Welcome to our 2025 Student Leaders!
On Monday, we congratulated and awarded badges to our School Captains, House Captains and Vice Captains, Band and The Arts Captains, Indigenous Ambassador and Environmental Ambassadors at our School Leader Investiture. We are excited to work with our student leadership team as they represent our students and super importantly support our students to participate and enjoy school life. I encouraged all students to say hello to our leaders when they see them around the school and have a chat with them about any problems they are having or any ideas for our wonderful school. We know that these students are excellent listeners, and also want the very best for our community.

Our Student Council representatives, elected by their own classmates, were also inducted. Our Student Council, made up of the class representatives including our school captains and our Indigenous and Environmental Ambassadors, collect ideas and listen to the student voice from their elected classes to bring ideas and feedback to the Student Council. This group then makes decisions about how to help our students, our school and our community.
We look forward to a productive and harmonious year as these students guide our student body demonstrating their responsibility and kindness!
Welcome to our new staff!
We have welcomed a couple of new staff this year:
We are excited to introduce Louise Bishell, an experienced teacher who has joined us as one of our Year 4 teachers. Some words from Louise:
Thank you so much Dayboro for the very warm welcome. I have been teaching children from Kindergarten to Year 2 for a number of years and have done so in Darwin through to Canberra, and many places in between. I am excited to branch out and take on Year 4 this year with my very enthusiastic and engaged learners in 4L. I look forward to meeting more families around the school as I merge into the wonderful Dayboro State School team.
We also welcome Justine Deakin, our Guidance Officer working at Dayboro on Thursdays. Justine has links already to our community and wonderful school. Kathryn McGrath, our new Speech Language Pathologist, has worked at Dayboro previously. We are super excited to welcome Kathryn back.
Our Business Manager role is filled by two part-time officers. Clare Gault has of course been attached to Dayboro for a long time and returned from maternity leave last year. This year Clare will share the role with Angie Conoplia, also an experienced business manager.
Dayboro State school Explicit Improvement Agenda for 2025
Prior to school recommencing, our committed staff participated in professional learning. Part of this involved collaboration to review our 2024 DSS performance data, celebrating our successes, and to continue planning towards what is possible for 2025. We also spent some time at the end of last year looking at our community response, both parents and students in our School Opinion Survey, to analyse what the community identify as our strengths here at Dayboro SS and what areas we could strengthen.
From this professional collaboration and data analysis, we have drafted our Explicit Improvement Agenda for 2025 which we believe supports all of our students to be engaged and successful:
Precision in the Teaching of Reading in AC English (V9) promoting Student Engagement
We have also commenced drafting our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) to outline our goals as identified through key focus areas discussed by staff and community as needing prioritisation, aligning to our school’s strategic plan.
We share our two Key Priorities at our first P&C meeting, on Monday evening and are seeking feedback on the actions and strategies we will use to achieve these priorities. Our 2025 Dayboro State School Key Priorities are:
- To implement a whole school approach to the Teaching of Reading while implementing the Australian Curriculum (Version 9) in English.
- To promote positive student engagement in learning through a whole school approach to behaviour.
Our staff are engaged in two working parties to work towards achieving these key priorities and as such, are currently working on the strategies required to achieve these goals, and of course ways to measure our effectiveness. As we develop our 2025 budget, we will be focussing on the resources we will use to achieve these goals.
If you would like to provide feedback, please contact me at gdoug7@eq.edu.au.
Connecting to our community!
We will hold our Class Information Sessions for parents this afternoon to assist you in understanding the organisation of your child/ren’s classroom. If you do need to bring your children with you, you can drop them up to our school library while you attend the class session/s. Please note the following arrangement for the afternoon:
- Parents must drop off and collect from the library
- Playgrounds are out of bounds for all of our community during the sessions
- Attending children will need to bring a water bottle with them as we have no food and drink available in the library
- Year 5 and 6 students are welcome to attend the session with their parents.
Thanks for continuing to foster this partnership with your child’s teacher in your child/ren’s education!

Our Fabulous P&C
A huge shout out to our P&C team. What a great end of last year with community events like our festive Christmas Disco. Our P&C regularly bring to our meetings ideas and questions about the school organisation and learning structure to help our staff understand the community needs and wants. When we are making decisions about our school, we consult our P&C as representatives of our parents.
Would you like to help our school to partner with parents and respond to the community’s needs? Why don’t you join us for our next P&C meeting 10 March 6:30pm following our AGM. We meet at the school and also have a Teams meeting option.
Our next meeting will commence with the annual AGM, we will be electing our new committee members. Our current committee has been amazing at collaborating and supporting community. This group is super welcome and so dedicated to making Dayboro SS a great place for all of our students and community.
All welcome! Please like the DSS P&C Facebook page for more details.
Away for the day
As established in 2024, all Queensland state school students must keep their mobile phones switched off and ‘away for the day’ during school hours. As soon as students arrive at school, all students with a mobile phone are required to turn their phone off and hand it in to their teacher or lower school students to the office. Students then collect their phones at 3:00pm.
As outlined in our Student Code of Conduct, smart watches and other devices may be worn, but notifications, must be switched off so that phone calls, messages and other notifications cannot be sent or received during school hours. It is important that students who do wear a wearable device know how to turn those notifications off. This includes during lesson times and break times, as well as other school activities including excursions, camps, sporting events, etc.
As usual, if parents need to communicate with their children during the school day, this will be facilitated through the school office. Thanks for helping your child/ren understand these important restrictions.
Have a great week!
Gabrielle
Dear Families and Friends
Every year Dayboro State School students learn about our High Five Strategies. These strategies are tools students can use in the playground and school environment to help deal with conflict or a problem situation with other students.
We encourage our students to start at number one when dealing with a problem with their peers and work through the steps until the problem is resolved or needs further assistance.
When a student feels they are in a situation of conflict or disagreement they can do the High Five:
- Talk Friendly – use respectful words to tell the person about the problem in a calm way and suggest ways to solve the problem.
- Talk Firmly – Use a serious voice without yelling to get the message across. Don’t smile or wave arms about. Be assertive but don’t give put downs.
- Ignore – Look away. Don’t smile. Distract yourself by thinking of something else. Do not speak any further with the person.
- Walk Away – Move away from the student involved in the problem. Find a friend or go to the playground or library.
- Report – Ask a teacher for help. In the playground look for the teacher on duty with a high five poster on the back of their folder. Explain the problem to them in an honest way. Tell the teacher the strategies you have used already.

Playgroup is back. Starts this Friday 9am at the Helping Hands House. It’s a great opportunity for parents of younger children in our community to meet and have their children engage in high quality play-based learning and socialisation activities provided by a trained facilitator, usually a member of our school staff.
If this is something you would be interested in attending with your younger child, please let us know and call our office 34256111 and please leave your name, email and phone number so we can add you to our email group. Email is our preferred communication to let you know when Playgroup is on and if any events are coming up.
Now that the days are starting to get warmer please remember that it is an expectation that all children wear hats during play times and PE lessons. The rule is “No Hat, no Play!”
Children that do not wear hats are expected to be in the CSA areas during break times.

Swimming starts this term for Yr. 2 and 4 students at the Dayboro pool. Classes 2D, 2C, 4L and 4B will be swimming from Week 4 until Week 8. They will swim every Thursday and Friday for a 1/2hr lesson for 5 weeks. Consents were emailed last week. Once consents are finalised invoices will be sent.
These lessons are an important part of our curriculum and all students are expected to attend. A bathing cap and sun shirt are required. The swimming timetable is below.
Thank you Mrs Ryan!
Our Vision: “To inspire students to reach their full potential in a safe, caring and educationally challenging environment.”
Business Managers for 2025
This year our dynamic duo of Business Managers are Angie Conoplia and Clare Gault. Clare returned to Dayboro last year, after a hiatus on Maternity Leave and some relieving stints at other schools. Clare is working part-time (Wednesday to Friday) in the role whilst adjusting to life as a working mother of two. We welcome Angie to our team, who has replaced Dee Camm in the BM position. Angie is working Monday and Tuesdays and comes to us from various Primary and High Schools across our region.
For all questions relating finance and facilities at the school, please contact Angie or Clare via email bsm@dayboross.eq.edu.au.
Excursions
This year to ensure we are aligning with Departmental policies; all parents must provide consent for their child/ren to attend excursions prior to receiving an invoice. This means you will no longer receive the invoice as well as the consent information at the same time. Please ensure you provide your consent to all excursions promptly to allow our teams to invoice correctly, leaving families enough time to process payment.
All consents/permissions must be provided via Qparents. If you are not yet signed up to Qparents, we strongly encourage you to do so. If you are having any difficulties with Qparents, please contact Jill in the office for assistance.
Invoices Due:
Students have been invoiced for the following activities:
Year Level |
Excursion Name |
Cost |
Payment Due Date |
Year 2 & 4 |
Swimming |
$111.00 |
Wednesday 19th February |
As we now must gain consent prior to invoicing students, only students who have provided consent will have received an invoice. If you are yet to receive an invoice, please contact Angie Conoplia or Clare Gault.
If you have a credit on your child’s account (including siblings), you can use the credit for the above excursion. To check the credit amount, please contact the school prior to making payment.
Payment plans are always available for parents and caregivers. To arrange a payment plan, please contact the school and request to speak to one of the Business Managers. We are always willing to assist families to ensure every student has access to every opportunity.
Payment Methods & How to Pay
Dayboro State School accepts and encourages the below payment methods:
-
Qkr! by Masterpass.
Download the QKR! App and register.
-
Qparents
Payment can be made directly on Qparents. If you are not yet signed up, we encourage you to sign up today.
-
BPOINT
You can use BPOINT in two different ways:
- Clicking on the link on the invoice, which will take you directly to the BPOINT page.
- Payment by phone using credit/debit card via BPOINT: 1300 631 073
-
In Person
You can still opt to pay in person. Please note, we encourage using EFTPOS over the use of Cash, particularly in this current climate. If you are choosing to use cash, please ensure it is the correct amount as our office does not hold cash on site for change.
If students are paying by cash, please ensure they bring it directly to the office and wait for a receipt. At no time should a student give any money to classroom teachers for excursions, teachers will redirect them to the office to pay.
Kind regards,
Angie Conoplia and Clare Gault
Business Managers
Thanks so much to everyone who has actioned their QParents invitations. I know there are some that are having problems and I have forwarded all those that I know of to EQ's IT people and they are going to help me get them sorted. Thank you for your patience if you are experiencing difficulties - we WILL get there.
If you are having any problems, please come and see me or give me a call and we will get to the bottom of it.
Below are some information flyers about QParents for your perusal.
Have a great week
Jill
Welcome back to school for another year everyone and a VERY special welcome to our brand new families and little learners who are joining their formal learning journey for the very first time.
The beginning of the year is an exciting one for our learning as we look down the barrel of a big year full of learning opportunities and potential.
Over the last two weeks your children would have found out what they will be learning about over the term as teachers build the contexts for their different units of teaching and learning. This is an exciting time for our learners but it can also be overwhelming. When school starts back parents are keen to hear all about what their child has been doing and what they have been learning about and at times disappointed if their child cannot share much information with them. So, I suggest parents keep their questions simple but targeted to avoid the classic responses of ‘good’ or ‘nothing’ from your little ones. So instead of saying ‘What did you do today at school?’, perhaps narrow that down to ‘what writing did you do today?’ or ‘what was your favourite thing you read today?’ or ‘what was the favourite part of your maths lesson today?’.
Over the last two weeks teachers have been collecting some diagnostic information at the start of the year in order to:
- help them understand the support your child may need in their learning and
- choose the most appropriate class groups they can place your child in to target their learning needs from the beginning of the year.
Over the beginning weeks of school, teachers are also discussing and planning learning goals for this term with our students. It gives them small, continuous and measurable targets for their learning throughout the term. These learning goals are another thing you could ask them about their learning down the track. One way you can support your child around the area of goal setting is by helping them set other goals in their life this year such as goals for their sports or playing music etc.
I look forward to sharing information with you about the wonderful teaching and learning at Dayboro State School over this year.
Dee Mathiesen
Head of Curriculum
On behalf of the P&C, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our Dayboro State School families. Whether you are returning or new to our school community, it can be both exciting and a little overwhelming for everyone. The P&C is made up of a group of fellow parents and we will endeavour to work with the school to help you all during this time of transitioning back in to school routines.
Who are we?
The P&C is a dedicated group made up of parents, staff and community members who volunteer their time to enhance the school experience for every student. Throughout the year, we arrange and host a variety of events, including social, learning and fundraising activities, all aimed at benefiting our students. We also operate two key services within the school, the Uniform Shop and Tuckshop.
If you see any of us around the school, please feel free to say hi! We look forward to getting to know you all throughout the year and are happy to help with any questions you may have.

There is a guide on how register over on our Facebook page and I have also attached a How To Register guide for School24 which gives you a step by step guide for registering. If you have any troubles, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the school office or a P&C member.
The Dayboro Tuckerbox (Open Wednesdays and Fridays)
Our Tuckshop operates on a Wednesday and Friday for both 1st and 2nd break and is run by our Tuckshop Covenor, Alison Hibberd. We greatly rely on our parent and community volunteers to work alongside Alison in the tuckshop. Don’t worry, you don’t need any prior experience, we will teach you everything you need to know. Jump on to the School24 volunteer roster and see if there are any dates that you may be able to assist. Even one shift per term would be amazing!
You can order your tuckshop directly through School24, or alternatively you can drop off your paper bag with a hand written order and money to the tuckshop on Wednesday and/or Friday morning.
Prep students will have their orders delivered to the Prep classrooms, all other students will have a class representative collect the class orders to be distributed.

Queensland School Library Week
About Queensland School Library Week (QSLW)
Queensland school libraries positively influence the learning outcomes of students through teaching multiple literacies and encouraging a lifelong love of learning and reading. In 2018, QSLA introduced the inaugural Queensland School Library Week (QSLW) to highlight the important work of school libraries. QSLW is celebrated in February each year. This year, the Queensland School Library Week is running from Monday the 10 of February until Friday the 14 of February 2025.
New Books
We have a selection of new books available for students to borrow. This collection includes picture books, fiction books, graphic novels, and information books. These books were all purchased using rewards earned from Scholastic book club at the end of 2024. Every purchase from book club and book fair earns Scholastic rewards which are allocated to the school library to purchase new reading books for our students. Students are welcome to make suggestions for books to purchase to include in our library collection – we love to hear what students enjoy reading and are happy to expand our collection of books.
A reminder that students will need a library bag to borrow books from the library. Using library bags protects books when transporting them to and from school and helps to extend the life of the book. Students who are in need of a Library bag can come to the Library to can make their own bag during lunch break in the maker space.
Books can be exchanged at first break and second break each day; students do not have to wait until their class borrowing day to exchange books.
Book Fair
Our annual school Book Fair will take place in Term 1 this year. In addition to promoting literacy and a love of reading, book fairs also provide a fun opportunity for children to see, touch and connect with books they want to read. An added benefit for the school is that each purchase from Book Fair earns rewards for the school Library that can be used to purchase new reading books for our students. Keep an eye out for information about Book in the coming weeks.
World Read Aloud Day
A big thank you to the students who brought along photos of themselves reading aloud to a friend or family member. We have loved sharing your contributions in our display. We hope everyone continues to make some time to read aloud to someone special.
Have a great week.
Brochures for Term 1 Book Club have been distributed to students and can also be viewed online. In this issue you'll find award-winning books and bestsellers, as well as old and new favourites. The books included in this issue span a wide range of children’s reading levels and interests with prices starting at just $3.
It is easy to order. The Book Club LOOP platform for parents allows you to pay by credit card. Your child’s order is submitted directly to school and the books will be delivered to their class. You can place your child’s order at scholastic.com.au/loop or by using the LOOP app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Alternatively, order forms with payment can be handed in at the school office. All orders placed through Book Club help to earn free reading books for the school library.
Orders are due Monday the 17th of February.
We have some wonderful news for our school and our students; our Story Dog: Humphrey has a new role as a therapy dog, which means that he can now meet and support a broader range of students.
Humphrey and his trainer Leesa are now accredited through 'Therapy and Support Animals- Australia" https://tasaa.com.au/ and volunteer their time on Friday mornings. It is amazing to watch how Humphrey can calm children in a way that only animals can and lovely to watch the bonds that grow between Leesa, Humphrey and our students.
I have attached a photo of Humphrey in his new 'therapy dog' jacket and some information provided by Leesa about how therapy dogs enhance the well-being and learning environment of staff and students.
If for any reason, your child can not interact with Humphrey or you would prefer them not to, could you please contact me via email: amell22@eq.edu.au or by phoning the school: 34256111.
With Humphrey and Leesa on board any ruff day can turn pawsome and we wanted to say thanks furry much to them both.
