Engaging students in Writing
It has been wonderful to see all of our students this term super engaged in narratives. From our Preppies who are sharing stories and making connections through to Year 5 who are writing the first chapter of a Fantasy novel. Year 6 students are writing an imaginative short story about a character who faces a conflict.
Our Year 4 students are writing a new chapter for Rohl Dahl’s - The Twits. They have been fully engaged in learning about the success criteria they need to include or show in their writing. Look at how they are working to identify the success criteria in an 'A' sample of work in preparation for changing this sample to a 'B' then a 'C'. By doing this, our students deepen their understanding of using explicit criteria in their writing, and learn what will help them to bump up their writing. Well done year 4!!!
Senior Cross Country
We are super excited about our Senior Cross-Country carnival next Tuesday morning. Mrs Marks has explained the program below. The students have been learning about cross country running and having a go at the course and many of our Year 4-6 students have been attending the trainings offered. It is super to see how engaged our students are in fitness.
Next Tuesday, Year 3-6 students will wear their sports polos representing their houses and will definitely need a drink bottle that day. Parents are very welcome to comealong and cheer as the students have a go and put their learning into action.
We will be celebrating the participation of all our students; Year 3-6 place holders will be acknowledged with ribbons. All students will receive a fruit ice block as a congratulations courtesy of the P&C. Thanks P&C!!!!
Prep-Year 2 students will participate in a junior carnival next term when it is cooler.

Dear Families and Friends
At Dayboro state school we celebrate difference and embrace every students’ unique qualities and strengths. This week we take time to acknowledge the importance of the message “Everyone Belongs” and reinforce this valuable ethos with all our students.
While Harmony Week is a very important event on our school calendar, it is important that we not just “talk the talk” but “walk the walk”. Every day our students and staff should be living the message that “Everyone Belongs” From the first welcome every morning at the front gate, to the classroom and in the playground, Dayboro staff and students strive hard to embrace and celebrate that everyone belongs here at Dayboro.
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent teacher conferences here at Dayboro have begun! They will continue over the next two weeks. Thank you to those parents who have already organised their times and attended their conference. Our teachers go to a lot of effort to prepare for these interviews and look forward to sharing the progress of every child in their class, so it is important that all parents take the opportunity to attend.
Below is some information supported by the Australian Government and Social Services Dept., about what to expect at Parent Teacher Interviews, particularly if you are a first-time school parent.
Parent-teacher interviews at primary school: what to expect
Throughout your child’s time in primary school, you might be asked to attend parent-teacher interviews, or conferences, usually once or twice a year.
These interviews are usually just short meetings – about 10-15 minutes – between you and your child’s teacher or teachers. Every parent is invited to attend at least one interview a year. Being invited to a parent-teacher interview doesn’t mean there’s a problem with your child’s progress.
Interviews might be held during school hours, before or after school, or in the evening. It’s good to make a time when both parents can go along, if you can. If you can’t manage any of the available times, you could call the school to arrange another time.
It’s important to be on time for parent-teacher interviews. But be aware that teachers might be running late because previous interviews have run over time.
Why it’s worth going to parent-teacher interviews
Parent-teacher interviews give you a great opportunity to:
- learn more about your child’s academic, emotional and social development
- meet and get to know your child’s teachers
- help your child’s teachers understand more about your child
- make plans with the teacher about how you can both support your child
- build a relationship with your child’s school
If you don’t have any particular concerns, you might wonder whether it’s worth going to parent-teacher interviews. But going along is one way to show your child that you’re interested in their learning and what’s happening for them at school.
Of course, if you do have concerns, it’s a chance for you to raise them with your child’s teacher if you haven’t done that already.
LEARNING AT DAYBORO P-2 ENGLISH
This term we have seen the Preps, Year 1 and 2’s embrace the power of story telling. Preps have been learning how to share stories with others (spoken of course) and make connections with events and ideas in the books with events that happen in their own lives.
Year 1 have been retelling favourite stories and focusing on including the parts of a story that make it more interesting like the events and the problems in stories. They have also been making connections between the texts and their own experiences to help them better understand what is going on.
Year 2 have been adding into a favourite story about friendships or family relationships. The part they add in should explore further the relationships between the characters and develop a problem in the story.

Maths at Home
Just like reading, there are many things you can do at home to support your child’s maths development. The more children can see maths applied at home, the more they understand the relevance for maths in their lives.
- Cooking is a great way to get children interacting with fractions using different sized ‘cups’, measuring using millilitres, measuring using grams, measuring time duration for cooking etc.
- Cooking offers great opportunities for problem solving e.g the recipe says we need half a cup of flour but I only have a quarter cup, could I still measure out half a cup somehow? Or, I need 500 ml of water but I can only see 1L marked on my measuring jug? How can I still use the jug? Or, if it is 2:30pm and we need to bake the cake for 45 minutes, what time will it be ready?
- Working in the yard can also provide opportunities for maths thinking e.g we need to turf down the side of the house which is 21 metres long and 4 metres wide, how much turf will we need? Or, we have 2 planter boxes we want to fill with soil to make vege gardens with the dimensions of length:2m, height: 1m and width: 1 m, how many cubic m of soil do we need?
- Playing certain games is another way to bring maths into the home. Yahtzee is brilliant for number facts (addition facts for the younger children, multiplication facts for the older children), uno for our little learners, learning their number symbols and colours, monopoly for calculating money amounts (I cannot be held responsible for any family blow-ups playing these games however ?).
One thing I have often heard over the years is parents saying ‘I was never very good at maths so I know why my child doesn’t get it’. This can often set a really fixed mindset in our children when they hear us saying that. It leads them to believe that if they don’t get it at the start, they will never get it. We encourage a growth mindset at Dayboro which is believing we can get better over time with persistence, teaching, practise and focus. New neurons can be formed at any time if the learning environment is right. It is really important that children know just because maths might take them longer or just because they might not get it straight away, does not mean it will be difficult forever. They need to seek extra help, keep trying, be open to understanding the mistakes and learning from them and they will make progress.

End of Term Book Returns
We are very quickly approaching the end of the school term. Students are reminded to return their overdue library books before the end of the term. Students in years 4, 5, and 6 are welcome to borrow over the break.
Remember that students in years 4, 5, and 6 are also able to access ebooks and audio books using Sora. Students will need their MIS username to access this resource and need to ensure they enter their school as Education Queensland. Other online libraries, such as Moreton Bay Region Library accounts, can be linked through the app to provide access to a larger number of reading resources, including magazines.
Book Fair
A huge thank you to everyone who came along and supported our recent Book Fair. Over $6000 worth of books were purchased during the book fair, which is amazing! Imagine all of the reading taking place over the holidays!
All purchases at the book fair contribute to an allocation of Scholastic Rewards for our school library which we are able to use to purchase book titles requested by students. This year we have raised $1900 worth of rewards which we will redeem with Scholastic over the next 12 months to purchase reading resources for our school library.
Thank you for your continuing support.
Congratulations to all of the students who submitted an entry into the “Design a Mini Beast” competition. They entries were amazing and showed that everyone had put care and effort into their designs – it was so hard to choose winners for each year level.
Congratulations Connie and Charlotte M, both in year 4, who correctly guessed the number of book worms in the bug catcher – there were 49 book worms.
Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson
Dear Parents and Carers,
The school cross country carnival is racing up on Tuesday 26th March.
All Year 3-6 students will be running laps of a 1km course. The expected distances and program are as follows:
The boys will start their race. The girls will line up immediately after and as the boys begin to leave the oval the girls will start. As one age group begins to finish the race the next age groups warms up.
All students will be offered the choice to either run the full 1-3km distance asked of their age or a single lap 1km Fun Run. The 2-3km distance will be timed, ribbons awarded and times may lead to attendance at the District Cross Country for 10-12yrs. The Fun Run will not be timed, there will be no ribbons but all runners will earn points for their house for participating. Students may also choose to run in both races if they wish.
On The Day
Family members and friends are welcome to come and cheer on their child/ren during their races.
Students need to come to school prepared with:
- House shirt and shorts
- Appropriate footwear
- Sunscreen
- School - sun safe hat (students do not have to run in their hats but they must wear them when not racing)
- Plenty of water.
If your child is asthmatic, please remind them to take their preventer before marshalling for their race. They will be pushing themselves harder than at any other time.
Helpers
I will need parent helpers on the day to supervise a section of the course. I will rotate you around so that you do not miss any of the action. Please email me on cxmar5@eq.edu.au if you are willing to help.

PE Specialist
What a fantastic few weeks!
Claire and Chloe from 5M helped run Dance Party Club on Thursday week 7 with over 50 students attending in the hall! We had lots of fun grooving to Just Dance clips and learnt a dance from our club helpers too!
Chappy's Gaga Ball (like dodgeball in an octagon pit) on alternate Thursdays and has had a high level of interest across grades 2-6. These, along with the other amazing lunch clubs that various staff & students run, are such positive ways to move, exercise, cooperate, create and have fun with others.
Friends thought of special attributes about themselves and others as we worked together to make a Harmony Day clip for the whole school to watch for Harmony Day. It has been so good to see classrooms looking at kindness and self-affirmation over this term. Prep friends were able to hear a couple of stories that highlight kindness from the Cranky Bear series, and it was great to hear them fill in rhyming words and predict the next text when Chappy Hannah paused throughout. At the end of the books, we reflected on kindness together.
A shout out to the P&C, thank you for having me at your recent AGM and monthly meeting. What an amazing school community we have!
Kindly, Chappy Hannah
