What absolute stars we have here at Dayboro. So lucky to have these, and all of our staff here to support our students!

A huge thank you to the P&C and community for generously providing our staff with morning and afternoon tea. We all felt super spoilt and it reminded us how lucky we are to work at Dayboro State School!
Congratulations to our DSS First Lego League teams
On Saturday, two teams of Year 5 and 6 students, 9 students in total, represented Dayboro State School at the First Lego League competition. Mrs Wilkinson has been coaching our Robotics club each Friday afternoon and many, many lunch times. Both the Destroyers and the Dominator teams received great scores and positive feedback and showed fantastic team work skills. The Destroyers had a PB score and worked super well together. The Dominators team were awarded the Innovation Project Award. The judges loved their idea to share horse riding experiences with people who have disabilities through the robotics. All of the students are to be congratulated for their positive attitude, resilience and participation in all aspects of the competition throughout the day.
A huge thank you to Mrs Wilkinson for all of her coaching and to Mrs Blair, Mrs O'Dwyer and Mrs Mackintosh for also supporting on the day as judges and also chaperones.
Go Dayboro!!!

Transitions and Planning for 2024
Today we welcomed our Preppies for 2024 for a transition morning in Prep. They experienced the Prep environment and got to know some of our wonderful Prep staff. Our current Prep students enjoyed a morning transitioning to Year 1. They visited the Year 1 classrooms and were helped along in their learning by the current Year 1 students!

We are currently trying to plan effectively for new enrolments, facilities, resources and staffing for the 2024 school year. Please ensure that you contact our school administration team if your child/ren are not returning to Dayboro SS in 2024. Thank you for your support.

Dear Families and Friends
LEADERSHIP
Last week we had the pleasure of speaking with our future leaders of 2024. We were so proud to hear our current school captains of 2023 talk to the Year 5 students about the lessons they had learnt from their time as leaders. They talked about being brave, stepping outside of their comfort zone, walking the walk not just talking the talk, living and practicing our school values every day, showing a growth mindset and believing that when mistakes were made they learnt from them and most importantly being kind to others and setting a good example for others to follow. We encouraged all Year 5’s to have a go, take a risk and step outside of their own comfort zones to think how they could be leaders in 2024, as it is not just the school or sports captains but the whole cohort of Year 6’s who will set the tone and show the younger students what it means to be leaders. We wish all the students well as they begin to prepare for their leadership journey and we thank our current leaders of 2023 for leading the way.
Speaking of Leadership- Our 2023 School Captains had the honour of visiting Parliament House on the 11/10. Thank you Ms. Nikki Boyd M.P. for hosting our leaders for the day and teaching them about the inner workings of Parliament House.

YEAR 6 CAMP
Next week our Yr. 6 students head off to camp at Camp Coolum Luther Heights. They leave on Tuesday and return on Friday. We wish them all a safe and adventurous week of fun, friendship and flying foxes! We hope they make the most of this chance to develop new friendships and to cement lasting bonds before they leave for High School next year. What a great way to finish the year!
Over the next few weeks, the children and teachers will be very busy working hard on completing assessment tasks, checking in on reading, refining problem solving skills in Maths and finishing English, Health, Technology and Music tasks but most importantly they will be reflecting on and celebrating a year of wonderful learning achievements. While many children embrace the chance to show their teacher how much they have learnt and are easily able to reflect on their successes and challenges, some children may feel a little overwhelmed at this time of year with all the expectations they feel they need to meet.
But…..
We can help our children to navigate these challenges through helping to instil in them a “Growth” mindset.
Below are 6 tips for promoting a “growth mindset” in children.
- Help children understand that the brain works like a muscle, that can only grow through hard work, determination and lots and lots of practice.
- Don’t tell students they are smart, gifted or talented since this implies they were born with the knowledge, and does not encourage effort and growth.
- Let children know when they demonstrate a growth mindset. “I can always improve so I’ll keep trying.”
- Praise the process. It’s effort, hard work and practice that allow children to achieve their true potential.
- Embrace mistakes and challenges. Children sometimes learn the most when they make mistakes. Let them know they are a big part of the learning process. There is nothing like the feeling of struggling through a very difficult problem, only to finally break through and solve it.
- Encourage participation and collaborative group learning. Children learn best when they are immersed in a topic and allowed to discuss and learn with their peers.
(Based on research in Dr Carol Dweck- Revisits the Growth Mindset)
Now that the days are starting to get warmer please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during play times and PE lessons. The rule is “No Hat, no Play!” Please remember to name your child’s hat as it makes it much easier to return lost hats to their owners.
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.
Thank you to all the wonderful parents and community members who sent lovely delicious treats to the school for our staff to share on our World Staff Appreciation day last Friday.
We truly did feel appreciated and valued.
THANK YOU!

Uniforms
As part of our commitment to providing the best experience for our students and families, we are currently reviewing our school uniform policy and supplier.
Over the years, there have been changes in the market, and we want to ensure that our uniform supplier meets the expectations and preferences of our school community. It has been quite some time since our last review, and we recognize that there may be factors influencing your views on this matter.
One significant aspect of this review is the consideration of increasing costs. We understand the financial responsibilities that come with providing your child with a quality education, and we want to ensure that our uniform remains affordable while maintaining high standards.
We invite you to share your thoughts on the current pricing and quality of our school uniforms. Your feedback is essential in helping us understand what matters most to you. Are there specific aspects you find particularly important, such as the origin of the products (Made In Australia), or would you prioritize keeping prices as low as possible?
Your insights will play a crucial role in shaping the decisions we make regarding our uniform policy and supplier. Please take a moment to complete the brief survey linked below:

ADMIN
There is a ridiculous amount of lost jumpers in Admin. Some are schoolwear -some are not. We do our best to get things back to their rightful owners, but if things are un-named it makes it very difficult. I will put the box of lost property on the bench outside Admin for the next week, please come up and go through it if you are missing winter clothes.
I have also collected:
1 x pair of prescription glasses Purple/Pink
1 x bright fluro yellow/green drink bottle
1 x large blue hair brush
1 x pair of boys togs (Black)
All lost property will be given to Lifeline in the next few weeks.
QParents
We have attached copies of flyers and registration information for QParents for your information. If you have not yet registered for QParents, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible.
QParents allows you access to Report Cards, advise absences, update your details eg a new address. All of our permissions are available through Qparents and you can pay for excursions there as well. Once you are registered you can access QParents any time which means that you can get jobs done whenever it suits you, the app is helping us to cut down on paper usage and Jill is especially excited not to be drying paper permissions that the water bottle has leaked on or wiping mashed banana off them! No more chasing permissions that are still in school bags or that got lost somewhere between home, the classroom and the office. Woohoo!
If you need any assistance or have any queries, please call Jill in the office she is happy to help.
Robotics Success
The two First Lego League robotics teams attended their competition day at Grace Lutheran College on the 28th of October. Both teams performed exceptionally well on the day – the hours (and hours) of preparation they put in before the day was clearly evident.
First Lego League teams need to perform well across multiple aspects of the competition. Teams need to prepare an innovation project (this year’s theme required that teams share a hobby or interest with others in a creative way), they must also build a robot and code it to operate autonomously in order complete a number of challenges set up on a robotics mat. Points are earned in two and a half minute rounds.
The Dayboro Dominators were awarded the Innovation Project Award. Their team presented an idea they developed where they would be able to share horse riding experiences with people who have disabilities using a VR immersive experience.
The Dayboro Destroyers achieved a personal best team score of 225 points for the robot table game. At the time they achieved their PB score in the third round they were positioned in second place with their score (we are awaiting confirmation that this was still their position at the end of the third round).
We would also like to send out a huge thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success including parents for transporting students, Mrs Blair and Mrs Mackintosh (who were first time judges), Mrs O’Dwyer and Merten Foerster who assisted the team on the day, and to Carrie-ann Young who generously created team shirts for the students to wear – what a way to build team spirit! Thank you all so much!
Library
Over the last few months we have had a lot of children asking for more scary books to borrow – so this week we have added a collection of new books to the library which all have a spooky/scary theme. Books selected include the “Last Kids on Earth” series, the “Violet Veil Mysteries” series, “Pets Rule” series and “Desmond Cole Ghost Patrol” series, to name a few. We hope that the children who requested the books enjoy them!
A reminder to students with overdue books – please return these as soon as possible so that other children can enjoy the books too.
Have a great week!
Mrs Wilkinson.
Book Club
Book Club for Term 4 will be issue to students in the coming days. Families are also able to view the latest issue of Book Club on line. Orders for this issue of Book Club will close on Thursday the 31st of August (Week 8).
It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to their class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/loop or by using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Alternatively, order forms with payment can be handed in at the school office. All orders placed through Book Club help to earn free reading books for the school library.
