The Teaching of Reading
Being our first Key Priority for 2025, we have heavily invested in the Teaching of Reading this year. Our teachers have been engaged in using explicit routines for word reading and having students apply this learning using carefully crafted reading and writing activities. I have written about opportunities for our staff to share practice amongst them.
On Thursday last week, we had staff from two other schools visit us to learn from our teaching staff. Leanne Anderson, Annette Cook and Kerry Cassell invited these colleagues into their classrooms to observe their explicit reading lessons and then observe their students applying their learning. The visiting teachers and school leaders were blown away by our students and the teaching practise here at Dayboro. Feedback comments included:
-Lessons were teacher led but students were extending the lesson.
-Morphology included in all year levels – explicitly explained.
-All students engaged in every lesson.
-Students involved in the learning. High participation.
-Review – teach – practise – apply very clear.
-Students were helping teach each other in ‘apply’ phase.
-Students could rely on help from their peers. Such curriculum driven conversations BY STUDENTS!
-Students had active roles in lessons.
-A nice balance between teachers facilitating and students driving.
Congratulations to our teachers and students for working so hard on their explicit reading routines and applying their learning. We are very proud of our progress.

Staffing news
Just catching up on some new staff who have joined us in terms 2 and 3:
Last term we were excited to recruit an Instrumental Music teacher, Brooke Reed. We have enjoyed having Brooke teaching our IM students, restarting our band, and looking already at opportunities for them to perform and be a part of extension opportunities.
In late term 2, we had Peta Andrews, our school Social Worker commence. Peta works with our inclusive support team, and provides a great service supporting students and families. If you see Peta around, say hi!
At the beginning of the term, we welcomed Nichole Anderson in the role of Business Manager. We have appreciated her ‘can-do’ attitude already. Nichole will work with us on Mondays and Tuesdays. Welcome Nichole!
This week we welcome Reece Weller as our new School’s Officer. Reece has already started tidying our grounds and learning the ropes. Being a local Dayboro resident, we are looking forward to including Reece into our DSS team.
I am sure that you will join us in giving all of our new staff a great Dayboro welcome!
School Review
This week we have had three members of the School Review team at our school to validate our work over the last term in conducting our school led review. Thank you to all of our students, staff and community members for speaking to these visitors so that we can celebrate what great things we do at Dayboro State School and also look for our improvement strategies to inform our next four year strategic plan and put into place to make our school the best that it can be fro our students, staff and families.
School Opinion Survey
A reminder that our 2025 School Opinion Survey is still open, and you can respond using the Invitations that have been emailed to Parents / Caregivers of any student at a state school. The surveys have been emailed directly from the School Opinion Survey Team. Please consider providing feedback for this 2025 school year.
Thanks for your help!
Celebrating student success!
We have had some students out and about in the community representing our school with pride! A group of our instrumental musicians were recently invited to attend the Intermediate Music Primary Workshop. They had a day full of instruction and working with other students and teachers from different schools. Great job everyone!

School Calendar
Please find attached our latest school calendar V5 to keep you informed of our term 3 events. It was disappointing last week to have our Junior Athletics Carnival postponed. We are pleased to announce that it will take place on 29 August. We have therefore moved our much loved French Day to 12 September so that all of our students can participate.
Have a great week!

Dear Families and Friends
JUNIOR ATHLETICS CARNIVAL FRIDAY 8th AUGUST- POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER
NEW DATE CLAIMER: Friday 29th August 9am

LEARNING in 2C THIS WEEK
It's hard to believe that we are nearly half-way through the term.
In English, the class has been working hard on their persuasive speaking about different settings. It has been great to see the children growing in confidence and exploring using features of voice to engage the audience.

In Maths we have been hands on, learning about multiplication and division strategies. We are developing our speed and accuracy with 2x 5x and 10x tables.

In Science we have been investigating Earths resources and how we can care for the environment. Today we made models of the water cycle to understand where water comes from.
Positive Behaviour for Learning- Focus for Week 5 and 6.
This week our Explicit Classroom focus is about Transitions and how to move safely and quickly within the classroom and moving around the school.
In the playgrounds, our focus will be on the area of Toilets and Transitions and the expectations around how to Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner in these areas.
Thank you from Mrs Ryan
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Friday 15th August 2025: COLOUR RUN IS COMING!
Get ready to get loud, get messy, and get moving—our bi-annual Dayboro State School Colour Run is back and bursting with excitement!
This isn’t just a run—it’s our biggest fundraiser of the year, and every colourful step helps us leap closer to our goals:
A brand-new playground for our kids to climb, laugh and play
And air conditioning for the school hall—because even learning deserves to be a breeze!
Whether you’re a student, parent, or community legend, we want YOU to be part of the fun. Mark your calendar, dust off your white shirts, and prepare to be showered in colour for a cause that counts!
Here is the link for the fundraising page:
On the day…….
Students
- You can wear your white t-shirt all day, but normal navy school shorts/skirts/long pants and closed in shoes are required.
- If you don’t want too much colour in your hair, we highly recommend wearing a hat during the run. We will have some glasses on hand to protect your eyes.
- If you are catching the bus home, don’t forget to bring a towel or a change of clothes so you don’t get all those lovely colours over the bus seats.
- ALL students are welcome to participate – let’s have some fun!
Parents
- If you would like to come and watch the fun, students will head up to the oval with their second break snacks and water bottles at 1pm. Below is a guideline on when each year level will run, however please remember that as with all these types of events, even the best plans can go a bit off track. Our Dayboro Music students did us proud this week at the IMPed Music Workshop!
On Tuesday, some of our Band students participated. These workshops are like “districts” for music, and our students shone brightly.
They showed fantastic focus, grew so much in their musicality, and represented our school beautifully. We couldn’t be prouder – well done, everyone!”

Book Week
It’s almost here! Book Week is next week and all students are invited to be a part of our celebration activities.
Our Character Costume Parade will be held on Wednesday the 20th of August from 9:15 a.m. on the oval.
Please remember that students in a book themed costume will have their names entered into a lucky draw for each class. One winner will be selected from each class to win a book prize.
We also have two competitions available for students to enter – a colouring in competition and a camper bus design competition. Prizes for upper school and lower school winners for these two competitions will be book vouchers to spend with Book Club. Students can visit the Library for more information and entry forms. Prizes will be presented during Book Week. Entries close this Friday.
Congratulations to the following students who have been drawn from the lucky draw over the last two weeks:
Laylah 5M
Archie 4L
We have Meerkat Productions returning this year to perform a live-action retelling of two of the books that have been nominated to win prizes during Book Week. This year’s performance date is Wednesday the 20th of August. This year’s books are “The Garden of Broken Things” for Prep – Year 3 students in the hall from 1.50 p.m. and “Small Acts” for Year 4 – Year 6 students in the hall from 12.15 p.m. We hope everyone can join us for these events.
Invoices for the $9.25 payment for students to attend these shows have now been sent to families.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge will end on August 22nd. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books. Reading record sheets are available from class teachers and from the Library. Once students have completed their reading requirements they will need to return their reading record sheets to their class teacher so that we can arrange certificates to acknowledge the students who have completed the challenge.
Congratulations to Rush House who are currently leading the interhouse reading competition by one book.
Book Club
Book Club for Term 3 is now open. Brochures for this issue of Book Club will be distributed to students as soon as they arrive and the catalogue can also be viewed online. In this issue you'll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. The books included in this issue span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests with prices starting at just $3.
It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to their class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/loop or by using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Alternatively, order forms with payment can be handed in at the school office. All orders placed through Book Club help to earn free reading books for the school library.
Orders are due Thursday the 4th of September.
