School Opinion Survey
Thank you to all parents who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday, 16 August 2024. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve. To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2024. Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.
Our Year 5 and 6 students have also been emailed a survey link and our teachers will work with them to complete their survey, providing their feedback about what they think that our school does well and what areas we could work on. We love to include student voice in our classrooms and our school decision making.
Learning Walks and Talks – collaboration with our local schools
Yesterday, we welcomed local Principals and our School Supervisor to Dayboro SS to engage in our English teaching and learning processes and planning. It was wonderful to introduce these educators to our Year 5 students so that they could discuss their learning. Our students again showed amazing confidence in their learning and were able to communicate their understanding of the curriculum they are learning, their current goals and what they know they are doing well and how they track their learning. How fabulous that our students can clearly communicate their learning.
Our Year 5 teachers along with our Head of Department (Curriculum) then welcomed these school leaders to their planning session where they discussed the current student learning, set goals and planned for the next steps in teaching and learning. We are so lucky to have amazing teachers at our school enacting our Department’s Excellence and Equity strategy!
150 Years – What a celebration!
It was so amazing to celebrate our 150th year of schooling in the Dayboro area at the end of July. The students had an amazing day on the Friday, engaging in traditional games and fair games that you would have been familiar with in your school days – marbles, knuckles, elastics, sack races and bowling. Funnily enough, a favourite was visiting the olden day classroom in one of our historic buildings, where they met the very strict Mr Makepeace or Mrs Appleby conducting letter lessons. The History walk in our library was also a highlight as they scoured through the artefacts and photos while also watching the amazing film our past students Jodie Neilson and Tracey Neller designed, and another past student filmmaker Rusty Russian compiled. Charcoal still life drawings wrapped up our student celebration with lots of oohs and ahhhs as the old school bell signalled rotation changes and breaks.
Our staff and students are so proud at the moment to wear the commemorative badge donated by the P&C. Thanks P&C!
We could not have had such an amazing school and community celebration without an amazing Organising Committee. This team spent about 18 months organising these special events. I know that you will join me in thanking the organising committee!
There were also many, many community members and organisations who assisted us with our celebrations. Could I formally thank the following from our community for their contributions?
Bullying NO Way! Wear it Purple!
Our Student Council have been planning our special inclusion days for this term and there has been a bit of a change this year. Bullying NO WAY is now a week of action with the theme this year being: Everyone Belongs. Purple is the new hero colour representing Bullying No Way: National week of action and our commitment to standing against bullying.
At Dayboro SS, this theme sits well with us as we have used it to celebrate all of our Inclusion Calendar items: Harmony Day, Light it Up Blue, Wear it Purple
Our staff will be using the resources from the National Week of Action with its resources to embrace that Everyone Belongs in our community and make it clear that bullying, for any reason, is not tolerated. This week of action will now include our ‘Wear it Purple’ themes of respecting others regardless of gender or gender expectations. At Dayboro SS, we value diversity and speak often about the value in diversity of our community. Please join us in reminding our students that ALL community members are welcome at our school and we respect and include different cultures, strengths and challenges our students may have including disabilities and genders. We promote equity amongst our community and respectful relationships.
On Friday 16 August, we invite our students to wear purple. In our CSA, our Student Council will lead our students in saying the Bullying No Way pledge. Thanks for your help with this important concept.
Please find attached our updated Parent Calendar V4.

Dear Families and Friends
TRANSITIONS
At this time of year, we start to look forward to a very important part of our role here at Dayboro and that is educating our students for all settings and preparing them for change. Not only do we start to think about welcoming and providing information to our future Prep students and families for 2025 but we also begin to prepare our Yr. 6 students for the next phase of their education journey- the transition into high school.
Our Partnerships with both early educators and high schools are very important to us and we encourage their involvement and participation in our school as much as we can.
PREP 2025- ENROLMENTS ARE OPEN
Thank you to those parents who attended the PREP ENROLMENT INFORMATION session last Thursday afternoon. If you didn’t get a chance to attend, don’t worry, there is still plenty of time. Please see Jill at the office for an enrolment pack and make a time for an interview.
If you know of any families with eligible Prep 2025 children in our local area please let them know we are taking enrolments now.
Families that are out of catchment can still submit an enrolment form and will go on a waiting list. All families are notified before the end of the year if they have been accepted.
Prep 2025 interviews will take place on Thursday 10th October and Friday 11th October next term. (Times available throughout the day.) Please ring Jill for a time now.
Shortly, after these, we will hold another Prep Information session with more detail about what to expect in Prep. This session is scheduled for Thursday 7th November at 3:30pm.
We will also have two open mornings where Preps for 2025 and their parents are invited to attend and see Prep in action and learn more about our school. Monday 11th November 9-9:30 and Thursday 14th November 9-9:30am.
Throughout the year we have been lucky enough to have our local kindies visit some of our Prep readiness sessions where the children have got to meet different teachers in our school as well as take part in a range of school activities such as Art, Technology and French.
LEARNING P-2 ENGLISH -WRITING GOALS
PREP
This term Preps have been learning how to recognise and create rhymes. This week they have been making up their own rhyming pairs and adding them to an existing rhyme. By the end of this unit they will be writing their own rhymes and presenting them to an audience of their peers. Amazing!!

YEAR 1
The focus for Yr. 1 in English this term has been retelling a cultural story. Why? Because retelling stories from our past is how to keep cultures, memories and important events alive. The Yr. 1’s have been learning how to write interesting retells about a variety of cultural stories such as How the Birds Got their colours (Dreaming story), The Four Dragons (China) and many more…
Right now, they are learning to retell a story in a logical sequence with main ideas and characters to add interest. They have also created a Cultural Word Wall to reflect and help describe the setting of each story. Ask your Yr. 1 student what their writing goal is.

YEAR 2
Year 2 are learning how to create and present entertaining multimodal procedures. Over the last 2 weeks, they have been creating procedures for a specific purpose, to make delicious or disgusting food. They have chosen specific describing words and adverbs to help add interest and to fit the purpose.

HASS NEWS
Prep have been learning in their HASS Unit: My Special Places, about recognising places that are significant and of importance to them. They have been drawing simple designs of their special place like their classroom or bedroom and then using modelling clay to create these spaces in a 3D visual representation. This is a wonderful use of an age- appropriate pedagogy to engage and inspire our students in their learning.
See their transformations below:

IMPORTANT PBL NEWS!
Our Awards are: Be Kind, Be Positive, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Proud and Be Tolerant. The Principal’s Award is also given out each week.

These students are spotted by other teachers in the playgrounds and classrooms and rewarded for doing the right thing with a GOTCHA award. They then go into the draw box where very week 4 students names are pulled out of the box. The winners receive a prize from the Prize Box and an ice block voucher.
- School supervision starts at 8:15am We have some children arriving at school much earlier than this. Please ensure they arrive at the right time. We have a great Helping Hands Before and after school service that may help with your needs.
- Please, please… especially at this time of year …please keep your child at home if sick. We understand that it may take a few days to recover and you can easily communicate this via QParents or our Absence line.

Library and Maker Space News
Reading is Magic
We have had a number of students getting into the spirit of Book Week 2024 by learning the secrets of magicians. They have been working carefully to prepare and perform magic tricks for one another using the kits (and disguises) we have recently added to our Maker Space.
Book Week
Our annual Book Week celebrations are scheduled for 19th – 23rd of August.
Our school Character Costume Parade will be held on Wednesday the 21st of August from 9:15 a.m. on the oval.
We are changing our Character Costume Parade arrangements slightly. This year we would like to acknowledge more of the students who make the effort to come along in a book themed costume. The goal of our costume parade is to build excitement in children’s literature and to encourage maximum participation in Book Week. This year, each student who participates in our costume parade will have their name put into a lucky draw to win a book prize. There will be one book prize per class. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prizes that have been awarded in previous years will not be part of our celebrations this year. We will still have certificates acknowledging costumes that align with our fun categories as well as other competitions in the lead up to Book Week. This year’s theme is “Reading is Magic”.
Students are welcome to come and work in the maker space on Fridays at first break to create costume elements in preparation for the costume parade in August.
Meerkat Productions is returning this year to perform a live-action retelling of two of the books that have been nominated to win prizes during Book Week. This year’s books are “Timeless” for lower school students and “Being Jimmy Baxter” for upper school students. We hope everyone is able to join us for these events. The cost to attend these sessions is $9.00 per student. Invoices for payment to attend have been sent to families.
Due date for payment to attend is August 16th.
During Book Week each year the Children’s Book Council of Australia award prizes to Australian authors in 6 different categories. This year’s shortlisted books for the New Illustrator section are shown below:
Our pick for this category is “Raised by Moths”. We enjoyed the way the illustrator used colour to depict points of light throughout the book.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2024 is still running. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books. Reading record sheets are available from class teachers and from the Library. The reading period for the Premier’s Reading Challenge will close on the 23rd of August. Recording sheets will need to be returned to class teachers so that students who have completed the challenge can receive their certificates later in the year. We will also be looking for the student in each class who has read the greatest number of books during the challenge.
Have a great week!
WORDS OF WELLBEING
As a part of next week’s Bully No Way - National Week of Action” we are looking at inclusivity with a theme of “Everyone belongs”. This is a great opportunity for young people to look at treating others the way they would like to be treated, being aware of theirs and others actions, and working on and through their own responses and feelings. As adults we go through life’s ups and downs and hopefully learn that we are in this together, not alone, and find a sense a belonging and in turn connectedness and support amongst others - This too is true for our young people. As we continue to empower young people in their own wellbeing and explore strategies and values that will help them in their everyday lives, we also encourage them to seek support where needed. What a fantastic values enriched school we are a part of here with many approachable and caring teachers, wellbeing team and staff. A great resource to step through your child/ren in (or bring some simple wording and starting points to conversations around feelings, interactions and life’s ups and downs) is the kids helpline website. I encourage everyone to follow the link below and see if it is something that could be beneficial for you and your family.
