Dear Parents and Caregivers
Welcome back to Term 2.
It goes without saying that it is certainly a different start to the term with our move to remote on-line learning. As mentioned in my previous communications, our teachers have risen to the challenge and have completed an incredible amount of work and training to bring these programs to students this term. For this reason, our community has to feel very proud of the commitment of our staff in changing the whole face of teaching to one which assists with the reduction of the Covid-19.
Can I thank the parent community for your wonderful support during the past few weeks. We were always going to experience teething issues, but thank you to everyone for engaging with the communications which have been forwarded out and assisting us to implement a completely different way of teaching in Term 2.
As stated by our Premier, this mode of education delivery will remain in place until the end of Week 5 (May 22) when a decision will be made on how the rest of the term will look.
Thank you to everyone for your continued support.
Garry Drummond
Principal
Dear Families and Friends
Well, yesterday was very historic for us all!!!
Our teachers have done an awesome job at setting up their Virtual Classrooms.
The majority of our students working from home were able to log into the Learning Place correctly and were able to get started working on the daily plan from their teachers. Virtual Classrooms are the preferred way of working for our students at home.
The “How to” is again detailed below for you all.
Three very important details to note:
- Please log in to the child’s Virtual Classroom before 11am, at the latest, each day. You do not need to notify the office or class teacher if you are logging into the Virtual Classroom. We can see who and exactly when students are logged in every day.
- If your student is not accessing their Virtual Classroom ie. Using the learning@home website or using paper copies of workbooks etc. then you will need to ring the office, email the teacher or Admin. or send a message to Q Parents every day. They will not be marked as absent. They will be marked as- In attendance- Learning at home. But we need to know they are home being supervised every day.
- If your child is sick and will not be doing any work from home then you also need to ring the Absence line and let us know the reason.
Accessing Virtual Classrooms
Virtual Classrooms are hosted by Education Queensland through The Learning Place. Classroom teachers have full control over the contents of each virtual classroom and students are able to collaborate and communicate with their teacher, and one another, through this site.
To find their virtual classroom students can Google “The Learning Place” or go directly to The Learning Place website. The preferred browsers for access are Fire Fox, Google Chrome, Edge or Safari. Do not use Internet Explorer.
Click the link on the right hand side of the page for eLearn (Blackboard) – see below. Students working from home will then be prompted to type in their MIS username and password. This information was recently sent home in an envelope with all students in P-3. You should have kept it safe and you will need to find it as this is your only way for logging in. Teachers do not keep copies of these passwords.
Students in Years 4 – 6 regularly use their own credentials to log-in to the computers at school and should be able to recall their own username and password.
Once eLearn (Blackboard) opens, a list of courses (or virtual classrooms) will appear on the right hand side of the screen. Select the course required from the list e.g. 5M Virtual Classroom.
You are then ready to access the resources and communicate with the teacher of that class.
** Please make sure when using external links, that students are adequately supervised.
If you have trouble accessing the Learning Place there could be intermittent connection issues. If this is the case try again later. You can still go to the learning@home website to access resources. This is not the same as accessing the Virtual Classroom though and will not log your attendance online.
The Education Queensland Website-Curriculum- learning@home.
The link has also been sent to all parents via text.
*Once in this site there are several important tabs to visit. See headings below:
Well Being of Students - how a typical day should be spent learning at home.
English- organised in year levels and click on learning activities
Mathematics - organised in year levels and click on learning activities.
Learning Resources - STEM, HASS and the Arts- organised in curriculum areas with links to support children’s learning.
There is no username or password required to access these online materials and they will be updated every 2 weeks.
These resources are provided by Education Queensland and give the appropriate and recommended lessons/ worksheets for children to work from at home.
Students will also be able to access their usual online learning programs- Spelling City and Mathletics using their own usernames and passwords as per usual.
For Sunshine Online there is a generic username and password.
Username : dayboross
Password: sunshine
Please remember that children are expected to wait in the CSA before School between 8:15am until the bell goes at 8:40am. The children are supervised during this time. There should not be children playing on equipment or waiting outside classrooms before this time. This is especially important at this current time as we are not having Assemblies and important messages are being relayed in the CSA before students go to class. All children are being marked on the roll in the CSA and then being sent to different classroom Hubs. In the afternoons they will meet their parents in their usual meeting place.
Some ideas for coping at home:
- Set realistic schoolwork hours- we have sent home recommended times for different areas.
- Include physical activity at a few stages in the day.
- Make sure you set aside time for snacks and lunch break times.
- Have a reading time. Read a book, outside, in a comfy space, on their own or with an adult.
- Plan a creative activity such as drawing, playdough time or playing with Lego.
- Allow time to socialise with friends via apps, phone calls or even computer games. Set up with friends to eat lunch and chat together
- Plan some daily chores for them
- Work on a larger project-eg. plant a herb garden.
Thank you Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Invoices: Excursions and Camps
The Life Education incursion has unfortunately been cancelled this term due to COVID-19. All invoices will be cancelled. All payments made for this will be credited to the students account, as per the Dayboro SS Refund Policy.
All credits on student accounts are able to be used towards future excursions or camps. Students who are leaving at the end of 2020 will be refunded the credit amount to the parent bank accounts. In this instance, parents will be contacted and sent the ‘request for refund form’ in Term 4.
For further queries regarding credits and refunds, please don’t hesitate to contact the school and speak to me.
Kind regards,
Clare Gault
Business Manager
Welcome back to Term 2!
This will be a challenging week for all as students, teachers and parents settle into the new routines of Remote Learning. Teachers and school staff have been
working hard to plan for this approach and have developed learning programs that best suit the students at our school.
Printed student learning materials requested by parents without internet or device accessibility last term are at the office ready for collection. Please be aware that these materials are designed to cover the first five weeks of school (Maths Workbook and English activities) so parents will not need to come up to the school each week to collect more.
Together we will be learning and doing all we can to support you in this new mode of home-based learning.
Regards, Linda Smith
(Head of Department-Curriculum)
Library and Maker Space Online
Along with the Virtual Classroom spaces created by classroom teachers, we have also created a Dayboro State School Virtual Library and Maker Space. Once students have logged in to the Learning Place they can access the Virtual Library from the same area as their Virtual Classroom. We have a range of resources available to students including Cyber Safety information to help students learn about being safe online. We also have links to some websites that offer audio books for free; listening to books is a fantastic way to engage with stories!
Check in regularly to access new information and resources about community events and activities – this week we have some activities relating to Earth Day (April 22) and ANZAC Day (April 25).
We have included a link to the Moreton Bay Region Libraries site. Residents of Moreton Bay are able to join the council libraries free of charge (this can be done online). A range of digital resources can be accessed through the Moreton Bay Region Libraries, including eBooks, audio books, eMagazines, and more.
We would love to hear about the books you are reading! You can add to our “Good Reads” blog and make reading recommendations to other students; this could be a regular book or an eBook.
Dayboro State School Celebrates 100 Years on Heathwood Hill
Did you know that 100 years ago Dayboro State School moved from its location at Terror’s Creek to its current site on McKenzie Street? The official opening date of the building at the new site was June 25th, 1920. While the building looks a little different today because of the extensions that have been added, the original building is still being used by our students! The first building constructed on our school grounds is currently used as our LEAP room (the space next to 2M).
Each week we will add photos and information in the Virtual Library showing how our school has changed over the last 100 years in the lead up to our centenary celebrations.
Upcoming Library Events
At this stage, the Premier’s Reading Challenge is set to go ahead with the reading period for the challenge commencing on May 11th. When reading recording sheets become available, we will post a digital copy in the Virtual Library for students to access.
National Simultaneous Storytime is scheduled for Wednesday May 27th. For the last few years we have had hosted a National Simultaneous Storytime morning in the hall where we listen to the story and then join in with a variety of activities. This year we will not be able to hold National Simultanous Storytime in this way. During the week of National Simultaneous Storytime we will have a link available where students will be able to watch the story being read online. We already have some resources available in the Virual Library but keep an eye out for more activities in the coming weeks.
Changes to Upcoming Library Events
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions many of the upcoming annual Library events have had to be postponed until Term 4.
Our school Book Fair has been moved to October 9 – 14 (early Term 4)
Book Week will now be held from October 17 – 23 (Term 4).
Unfortunately the Readers Cup Competition for 2020 has been cancelled. Our very excited reading team had already been selected and had started reading the assigned books. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm Lucy, Rose, Poppy and Pippy – hopefully you gained enjoyment from the books you had already started reading.
Book Club
This term Scholastic (our Book Club provider) has made the decision to distribute Book Club in a completely digital format. Look out for the link to Issue 3 coming soon! At this time we can only accept digital orders and payment.
Thank you for you continued support,
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
