Thank you to our community!!!
What a relief that we avoided any major damage from Cyclone Alfred this weekend. It was wonderful to see the collective action to secure our beautiful school and make plans with the community to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all our little ones and big ones.
Thank you to the P&C for your dedication in serving up the lunches through the Tucker box on Wednesday and helping ensure that all the relevant checking and packing up was done before locking up. Appreciation also to our parents for being open with your children about the weather conditions, making it much easier at the school for staff to help keep the calm.
As we head back to school this week, we are cleaning up our site. Thanks to some of our amazing community members Katharine and Andrew, we have managed to cut up many of the large branches (still the oval to go) and clear our defrosted Tucker Box freezer (thanks Debra and Marshall or your swift clean up inside and out!).
We have had community members donating school lunches for families struggling to get supplies.
Please don’t let food be an issue for sending your children back to school. We have you covered. Thanks to our AMAZING community!!!
We have also had a delivery of items from a community member who has been working with the Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Food Bank. They have donated food parcels to our tuckshop and to Helping Hands to help out.
P&C
We decided to postpone our P&C AGM and monthly meetings until Monday 24 March. Please consider attending this AGM and getting involved this year, even as a committee member. A huge thank you to our 2024 committee who, I am sure that you will agree, lead from the front and have been an amazing support to our parent community and our school administration team and all staff. Please consider joining us for our AGM on Monday 24 March.
Our 2025 Key Priorities!
A Dayboro State School, we have been planning for and working on our two 2025 Key Priorities.
To implement a whole school approach to the teaching of reading through implementation of the Australian Curriculum (V9) in English.
- All staff are engaging in professional learning around the teaching of reading.
- Our teachers have been collaboratively planning their Reading sessions.
Our school has been chosen to participate in a Reading Collaborative Learning Community with other schools.
To promote positive student behaviour in learning through a whole school approach to student engagement and wellbeing.
- We have an established Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) team who are revieing our current DSS behaviour processes.
- We are working with a Regional PBL coach.
- We have continued to develop our Lunchtime Clubs to engage our students.
2025 School Review
Our Dayboro State School will facilitate a School Led Review in 2025.
All Queensland state schools undergo a review at least once every 4 years, generally undertaken in the year that they are due to update their 4-year strategic plan.
School-led reviews aim to harness the efforts of schools to use cycles of inquiry to review their performance and progress, and collaboratively identify next steps for improvement. This evidence-based approach empowers school leaders, in partnership with their community, to lead aspects of the review process.
A school-led review consists of 2 phases:
- evaluation conducted by the school
- validation conducted by School and Region Reviews (SRR).
This fact sheet explains the review evaluation and validation process.
We are wanting to form a team from our school community of staff, parents, community members and students to plan for and enact our school led review. Please contact me via email gdoug7@eq.edu.au if you would like to help us out by being on our planning team.
A Dayboro Learner
Last week at assembly we celebrated our students being Challenged Learners to promote a growth mindset in our classrooms. It is wonderful to see how our DSS students are challenged themselves and others.

In the next two weeks, we will be introducing Karly the Kangaroo who is a Collaborator. Being a collaborator is super important for being a successful learner. Our teachers will start doing some work next week, after the introduction at our assembly. It is super helpful for parents to also check in and encourage collaboration at home.
Parent / Teacher Partnerships
Parent /Teacher partnerships are super important to your child’s success at our school. We understand that you know your child the best and as such can help our teachers to understand their personality and motivations to support your child in their learning journey. A reminder that our Parent Teacher Conferences will be scheduled for the last week of this term. You will be able to book your conference/s through our online booking system SOBs from Monday 17 March. Please use the link: https://eq.sobs.com.au/pt3/student.php?schoolid=70654. If you would like to speak to one of our specialist teachers or inclusion teacher, you can make a booking by emailing that staff member.
Please be aware of the following organisation for our conferences:
- Bookings will close on Friday 28 March to allow for teachers to prepare their interview schedule and have your child’s work samples ready to share with you
- The two late nights for interviews are Wednesday 2 April and Thursday 3 April. These interviews will take place in our School Hall. If children are in attendance (and not involved in the conference), there will be some activities at the back of the hall to engage them with support staff supervision.
- The interviews NOT scheduled on the afternoons of 2 and 3 April, will take place in your child’s classroom. Please ensure that you keep all children with you on these occasions as we have no child minding available. Children are not permitted to be on the playgrounds before and after school.
We look forward to working together with you to support your child to thrive here at Dayboro State School.
National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy NAPLAN Year 3 and 5 students this term
Thank you for helping to prepare your children for our NAPLAN online assessments. Due to the recent weather event, we have made some changes to our year 3 and 5 online NAPLAN testing schedule. Some of our classes have not completed all of the practise assessments and so they will do this over the next few days.
Our testing schedule will now commence on Monday 17 March:
I also reattach the information brochure for parents and carers. Parents can access the NAPLAN website www.nap.edu.au/naplan. If you have any questions or concerns about these assessments, please contact your child’s class teacher, Karen Ryan and myself so that we can discuss or clarify details.
Uniforms
Can I please congratulate our families on ensuring that our DSS students are wearing their uniforms with pride? As we head into cooler months, I wanted to remind you that students need to wear a Dayboro State School jumper or jacket or a plain navy blue jumper clearly marked with their name. We have discussed at assembly many times that club jumpers are not part of our school uniform. If you child needs an appropriate jumper to wear to school, we will loan then one from our office supplies. Club jumpers or non-navy blue jumpers will be asked to be removed.
Thanks for your help with this. We are all part of the Dayboro State School Team!
School Calendar
Please find attached our latest version (V7) of our Parent Calendar to support you to stay informed about all of our school events.
Have a great week!
Gabrielle
Dear Families and Friends
Representing our school with pride
It is important to remember that whenever we go to sporting events, high school visits, swimming lessons, camps or are just out and about in the community, our students are expected to represent their school with pride. This is an important part of being RESPECTFUL. This expectation can be shown in many different ways, from wearing the correct uniform to being considerate of others in the community. The feeling we get when someone outside of our school says, “Wow! Those Dayboro kids are really well-mannered” or “I am really impressed with their behaviour”, is really encouraging and something to be celebrated.
A few ways you can encourage your child to represent their school with pride is:
- ensuring they are wearing the correct uniform and it’s neat and tidy;
- discussing behaviours that are appropriate when out in the community;
- role-playing scenarios of interactions with others; and
- talking positively with your child about their school experiences and encouraging them to talk and think positively about their school.
Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of your children and equip them with the skills to
BE RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL, POSITIVE, PROUD, KIND, TOLERANT citizens.
Please remember that children are expected to wait in the CSA before School between 8:15am until the bell goes at 8:40am. The children are supervised during this time.
There should not be children playing on equipment or waiting outside classrooms before this time. A reminder that all mobile phones and Ipads should be put away in bags on entry and exiting the school. They should then be handed to the class teacher on arrival to class.
BUS BEHAVIOUR
It has come to our attention that some students have been behaving inappropriately on the buses. The bus driver has a very important job to do and that is to get our students safely home. They cannot be distracted by students that cannot control their own behaviours. Please talk to your students about appropriate behaviours on the bus such as sitting still, (not moving around) talking quietly to the person beside them (not shouting at others) and certainly keeping their hand and feet to themselves (not hitting or contacting others with objects). Please help to keep all our students safe by reinforcing with your students how important it is that the bus driver can concentrate and get our students to and from school safely.
NAPLAN
A reminder that Years 3 and 5 will be taking part in the annual NAPLAN Online assessments from Monday 17th March until Friday 21st March. Please try to ensure that students are on time especially during this period and also please limit outside appointments during school time and planned absences if possible.
Playgroup is on every Friday morning. 9am starting at the Helping Hands house. Come along and join in the fun!
Year 2 and 4 Swimming
A reminder that because swimming for Years 2 and 4 was cancelled last week. They will now be swimming in Week 9 as well. Thursday 27th March and Friday 28th March will now be swimming days as well.
Thank you Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Reading - how you can help your child
Your child may bring home texts to practise their word reading skills. If your child is having difficulty decoding a word, model saying the sound represented by each letter and blending the sounds to read the word. For example: for the word ‘cat’, point to each letter and provide the sound it represents /c/ /a/ /t/, then blend the sounds to read ‘cat’.
Texts may also contain some high-frequency words that your child has been taught. High-frequency words are words that are common in English texts (for example: said, the, of, is). These words are included in texts to create meaningful sentences. They may contain some letter-sound correspondences that have not yet been taught.
- As your child reads, you may notice there are words they can read automatically, while other words will need to be ‘sounded out’. When your child comes to a word they do not automatically know, you can help them by saying: ‘Say the sounds as you point to the letters. Now, blend the sounds and read the word.’ For example: for the word ‘hen’, point to the letters and provide the sounds, /h/ /e/ /n/, then blend the sounds to read ‘hen’.
- Some words will be more complex where two letters can say one sound. It is the same process for example the word ‘beach’, point to the letters and provide the sounds, /b/ea/ch/, then blend the sounds to read ‘beach’.
- If your child still has difficulty reading the word, it’s okay to tell them what the word is. Remember, they are still learning about letters and sounds and may need more practise and support. What you don’t want to do is allow them to guess the word based on the first sound or use the picture cues to try and work out the word. We want children to rely on the sounds in the word only to decode and then read the word.
- When your child is learning new letter-sound correspondences, they may read slowly, and it may look laborious. This is typical of beginning readers and is no cause for concern.
- Remember, practise is key to becoming a skilled reader. Encourage your child to read their decodable texts often and to other family members.

Also, here is a link to a fridge poster to help guide your support of reading at home.

If your child is asthmatic please remind them to take their preventer before marshalling for their race. They will be pushing themselves harder than at any other time.
Helpers
I will need parent helpers on the day to supervise a section of the course. I will rotate you around so that you do not miss any of the action. Please email me on cxmar5@eq.edu.au if you are willing to help.
If your child is interested in doing some extra training for the Cross Country, this is the permission form for them to join in afterschool.

Words of Wellbeing
Settling in for a new year, I have enjoyed watching the excitement of many students in being able to see and spend time with friends and peers again. New classrooms and teachers have been faced bravely and for many with ease. We can bring understanding to our children of that first morning rhythm needing to be found or sometimes contending daily with how we feel and what we need to do to start each day. How can we support and encourage our children, how do we meet them where they are at in positive ways, how can we support their wellbeing? We want the best for our children, we want them to flourish and thrive, we want to model what it looks like to be confident, grounded, kind, peaceful, full of integrity and good character. I would have loved to have known about this when my children were younger, so I would like to share this with you. If you would like to take this free online parenting course then click the link below. With my own children now 16, 16, 15 and 9 years old I will be doing a course here too to grow in positive approaches as a parent. I invite you to take a journey with me this year for ourselves and our families to flourish and thrive in 2025.
Another helpful link as we look at finding balance and forming better habits is from Esafety. This link is easy to navigate and one that you can step through with your child in staying safe online and may help with conversations about mindfulness in healthy amounts of screen time and online safe practices (kind, safe, curious, secure).
If you are needing any support in any area of life and your not sure where to start, feel free to send me an email Hannah.drage@cuchaplaincy.org.au or call me on 0401318153 to begin a conversation together.
Kindly,
Chappy Hannah :-)
