Dear Parents and Caregivers,
As another busy school year draws to a close, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your cooperation and support this year. To say the least, it has been a challenging and eventful year for our school community with the advent of COVID-19.
As educators, we rely on parent support in all that we do to help students be the very best they can be and we value the partnerships we build together as we watch children grow and develop during their primary school years. I would like to particularly acknowledge the support our school received during the home-schooling phase of the lockdown. It was a massive community undertaking to completely change the mode of educational delivery in such a short timeframe. Thank you to everyone for working with us so well.
For those leaving the Dayboro family, we wish you well , particularly our Year 6 students as they head off to Junior Secondary, and those families finishing up with us, with their youngest children graduating this year.
On behalf of the school staff, I would like to wish everyone a wonderful festive season and a happy new year. School recommences on Wednesday 27 January 2021 for students.
Final School Assembly and Year 6 Graduation
Our Year 6 students will be farewelled at a Graduation Ceremony on Monday 7 December commencing at 9.30am in our Covered Sports Area. Covid-19 restrictions have required some changes to our usual format. Our final school assembly for 2020 will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday 8 December. Unfortunately due to Covid-19 restrictions, parents are unable to attend this event. At this time, the school leaders for 2021 will be announced. Photographs and announcements will be posted on our school Facebook site shortly afterwards.
Classes for Next Year
Classes for next year are being developed and will be available on Thursday 21 January from 8.45am outside the School Administration. All classes are DRAFT until the Day 8 School Staffing Census and are subject to change.
On the same morning between 9:00-10:00am, teachers will be in their classrooms and the opportunity is available for parents and students to meet teachers and drop off book packs. At the time of writing COVID-19 restrictions will apply including signing in at the school office and restricting the number of people attending classrooms at any one time. This will be the only time available as teachers will be involved in a Student Free Day program at all other times.
COVID-19 Plans and our School in 2021
We are going to leave announcing any specific plans for our school operations until the week commencing 18 January as some changes may occur during the holiday period. This includes drop-offs for our new Preps and school times. Our plan for the new school year will be announced on Facebook and via a newsletter emailed to parents in the week of 18 January.
Class Break-up Day Parties and Uniforms
Teachers have made individual arrangements for class parties, which will be held on Tuesday 8 December. We have been advised that COVID-19 restrictions apply relating to the sharing of food on this day. The usual ‘buffet’ style enjoyed by students is not an option this year and parents are encouraged to provide food which can be easily distributed in individual serves by our teachers and teacher aides. Food such as potato chips and dips would be difficult in this respect.
Please contact your child’s teacher if any further information is needed.
Students are invited to be in free dress for both Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 December. Although Wednesday is a normal school day, part of the time will be allocated towards preparing classrooms for the following year and may include some cleaning activities.
Reporting to Parents
Report Cards for Semester 2 will be emailed to parents on Monday 7 December after 2pm. Parents with the QParents app are also able to access the report cards at this time. If anyone requires a ‘hard copy’ of the report card, please contact the school office.
Please be aware that the way that schools report is mandated, meaning we follow particular rules regarding structure and reporting elements. I want to ensure that you are clear about the standards we, as an Education QLD school use, particularly in relation to your child’s performance as indicated by the “achievement” column:
A or VHA Standard – The student has performed EXCEPTIONALLY well and has produced a very high standard of work.
B or HA Standard – The student has achieved an EXCELLENT result and has produced a high standard of work.
C or S Standard – The student is performing at the age appropriate standard and is performing at the EXPECTED level. The term “satisfactory” or “sound” is used.
D Standard - Student is DEVELOPING skills and knowledge required to reach age appropriate level. Students receiving this result may require some additional assistance and support during class.
E or Support required – Student requires significant additional staff/parental support in the future to be able to reach age appropriate levels at this stage.
When viewing your child’s report cards, it is important to take note of the effort grades. The “Effort” grades are a significant indicator of whether the student is consistently achieving to their potential. For example, an “A” for effort and a “C” for achievement indicates that your child is “on target” for their age and “applying their best effort”. This grade should be celebrated with students because they have worked hard to achieve year level expectations.
School Watch
With the school holidays approaching, please keep an eye on our school. Sergeant Ken has once again enlisted the support of volunteers to keep watch over our school during this holiday period.
If anyone sees anything suspicious, this can be reported to School Watch on 131788.

Please note that the list below is current as of 1 December and that class structures and teachers can change as enrolments fluctuate. If a change occurs, it will be communicated via the school Facebook page.

Dear Families and Friends
COMMUNITY
Well, the term and year is almost over……
Swimming Carnivals- completed!
School Photos– successful!
Sushi Day- will be delicious!
Graduation Morning- almost there!
As always at this time of year, I am again reminded of my favourite quote:
“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” Helen Keller
While this year has been very different and our usual band of helpers have not been able to be at school for a long time, there are still many people working busily behind the scenes to make sure that our students don’t miss out on anything. Many thanks to our Banking, Tuckshop and P&C helpers who contribute so much and have worked so hard to make sure some of our favourite events and some new ones like the Colour Run and Dad’s Tuckshop Day happen. You all help to make a difference and contribute to the success of our students in so many areas.
Many thanks!
Also, while Dayboro students continued to shine academically this year and excelled in a range of extra-curricular pursuits, what continues to define our students is their excellent commitment to the values and behaviour codes of our school. The support of parents is also highly important in ensuring our expectations around being safe, respectful and learners are constantly upheld. So...Thank you students and parents for making Dayboro a great school!
Finally …. I could not do an end of year Newsletter without personally thanking our Student Leaders and the other Yr 6 students who have been invaluable in the journey at Dayboro this year- thank you to Georgia, Zeke, Sophie and Zac, as well as all the Yr 6 Sports and Music leaders and cohort. Thank you all for your helpfulness and responsible ways. All of you really do demonstrate and model for others Responsibility, Safety and Learning in so many ways but most of all you are wonderful humans and I wish you all the best for your future at High School. You will all shine!!!
EXCITING WRITING
At Dayboro one of our curriculum priorities has been to help all students improve in the area of writing. Teacher and students have been focussed on improving engagement and creativity in our students as writers. We have nurtured and celebrated every student as an author this year and all students have writing goals to work towards. We even had our own D.S.S. Writing Competition and an Author’s Chair for children to share their award winning books. These are now kept in our library. In 2021 our main priority area will again be writing. We will be celebrating writing in all its’ different forms and aim to identify and extend talented authors that exist in every classroom.
PREP
We have now finished our 2021 Prep Orientation process. We enjoyed meeting all our new Prep parents and children for 2021. Thank you for taking advantage of this valuable opportunity to visit our school and learn more about our Prep classrooms.
Enrolments for 2021 are still being considered so please if you have an eligible Prep child for 2021 or know someone who does, come and enrol as soon as possible.

The International Day of People with a Disability is December 3, 2020. The theme for 2020 is “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”. Dayboro, let’s continue to break down barriers for people with a disability.
On behalf of our families, students and staff, we’d like to acknowledge Mrs Carmel Bridger who has worked tirelessly to provide inclusion support to our students over a number of years at Dayboro SS. Mrs Bridger is retiring and we hope that she enjoys some well-deserved time with her family. We’d also like to acknowledge Ms Ky Mather, a highly skilled inclusion support teacher aide who is taking leave. Both ladies go above and beyond for our students and families and we wish them well.
All of the students have made incredible gains with their personal goals and are ready for their new classes in 2021. Thank you to all of the wonderful families that we have worked with in 2020.

Last week’s challenge in maker space was a bridge building competition. The challenge was to build a bridge supporting as many teddy counters as possible using only 4 paper cups and unlimited paddle pop sticks. A wide range of designs were developed, and Poppy and Heidi in year 6 took the prize with 112 teddy counters balanced on their bridge.

The Hama beads Christmas decoration table continues to be a very busy place – we have been very impressed with the intricate designs being pieced together by the students. The board games have peaked in popularity again and it is great to see so many children playing these games cooperatively.

Summer Reading Club
The State Library of Queensland is once again hosting their Summer Reading Club over the holiday break. Their free, fun reading program is being hosted on-line for the first time. More information can be found at the Summer Reading Club website:
Students who would like to have a printed copy of the reading challenges are welcome to collect one for the holiday break – we would love to reward children with completed reading challenge cards when school resumes in 2021.

End of Year Book Returns
A reminder that any Library loans are now overdue and need to be returned as soon as possible. Checking obvious locations often yields the best results – toy boxes, book shelves at home and at school, school bags, in the car etc.
Wishing all of our students and their families a safe and relaxing holiday break,
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
Dear Parents and Caregivers
It has been great seeing so many children participating enthusiastically in Christmas crafts. It has also been great seeing older children helping younger children through the process and working together to clean up at the end.
A reminder to please ensure the gates into the service are closed after entering/departing. This is to ensure we remain compliant with National Regulations and keep all children in attendance safe. We thank you for your co-operation with this.
Due to COVID-19, we are continuing our sign in/sign out area outside of the service; this means adults are not permitted to enter the building. Families will be informed when this restriction has been lifted and we appreciate your patience with this.
Vacation care is coming around fast – please ensure you are booking your spots in to help us plan each day effectively. Children will need to be enrolled prior to booking for these sessions. Please see below for how to enrol. We have attached our program for your perusal. Please be advised that the service will be closed from 6pm Friday 18th December and will re-open at 6:30am Monday 4th January 2021. Bookings for re-opening will need to be confirmed prior to this closure to ensure we are able to plan appropriately.
Families will be notified via kidsoft when bookings for 2021 will open. Please ensure you have access to your portal or kidsoft app to do this.
Lastly, on behalf of our team we would like to extend a big congratulations to our graduating year six children. It has been a pleasure being a part of your journey and we wish you all the very best in high school and beyond.
Would you like to join in our exciting morning and afternoon sessions? Vacancies are available for both morning and afternoon sessions and we welcome all children and families to the service.
To enrol your child, please visit www.helpinghandsnetwork.com.au, selecting Dayboro as your service and following the prompts to access the iParent Portal. If you have any issues, please contact Jenny at the service on 0459 991 697 or our customer accounts on 1300 612 462.
