How do our students know how to be successful?
This term, our teachers have been collaborating to plan for the teaching of English (and Maths). Each year level team meet each fortnight with Dee Mathiesen our Head of Curriculum, and Karen or I to review their students’ learning and their students’ responses to our learning questions:
- What are you learning and why?
- How are you going?
- How do you know?
- What do you need to improve?
- Where can you go for help?
By reviewing the student learning, and our students’ responses about their learning, allows us to collaboratively plan for delivery of lessons for the next two weeks. When we understand what our students already know, and what they will need to learn next to be successful, it allows our teachers to target their teaching to the students’ very next steps.
Back in the classroom, our teachers then work with their students, providing feedback, so that their students understand what they will need to learn to be successful in their learning. Learning walls have been established in the classrooms to record all of the artefacts the teachers and students are working on together during their learning cycle. Teachers also include super examples of student work, showing students how they can ‘bump up’ their writing. Teaching certainly is an art!
Why don’t you ask your child what they are learning about this term in English, specifically writing?

Successful students!!
We love hearing about our students following their passions and interests. Over the first weeks of this term, we have seen several of our students participate in school or community events. Congratulations to them all, GO DAYBORO!

QParents – consent management
We are continuing to establish our consent management process through QParents. Unfortunately we still have very few parents signed up to use QParents, which is a one stop shop for all your consents, invoices, payments, absence messages and report cards. Invitations have been sent but if you need assistance, please see Jill in the office on Mondays and Tuesdays, and odd Wednesdays. SIGN UP TODAY!
This term, our report cards will be sent via QParents initially. A day later, we will push them out via email.
Go Blue for Autism
We continue to use our Student Council to listen to our student voice. This week, our students have opted to increase awareness of Autism by promoting Wearing Blue for Autism on Friday 5 June. Please note this is not a fundraising event.
We celebrate diversity at Dayboro SS each day, and our staff will work with students this week to understand autism diversity so that we celebrate the inclusion of all of our community members.
Updated Parent Calendar for Term 2
Our term is already off and running! Please find attached below the updated Parent calendar to assist you in keeping on track and organised. We hope it helps?!
Have a great week! Gabrielle
Learning at Dayboro.
Well, Term 1 has finished and our students are hard at work planning for and working towards reaching their learning goals for Term 2.
Last term, Year 1 were exploring how a story works. They learnt what the purpose of telling imaginative stories is and learnt how to retell well-loved stories they have heard before. They learnt how important the story structure is and that problems in stories make them more interesting.
I wanted to share some examples of the writing work that our Yr 1 learners completed at the end of Term 1. They worked diligently towards their writing goals. With clear expectations and fun and engaging learning along the way, the writing that our Year 1 students ended up completing, was outstanding.
EXCITING WRITING
Retell- Big Rain Coming (Des 1T)
On Sunday Old Stephen said, “Big Rain coming.” On Monday there was no rain during the night. Rosie’s kids dragged their nice warm cosy beds hoping for a lot of breeze. On Tuesday there was still no rain. The dogs were digging in the nice cool dirt. On Wednesday there was still no rain. The kids went swimming in the still billabong. On Thursday the big fat frogs were sitting under the dripping tank because there was no rain still. On Friday Old Stephen said, “Big Rain Coming” but there was still no rain. On Saturday there was finally rain- cool, wet rain.
Retell- Big Rain Coming (Sanne 1T)
On Sunday Old Stephen nodded to the clouds and he said big rain coming. He lived in the outback. On Monday there was still no rain and the it was so hot. The kids dragged their mattresses outside to get some breeze while they slept. On Tuesday it went all day without any rain. The dogs dug a hole to keep cool but there still wasn’t any rain. On Wednesday the sad, hot kids swam in the billabong and it was so still and hot but there was still no rain. On Thursday the green fat frogs wanted some water but there wasn’t any rain or water for the green fat frogs. It was finally Friday Old Steven said, Big Rain coming” but there still wasn’t any rain. On Saturday there was rain lots of cool, wonderful rain… finally!

Amazing teacher prompts on their class Learning Walls that the students love to access while writing.
Well done to all our students who competed at the District Cross Country on Tuesday.
Finally, a huge thank you to all the mothers, grandmothers and caregivers who love, support and work hard for their families every day. We hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day on Sunday 14th surrounded by your loved ones.
Thank you from Mrs Ryan
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
District cross country
We had a wonderful day at district cross country today. Our team of runners gave it their all, with some achieving personal bests and others just happy to have the experience and opportunity. Everyone cheered each other on which was lovely to see and thanks to all the family members who were an enthusiastic part of the cheer squad. Particular congratulations go to Digby, Tilly and Emily who finished in the top 20 and to Lachlan, Karsyn and Will S who finished in the top 8 and made the Pine Rivers District team. Good luck in regionals.
Library
We have had a busy start to Term 2 with lots of activities available in the Maker Space at lunch time. Lego has been a very popular choice and we have seen lots of box construction by students from across the school this term, including a very impressive bike track with jumps and loops. Students also had the chance to design and test pirate boats in the lead up to our Book Fair.
Event Reminders:
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 2023 Premiers Reading Challenge reading period begins on the 8th of May. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 2 need to read or experience 20 books, students in Year 3 and Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books (this number of books acknowledges that older students are more likely to select longer and more complex books).
This year there has been a slight change with the way student details are saved for the production of certificates, this means we now require written parent/carer consent for students to have their information stored on an external database so that completion certificates can be produced at the end of the reading challenge. Students will be bringing home a more detailed explanation letter with their reading log and consent form in the coming days.
National Simultaneous Storytime
Students in all year levels are welcome to join in with the 23rd annual National Simultaneous Storytime event on the 24th of May during first break from 11.00 a.m. After listening to this year’s book, “The Speedy Sloth”, students are welcome to stay for the remainder of first break and join in with our celebration activities.
May is National Family Reading Month
May is National Family Reading Month which celebrates and encourages families reading together. Why not take the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge? To participate in the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge simply read for a minimum of 10 minutes each day and mark the day’s reading on the record chart. The reading record chart is available from the Library and is also included below. Students who return their completed reading chart in early June will receive a certificate of participation.
Have a great week!
Book Fair
Book Fair is on NOW!
Book Fair will run until May 10th. Book Fair is open each school day from 8:15 a.m. and after school until 4:00 p.m. Families are able to pay for books via LOOP (see information in the preview and invitation) or at the Book Fair using cash or EFTPOS facilities.
A preview of some of the exciting books that will be available at Book Fair is available online at the following link.
Hello everyone!
I hope everyone had a nice long weekend! I went camping (again… I feel like I live outside lately, haha!) at Mt Tamborine. We definitely noticed the change in weather over the weekend. The cold was perfect for sitting around the fire.
Chappy Day - 22nd May - Last week the chaplaincy committee had out once a term meeting. We are planning some fun activities for our Chappy Day. We will be having a Subway option for lunch (order forms will come home soon), a handball tournament (keep an eye out for sign up sheets) and some other really fun lawn games brought in for the day. Stay tuned!
Dayboro Local Chaplaincy Committee – if you are interested in volunteering to help out with any chaplaincy events at school, please send me an e-mail. You may also be interested in attending committee meetings or even joining the team. We meet once a term to organise and plan what I will be focusing on each term. This is a great way for parents to have input into what they’d like to be contributed to the school through this program.
Rock and Water - Our Year 2 group started yesterday. Each student has set themselves a Rock and Water goal that they want to work towards over the program. At the end when they graduate, they will get to do something to symbolise them reaching this. It could be something like “have more self-confidence” or “not hitting”. We are proud of them for their willingness to reflect, learn and improve in this space.
SUPA Club – We have our next SUPA club on Friday 12th May. Please note that permission slips need to be returned before students attend. You can get one of these from the office or from myself. See the flyer below for further details on what we are learning.
Dayboro Day – this year the Dayboro chaplaincy committee is holding a raffle to be drawn towards the end of Dayboro Day. First prize is a brand new 20 inch Lightforce brand Light Bar. These are good quality, Australian made lights that make driving on dark country roads at night much safer! You can use the QR codes on the flyer below to purchase either 1 ticket for $1 or 10 tickets for $8. You’ve got to be in it to win it so make sure you get yours. Entries are open now!
