Dear Parents and Caregivers
This week represents the half way point of the term and five weeks remaining of the school year. On assembly yesterday students were reminded about the need to remain focussed and committed to the school rules of Safety, Respect and Learning as we enter a very busy time of the school year. At Dayboro, our objective is for every student to fulfil the school year in a positive way, even though the ensuing heat and tiredness can bring challenges to some. Parents can assist us by reinforcing with every student that a conscientious effort in school work and behaviour is necessary until the very last day of school. Let’s remain proactive as a school community and enjoy the final few weeks of another great year at Dayboro.

Dear Families and Friends
Over these last few weeks, the children and teachers have been very busy working hard on completing assessment tasks, checking in on reading and spelling growth and finishing assignments but most importantly they have been reflecting on and celebrating a year of wonderful learning achievements, in spite of the challenges we faced in 2020. While many children embrace the chance to show their teacher how much they have learnt and are easily able to reflect on their successes and challenges, some children may feel a little overwhelmed at this time of year with all the expectations they feel they need to meet. But…..
We can help our children to navigate these challenges through helping to instil in them a “Growth” mindset.
Below are 6 tips for promoting a “growth mindset” in children.
- Help children understand that the brain works like a muscle, that can only grow through hard work, determination and lots and lots of practice.
- Don’t tell students they are smart, gifted or talented since this implies they were born with the knowledge, and does not encourage effort and growth.
- Let children know when they demonstrate a growth mindset. “I can always improve so I’ll keep trying.”
- Praise the process. It’s effort, hard work and practice that allow children to achieve their true potential.
- Embrace mistakes and challenges. Children sometimes learn the most when they make mistakes. Let them know they are a big part of the learning process. There is nothing like the feeling of struggling through a very difficult problem, only to finally break through and solve it.
- Encourage participation and collaborative group learning. Children learn best when they are immersed in a topic and allowed to discuss and learn with their peers.

YEAR 6 CAMP
Next week our Yr. 6 students head off to camp at Camp Coolum Luther Heights. They leave on Tuesday and return on Friday. We wish them all a safe and adventurous week of fun, friendship and flying foxes! We hope they make the most of this chance to develop new friendships and to cement lasting bonds before they leave for High School next year. What a great way to finish the year!
Below is an informative article about the benefits of school camps and how important they are in developing life-long learning skills in our students.
School camp is a fantastic opportunity for children to develop new skills, friendships and interests. However, for many kids (and their parents!) just the thought of sleeping away from home can provoke high anxiety.
Some of the common worries about camp include:
- Not being able to sleep properly
- Not liking the food camp will offer
- Who they will be sharing a cabin with
- Not enjoying the activities the camp will offer
- Feeling homesick
Although these are understandable concerns, it is important to help kids feel more positive about camp and to overcome the fear of not enjoying camp.
The benefits of school camp are numerous, here are my top five:
- Development of social skills
School camp is a great opportunity to develop a range of social skills. Most activities at camp involve team work, which is great to strengthen established friendships and also to develop new friendships by connecting with children they don’t regularly talk with at school.
Through bonding activities, children develop supportive relationships not only with different children, but also with their teachers. At camp, children have the opportunity to learn about acceptance, caring and understanding.
- Development of independence skills
For many children school camp is their first time away from family and home for a few nights. Parents are not there to remind their kids to eat their vegetables, brush their teeth, or to have a shower. Therefore, this is a great opportunity for kids to grow up by learning how take care of themselves and to do things on their own. Most kids do rise to the challenge and learn to rely on themselves when they spend time away home.
- Development of decision-making skills
Should I go with my friends or should I do the activity I really want to do? Should I have the third slice of pizza? Should I stay up or go to bed? Supervising teachers are not able to hover over each child all the time, so at camp, children are responsible for making more of their own choices.
- Increased environmental awareness
During camp, children are exposed to authentic nature-based experiences. Hands-on activities in the outdoors stimulate all senses and facilitate learning. Children become more aware of the environment, develop outdoor skills and appreciation for nature.
- Learning new skills
At school camp, children will be exposed to a range of activities that they may not have tried before. When away from their parents, children are often more adventurous and willing to try new things.

PREP ORIENTATION MORNING
Now that the days are starting to get warmer please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during play times and PE lessons. The rule is “No Hat, no Play!”
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.

Writing Success at Dayboro State School
Writing is becoming fun again at Dayboro State School. There was great interest, and an avalanche of entries, in last term’s Writing competition on the theme ‘Treasure’. You may also have heard your children talking about ‘Sizzling Starts’ or ‘Ban the Boring’, two important skills of effective writers. These are part of a toolbox of strategies teachers have been embedding in Writing lessons as we seek to renew student enthusiasm, creativity and competency in the craft of writing. Teachers use Modelled, Shared, Guided and Independent Writing to structure their lessons and encourage students to set individual learning goals, and then reflect on their writing progress. Ask your child to tell you how ‘Dynamic Dialogue’ and ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ improves the quality of their writing. What are your child’s learning goals for Writing this term?

This week students have been making use of Sphero robots in maker space. Once students mastered the ability to operate their robots they were encouraged to undertake one of the challenges. One task was to work as a team while operating their robots to play a game of soccer, but the most popular task was to operate a robot in the “Sphero skate park”. We think it may be a fun idea to design skate park elements for our Spheros using 3D design software and then print these out for our robots to use. Watch this space…
Craft activities were also a popular activity this week. It was fantastic to see so many our older students, including our STEAM Team members, helping younger students to design and construct their own pom pom popper.
Students in 4/5H have been working on a Lego robotics coding challenge in their Digital Technologies lessons and have been making use of every available lunch time to optimise their robot design and their coding. The class competition is scheduled for Wednesday – we can’t wait to see who wins!

Book Club
Brochures for the final issue of Book Club for 2020 were distributed to students on Friday.
Orders for this issue close on Wednesday the 18th of November. Orders can be dropped off at the office or can be made on-line via LOOP.
Thank you for you continued support,
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
Dads Day at Tuckshop If there’s one thing dads know well, it’s how to fire up and cook a great BBQ feast! The day was a huge success with loads of sausages and other tasty food putting smiles on faces. Not only did the children enjoy the fizzy drinks and cupcakes, the men enjoyed the opportunity to get away from their normal 9-5pm jobs. Win-win! Thanks, gentlemen, for sharing your time and skills. We hope to see you more often!
Volunteers Needed Volunteers are desperately needed for Tuckshop, especially on Wednesdays! If you can spare a few hours to lend a hand, your time would be greatly appreciated. Without volunteers, our tuckshop would simply not be able to open, leaving our children unable to access such a valuable service. For 2021, we are also now seeking volunteers to join our recurring monthly roster. Just one day a month is all that’s needed. A great opportunity to give back to the school, see lots of smiling faces and catch up with or make new friends. Please contact Alison Taylor on tuckshop@dayboropandc.org.au
Uniforms The P&C is currently locking down dates to open the Uniform Shop for parents between now and the new school year. These days are often a great opportunity to check sizing so we will share those dates as soon as they’re confirmed. Orders can still be emailed through as per the current process. Uniform Pricelist and Order Form
School Fun Run I had the pleasure of announcing the winner for the Highest Fundraising Class at last weeks assembly. Well done to Class 4/5H and to all students and family who contributed! Individual prizes ordered online should be arriving in the next two weeks and will be distributed to students by their teachers.
Next P&C Meeting will be at 6:30pm, 9 November by MS Teams. If you would like to join us, please email Mia at Secretary@dayboropandc.org.au
Thanks
