Dear Parents and Caregivers
Dayboro State School is pleased to participate in Under 8s Week in 2019.
This year, Under Eights Week across Queensland is focussing upon the theme of ‘Celebrating the diversity of languages within the home, culture and community’.
Our school will be celebrating with a fun filled morning of activities for our Prep-2 students and our local kindergarten students on Friday 24 May from 9.00am – 10.45am.
We also look forward to welcoming our local emergency services as well as students from Bray Park State High School who will assist throughout the morning.
Prep Enrolments -2020
We are already receiving enquiries about our Prep program for 2020. We are pleased to provide information and enrolment information anytime at our school office. However, I am able to advise that our Prep Information and Enrolment Morning will be held on Wednesday 28 August at 9.30am in our School Hall. This will be followed up with Prep interviews for all newly enrolled students from 14-18 October and a Prep Orientation Day on Tuesday 12 November.
If you have a child born between 1 July 2014 – 30 June 2015, he/she is eligible for Prep enrolment at Dayboro State School in 2019. Please note that Dayboro State School has an Enrolment Management Plan in place – please check at http://education.qld.gov.au/schools/catchment/ for further information.
We have had several enquiries regarding enrolling at Dayboro Prep from outside the catchment area. Families who view Dayboro as their school of choice are very welcome to submit an enrolment application, however the outcome of the application will not be advised until late October when available places are allocated in the order of receipt.
I would be pleased if this information could be circulated to people who are known to you and are wishing to enrol in our Prep program in 2020.
School Uniform
With the cooler weather approaching, our students will want to start wearing jumpers and long pants. All students are required to wear the correct school uniform to school. The wearing of school uniform is most desirable and strongly encouraged. It helps to promote a sense of belonging, minimises school clothing costs as well as providing an important safety measure for children on excursions.
Winter Uniform
- School Hat
- School Polo Shirt and Shorts or Skorts, or Formal Uniform
- Navy Jumper (no hoodies)
- Navy Long pants
Other coloured jumpers or jackets or black jumpers with motifs or patterns are not part of our school uniform. We appreciate your support with our uniform policy.
Traditionally, winter brings the highest amount of lost or displaced clothing. Could I please ask parents to ensure that all clothing (particularly coats, track pants and hats) are clearly marked so that items can be returned to their owners.
Dogs in the School
Dayboro State School is a designated workplace, and as such strict Education Department policies exist around Workplace Health and Safety for staff, students and community members. As part of these policies, could I please remind our school community that dogs are not permitted inside the school grounds at any time. Service animals are excluded from this policy. Signs are erected on the school fences which display the Departmental policy.
I would like to thank everyone for your cooperation in ensuring that our school remains a safe environment for everyone.
NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be conducted from Tuesday 14 May until Thursday 16 May. NAPLAN assesses literacy
and numeracy skills that students are already learning through the school curriculum. Teachers will ensure students are familiar with the test formats and will provide appropriate support and guidance. If you have any questions about your child’s participation or preparation around NAPLAN, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or the school administration.
Friday 17 May is set aside as a ‘catch up day’ for students that may have been absent for all or part of the testing program.
Woolworths Earn and Learn
Once again, our school has signed up to be part of the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion. In 2017, our school was able to secure over $3000 worth of new resources for our classrooms.
One Earn and Learn sticker is earned for every $10 of purchases at Woolworths Supermarkets. Please bring your stickers or completed sticker sheets and place them in the collection bin at the school office. Further collection bins for our school are located at Warner, Petrie and Strathpine Woolworths stores.
Dear Families and Friends
NAPLAN testing time again!
As mentioned above, our Year 3 and 5 students will soon participate in the annual National Assessment Program — Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests to assess their skills and understanding in the areas of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
The tests will be conducted in all state and non-state schools across the country from 14–16 May. See the timemtable in Mr Drummond's section.
An individual NAPLAN report for each child will be sent home later this year. Results provide additional feedback for parents, carers and teachers on how students are progressing in key curriculum areas.
The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to reassure your child that NAPLAN tests are just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can.
Further NAPLAN information for parents and carers is available online. Please contact the school if you have any questions about your child participating in NAPLAN testing.
EXCITING NEWS! OUR ANNUAL CHOCOLATE COLLECTION CLASS COMPETITION HAS STARTED!
Every year the P and C ask for donations of chocolates for the Chocolate Drop stall they run on Dayboro Day. All funds raised go towards our school. So… we ask that children bring in donations of chocolates- big, small, blocks, fun-sized (just not cooking chocolate please). The chocolates should go straight to the class teacher who then keeps them until the BIG CHOCOLATE WEIGH IN day! The chocolate collections are then weighed and the winning class receives a Pizza Party at the end of the term. So start bringing those chocolates in and help your class win the prize.
WEIGH IN DAY IS MONDAY 20th MAY!!!!!
IMPORTANT NEWS FOR KEEPING YOUR CHILD AND OTHER KIDS HEALTHY!
Thank you to our whole school community for supporting Photo Day last Friday. It was such a pleasure to see nearly 100% of our students in their formal uniform. Well done everyone!

Writing Success at Dayboro State School
In 2019, we are continuing to embed research-based strategies in the teaching of Writing at Dayboro State School. You may have heard your children talking about ‘Sizzling Starts’ or ‘Ban the Boring’, two important skills of effective writers. These are part of a toolbox of strategies teachers have been implementing as we seek to renew student enthusiasm, creativity and competency in the craft of writing. Teachers are participating in professional development sessions and peer mentoring to implement Modelled, Shared, Guided and Independent Writing in their classrooms. From Prep to Year 6 we are encouraging students to set individual learning goals and then reflect on their writing progress. Ask your child to share how they collaborate with other writers, and to tell you how ‘Dynamic Dialogue’ and ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ improves the quality of their writing.

CROCHET CLUB commences next week!
On Tuesday 14 May, I will begin to teach children from years 4, 5 and 6 how to crochet a Granny Square.
If students are interested they are invited to attend a meeting in Ms Foord’s room during play time at first break on Tuesday.
At this meeting I will provide children with a note outlining the requirements.
I am hoping for donations of 8ply wool which might assist us in our project. If you have wool at home, cluttering up your cupboards, please feel free to send it to school. I would be very grateful for all and any donations.
I look forward to teaching all the aspiring Grannies!
Melinda Foord.
HOW TO CONNECT MORE WITH YOUR CHILD Part 1
Every time we say “yes” to something, we are forced to say “no” to everything else. Whether due to financial necessity, desire for adult company, intellectual stimulation, or other reasons, more and more mums (and dads) are leaving the home to work and experiencing a sense of loss of connection with their child.
Parents want to be with their children. We want to see them grow, develop, take their first tentative steps, talk for the first time, and more. But we cannot do it all.
Here are some ideas for working parents to make the most of the limited time that they have with their children.
Connect
When you collect your child from day-care or school, spend time right there and then to connect. Find out what they did. Talk about their activities. Let them show you around their experiences for the day. Be guided by them though, and leave if they just wants to go home. Keep the radio off in the car and chat with them, sing with them, and make the commute count.
Devices down
The emails are pinging. The Facebook notifications are flashing. The texts are dinging. Ignore them. They may seem important, but they can (typically) wait until your child is in bed. Until then keep devices down. The message we send to our children emotionally while we’re messaging everyone else digitally is clear: other people matter more than you do. Our capacity to connect with our kids is crushed by the screen tsunami. Keep devices away until later.
Invite him into your world
When you get home from work it will usually be full-on. There’s dinner to prepare, a bath to run, a house to organise, preparations for tomorrow, and most likely even more work to do. Where it’s possible, invite your child into your world. Rather than sticking them in the corner with their iPad, get them chopping carrots, stirring onions, or running the bath with you.
Touch
We easily forget how important touch is for a healthy relationship and a healthy child. Make sure you hug, tickle, and touch. It builds bonds.
Have a great week!
See you around the school. J

A great big welcome back to term 2 from the Helping Hands team!
Our children all thoroughly enjoyed vacation care and are excited to leap into term two. Children have been engaging in outdoor sport such as touch football and basketball, and our older children have experimented with 3D painting with Miss Jenny.
Our end of term pizza party was a success, and we now turn our focus to planning a breakfast for our parents/carers to attend with their children. This is a great way for us to interact with parents and families, and encourage parents/families to have a look at our service and see all the exciting things our children get up to when they are with us.
Please be advised if your child/ren attend extra-curricular activities on the school premises before/after school, we require a permission form to be filled out each term. Please see one of the team for a form if you require this.
Our 2019 homework club continues daily from 4:30pm-5:00pm.
We welcome all new families to the service, Helping Hands Dayboro requires online enrolment forms to be completed before attending the service. Online bookings and enrolments can be made through the iParent Portal which can be access through the Helping Hands Network site by selecting Dayboro as your service and signing up following the prompts. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462
Have a great week!
