Dear Parents and Caregivers
Thankyou to everyone who supported the Sunday Funday last weekend. We are pleased to advise that over $875 was raised from the day, which will go directly towards offsetting the costs of our school swimming program. A big thankyou is extended to Cr Darren Grimwade for making the day possible and to Nathan Oldfield and his team from the P&C who organised the food stalls on the day.

Dear Families and Friends
“Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values. “
At Dayboro State School we support this day and here at Dayboro we are certainly inclusive, respectful and teach the importance of belonging, accepting others and being tolerant of differences. To recognise this day the children have created a Harmony Wall with representations of their footsteps and what “ Harmony” means to them. They have been placed in the hall on the back wall under the theme of “We all Walk Together.”
Below are some interesting facts and figures that highlight our country’s diversity.
Facts and figures
- nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was
- we identify with over 300 ancestries
- since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia
- 85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism has been good for Australia
- apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Italian, Greek, Tagalog/Filipino, Hindi, Spanish and Punjabi

Parking on School Grounds
Just a reminder to our school community that there is no parking on the school grounds. Please also be mindful during drop off and pick up times that parents are parking legally, and not obstructing driveways or roads. The council has visited the school last week asking us to remind everyone of this issue. The safety of our students is paramount, we are asking for everyone’s assistance in this.
Financial Hardship
If you are experiencing any struggles with paying for invoices, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 3425 6111 or via email cingh6@eq.edu.au to arrange a payment plan.
Payment plans are designed to give parents the opportunity to pay-off any invoices they have. Dayboro SS does not wish for any student to miss out on any opportunity due to financial concerns.
Kind regards,

Dayboro Community Sunday Funday
The Dayboro Community Sunday Funday at the Dayboro Pool was successful despite the bad weather, and the kids who attended certainly had a wonderful time. P&C would like to sincerely thank our MBRC local Councillor Darren Grimwade for funding and organising this event, now in its second year, as well the great efforts by Bridget and Erin from BE Events, who did so much of the organisational work in the lead up to, and the day of this event, all of which made P&C’s involvement all the more easier. I would also like to especially thank our Vice President Nathan, who took the lead role in P&C’s involvement with this event this year, along with all the other P&C members and other family volunteers who assisted throughout. Thank you all! It appears P&C has raised almost $870.00, and this money is earmarked to assist with covering the costs of our School’s swimming program for our kids.
Easter Raffle
The Easter Raffle is now well underway, with both chocolate donations and sold raffle ticket monies and ticket stubs being deposited at the Office. Many thanks to all families who have already donated items for use with the raffle prizes, but we look forward to receiving more donations towards the Easter Raffle over the coming week. Please note that all tickets (both sold and unsold) and ticket sale monies need to be returned to the Office before Wednesday 27 March, and please do not remove the label from the book of tickets. This year’s Easter Raffle prizes will be drawn at Parade on Monday 1 April.
Containers for Change
For all the keen recyclers among our students and families, please be aware you can make donations to our P&C via involvement with the Containers for Change scheme. This way you can not only help the environment, but also help our School through your P&C. The Dayboro State School P&C scheme ID is C10042067, so please use this ID if you want to donate in this manner and any proceeds will be deposited into our P&C account.

Term 1 Parent Teacher Meetings
At Dayboro State school parents are invited to meet with their children’s teachers twice yearly to discuss student progress. Parent-teacher meetings help parents and teachers find ways to work together to ensure every student’s success at school.
The teacher will probably show parents some samples of their child's work, and may discuss their child's progress, marks, homework and behaviour. The teacher may also ask parents about any concerns that they have about a student and discuss any extra support, or extension, programs being provided for that student. The meeting is also an opportunity for parents to ask questions about their child's progress and to find out if their child is having difficulty with anything in particular.
Some suggestions to ensure a positive and successful parent-teacher meeting may include:
- Talk with your child about how school is going for them before the meeting
- Prepare a few notes/ questions about what you’d like to discuss with the teacher
- Be on time and stay calm
- Ask for explanations of anything you don't understand
- Respectfully discuss differences of opinion
- Create an action plan
- After the meeting, talk about the conference with your child. Emphasize the positive points, and be direct about problems that were discussed. If you and the teacher created an action plan, explain it to your child. Make sure that your child understands that you and the teacher created this plan to help them. Keep in touch with the teacher.
If you need to, further meetings can be organised with the teacher. At Dayboro we know that teachers and parents working together as a team enhances the chances of school being a happy and successful learning environment for everyone.

CHAPPY CHAT – Harmony Week
Being part of many cultures can get complicated at times. Children may find there are differences in values and expectations. Sometimes there might be difficult choices. When different sets of expectations don’t match, it can make it hard for children to feel like they belong. When cultural differences are respected and a sense of belonging develops, there are many benefits to mental health and wellbeing for children, families and schools. By working together, schools and families can help children from all cultural backgrounds to understand, respect and appreciate diversity in others. Helping children to understand difference encourages them to feel good about themselves, understand where they fi t in the world, and appreciate diversity in others. When adults behave in ways that are open and accepting it can help to teach children to respect diversity and embrace individual differences. Everybody needs to feel accepted, respected and included. Feeling welcome and at home in both cultures is very important for positive mental health and wellbeing. Australia is home to people from many different cultural backgrounds. Creating a positive sense of community for everyone involves learning to understand and appreciate others’ values, experiences and beliefs so that together we can build a caring and accepting society that supports mental health and wellbeing.
Parenting is rarely easy. Being a parent in a new country has added challenges. Just as it can be difficult for children to learn to be part of two cultures, learning to parent ‘between’ cultures can be stressful for families too. Being open to adapt your parenting to suit your child’s individual needs, and your own, can be beneficial for all families.
What can you do as a parent/carer?
Tell your children stories to help them to develop a strong cultural identity and share a sense of pride in your culture. Talk to children about the Australian cultural values you appreciate. This will help them see how they can be part of both cultures.
Seek support and advice from people you trust. Talking with relatives and friends who understand your values can help you think through the different problems you might face as a parent.
You can contact your child’s school if you have any questions about your child or their education. Schools welcome questions from parents and carers.
Take an active interest in activities at your child’s school. Get to know your child’s teacher and look for ways to get involved at school, for example, by helping in the classroom or by joining parent working groups.
If children complain of being teased or bullied, be sure to tell your child’s teacher so the school can take action to stop it.
Just before I go.....With the recent tragic events that have occurred in New Zealand, there might be questions your children are asking. Below is an article that may be of interest to you on how to talk to our kids about world trauma.
Have a great week!
See you around the school.
