Parent / Teacher Partnerships
Parent /Teacher partnerships are super important to your child’s success at our school. We understand that you know your child the best and as such can help our teachers to understand their personality and motivations to support your child in their learning journey. A reminder that our Parent Teacher Conferences will be scheduled for the last two weeks of this term. The way to book a conference with your child/ren’s class teacher is through the SOB’s link:
If you would like to speak to one of our specialist teachers or inclusion teacher, you
can make a booking by emailing that staff member.
Please be aware of the following organisation for our conferences:
- Bookings will close on Friday 15 March to allow for teachers to prepare their interview schedule and have your child’s work samples ready to share with you
- The two late nights for interviews are Wednesday 20 March and Thursday 21 March. These interviews will take place in our School Hall. If children are in attendance (and not involved in the conference), there will be some activities at the back of the hall to engage them with support staff supervision
- The interviews NOT scheduled on the afternoons of 20 and 21 March, will take place in your child’s classroom. Please ensure that you keep all children with you on these occasions as we have no child minding available. Children are not permitted to be on the playgrounds before and after school.
We look forward to working together with you to support your child to thrive here at Dayboro State School.
Striving for Excellence and Equity in Curriculum
As part of how we are helping our students strive for excellence and equity in their learning as planned in our 2024 explicit improvement agenda: A whole school and community approach; striving for excellence and equity in curriculum and engagement ensuring high expectations for all.
Our staff regularly collaborate sharing teaching strategies, including feedback strategies, to support our students to understand how they are going with their learning and what are the student’s next steps for learning. While fostering a growth mindset, we are committed to ensuring that students understand their learning goals as next steps.

Our committed teachers have also been collaborating with the students to set up engaging learning environments. The Learning Walls and Bump It Up Walls to include specific tools and reminders of lessons taught for the students to use in their learning. It has been wonderful to see, on our visits to classrooms, how the students are engaging with their learning walls and contributing their ideas to share with their classmates. Our students regularly share how they use this learning to support them when showing what they know and can do.
Our teachers have also been discussing with students how they can use these learning walls to get feedback on how they are going with their learning. Why not have a chat to your child about the learning environment they are setting up with their teacher?

Every Day Counts towards learning!!
We are well into our crucial learning for semester 1. It is so important that all students attend every day and stay the whole day at school. Regular school attendance gives students a better chance at life. Our students achieve better when they go to school all day, every school day because:
- they have increased access to learning opportunities
- they maintain friendships
- they stay connected to the curriculum progression
- they develop self-efficacy as a learner
- they have better long-term life outcomes.
To help your child to be the best learner they can be and socially connected to their friends, please ensure that, unless your child is unwell, they attend every day and remain at school for the whole day. Important learning areas are still covered in our afternoon sessions. Thank you for your dedication!

Representing our school with pride
It is important to remember that whenever we go to sporting events, instrumental/choir performances, camps or are just out and about in the community, our students are expected to represent their school with pride. This is an important part of being RESPECTFUL and BEING PROUD. Two of our core values. These expectations can be shown in many different ways, from wearing the correct uniform to being considerate of others in the community. The feeling we get when someone outside of our school says, “Wow! Those Dayboro kids are really well-mannered” or “I am really impressed with their behaviour”, is really encouraging and something to be celebrated.
A few ways you can encourage your child to represent their school with pride is:
- ensuring they are wearing the correct uniform and it’s neat and tidy;
- discussing behaviours that are appropriate when out in the community;
- role-playing scenarios of interactions with others; and
- talking positively with your child about their school experiences and encouraging them to talk and think positively about their school.
Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of your children and equip them with the skills to BE RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, POSITIVE, PROUD, KIND, TOLERANT citizens.
Talking about being out and about in our community- Yes… our annual
Easter Hat Parade is back on!!!
Prep to Year 2 only
We love how the whole community comes out to welcome us as we walk through the town and finish with a small concert on the stage to celebrate. This will be on the last day of the term Thursday 28th March at the Roderick Cruice Park stage at 9:45am.
WHAT ARE GOTCHAS??
Gotchas are reward tickets that are usually given at eating and playtimes to students who are “discovered” being safe, respectful and kind in the playground. A range of staff give these Gotchas out. They are then put in the special Gotcha boxes at the office and every week at Assembly two students are drawn out from each year level to receive a small prize and an ice block voucher for the Tucker Box. Sometimes class teachers give Gotchas out for class time rewards as well.
Here is a wonderful example of how Gotchas work and how they are explained in Prep.
SO… WHAT ARE “GOLDEN” GOTCHAS??
Golden Gotchas are given out for outstanding effort in class and at play at lunchtimes. Students who show our 6 Values- Be Respectful, Responsible, Positive, Tolerant, Proud and Kind consistently throughout their day and across the term are given a Golden Gotcha. These Golden Gotchas then go into the draw for The Sheriff’s Award. At the end of each term Sgt Ken draws out two students who then receive a certificate and a gift voucher to recognise their outstanding efforts.

BEING BRAVE PRODUCTIONS
A reminder that next Tuesday 12th March the theatre production company BRAINSTORM is visiting our school with a performance of “Being Brave” for all our students. There is a cost involved of $7 per student to attend. Payment is consent to attend so there is no need to complete a permission form.
A reminder that next week , Week 8, is the last week of swimming. All parents of Yr 2 students are invited to attend their last swimming lesson on Friday 15th March. This is instead of a Junior Swimming Carnival/Showcase at the end of the year. The Prep and Yr 1 classes will be doing the same when they swim at the end of the year.
Times for the Yr 2 Swimming lessons are:
2B 9:30-10am
2D 10-10:30am
Looking forward to you all coming along to watch how far they’ve come!!!
Please remember that children are expected to wait in the CSA before School between 8:15am until the bell goes at 8:40am. The children are supervised during this time.
There should not be children playing on equipment or waiting outside classrooms before this time. A reminder that all mobile phones should be put away in bags on entry and exiting the school. They should then be handed to the class teacher on arrival to class.
BUS BEHAVIOUR
It has come to our attention that some students have been behaving inappropriately on the buses. The bus driver has a very important job to do and that is to get our students safely home. They cannot be distracted by students that cannot control their own behaviours. Please talk to your students about appropriate behaviours on the bus such as sitting still, (not moving around) talking quietly to the person beside them (not shouting at others) and certainly keeping their hand and feet to themselves (not hitting or contacting others with objects). Please help to keep all our students safe by reinforcing with your students how important it is that the bus driver can concentrate and get our students to and from school safely.
NAPLAN
A reminder that Years 3 and 5 will be taking part in the annual NAPLAN Online assessments from Wednesday 13th March until Friday 22nd March. Please try to ensure that students are on time especially during this period and also please limit outside appointments during school time and planned absences if possible. Mrs Douglas has published the timetable for these sessions.
Playgroup is back on!!!! This Friday morning 9-10am. Starting at the Helping Hands House beside our lovely school. This is an exciting opportunity for parents of younger children in our community to meet and have their children engage in high quality play-based learning and socialisation activities provided by a trained facilitator, usually a member of our school staff.
Looking forward to seeing our usual Little Learners (MAC!!!) and hopefully some new ones too.
We are in the middle of planning for our 150year celebrations in July this year. We are going to celebrate in a BIG way with an afternoon of entertainment and a BUSH DANCE in the evening. We would love members of our community to be involved in the planning also. Our next meeting will be on Thursday 14th March. Please ring the office if interested in attending the meeting. Ph 34256111
Also don’t forget to order your pavers. Order forms are able to be downloaded from our school website or picked up from the office.
Leave a lasting legacy from your family’s time at our amazing school and order a paver now. Orders will be closing soon.
Thank you Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Reading
Another message we would like to communicate with our parent community around reading is the notion of ‘reading levels’. Over the years, some schools have communicated to parents about the ‘reading level’ of their child. We have tried not to focus on levels so much when sharing reading progress at Dayboro, but it has come up in parent teacher conferences over the years.
We are not wanting to focus on ‘reading levels’ for a number of reasons:
- Reading levels are only an indication of the types of texts we can use to help students read at their instructional level.
- Reading levels are not aligned to academic ratings.
- Reading levels are attached to reading tests / check-ins that we do with students. It is the information we gather from these check-ins about our students’ reading that is the most important information (not the level).
- Levels don’t explain the reading progress being made by a student even if they stay at that level for a while.
- Our new Department focus on reading will not include ‘levels’.
We encourage parents to discuss with class teachers, their child’s decoding skills, fluency, word comprehension and overall text comprehension.
Any questions, please feel free to e-mail me: dmath9@eq.edu.au
Dee Mathiesen (Head of Curriculum)
The time is nearly here, less than a week to go until our P&C AGM next Monday. We would love as many representatives from the school community as possible as it’s an excellent opportunity to learn about our plans for the year.
Here are some answers to a few of the commonly asked questions over recent weeks…..
What does joining the P&C entail? Signing a membership form. This means you will have voting rights at any of the meetings. From there, it can be whatever you want it to be and you can be involved as much as you want to be.
If I join, do I have to go to every meeting? We would love to see you there and hear your thoughts, but it is not compulsory. There is always the option to join via Teams at home if you are able.
If I join, do I have to nominate for a position? No, not at all. Just being a member and contributing when and where you can is enough. We are truly fortunate to have the current committee willing to sign up again next year, so if you have been wondering about a position but not wanting to jump straight in, you can always work alongside someone and learn the ropes.
If I join, do I have to volunteer at the tuckshop every week? Nope. Of course, if you can volunteer on occasion that’s fantastic, but it certainly isn’t expected or required.
If I join, do I have to volunteer at every event? Not at all. If you can, great! If not, then any contribution to the ideas behind them is amazing.
If I join, do I have to read the newsletter every week? Well, that one is up to you. Your friends may assume you have though ?
If you would like to come along, please contact Johanna at secretary@dayboropandc.org.au.
We would love to see you there.

LOST PROPERTY
Dayboro Detectives.... I have had a Cricket bag appear - It's been here for a while. Does anyone know someone by the surname Stewart that might be missing some gear. It is most likely an older student that left it at the bus shelter or similar. Contact the office.
Library News and Events
This year students in year 4, 5, and 6 are have access to Education Queensland’s digital library via Sora. This online library provides a wealth of digital resources for reading including eBooks, magazines, audio books, graphic novels, etc. To access these digital materials, students need to open the Sora app which is available by installing it on a digital device or via the Sora webpage if using a computer. Upon opening the app students need to nominate their school, which needs to be entered as Education Queensland. Students need their MIS Id number to open their account. Remember that Moreton Bay Region Library accounts can be linked to Sora accounts, please ask parents for permission and assistance to do this.
Book Fair
Book Fair begins this Friday the 8th of March and run until Wednesday the 13th of March. Students may visit with a parent or caregiver before school on each of these days from 8.15am or after school until 4.00pm. Students should have received an information flyer in class this week and all classes will visit the Book Fair on Friday to view the assortment of books available for purchase. Families wishing to purchase items from Book Fair may do so using cash or card payment facilities at the Book Fair or via online payments.
Remember that entries for our “Design a Mini Beast” Competition close this Thursday. To enter, students need to design and construct an insect or mini beast to add to our Book Fair display. We are looking for bright and colourful creations that make use of recycled materials. There is one prize per year level. Please include the student’s name and class on each entry.
Have a great week!
