Every Student Succeeding
Our Dayboro school community is committed to every student succeeding with a specific focus in 2021 on our Explicit Improvement Agenda (EIA) – Lifting student achievement and engagement through targeted teaching and explicit feedback. A range of strategies are outlined in our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP), endorsed by our P&C and now added to our school website.
Our Deputy Principal, Karen Ryan, and myself have been visiting classrooms and supporting our teachers by identifying ways to enhance and complement our teaching and learning. It has been wonderful to see the students’ engagement in their learning and our teachers working hard to implement effective pedagogies. We have been also asking the students about their learning using the following five questions from Lyn Sharratt’s research, Clarity:
- What are you learning?
- How are you going?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where do you go for help?
From the students’ answers, we can plan where we need as a staff to support our students’ learning. We are so lucky at Dayboro SS to have committed teachers who are open about sharing best practice. Teachers are now visiting each other’s classrooms to watch each other work and learn collaboratively. We want our students to be successful!

We want your views!
There are two initiatives on which we would love your feedback:
Our Student Code of Conduct is a policy that we have recently written to guide our student discipline procedures at Dayboro State School. It is almost ready for publication. Therefore, I would like to invite you to attend two feedback sessions, on Thursday 18 March and Thursday 25 March from 2-3pm. The initial session will be a walk through the document with feedback welcome in the second session. Once we have finalised consultation, we will be ready to publish our Student Code of Conduct.
Last night at the P&C, I outlined the initial plans for the playground upgrade, with the funding Nikki Boyd was able to secure for Dayboro SS in 2020. I agreed to publish, the initial ideas with the hope of seeking parent feedback. If you would like to provide feedback, please send your ideas to admin@dayboross.eq.edu.au. Playground ideas:
Initial Playground ideas have been sent to Project Officer. We will now seek some possible designs from some playground contractors to see what is possible and involve the students to have a voice.
Year 4, 5 and 6 Playground (near fig tree):
- Consider access adjacent to the fig tree amphitheatre. There should be better access as the ramp will lead onto this deck from the current path
- Investigate some options to level out the two areas – where the current playground is and the bordered area next to this
- Extend on the equipment currently in the playground – ideas include perhaps a ninja course suitable for this age group?
- Provide a Softfall base (not bark as that keeps washing away)
Year 2 and 3 Playground (if funds allow)
- Use the section from the centre (this area is currently too high to access for any of the students), towards the toilet block as a new sandpit area for the younger children. Would also like to include a ‘dirt track’ for the car play. The structure should allow for this area to be shaded
Gardening (we have applied for a grant)
- Current planter boxes to be relocated so that all the gardening is in the one area (this area has not been selected yet)
- Compost to be continued in new gardening area
- Gardening has become popular amongst the students again
If you have any wonderful, innovative ideas for our playground upgrade, please let me know.

Dear Families and Friends
Representing your school with pride
Over this term we have had lots of occasions when children have been outside of our school participating in events such as District Sports, STEM Visits to PRHS, Robo Cup, Swimming Lessons, Student Leader events and coming up soon… Gala Day for Years 5 and 6.
Whenever we go to sporting events, instrumental/choir performances, Extension Days or are just out and about in the community, our students are expected to represent their school with pride. This is an important part of being RESPECTFUL. This expectation can be shown in many different ways, from wearing the correct uniform to being considerate of others in the community. The feeling we get when someone outside of our school says, “Wow! Those Dayboro kids are really well-mannered” or “I am really impressed with their behaviour”, is really encouraging and something to be celebrated.
A few ways you can encourage your child to represent their school with pride is:
- ensuring they are wearing the correct uniform and it’s neat and tidy;
- discussing behaviours that are appropriate when out in the community;
- role-playing scenarios of interactions with others; and
- talking positively with your child about their school experiences and encouraging them to talk and think positively about their school.
Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of your children and equip them with the skills to BE RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, POSITIVE, PROUD AND TOLERANT citizens.
Please remember that children are expected to wait in the CSA before School between 8:15am until the bell goes at 8:40am. The children are supervised during this time. There should not be children playing on equipment or waiting outside classrooms before this time.
Parents are reminded that dropping and picking up children in the bus zone is not permitted. That area is extremely busy and congested with buses coming and going and it is an important safety issue. We do not want any of our children getting hurt. Thank you for keeping our children safe.
SWIMMING – Years 3 and 4.
Swimming has started this term for Yr. 3 and 4 students at the Dayboro pool. Classes 3P, 3/4M, 4B and 4R have been swimming from Week 5 until Week 9. The children have got off to a great start. Thank you parents for supporting this program and for making prompt payments and returning permission slips on time.
Date Claimers
Thank you Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Term 1 Parent Teacher Meetings
At Dayboro State school parents are invited to meet with their children’s teachers twice yearly to discuss student progress. Parent-teacher meetings help parents and teachers find ways to work together to ensure every student’s success at school.
The teacher will probably show parents some samples of their child's work, and may discuss their child's progress, marks, homework and behaviour. The teacher may also ask parents about any concerns that they have about a student and discuss any extra support, or extension, programs being provided for that student. The meeting is also an opportunity for parents to ask questions about their child's progress and to find out if their child is having difficulty with anything in particular.
Some suggestions to ensure a positive and successful parent-teacher meeting may include:
- Talk with your child about how school is going for them before the meeting
- Prepare a few notes/ questions about what you’d like to discuss with the teacher
- Be on time and stay calm
- Ask for explanations of anything you don't understand
- Respectfully discuss differences of opinion
- Create an action plan
- After the meeting, talk about the conference with your child. Emphasize the positive points, and be direct about problems that were discussed. If you and the teacher created an action plan, explain it to your child. Make sure that your child understands that you and the teacher created this plan to help them. Keep in touch with the teacher.
If you need to, further meetings can be organised with the teacher. At Dayboro we know that teachers and parents working together as a team enhances the chances of school being a happy and successful learning environment for everyone.
Regards, Linda Smith

These times are approximate. The day may run earlier or later than expected. Parents are welcome to attend but I urge you to arrive early to watch your child’s race, rather than risk missing it.
This year students age 9-12yrs will be offered the choice to either run the full 2-3km distance asked of their age or a single lap 1km Fun Run. The 2-3km distance will be timed, ribbons awarded and times may lead to attendance at the District Cross Country for 10-12yrs. The Fun Run will not be timed, there will be no ribbons but all runners will earn points for their house for participating and giving it a go.
Students in Yr P-2 will receive stickers for participating and earn house points for their team.
On The Day
Family members and friends are welcome to come and cheer on their child/ren during their races. We ask that you respect social distancing requirements and use hand sanitiser.
Students need to come to school prepared with:
House shirt and shorts
Appropriate footwear
Sunscreen
School sun safe hat (students do not have to run in their hats but they must wear them when not racing)
Plenty of water and food.
Helpers
I will need parent helpers on the day to supervise a section of the course. I will rotate you around so that you do not miss any of the action. Please email me on cxmar5@eq.edu.au if you are willing to help.
General PE Notes
No Dresses for PE please:
All students have Health and Physical Education lessons on Monday or Tuesday. Please ensure your child is appropriately attired in shorts or skorts. Dresses hinder physical activity and often children are unable to participate fully while maintaining dignity. Thankyou,

News from the 4B Classroom
The 4B students have enjoyed being budding geologists by exploring natural processes and human activity that cause weathering and erosion of the Earth's surface. We have been examining and classifying different types of rocks and soils, and have identified areas of erosion in our school. Now its time to come up with some solutions to the problems.

Library

Last Thursday we celebrated World Book Day. Since we are unable to travel the world at the moment, we aimed to bring the world to our students by showcasing books in our display that told the story of people from different places around the world. This year’s theme was “Share a Story” and we hope that everyone had a chance to share a story with someone special.
Maker Space
We have a team of ten Year 5 students attending a robotics day at Undurba State School on Thursday this week. They will be learning how to code our new LEGO SPIKE Prime robots and have been busy building their robots in preparation for the day. We can’t wait for them to come back to school to share their new knowledge with other keen robotic enthusiasts.

Makerspace has been jam packed with builders and inventors over the last few weeks. The breadth of their inventiveness is amazing. We would also like to say a very big “Thank you” to our STEAM Team students (Year 6 students who volunteer their time to help in the Makers Space during first break). Their help over the last couple of weeks, especially with some of the robotics challenges, has been invaluable!

We are currently in need of cardboard boxes for the maker space. The boxes we are searching for need to be made from a cardboard thin enough for students to be able to cut – cereal boxes, muesli bar boxes, toothpaste tube boxes, etc are ideal. All donations are happily accepted. Please be aware that we are unable to accept donations of egg cartons due to egg allergies.
Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
- Online
Visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
- In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please come and see one of the friendly School Banking Co-ordinators on Monday mornings in the Tuckshop at 9am or enquire at the Office.
Over the last fortnight we have been busy re-introducing clubs for children to participate in. This term the clubs we have on offer are:
Monday: Sustainability club with Miss Jenny and Miss Mele (After School)
Tuesday: MoovMarch with Miss Katie (After School), Art Club with Miss Jenny (Before and After School)
Wednesday: Junior Masterchef Club with Miss Jenny (After School)

Please see Miss Jenny or Miss Katie if you would like your child to be involved in these clubs. A reminder that these clubs are at no extra charge to families, however standard session fees apply. Children will need to be enrolled and booked into the sessions to participate. We also have homework club on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 4:00-4:20pm.
Our first week of MoovMarch was a great success, with children enjoying various games. Some of the games were familiar to children while others were new games. It was great to see the children embrace teamwork and enthusiasm for participating to aim for either purple or gold pins and stickers.
Activity of the fortnight: Volcano experiment. Children very much enjoyed this activity and exploring the results of chemical mixtures. Keep an eye out for what we will be up to over the next fortnight.
If your child/ren will be absent from a session, please ensure they are marked absent on the iparent portal. This is done under the bookings tab by selecting the date/session and clicking the red x on the right. Please see one of our educators for support if you are experiencing issues making or managing your bookings. A reminder that bookings with less than 24hrs will need to be made via contacting the service on 0459 991 697.
Vacancies are available for both morning and afternoon sessions on selected days, and we welcome all children and families to the service. To enrol your child, please visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, selecting Dayboro as your service and following the prompts to access the iParent Portal.
