A Successful Term 1!

What an amazing term 1 we have had at Dayboro State school we have:

• Transitioned 54 Prep students into school successfully
• Our students learned how to use financial literacy in our Start Smart sessions
• Welcomed everyone to belong to our community through Harmony Day
• Said NO to bullying on the National Day of Action
• Had several students represent Dayboro State School at district trials
• Taught, learned and assessed our Term 1 units of work in all key learning areas

In this last week and a half, we will also have:

• Completed the Year 3/4 Swimming program
• Our Year 5/6 students participate in their first Gala Day
• All students participating in the cross-country carnival
• Our Prep-Year 2 students march through the town centre with their Easter hats and perform their Easter songs to parents and carers

Thank you to all of our staff who have contributed to make this a great place to learn and grow. Our teachers have worked tirelessly to settle our new classes and continue the learning, all the while being mindful of stretching each student just that little bit more. I look forward to continuing in the role of Principal in Term 2 and I can’t wait to see how much further we can grow as a school community.

ANZAC Day Services Term 2

In week 1 of term 2, we will commemorate ANZAC Day at Dayboro State School with a formal service on Friday 23 April at 9:15am. We will welcome special guest Richard Hawkins. If you would like to invite any interested community members, please contact our administration team via email admin@dayboross.eq.edu.au. All parents and carers are of course welcome to attend and we will consider our Covid requirements.

On ANZAC Day, Sunday 25 April, we will of course also participate in the community march and service. Please consider supporting our march. All students are welcome and should meet Mrs Ryan and myself, in full school formal uniform, on the footpath outside the Dayboro Hotel at 9:20am. Once we complete our march at the showgrounds, parents and carers will need to collect their children. The School Captains will attend the 10am ceremony and lay a wreath on behalf of our Dayboro School community. We look forward to seeing you there to commemorate this very special occasion.

We want your views

Last fortnight, I asked for feedback on our new Dayboro State School Student Code of Conduct. This document, written by staff, is currently under advisement and awaiting endorsement of the P&C.  If you would like to view this document, which has been placed on our website, please follow the link:

On Thursday 25th March from 2:30-3:00pm, we will hold our final parent forum for feedback on this document. After consultation, our hard-working P&C executive members will discuss with a view to finalising the endorsement of the Student Code of Conduct 2021-2023.

NAPLAN Practice Testing begins

This week, Wednesday 24^th March and Thursday 25^th March, our current Year 3 and Year 5 students will be preparing for NAPLAN ONLINE testing through practice sessions being held in our Resource Centre. They will be using an online NAPLAN platform and will be doing simulated NAPLAN activities, similar to the real test.

Parents are advised that any data collected as part of this practice testing does NOT form part of any assessment for individual students. It is purely an opportunity for students to become familiar with the process before they sit the real NAPLAN ONLINE testing in May.

 Bullying No Way! 

 

What is bullying?

Bullying is when someone:

• keeps picking on you again and again and tries to make you feel bad
• says or does lots of mean things that upset you
• makes fun of you a lot
• tries to stop you from joining in or make others not like you
• keeps hurting you such as hitting or punching you.

 Bullying feels awful. You feel like you can’t stop it.

Bullying can happen in person or online.

It might be something people can see or it might be hidden.

Sometimes you might have a fight or argument with someone.

If it happens once, it is not bullying even though it can be upsetting.

It is also not bullying if you sometimes fight with a friend and you can sort it out.

Bullying is not OK. Every child has the right to feel safe.

  

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent teacher interviews here at Dayboro have begun!  They will continue over the next two weeks. Thank you to those parents who have already organised their times and attended their interviews. Our teachers go to a lot of effort to prepare for these interviews and look forward to sharing the progress of every child in their class, so it is important that all parents take the opportunity to attend.

Parent-teacher interviews at primary school: what to expect

Throughout your child’s time in primary school, you might be asked to attend parent-teacher interviews, or conferences, usually once or twice a year.

These interviews are usually just short meetings – about 10-15 minutes – between you and your child’s teacher or teachers. Every parent is invited to attend at least one interview a year. Being invited to a parent-teacher interview doesn’t mean there’s a problem with your child’s progress.

Interviews might be held during school hours, before or after school, or in the evening. It’s good to make a time when both parents can go along, if you can. If you can’t manage any of the available times, you could call the school to arrange another time.

It’s important to be on time for parent-teacher interviews. But be aware that teachers might be running late because previous interviews have run over time.

Why it’s worth going to parent-teacher interviews

Parent-teacher interviews give you a great opportunity to:

• learn more about your child’s academic, emotional and social development
• meet and get to know your child’s teachers
• help your child’s teachers understand more about your child
• make plans with the teacher about how you can both support your child
• build a relationship with your child’s school

If you don’t have any particular concerns, you might wonder whether it’s worth going to parent-teacher interviews. But going along is one way to show your children that you’re interested in their learning and what’s happening for them at school.

Of course, if you do have concerns, it’s a chance for you to raise them with your child’s teacher if you haven’t done that already.

Response to Instruction and Intervention (RTII)

Response to Instruction and Intervention is a framework for teaching and learning. Helping students succeed is the fundamental mission of our work at Dayboro State School and Response to Instruction and Intervention is a significant priority towards that end. Now in its sixth year of implementation, RTII is a signature way of working at our school.

Parents may be familiar with Tier 2 and Tier 3 Intervention and Extension notes that may come home with some students at the beginning of each term indicating that extra support, or extension, is being provided for their child by the class teacher or a specialist teacher. This is part of our whole school approach to providing high quality, differentiated instruction for all students, with careful monitoring of their progress, and then the provision of small group, or individual, support or extension in Literacy or Numeracy for those students who may need it.

EASTER RAFFLE  

Thank you to everyone for all the generous donations of chocolates and other great items for the Easter Raffle! There are going to be some very happy winners next week!

MOTHERS DAY STALL

Planning is under-way for the upcoming Mother’s Day Stall! Anticipated date is Friday 7^th May.

A special P&C meeting will be held at 6:30pm Monday 29^th March (via Teams) to discuss what needs to be done and how the day will flow for our students, teachers and parent volunteers. We would be super-excited to have parents involved in helping with gift preparations as well as volunteering to be hands-on support on the day. TUCKSHOP - HARMONY DAY

Last Wednesday was a massive day in the tuckshop with delicious nacho’s and butter chickens putting a smile on everyone’s face! A big shout out of thanks to Alison, our wonderful volunteers and teacher aides who pulled together to feed everyone! A huge effort on the day and leading up to it, so a second thanks Alison and any who may have helped.

Library

We are now in the last two weeks of the term.  Please ensure all overdue books are returned to the Library before the school holidays.

Maker Space

Robots of all kinds have continued to be a popular choice for students in the maker space during their breaks.

The blue Dash robots can be controlled using Blockly Code or with the use of track pad for younger students.  One of the attachments used with the Dash robots over the last two weeks was the ball launcher – trying to code the launcher to get the ping pong balls to the desired landing point in much trickier than it looks!

Well done to our Lego robotics enthusiasts who participated in a RoboCoast event on the 11^th of March.  The first thing all of the students had to learn was how to code their robots.  During the day the teams of students participated in a Sumo challenge and a line follower challenge.  Both challenges required students to code their robots to make use of their light sensor.

Book Fair

Book Fair is on the way! 

Book Fair is set to begin on May 7^th and will run until May 12^th. 

Keep an eye out for further information coming home after the school holidays.  In the meantime families are more able to preview some of the exciting books that will be available at Book Fair.

We have been very busy over the last fortnight planting various seedlings and seeds. Children are excited to watch them grow and use some of the vegetables and herbs in our cooking. A big thankyou to Miss Jenny’s husband Jason for sparing his time to construct fencing around our patches to keep them safe. 

We are halfway through MoovMarch and it has been exciting to watch the children’s coordination skills develop as well as teamwork skills. Each week, we have a moover of the week; this is someone who has consistently demonstrated a positive attitude, teamwork skills and developments in their ability to execute the focus skill of the week. Week one, our recipient was Imogen. T. Week two went to Xavier. C, and this past week Marcus. M was awarded our moover of the week. Many of our children have or are close to earning their purple pins, with a few working towards receiving their gold pin at the end of March.

Vacation care bookings are open for families to log in and secure bookings. Excursions these holidays will be tenpin bowling and a rock climbing day.

If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
