Our 2025 Strategic Planning – The Teaching of Reading
As I have been writing about, we have been steadily working towards our explicit improvement agenda: Precision in the teaching of reading and a focus on positive student engagement.
This week, we sent some of our Reading Working Party members to a Collaborative Learning Community (CLC) professional briefing so that we can work with other schools on our first key priority:
To implement a whole school approach to the teaching of reading through implementation of the Australian Curriculum (V9) in English.
We were able to plan as a team, connect with regional staff to support us and gathered some ideas to bring back to our larger Reading Working Party to continue implementing here at DSS.
This information below could help you to keep updated on the changes we are making to our reading instruction here at Dayboro State School:
With the implementation of version 9 of the Australian Curriculum in schools this year, this has seen a renewed and consistent approach to the teaching of reading using the Simple View of Reading Model and Scarborough’s Reading Rope through an explicit instructional approach.
The Simple View of Reading Model
The Simple View of Reading states that reading comprehension (the ability to understand text) is the product of word reading and language comprehension. Please read Dee’s Curriculum Chat below for further details about the research behind the Teaching of Reading…. especially Scarborough’s Reading Rope which will provide some of the theory behind the Simple View of Reading Model.
Here at Dayboro State School, our Prep-Year 2 teachers have been explicitly teaching Word Reading separately to Language Comprehension with great results. Our Year 3-6 teachers are focussed on teaching Language Comprehension through their English units.
How can you get more information? Below is a link to view a parent information session about reading in our curriculum and how you can support your child to read.
Also, here is a link to a fridge poster to help guide your support of reading at home.
Next week, at our Parent Teacher Conferences, we will be asking parents to complete a short anonymous survey about your preferences for ways to access resources about the Teaching of Reading. This will strengthen our partnerships in your child’s reading journey.
2025 School Review
As I have been discussing in the newsletter and at P&C, we will facilitate a School Led Review at Dayboro State School this year. School-led reviews aim to harness the efforts of schools to use cycles of inquiry to review their performance and progress, and collaboratively identify next steps for improvement. This evidence-based approach empowers school leaders, in partnership with their community, to lead aspects of the review process.
The National School Improvement Tool, outlines the 9 domains that we will be using to review our current practises:
We would like our community to fully engage in this process so we will be using many methods to gather your opinions and suggestions for our school. I look forward to working with our Parent Rep to ensure we are mindful of gathering a wide range of contributions. If there are any other community members who would like to be involved in the planning of this review, please contact me via email gdoug7@eq.edu.au.
Senior Cross Country!
Yesterday we persisted despite the weather and completed our Senior Cross Country Carnival. We modified by having two age groups at a time on the oval. I was impressed with the resilience of our students to participate in the modified way. Dayboro State School students always participate enthusiastically and yesterday was no different. They cheered on others and also ran either in the competitive race or the Fun Run at the end.
Thank you to our community who turned out in the dreary weather to cheer on our runners. We also would like to thank the parents who volunteered for a job to assist our students.
We look forward to the Junior Cross Country Carnival for our Prep-Year 2 students next term, when the weather is a bit cooler.

Staffing
We have had a couple of staffing changes recently, so we thought it would be great to introduce these staff members to our commuity:
My name is Mrs Claire McInerney and I am excited to be working with Mr Benjamin Baade in 4B as their Friday class teacher. I have been teaching in the region for a number of years and am currently working as a year 4 teacher part time at Lawnton SS. In previous schools, I have taught a variety of year levels and been in varying roles throughout my 13 years in the teaching world. I have recently returned from maternity leave in 2025, and I am looking forward to lots of learning and growth with our 4B students. I am a mother to two beautiful children, wife to my amazing husband and dog mum to two cute dogs. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. We love to go on lots of adventures together. I also love to shop, walk my dogs and go to the park with my children.
Mr Rhys Thompson is currently teaching Drama Prep-Year 2 and Music in Year 3-6 classes:
Hello, my name is Mr Rhys Thompson and I am the new Arts teacher for the rest of term 1. My area of training is primarily in music, consisting of performing, writing and recording guitar and vocals within various original projects - from heavy to jazz, to folk and meditation sounds. I adore creativity and feel extremely honoured to assist the future artists of our world in finding their voices. I am a recent graduate teacher and I am excited to be involved within the Dayboro State School family.

Dear Families and Friends
HARMONY DAY AND KINDNESS WEEK

To show support for Harmony Day, which is celebrated on March 21st, we wore something orange, as orange signifies social communication, meaningful conversations, and the freedom of ideas.
At Dayboro State School we celebrate difference and embrace every students’ unique qualities and strengths. This week we took time to acknowledge the importance of the message “We all have a role to play” and reinforce this valuable ethos with all our students.
While Harmony Week is a very important event on our school calendar, it is important that we not just “talk the talk” but “walk the walk”. Every day our students and staff should be living the message that “We all have a role to play” From the first welcome every morning at the front gate, to the classroom and in the playground, Dayboro staff and students strive hard to embrace and celebrate that everyone belongs here at Dayboro.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent teacher conferences have already started. They will continue over the next two weeks. Thank you to those parents who have already organised their times and attended their conference. Our teachers go to a lot of effort to prepare for these interviews and look forward to sharing the progress of every child in their class, so it is important that all parents take the opportunity to attend.
Parent-teacher interviews at primary school: what to expect
Throughout your child’s time in primary school, you might be asked to attend parent-teacher interviews, or conferences, usually once or twice a year.
These interviews are usually just short meetings – about 10-15 minutes – between you and your child’s teacher or teachers. Every parent is invited to attend at least one interview a year. Being invited to a parent-teacher interview doesn’t mean there’s a problem with your child’s progress.
Interviews might be held during school hours, before or after school, or in the evening. It’s good to make a time when both parents can go along, if you can. If you can’t manage any of the available times, you could call the school to arrange another time.
It’s important to be on time for parent-teacher interviews. But be aware that teachers might be running late because previous interviews have run over time.
Why it’s worth going to parent-teacher interviews Parent-teacher interviews give you a great opportunity to:
- learn more about your child’s academic, emotional and social development
- meet and get to know your child’s teachers
- help your child’s teachers understand more about your child
- make plans with the teacher about how you can both support your child
- build a relationship with your child’s school
If you don’t have any particular concerns, you might wonder whether it’s worth going to parent-teacher interviews. But going along is one way to show your child that you’re interested in their learning and what’s happening for them at school.
Of course, if you do have concerns, it’s a chance for you to raise them with your child’s teacher if you haven’t done that already.
LEARNING AT DAYBORO P-2 ENGLISH UPDATE
This term we have seen the Preps, Year 1 and 2’s embrace the power of story telling and the important role great characters play in bringing a story to life.
Preps have been learning how to share stories with others (spoken of course) and make connections with characters, events and ideas that they like in the books and making connections with events that happen in their own lives.
Year 1 have been learning to share with others their opinions about a character in a story.
Year 2 have been learning to share ideas and express an opinion about a familiar character and their traits in a story.

SWIMMING – Years 2 and 4.

Yr. 2 parents are invited to come along and watch the last lesson this Friday. Swimming times are: 2C- 9:30-10 2D- 10-10:30am.
Happy Easter everyone.
Thank you
Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Curriculum Chat
Reading is one of the most researched aspects of learning and is central to our work as educators. A vast body of contemporary cognitive research provides clear direction on the most effective way to teach reading. With the implementation of version 9 of the Australian Curriculum in schools this year, this has seen a renewed and consistent approach to the teaching of reading using the Simple View of Reading Model and Scarborough’s Reading Rope through an explicit instruction approach.
The Simple View of Reading Model
The Simple View of Reading states that reading comprehension (the ability to understand text) is the product of word reading and language comprehension.
The skills needed for word reading are described as constrained, as they are a finite set of skills, whereas the skills needed for language comprehension are unconstrained, as there is no limit to the amount of language we can learn in our lifetime.
It is important to understand that reading comprehension is a product of both word reading and language comprehension rather than an accrual. If one component is poor or non-existent, then reading comprehension cannot be achieved. Being able to decode the words on a page (decoding has been explained in our previous school newsletters this year) is vital to reading comprehension, but not sufficient. Some students may be able to decode all the words on a page, but if their language skills are not developed then they will find it hard to make meaning.
The contribution of word reading and language comprehension to reading comprehension changes across the year levels. In the early years of reading development, a student’s ability to comprehend texts is largely constrained by word reading, the ability to decode the words on the page. Almost all children arrive at reading instruction with better spoken language skills than word reading skills.
Once decoding and word reading become automatic, and as the language demands of reading within the curriculum increase, the contribution of language comprehension to reading comprehension also increases.
We need to explicitly teach word reading skills so that students can decode text accurately and fluently. Similarly, we need to explicitly teach components of language comprehension to ensure students can comprehend texts.
Scarborough’s Reading Rope
Scarborough’s Reading Rope aligns with and expands on the Simple View of Reading, by identifying the major components that are woven together as students progress from novice to skilled reader. It acknowledges that skilled reading requires them to fluidly coordinate components which are developed over many years through instruction and become more automatic or fluent with practice.

End of Term Book Returns
We are very quickly approaching the end of the school term. Students are reminded to return their overdue library books before the end of the term. Students in years 4, 5, and 6 are welcome to borrow over the break.
Remember that students in years 3, 4, 5, and 6 are also able to access ebooks and audio books using Sora. Students will need their MIS username to access this resource and need to ensure they enter their school as Education Queensland. Other online libraries, such as Moreton Bay Region library accounts, can be linked through the app to provide access to a larger number of reading resources, including magazines.
Book Fair
A huge thank you to everyone who came along and supported our recent Book Fair. Over $7500 worth of books were purchased during the book fair, which is fantastic! Imagine all the reading taking place over the holidays!
All purchases at the book fair contribute to an allocation of Scholastic Rewards for our school library which we can use to purchase book titles requested by students. This year we have raised $2300 worth of rewards which we will redeem with Scholastic over the next 12 months to purchase reading resources for our school library.
Thank you for your AMAZING support of book fair!
Congratulations to all the students who submitted an entry into the “Turn a Book Character into a Wild West Cowpoke” competition. The entries were amazing and showed that everyone had put care and effort into their designs – it was so hard to choose winners. Congratulations to winners: Jonah (Year 6), Clover (Year 4) and Rose (Year 2).
The “Guess the Number of Cows” competition had two winners, both of whom correctly guessed 187 cows. Congratulations to Samson (Year 4) and Pia (Prep).
All competition winners won $15 vouchers to spend at book fair.
Have a great week!
