Connecting with Community!!!
We have had the opportunity to link to our community in several ways this term already!!!
Our school commemorated ANZAC Day with our school service on 24 April. We were lucky to have parents Mr Glenn Wright and Mr Christian Macdougall help our students by speaking with them about the significance of ANZAC Day.
It was great to see how many of our DSS families also attended the Dayboro ANZAC Day March and Community Service. How proud the students were to march/ride under the Dayboro State School name or other community groups!

This weekend, of course was the Dayboro RODEO!!! What another wonderful community event. It was so good to see so many of our families attending. We had some students competing too…. congratulations to Matilda, Abigail, Sam, Hattie and Flo. It was an honour to see you participating and showing all of the hard work you obviously put into your sport!

THANK YOU P&C for providing a community service at the Rodeo – having a child friendly tent with great snacks, activities and the famous chocolate toss. Not to mention the wonderful raffle! Great job team!
Our P&C also provided the community an Election BBQ on Saturday. What a team!!!!!
Engaging our students – Lunchtime Clubs!
We have really been working hard this term to engage our students. One of the ways we can provide enrichment activities is in the form of Lunchtime Clubs or special activities like our Friday Rodeo inspired bush dance. We really try to follow our students’ interests to guide the clubs that we offer. Some of the recent favourites have been:
- Maker Space in the library where the children can get creative!
- Gardening club
- Loom bands
- Wellness club
- Mosaic club
- Bush dancing
- Mentoring - Year 6’s mentors played with the 2D class last week
- Prep mentors – Year 6 students play games with our preppies
Of course, these clubs would not be possible without the overwhelming support of our staff who volunteer to spend extra time engaging our students!!! One of our year 3 students said after the recent Bush Dance - “I love how the school provides treats for the students. It’s like Christmas because we get spoilt and I love dancing!”

Term 2 Parent Calendar Update
Please find attached our latest version (V6) of our Parent Calendar to support you to stay informed about all of our school events. There have been some recent changes…..please find attached this version 4 of our Term 2 calendar.
Have a great week!

Dear Families and Friends
Next Friday, we celebrate and recognise what it means to
be Under 8!
The theme this year is “Unleashing Scientific Thinking through Play.”
What an exciting theme this year. Play and understanding about the Natural world go hand in hand. We take great pride in our links with the community and we are so fortunate to have many facets of our community involved in our Under 8’s celebration- our local kindies, our police and emergency services, the Scouts, local high schools and many more help out on the day.
It takes a village working together to create curious, civic-minded, caring, engaged and successful learners for life. How lucky are we in Dayboro to be able to work together and wrap our support as a community around our learners.
Under 8’s Day this week will be celebrated at Dayboro State School on Friday May 16th. See details below. Parents and friends of our younger children in P-2 are invited to come along and celebrate with us! Many thanks to our hardworking P-2 team who have organised this event!
Learning at Dayboro.
The Term 2 buzz around English and reading and comprehending is all about Information Reports/Information Brochures/Information Posters with a focus in the lower school years on learning to read to understand and comprehend information texts and how facts and information about animals is presented in different types of texts.
Look at the responses from a Prep student about their learning below: Amazing!!
Question: What are you learning to read about at the moment? (DP)
Answer: We are learning to read Information texts about animals. We look at the real life pictures and photos to help us. We will read the words to help us understand what they like doing. (Prep)
WEAR YOUR COWBOY HAT DAY
Thank you to all the students and staff who wore their cowboy hats last Friday to show support for our local Rodeo. Thank you to our P&C for also supporting on the day with the children’s activities stall.
Thank you to our poster competition winners - Gracen, Sophie, Kayla and Abby.
MOTHER’S DAY STALL
This Friday - Friday 9th May in the hall. Organised by our P&C. Children to bring their money and a bag to take their presents for mum home in.
Good luck to all our students competing at District Cross Country today.
Finally, a huge thank you to all the mothers, grandmothers and caregivers who love, support and work hard for their families every day. We hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday 11th surrounded by your loved ones.
Thank you from Mrs Ryan
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Get your School Photo Smile Ready
Leading Image School Photos are coming to Dayboro SS on Wednesday 28th May 2025 to take our school photos! We have listened to parent feedback and, weather permitting, we will be taking these photos outside. Please ensure you order and pay for all photos online.
No forms will be given to students this year, and as such no money will be taken by the school. The flyer has a QR code for you to scan and access the ordering system. We look forward to welcoming the team from Leading Image to our school and seeing our students smiling beautifully!
Maths at Home
Just like reading, there are many things you can do at home to support your child’s maths development. The more children can see maths applied at home, the more they understand the relevance for maths in their lives.
Cooking is a great way to get children interacting with fractions using different sized ‘cups’, measuring using millilitres, measuring using grams, measuring time duration for cooking etc.
Cooking offers great opportunities for problem solving e.g the recipe says we need half a cup of flour but I only have a quarter cup, could I still measure out half a cup somehow? Or, I need 500 ml of water but I can only see 1L marked on my measuring jug? How can I still use the jug? Or, if it is 2:30pm and we need to bake the cake for 45 minutes, what time will it be ready?
Working in the yard can also provide opportunities for maths thinking e.g we need to turf down the side of the house which is 21 metres long and 4 metres wide, how much turf will we need? Or, we have 2 planter boxes we want to fill with soil to make vege gardens with the dimensions of length:2m, height: 1m and width: 1m, how many cubic metres of soil do we need?
Playing certain games is another way to bring maths into the home. Yahtzee is brilliant for number facts (addition facts for the younger children, multiplication facts for the older children), uno for our little learners, learning their number symbols and colours, monopoly for calculating money amounts (I cannot be held responsible for any family blow-ups playing these games however).
One thing I have often heard over the years is parents saying ‘I was never very good at maths so I know why my child doesn’t get it’. This can often set a really fixed mindset in our children when they hear us saying that. It leads them to believe that if they don’t get it at the start, they will never get it. We encourage a growth mindset at Dayboro which is believing we can get better over time with persistence, teaching, practise and focus. New neurons can be formed at any time if the learning environment is right. It is really important that children know just because maths might take them longer or just because they might not get it straight away, does not mean it will be difficult forever. They need to seek extra help, keep trying, be open to understanding the mistakes and learning from them and they will make progress.

What a wonderful weekend for our community. Our P&C team and volunteers were busy serving delicious Bacon & Egg rolls and sausages during the election on Saturday, and on Sunday hosting the kids area at the Dayboro Rodeo.
So many members of our community contributed to making both of these events a great success and we would like to thank everyone involved.
A special mention to our donors, who so generoursly contributed to our raffle prizes and helped to make our weekend so successful.
Dayboro Village Meats, Your Place Mortgage Brokers - Elise Thomson, Form Fitness Club, PEK Electrical and The Dayboro Drop
A special mention to Woolworths Petrie & Strathpine for donating the chocolates for our Choc Throw, which again proved to be a fun activity for the kids (and some adults).

Mothers Day Stall – This Friday!

Next Meeting: Monday, 12th May 2025 at 6.30pm
Our P&C meet on the second Monday of every month, both in person and online. It is a great opportunity to get to know Mrs Douglas and Mrs Ryan, along with other parents and community members who are all committed to the continued improvement of our school.
If you would like to come along, please contact Steph at secretary@dayboropandc.org.au. We would love to see you there.
? Common Questions We Get Asked:
Do I have to come to every meeting?
Nope! We know how busy life gets. You can be as involved as you like—whether that’s attending meetings, helping at events, or simply staying in the loop with what’s happening at school.
When do you meet?
We meet on the second Monday of each month at 6:30pm, both in person and online to make it as easy as possible to join.
What does the P&C do?
We work together to support the school, students, and families in all sorts of ways, including:
✅ Running the tuckshop & uniform shop ?
✅ Raising money for important school projects (our current goals: a new playground & air-con for the hall!)
✅ Planning fun school events for students & families ?
✅ Advocating for students and parents by working closely with the school leadership team
The best part? You don’t need any special skills or heaps of free time to help out—many hands make light work! Whether you want to contribute a little or a lot, we’d love to welcome you to our P&C community.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 2025 Premiers Reading Challenge reading period began on the 6th of May. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 2 need to read or experience 20 books, students in Year 3 and Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books (this number of books acknowledges that older students are more likely to select longer and more complex books).
Each student will receive a reading recording sheet from their class teacher and additional recording sheets are available at the library. Students have until August to complete the challenge.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Students in all year levels are welcome to join in with the 25th annual National Simultaneous Storytime event on the 21st of May during first break at the Library. Students are welcome to visit the display at the Library during first break throughout this celebration week in May and are invited to join in with our celebration activities.
May is National Family Reading Month
This year is the 29th year of National Family Reading Month which celebrates and encourages families reading together. Why not take the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge? To participate in the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge simply read for a minimum of 10 minutes each day and mark the day’s reading on the record chart. The reading record chart is available from the Library and is also included below. Students who return their completed reading chart will receive a certificate of participation and will go into the draw to win one of 10 prizes.
Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson
