Library and Maker Space News
Library and Maker Space Online
Along with the Virtual Classroom spaces created by classroom teachers, we have also created a Dayboro State School Virtual Library and Maker Space. Once students have logged in to the Learning Place they can access the Virtual Library from the same area as their Virtual Classroom. We have a range of resources available to students including Cyber Safety information to help students learn about being safe online. We also have links to some websites that offer audio books for free; listening to books is a fantastic way to engage with stories!
Check in regularly to access new information and resources about community events and activities – this week we have some activities relating to Earth Day (April 22) and ANZAC Day (April 25).
We have included a link to the Moreton Bay Region Libraries site. Residents of Moreton Bay are able to join the council libraries free of charge (this can be done online). A range of digital resources can be accessed through the Moreton Bay Region Libraries, including eBooks, audio books, eMagazines, and more.
We would love to hear about the books you are reading! You can add to our “Good Reads” blog and make reading recommendations to other students; this could be a regular book or an eBook.
Dayboro State School Celebrates 100 Years on Heathwood Hill
Did you know that 100 years ago Dayboro State School moved from its location at Terror’s Creek to its current site on McKenzie Street? The official opening date of the building at the new site was June 25th, 1920. While the building looks a little different today because of the extensions that have been added, the original building is still being used by our students! The first building constructed on our school grounds is currently used as our LEAP room (the space next to 2M).
Each week we will add photos and information in the Virtual Library showing how our school has changed over the last 100 years in the lead up to our centenary celebrations.
Upcoming Library Events
At this stage, the Premier’s Reading Challenge is set to go ahead with the reading period for the challenge commencing on May 11th. When reading recording sheets become available, we will post a digital copy in the Virtual Library for students to access.
National Simultaneous Storytime is scheduled for Wednesday May 27th. For the last few years we have had hosted a National Simultaneous Storytime morning in the hall where we listen to the story and then join in with a variety of activities. This year we will not be able to hold National Simultanous Storytime in this way. During the week of National Simultaneous Storytime we will have a link available where students will be able to watch the story being read online. We already have some resources available in the Virual Library but keep an eye out for more activities in the coming weeks.
Changes to Upcoming Library Events
Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions many of the upcoming annual Library events have had to be postponed until Term 4.
Our school Book Fair has been moved to October 9 – 14 (early Term 4)
Book Week will now be held from October 17 – 23 (Term 4).
Unfortunately the Readers Cup Competition for 2020 has been cancelled. Our very excited reading team had already been selected and had started reading the assigned books. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm Lucy, Rose, Poppy and Pippy – hopefully you gained enjoyment from the books you had already started reading.
Book Club
This term Scholastic (our Book Club provider) has made the decision to distribute Book Club in a completely digital format. Look out for the link to Issue 3 coming soon! At this time we can only accept digital orders and payment.
Thank you for you continued support,
Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs H.
