Engaging our students and giving them the tools to success!
We have been working hard to engage our students in learning this year discussing deliberate strategies to engage and ensure that our students are involved and representing their learning. Teaches provide lots of different and engaging ways for students to represent their ideas and learning.

We are continuing to ensure that our learning is visible in our classrooms to ensure that our students have access to previous learning and prompts. The children enjoy accessing the learning walls as they progress through the units. Student samples on the walls help them to see how they are tracking with their learning as teachers are sure to highlight the success criteria that the students have demonstrated. These scaffolds allow the students to discuss what learning they have already consolidated and what learning goal they may be working towards.
Why not ask your child about their learning and how they best like to represent their ideas?
ANZAC Day
Our school ceremony on 24 April was an opportunity for our whole school community to reflect and remember our ANZACs for all of their past service and continuing services. We were very fortunate to have the continuing support from our Dayboro War Memorial Society and the Dayboro RSL. Mr Simon McKechnie, one of our DSS parents is now the President of the Dayboro War Memorial Society and as such was able to participate in the ceremony.
We were also lucky enough to have Commander Kenneth Brown, a former Dayboro boy attending Dayboro State School until Year 7, come up from the ACT to speak with our students. Having Ken speak to our students about the service of ANZACs past and present was inspiring.
It was also wonderful to see how many students turned out for the Community March and Ceremony. How proud the students were to march/ride under the Dayboro State School name or other community groups. Our Year 4-6 students worked hard on creating Thank You Postcards to give to service men and women, that were supplied by the Dayboro RSL. Several community members contacted the school to personally say thank you to our students.
Some classes also had parents who have been in the armed forces volunteer to speak with the class about their time in the army and their service dog. Thank you to Mr Macdougall and Mr Knight for sharing your experiences to help our students understand.

A Dayboro Learner – Quinn the Quokka is a Critical Thinker
This week on assembly we introduced another Dayboro Learner quality - Quinn the Quokka who is a Critical Thinker. We discussed that critical thinkers like to solve problems, ask why and reflect on their learning.
Our students have been collecting the Dayboro Learner tokens as they are able to demonstrate the qualities we are teaching. We are looking forward to presenting our first certificates to students able to model all six qualities of a Dayboro Learner.
Student Success!
Henry participated in the 7 &Under Ultimate Ninja Athlete Association local qualifier on the weekend and won a gold medal, qualifying for the state championships. We are so proud of Henry and his efforts with training.
Term 2 Parent Calendar Update
Please find attached our latest version (V6) of our Parent Calendar to support you to stay informed about all of our school events. We have had to change the date of our Student Council CRAZY CLOTHES event. Our previous date coincided with a Year 3 and 5 incursion which would be difficult for those classes to participate fully.
Have a great week!

Dear Families and Friends
Building a national picture of child health- PREP students
From May 2024, our school, along with thousands of others across the country, will participate in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC is a teacher-completed census of our Prep students (similar to a questionnaire) which provides a comprehensive picture of how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.
The AEDC is an Australian Government Initiative and is completed nationally every three years.
Children don’t miss any class time while the AEDC is completed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information.
The data collected through the AEDC is used by schools, communities and governments to better understand children and families’ needs, and identify the services, resources and support they need.
AEDC data is reported at a school, community, state/territory and national level. AEDC results for individual children are not reported and the AEDC is not used as an individual diagnostic tool.
Some teachers have found that completing the AEDC made them more aware of the needs of individual children and their class, and that the data was useful for planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary, however the AEDC relies on all schools with children in their first year of full-time school participating in the collection. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the AEDC and how it is being used to help children and families visit: www.aedc.gov.au.
Learning at Dayboro.
The Term 2 buzz around English and learning about stories in the lower school is all about CHARACTERS!!!!
What is a character? Why are characters important when sharing stories with others? (Prep)
How do we describe characters? – their looks, actions and qualities (Yr. 1) and…
Do we prefer some characters over others in stories and why? (Yr. 2)
We have learnt about many fun characters already this term - Goldilocks, The Big Bad Wolf, Rainbow Fish and Cinderella vs Cinders and it has been very exciting to see our students engaging in puppet shows, story walks and sharing their character descriptions, character profiles and character preferences with other learners.

The Tuckerbox
- We are still looking for volunteers at the Tuckerbox this term. If you would like to check out our new equipment and help make a few toasties, please head to School24 Volunteer Roster and register your name. No prior experience in necessary and we can help with any blue card applications for any non parent volunteers.
- Just a reminder that our longest break is first break. It is this break that the students have the most amount of time to eat and we recommend ordering the majority of their food during this time. We have had hungry students coming to the tuckshop during first break on most tuckshop days asking where their order is, and often, the parent has ordered all their food in second break. It may be an error or oversight but it does throw the kitchcen into chaos.
- Also, if your child is sent with money for food other than drinks or ice blocks, they need to come to the window before the start of the day and write their order on a bag. Unfortunately we don't have the volunteers available to make food on the run. We only do so if absolutely necessary.

Maker space
We have had some very industrious students working in the maker space since the return from the holidays. We had some very interesting designs showcased in our recent “Design an outfit for a rubber duck” challenge. It was great to hear the conversations about the designs around the maker space table.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 2024 Premiers Reading Challenge reading period begins next Monday. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 2 need to read or experience 20 books, students in Year 3 and Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books (this number of books acknowledges that older students are more likely to select longer and more complex books).
Students will be given a reader recording sheet in class, they can also get a copy of this recording sheet from the library. We would love to see as many students as possible working towards completing this reading challenge.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Students in all year levels are welcome to join in with the 24th annual National Simultaneous Storytime event on the 22nd of May during first break at the Library. Students welcome to visit the display at the Library during first break throughout this celebration week in May and are invited to join in with our celebration activities.
We would like so say a special “Thank You!” to Miss Tracey who has been very busy making our fabulous display board to promote and celebrate Bowerbird Blues in the Library. It looks amazing!
May is National Family Reading Month
This year is the 28th year of National Family Reading Month which celebrates and encourages families reading together. Why not take the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge? To participate in the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge simply read for a minimum of 10 minutes each day and mark the day’s reading on the record chart. The reading record chart is available from the Library and is also included below. Students who return their completed reading chart will receive a certificate of participation.
Have a great week!
