Principal's News

Every Student Succeeding

Our Dayboro school community is committed to every student succeeding with a specific focus in 2021 on our Explicit Improvement Agenda (EIA) – Lifting student achievement and engagement through targeted teaching and explicit feedback. A range of strategies are outlined in our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP), endorsed by our P&C and now added to our school website.

Our Deputy Principal, Karen Ryan, and myself have been visiting classrooms and supporting our teachers by identifying ways to enhance and complement our teaching and learning. It has been wonderful to see the students’ engagement in their learning and our teachers working hard to implement effective pedagogies. We have been also asking the students about their learning using the following five questions from Lyn Sharratt’s research, Clarity:

  • What are you learning?
  • How are you going?
  • How do you know?
  • How can you improve?
  • Where do you go for help?

From the students’ answers, we can plan where we need as a staff to support our students’ learning. We are so lucky at Dayboro SS to have committed teachers who are open about sharing best practice. Teachers are now visiting each other’s classrooms to watch each other work and learn collaboratively. We want our students to be successful!

We want your views!

There are two initiatives on which we would love your feedback:

Our Student Code of Conduct is a policy that we have recently written to guide our student discipline procedures at Dayboro State School. It is almost ready for publication. Therefore, I would like to invite you to attend two feedback sessions, on Thursday 18 March and Thursday 25 March from 2-3pm. The initial session will be a walk through the document with feedback welcome in the second session. Once we have finalised consultation, we will be ready to publish our Student Code of Conduct.

Last night at the P&C, I outlined the initial plans for the playground upgrade, with the funding Nikki Boyd was able to secure for Dayboro SS in 2020. I agreed to publish, the initial ideas with the hope of seeking parent feedback. If you would like to provide feedback, please send your ideas to admin@dayboross.eq.edu.au. Playground ideas:

Initial Playground ideas have been sent to Project Officer. We will now seek some possible designs from some playground contractors to see what is possible and involve the students to have a voice.

Year 4, 5 and 6 Playground (near fig tree):

  • Consider access adjacent to the fig tree amphitheatre. There should be better access as the ramp will lead onto this deck from the current path

  • Investigate some options to level out the two areas – where the current playground is and the bordered area next to this
  • Extend on the equipment currently in the playground – ideas include perhaps a ninja course suitable for this age group?
  • Provide a Softfall base (not bark as that keeps washing away)

Year 2 and 3 Playground (if funds allow)

  • Use the section from the centre (this area is currently too high to access for any of the students), towards the toilet block as a new sandpit area for the younger children. Would also like to include a ‘dirt track’ for the car play. The structure should allow for this area to be shaded

Gardening (we have applied for a grant)

  • Current planter boxes to be relocated so that all the gardening is in the one area (this area has not been selected yet)
  • Compost to be continued in new gardening area
  • Gardening has become popular amongst the students again

If you have any wonderful, innovative ideas for our playground upgrade, please let me know.

P & C AGM

Last night Karen Ryan and I had the pleasure to attend the Dayboro State School P&C AGM. Firstly, I would like to thank all of the P&C Members from 2020 for their contributions of time and effort. We know that these roles require an enormous amount of hard work and commitment!

Last night we welcomed the new P&C role holders for 2021:

President – Mareeta White

Vice President - Rechelle Bullas

Secretary – Mia Gillies

Treasurer – Joanna Herricane

Technical Support Officer – Nathan Oldfield

Book Club coordinator – Cara Diak

Banking Coordinator – Mary Zuvela

Uniform Shop Coordinator – Karen Hockings

Thank you to these parents for volunteering for these roles and also to the other P&C members for your valuable contributions. 2021 is going to be an exciting year!

Have a great week!
