed at the beginning of Term 3.
If you require further information, please come and see one of the friendly School Banking Co-ordinators in the Tuckshop on Monday mornings at 9am or contact us through the school office.
We would like to thank you for your participation and support throughout the School Banking program.
P&C Banking Team
Dear Parents and Caregivers
Our children have developed co-ordination skills to perfect the fundamental movement skill of throwing and catching. This has been heavily practiced during a basketball game called Master. Children are regularly showing fair play and the ability to adjust the game to include younger children and challenge other children. This has been shown by extending or reducing the distance between the hoop and throw line. We recently received a variety of new blocks to acknowledge under 8’s Day on the 21st of May and these blocks have sparked creativity among children of varying ages in both morning and afternoon sessions.
Vacation care is 4 weeks away, so keep an eye out in your emails for a copy of the program and be sure to secure your bookings via the iParent Portal. It is essential that children are enrolled into the service before bookings can be made. Please visit the link below to enrol your child.
Lastly, MoovGames kicks off this week. The program includes organized games from our Moovosity software that our children have participated in for some time. Weeks 1,2 & 3 allow children to compete against themselves in individual and group games. The final week acts as a mini-Olympics with different activities to showcase what the children have learned/strengthened in the sessions. No prior skills are required, only enthusiasm to have a go and a willingness to improve. There are lanyards, stickers and certificates up for grabs to acknowledge the efforts throughout the program.
When is MoovGames? Tuesday and Thursday ASC 4pm-4:30pm, from week beginning 31/5/2021, to week ending 25/6/2021
What is the cost? No additional cost to parents, however children must be enrolled and booked in prior to attending.
How does my child sign up? Sign up is available at the service during sessions.
What does my child need to bring? Hat and re-fillable water bottle.
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings. Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Vacancies are available for both morning and afternoon sessions on selected days, and we welcome all children and families to the service. To enrol your child, please visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, selecting Dayboro as your service and following the prompts to access the iParent Portal. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.
