Welcome Back!
Its great to be back. It was wonderful seeing the students return yesterday with smiles on their faces as they reconnect with their friends and their teachers and other staff members.
We look forward to a productive term of learning. Our teachers worked hard during the lockdown planning the term 2 units and preparing engaging learning activities suited to the needs of their class. Over this first week, students will participate in some pre-assessments to ensure that teachers can target their teaching to the students’ needs. Already it has been great to see our students engaged in their learning, being challenged and engaged in their learning.

Cross Country
Today it was wonderful for the students to finally be able to participate in the Cross-Country carnival. Congratulations to all of our students for their participation and to all students who placed in their age groups!
Thank you to Mrs Marks for all of her preparation, Mr Horne and Mr Reis for training students with Mrs Marks and to all of the staff and parents who assisted today.
The students really enjoyed their ice blocks from the P&C today. Thank you for the support!

ANZAC Day Services Term 2
This week, we will commemorate ANZAC Day at Dayboro State School with a formal service on Wednesday 21 April at 9:15am. We will welcome special guest Richard Hawkins from the War Memorial Society. All parents and carers are of course welcome to attend and we will consider our Covid requirements.
On ANZAC Day, Sunday 25 April, we will of course also participate in the community march and service. Please consider supporting our march. All students are welcome and should meet Mrs Ryan and myself, in full school formal uniform, on the footpath outside the Dayboro Hotel at 9:20am. Once we complete our march at the showgrounds, parents and carers will need to collect their children. The School Captains and the Choir will attend the 10am ceremony. The School Captains will lay a wreath on behalf of our Dayboro School community and our school choir will perform the Australian and New Zealand anthems and ‘The last Anzac’. We look forward to seeing you there to commemorate this very special occasion.

Have a great week!

Dear Families and Friends
Welcome back to Term 2. We hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable break. The children all seemed very excited yesterday to be back, especially after their extended break, and had lots of great stories to tell about their holidays and Easter adventures. We were very disappointed that so many important events in our school calendar had to be postponed or even cancelled. But…. we are looking forward to Cross Country and Gala Day being on this week instead.
EXCITING PBL NEWS! Each week we give a Principal’s Award to a student who displays consistent and reliable efforts in living our school values of being Safe, Responsible and a Learner every day and in every way! The children who receive this award each week will now be invited to a Principal’s Morning Tea held in Week 10 of each term. More details to come. Also, those students who receive our special Golden Gotchas will now get a special certificate and go into the draw to receive one of four Sheriff’s Awards, also given out at the end of each term. This is a prize voucher and certificate presented by Sgt Ken on Assembly in Week 10, of each term and recognises those students who go above and beyond, to demonstrate excellent citizenship at our school.
IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
Education Queensland has issued advice to schools regarding the administration of medications to students.
All medication, including over‐the‐counter medications, e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen or alternative medications, are identified as drugs or poisons that may cause side effects. As such, the school requires medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner, e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist, but not a pharmacist, to administer any medication to students, including those bought over‐the‐counter.
Unlike parents/guardians, school employees are unaware of a student’s complete medical history, and are unable to provide ongoing, direct supervision of the student for the course of their illness. They are therefore unlikely to recognise if a student is having adverse effects to any medications administered. Health practitioners also have knowledge of medical history in order to determine which over‐the‐counter medications are appropriate, dosage amounts and potential side effects or interactions with other medications.
What you need to know:
- The school can no longer administer any medication, including over‐the‐counter medications, e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen or alternative medications identified as drugs or poisons that may cause side effects, to students without medical authorisation from a prescribing health practitioner e.g. doctor, dentist, optometrist.
- Medical authorisation from a pharmacist cannot be accepted.
- Over‐the‐counter medications currently stored at the school will no longer be administered to students without medical authorisation.
- Listed emergency contacts for the student are able to personally attend the school and administer over‐the‐counter medications to their child if they do not wish to obtain medical authorisation.
Please ensure your medication details are updated with the school and that you have alerted office staff to medical conditions that we need to be aware of.
Thank you to our P&C for their dedication and organisation over the last term and for the terms to come! You even held an extra meeting to ensure one of our events to come is going to be the best ever. We are looking forward to supporting the Mother’s Day stall on the 7th May.
Thank you from Mrs Ryan

DSS Right Brain Decoding, Phonics and Spelling Program
Dayboro State School’s Right Brain Decoding, Phonics and Spelling Program was developed by a previous Learning Support Teacher at our school, Trudy Brooks, and is implemented in all classes from Prep to Year 3. All teacher aides have also been trained to work with students on this program.
Trudy developed the Right Brain program in consultation with James Cook University when she was studying why some children struggled to learn to read. The program uses a problem-solving approach to develop students’ understanding of how the English alphabet system works. This understanding enhances students’ decoding and spelling ability and is a precursor to the Spelling Program used in Years 4-6.
The core of this program is explicit teaching, to distinguish each sound first, using pictures, and then attaching a letter or letters to that sound. It is essential in Prep that students learn to identify, discriminate, blend and manipulate sounds. A different sound is focused on each week from Prep to Year 3 and regular assessment occurs to track student progress.
All parents and carers are invited to an after-school Information Session on our Right Brain Decoding and Phonics program in Week 4 on Monday, 10 May at 3:10 pm in the LEAP room. Please phone the school office to leave your name if you are interested in attending.

Welcome back for Term 2.
This term we have lots of activities and challenges which aim to encourage students to participate in regular reading. We hope that everyone takes up the challenge to join in with as many of these activities as they can.
Just a reminder that many students now have overdue books due to the lock down which occurred at the end of Term 1. Please return these overdue books as soon as possible.

The 10th of May marks the beginning of the reading period for the 20201 Premier’s Reading Challenge. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books.
Students will be given more information about participation in the Premier’s Reading Challenge during their Library time.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Students in all year levels are welcome to join in with the 21st annual National Simultaneous Storytime event on the 19th of May. This year’s book, “Give Me Some Space”, will be read live at 11.00 am by an astronaut on the International Space Station.

Book Fair is on the way!

Acrobatics
One of our Year 6 students, Hollie has been selected it into the Queensland the Queensland team for Acrobatics. Her National competition will be in mid-May and so we wish her all the best representing Queesland!
Little Athletics State Success!
One of our Dayboro students, Heidi, has had some recent success at the Qld Little Athletics State Championships in March achieving a state bronze medal for the Under 9 category in high jump.
Heidi qualified to compete in four Under 9 girls’ events - high jump, long jump, 400m and 100m sprints. Heidi ran personal best times in both of her races and had a great time meeting and competing with other athletes from all over Queensland. I am sure that you will join me in wishing Heidi congratulations on a great achievement!
Well Done Heidi
DISTRICT RUGBY LEAGUE SELECTIONS
Congratulations to Regan and Kade for being selected for our District Rugby League team to play in the Regional Carnival in April.
We wish these boys every success at this next level.
What a fantastic vacation care we have just had. Our children enjoyed a striking day at tenpin bowling and were challenged at our rock climbing and parkour excursion. Children showed enormous levels of encouragement towards each other as fears were conquered for some children. We had some exciting theme days and incursions, encouraging and developing creativity, cooking skills and learning about Indian culture. We are already beginning planning for the winter holidays, so stay tuned for details and consider enrolling your child so you can book in when bookings open.
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iParent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings. Failure to notify us of absences in after school care means educators are having to search for children and a no show fee may be applied to your account. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Vacancies are available for both morning and afternoon sessions on selected days, and we welcome all children and families to the service. To enrol your child, please visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, selecting Dayboro as your service and following the prompts to access the iParent Portal. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.
