Dear Parents and Caregivers
As this is the last newsletter for the term, I would like to take the opportunity to thank our entire school community for your support and cooperation as we have adapted to a new way of working this term. Although there have been some casualties in terms of school events, we have still managed to maintain our unrelenting focus on learning and achievement and still provide activities which have been possible under the COVID restrictions. From all accounts, our way of operating will continue through to the end of the school year.
Could I take the opportunity below to provide some information about school events, so that planning can take place for families:
- Colour Fun Run – this is scheduled for next Friday 18 September from 1.15pm onwards on our school oval. Please note that due to COVID restrictions, parents are not able to attend this event. This is a free dress day and students are invited to wear their white t-shirt ( or other casual shirt) to school on the day in readiness for the activity. We encourage every student to also bring a change of clothes in their bag after the event, in case a change is necessary before travelling on buses. The colour run mixture is corn starch and colourings- please advise your child’s classroom teacher if there are any concerns about participation. Participation is not compulsory, but is designed to be a fun course of obstacles and challenges to celebrate the last day of term.
- School Photos – MSP photography will be here on Monday 19 October ( Week 3) for school photos. Please look out for photo envelopes which will be forwarded home as soon as they are available.
- Year 5 and Year 6 Camps – Both camps are going ahead as COVID-Safe plans are available. Invoices have been issued for both camps. Please contact the school office if any information about payments or payment plans is required.
- Book Week – We will be celebrating Book Week from 19-23 October – the theme is “Curious Creatures”. The Book Week parade will be held on Wednesday 21 October on the school oval. The Meerkats theatre team will be doing a presentation at our school on Thursday 22 October – look out for details early next term.
- Swimming Carnivals – The Senior Swimming Carnival has been booked for Tuesday 24 November and the Junior Swimming Carnival has been booked for Friday 27 November. More details will be provided at a later time with the event falling under the COVID-Safe plan of Belgravia Leisure who operate the local pool.
- Year 6 Graduation – We are planning a celebratory event for our graduating Year 6 cohort based upon COVID–safe principles. We will know in the first few weeks of Term 4 how this event will be conducted and information will be provided to families at this time.
I hope the above information is of assistance in planning for these activities and events. Details about parent involvement or attendance at these events will be provided closer to the date and will be in line with the latest advice by the Queensland Chief Medical officer. Please keep up to date via our school Facebook Page as updates become available.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Thank you to the high number of parents/caregivers who have attended the school or had a telephone interview about your child/ren’s progress in recent weeks. Our official interview period continues until the end of the term. If you haven’t made a booking for an interview and still wish to make contact with a teacher, please contact them as soon as possible.
To be COVID-Safe, please ensure that when visiting the school that all required protocols are carried out, as advised by the individual teachers.
Movie and TV Free Dress Day Success
This was perhaps one of the most successful free dress days we have had at Dayboro with so many children and teachers engaging with the theme. I am happy to report that around $350 was raised and has been sent to Anglicare to support youth homelessness in our community. Thank you to everyone for your support of this Student Council initiative.
School Holidays and Public Holiday
The spring school holidays commence next Friday 18 September and students return for Term 4 on Tuesday 6 October. Monday 5 October is a public holiday for the Queen’s Birthday.
Prep Enrolment Information and Interviews
Please ensure that enrolments packs for Prep for 2021 are received by our school office by Friday 18 September to assist with planning for the new school year.
Our Prep Interviews are being held between 19-23 October. Please organise a time with the school office if this has not already been done. An orientation day has been organised for Tuesday 10 November and will be followed up by morning visits on 16/23/30 November.

Dear Families and Friends
SUPPORT STAFF WEEK 7-11 September
This week is an opportunity to acknowledge the work done by all our school support staff to help facilitate teaching and learning in our school. Education doesn’t happen without them! In particular, we acknowledge all the wonderful work our cleaners- Gav, Sel, Marlene and Mary (especially during COVD times), our Admin/ Office ladies, Kay and Jill, our Grounds Officer George, our IT support person, Brett and our Business Manager, Kylie do. We also want to say a BIG thank you to our hard working and dedicated teacher aides who go above and beyond to support the staff and students at Dayboro.
WRITING AT DAYBORO.
At Dayboro we value creative, authentic and engaging writing for a purpose. Our goal for 2019 has been to lift the engagement of our students in writing in all its’ forms and to celebrate successes in writing. Our teachers work hard to embed the teaching of high quality writing practices in their classrooms. Teachers meet regularly to discuss and share writing samples of students and it is pleasing to see our students working so diligently on their writing goals and becoming better writers!
Here are some examples of writing goals from students across our school.
“I am learning to add interesting noun groups to my narrative.”
“I am learning to write more complex and detailed sentences.”
“I am learning how to sequence steps correctly in my procedure/ recipe.”
“I am learning how to create mood in my narrative through effective use of similes and metaphors.”
Ask your child what their Writing goal is!

Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Invoices Due:
Students have been invoiced for the following activities:
Letters for the above activities have now been sent home, and students invoiced accordingly. If you have a credit on your child’s account (including siblings), you are able to use the credit for the above excursions/camps. To check the credit amount, please contact the school prior to making payment.
As the Year 5 Camp is more expensive than previous years (due to the smaller cohort), we are more than happy to provide a payment plan. Payment plans are available to all families, whether you are experiencing financial difficulties or you would prefer to pay in a lengthier timeframe. Payments must be made regularly, and must be completed by the 27th November 2020.
Payment Methods & How to Pay
Dayboro State School accepts and encourages the below payment methods:
- Qkr! by Masterpass.
This is a new payment option to our school, and we have been very excited to introduce to our parents! It is very simple and easy to use, just follow the steps of the below image.
Qkr! is used by many high schools, including our feeder high schools, so it is a great opportunity to begin using it.
- BPOINT
You can use BPOINT in two different ways:
- Clicking on the link on the invoice, which will take you directly to the BPOINT page.
- Payment by phone using credit/debit card via BPOINT: 1300 631 073
- In Person
You can still opt to pay in person. Please note, we encourage using EFTPOS over the use of Cash, particularly in this current climate. If you are choosing to use cash, please ensure it is the correct amount as our office does not hold cash on site for change.
If students are paying by cash, they are to bring it directly to the office and wait for a receipt – we no longer have the option for students to leave money in an envelope. At no time should a student give any money to classroom teachers for excursions, teachers will redirect them to the office to pay.

Kind regards,
Kylie McIntosh
Business Manager
It’s now less than two weeks to go until our Crazy Colour Day on the 18th September. Lots of students have been successfully using their profile pages to get the most out of the fundraiser and many are also raising funds offline. I’m sure they’re all excited about the incentive prizes and even more excited about the Colour Run fun they will soon be having!
We have exceeded our goal of $20,000 which is a fantastic achievement and a credit to all those who have been participating. There’s still 4 days left to fundraise, so if you are yet to create a page, it’s not too late!
We’ve set our money due back date as the 11th September 2020 so please make sure you’ve returned all your money to back to the school office by then.
On the day, make sure your children come dressed in the clothes they will be wearing for the Colour Run (including runners), have a bottle of water, sunscreen, and a change of clothes for after the event. This is especially important for those who may not be going straight home or are catching a school bus.
Let’s Colour My World
Special Tuckshop Day Wednesday 16th September 2020. The theme is all things colour and Colour Run!! Menus have been distributed to students and all orders are due back by 3pm for bag orders (to the tuckshop) or midnight for Flexischools this Friday 11th September.
Next P&C Meeting will be at 6:30pm 14th September by MS Teams. If you would like to join us, please email Mia at Secretary@dayboropandc.org.au
Thank you! to our Father’s Day Stall volunteers, school staff and students for a great day! I know my husband loved the many gifts our daughter bought for him on the day!
Your Tuckshop Needs You! We are in desperate need of additional volunteers for Tuckshop, especially on Wednesdays. If you can spare a day a month, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Mrs Taylor at tuckshop@dayboropandc.org.au

What parents can do at home to help your kids with Writing
-
Build a climate of words at home. Go places and see things with your child, then talk about what has been seen, heard, smelled, tasted, touched. The basis of good writing is good talk, and younger children especially grow into stronger control of language when loving adults — particularly parents — share experiences and rich talk about those experiences.
-
Let children see you write often. You’re both a model and a teacher. If children never see adults write, they gain an impression that writing occurs only at school. What you do is as important as what you say. Have children see you writing notes and emails to friends, letters to business firms, perhaps stories to share with the children.
-
Be as helpful as you can in helping children write. Talk through their ideas with them; help them discover what they want to say. When they ask for help with spelling, punctuation, and usage, supply that help. Your most effective role is not as a critic but as a helper. Rejoice in effort, delight in ideas, and resist the temptation to be critical.
-
Provide a suitable place for children to write. A quiet corner is best, the child’s own place, if possible. If not, any flat surface with elbow room, a comfortable chair, and a good light will do.
-
Give the child, and encourage others to give, the gifts associated with writing: pens, pencils, textas, erasers, diaries and journals
-
Praise the child’s efforts at writing. Forget what happened to you in school and resist the tendency to focus on errors of spelling, punctuation, and other mechanical aspects of writing. Emphasize the child’s successes.
-
Share letters and emails from friends and relatives. Treat such letters as special events. Urge relatives and friends to write notes and letters to the child, no matter how brief. Writing is especially rewarding when the child gets a response.
-
Be alert to occasions when the child can be involved in writing, for example, helping with grocery lists, adding to emails, sending holiday and birthday cards, writing messages, writing notes to friends, helping plan trips by writing for information, and preparing invitations to family get-togethers.

We are busily making preparations to host our regular annual Library events celebrating children’s literature. Already the Library is looking like a blizzard has swept through the building as we prepare for the upcoming “Arctic Adventure” themed Book Fair which will be held in the lead up to Book Week after the holiday break.
Ordinarily these events are held earlier in the year but were postponed this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Please keep an eye out for Facebook posts and notes coming home with students for more information about the events included below.
Digital Drawings
During last week we celebrated the 40th birthday of the children’s book “There’s a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake.”
Students in 1M and Prep/1 D used the computers to create pictures of some of the things the hippopotamus got up to in the story.

Book Fair is on its way!
Book Fair is scheduled to begin on October 9th (first week of Term 4).
Due to COVID restrictions Book Fair will be a little different this year. Unfortunately, at this stage parents will not be able to come along to Book Fair in person. In addition to the promotional brochure which will be sent home shortly, students will be able to peruse books available at the Book Fair and bring wish lists home to share with parents. We will also be posting pictures of the books available (with prices shown on the front cover of each book) via the P&C Facebook page.
Payment can be made on line (following the instructions on the brochure and on the rear of the wish lists), simply record receipt numbers on the wish list slips and clearly mark which book/s are being purchased. Cash payments can also be accepted at Book Fair.
Book Week
Usually Book Week celebrations occur in the last week in August, but this year Book Week runs from October 17 – 23.
This year’s theme is “Curious Creatures, Wild Minds” and some wonderful Australian children’s books have been nominated to win prizes through The Children’s Book Council of Australia.
Nominees for prizes in 2020 in the Early Childhood and Picture Book categories are shown below:

Our annual Book Week character costume parade is scheduled for October 21st at 9.00 a.m. Prizes for students in P-2 and Years 3-6 have generously been donated by the local Sheriff’s Fund.
Meerkats Performance

To help celebrate Book Week this year we have once again booked Meerkat Productions to entertain students from Prep – Year 6 with a dramatic performance of two of the books that have been nominated to receive awards during Book Week. Performances are scheduled for Thursday the 22nd of October.
Students in Years 3 – 6 will watch a dramatic performance of “The Little Wave” from 12.15 p.m. and students in Prep – Year 2 will enjoy a retelling of the story of a dog call “Three” from 1.50 p.m. Performances are being held later in the day this year to accommodate swimming lessons for the junior school. Admission is $10 per student. Please refer to the information note sent home on the 7th of September for more information.
Thank you for you continued support,
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
In between games of toilet tag, music mayhem, soccer and red rover, our children have been getting extremely creative. Our highlights with art and craft include balloon splat painting, firework painting and making your own scratch art. Children showed high levels of enthusiasm and creativity through these activities, and it was great to see peer collaboration between older and younger children to create their pieces of art.
A reminder to please ensure the gates into the service are closed after entering/departing. This is to ensure we remain compliant with National Regulations and keep all children in attendance safe. We thank you for your co-operation with this.
Due to COVID-19, we are continuing our sign in/sign out area outside of the service; this means adults are not permitted to enter the building. Families will be informed when this restriction has been lifted and we appreciate your patience with this.
Vacation care is coming around fast – we have two weeks of exciting activities planned to engage your children. Children will need to be enrolled prior to booking for these sessions and it is strongly encouraged that this is done as soon as possible to secure your spot. Please see below for how to enrol.
Would you like to join in our exciting morning and afternoon sessions? Vacancies are available for both morning and afternoon sessions and we welcome all children and families to the service. To enrol your child, please visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, selecting Dayboro as your service and following the prompts to access the iParent Portal. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.

Good Afternoon Everyone,
The school is commencing the recruitment and selection process for the 2021 Instrumental Music Program. The Instrumental Music Program is a wonderful opportunity for your child to learn a musical instrument through the school and to participate in the school Concert Band. As the program is popular and places are limited to the
teaching time allocated to the school by the region, entry into the program is by a selection process.
Limited places are available on the following instruments:
Over the coming weeks, students in Year 3 will get the chance to hear the band play, see and hear the instruments available.
A letter will be going home shortly asking for expressions of interest. If you and your child are interested in joining the program, please keep an eye out for this letter and make sure you return it by the due date.
For further information on the Instrumental Music Program at Dayboro SS, please contact Elisha Edwards through the school office.
Regards
Elisha
