How do our students know how to be successful?
This term, our teachers have already been collaborating to analyse our students’ pre-assessments, ensuring that they understand what our students already know and what they will need to learn to be successful. This has allowed our teachers to target their teaching and work with their students to be very clear about what they will need to learn to be successful in their learning. In writing, students are now working with their teachers to develop their learning goals and using the criteria that the teachers have helped the students to understand they are working to ‘bump up’ their writing. Teachers are using their classroom walls as another learning space for children to access super examples of student work.
Why don’t you ask your child what they are learning about in English, specifically writing.

Wear BLUE on Friday for Autism Awareness
This Friday, our Student Council will run our first school awareness day for the year – Autism awareness (we were unable to celebrate on 2 April due to holidays). An estimated 1 in 70 people in Australia are on the autism spectrum (www.autismspectrum.org.au).
On the day, our staff will discuss how students on the autism spectrum disorder learn and communicate. At Dayboro State School, we are passionate about inclusion of all our students and we know that education is the key.
We will NOT be asking students to bring a gold coin on Friday, there will be enough purchases to manage with our Mothers’ Day stall and Book Fair commencing.
Our student councillors and school captains will discuss the upcoming day with their classes and help them to understand the importance of awareness. We look forward to this inclusive event!

Have a great week!

Dear Families and Friends
NAPLAN testing time again!
Our Year 3 and 5 students will soon participate in the annual National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests to assess their skills and understanding in the areas of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
The tests will be conducted in all state and non-state schools across the country from 11–19 May. This year all tests will be conducted online, except for the Yr.3 Writing test.
It is important that all students in these year levels arrive on time during this testing period as many sessions begin at 9am. We have Catch Up sessions planned every day for those students that are absent.
An individual NAPLAN report for each child will be sent home later this year. Results provide additional feedback for parents, carers and teachers on how students are progressing in key curriculum areas.
The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can.
Further NAPLAN information for parents and carers is available online. Please contact the school if you have any questions about your child participating in NAPLAN testing.
EXCITING NEWS
Parent Sessions are back. Please consider attending our first parent session being held by Mrs Linda Smith our Head of Curriculum. Come and learn more about how to help your child with Spelling. Mrs Smith will be sharing how we teach spelling here at Dayboro in our P-3 year levels.
IMPORTANT NEWS FOR KEEPING YOUR CHILD AND OTHER KIDS HEALTHY!
Thank you to our whole school community for supporting Photo Day last Friday. It was such a pleasure to see nearly 100% of our students in their formal uniform and Preps in their Prep shirts. Well done everyone!
Thank you also to Ms Marks for her excellent organization of some major sports events that were held in Week 1. Cross Country and Gala Day were both hugely successful and fun days. It is a huge task. It is pleasing to see our students do so well! Good luck to all our students competing at District Cross Country today.
Finally, a huge thank you to all the mothers, grandmothers and caregivers who love, support and work hard for their families every day. We hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day this Sunday surrounded by your loved ones.
Thank you from Mrs Ryan
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
The importance of Learning Goals
What are your child’s learning goals for Term 2?
Depending on the age of your child, they might include:
- to write a sentence using a full stop and capital letter at the beginning;
- to solve a two-step Maths problem;
- to work co-operatively with others; or
- to identify the language features of a poem.
Teachers and students in all classrooms at Dayboro State School will be working together on each student’s learning goals for Term 2 and the steps needed to achieve these goals.
The starting place for all effective instruction is designing and
communicating clear learning goals.
Marzano (2009)
Ask your child this week what his or her learning goals are for this term and what he or she will need to do to achieve them. Your support will have a huge impact on their learning.
Regards, Linda Smith
Head of Department (Curriculum)

2M - Science
In Science, 2M have been learning about the properties of materials and how certain materials can be suited to certain uses.
Our task was to combine two different materials together to make a lunch box that was water resistent and strong enough to hold a sandwich and an orange.
Here are some of our spectacular students and their amazing products that all passed the test!

New Books
Last week we took delivery of some very exciting new books for the Library collection. The purchase of these books was made possible thanks to the rewards we receive from Scholastic Book Club and Book Fair. Every purchase families make when purchasing books through Book Club and Book Fair contributes to a rewards program offered by Scholastic. The reward points can then be used to purchase books requested by the students to add to the Library.
This month we were able to purchase new releases in popular book series including “Dog Man”, “The Bad Guys” and “Weirdo”. We were also able to include some new books with unicorns and Minecraft that had been requested by the students. Thank you for your continued support.
Lego Robotics Club
Students in years 4, 5, and 6 have an opportunity to participate in a Lego Robotics Club on Tuesday at first break. Over the last week interested students have started building their first robot and will learn coding basics in the coming weeks.
We are working towards putting a small team together to participate in a local robotics tournament at the end of the term. It is not too late for students to join if they are interested, but students who come along are asked to make the commitment to come each week for the duration of the term.
Other Reminders:
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 10th of May marks the beginning of the reading period for the 20201 Premier’s Reading Challenge. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books. Reading record sheets are available from class teachers and from the Library.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Our annual National Simultaneous Storytime event will be held on the 19th of May in the school hall at 11.00 a.m. This year’s book, “Give Me Some Space”, will be read live by an astronaut on the International Space Station.
Students are welcome to join in with our space themed activities after listening to the book.

Book Fair Starts This Week!
Book Fair opens this Friday May 7th at 8.00 a.m. and will run until Wednesday May 12th.
Book Fair will be open before school each day from 8.00 a.m. and after school until approximately 4.00 p.m.
Parents and caregivers are welcome to visit book fair (please ensure social distancing guidelines are followed). Payment for books can be made online, using EFTPOS facilities at the Book Fair, and with cash.

The preview below shows some of the exciting books that will be available at Book Fair. Also shown is a payment slip for families who wish to make payment on line.
Popular book titles often sell out quickly, but most are able to be ordered for delivery within approximately 7 days of the book fair’s completion. Please note that stationery items that sell out quickly cannot be reordered.
We hope to see you at our Book Fair!
Over the past fortnight we held our presentation for our Moov March program. This program developed fundamental movement skills such as throwing, catching, running, kicking and striking. All children showed improvements in their skills as well as enthusiasm and teamwork. See below for all our recipients. Our moovosity program will continue to run during after school care.
Term two has resumed and children are continuing to engage in sustainable practices, including watering plants, planting seeds and ensuring lights are turned off at the end of each session.
We have also been engaging in different art activities for Earth Day and ANZAC Day.
With the weather cooling, please ensure your child/ren have a jumper packed.
New term means a great time to check your bookings are up to date via the iparent portal. If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings. Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Vacancies are available for both morning and afternoon sessions on selected days, and we welcome all children and families to the service. To enrol your child, please visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, selecting Dayboro as your service and following the prompts to access the iParent Portal. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.
