Enriching our Learning
We love to enrich our students’ learning with real life experiences including our incursion and excursion opportunities. Recently our P&C assisted our students to have a real-life shopping experience at the Mothers’ Day stall. What a wonderful way to practically understand about product selection, value for money, calculating change etc. At Dayboro, we have a lovely tradition of our students visiting their siblings’ classrooms to share their purchases to ensure that Mum is receiving a variety of goodies!

Our Year 1 and 2 students participated on the Dayboro Town Walk last week using landmarks and local community places to understand their local area and how they can care for Dayboro. Later this week our Year 3 and 5 students will participate in the Star Lab incursion.

Our staff do an amazing job of planning, preparing and enacting these fabulous learning experiences and often rely on extra assistance from parents, guardians or other volunteers to support on the day. A reminder that it is super important for our volunteers or family members, other than parents of our students to have a blue card to volunteer at our school, attend and incursion or excursion or attend school events where they need to interact with our students. Our P&C representatives and Tucker Box volunteers who are not parents of our students also must have a blue card before they can be onsite. Thank you for helping us by abiding by this legal requirement, if you need assistance to apply for a blue card, you can visit our school office, ask a P&C member or apply online.
150years Celebration
We are so excited to be celebrating our 150 years of schooling in Dayboro this year. Our dynamic committee continues to plan and organise the School Events for 26 July and our community Event for 27 July. Thank you to all our community volunteers and partners for helping us to plan a fabulous community event!
Please see our invitation and flyer below:

At this years’ Dayboro Day, we will be participating in the parade to celebrate our 150years of schooling! We are looking for any old varieties of Dayboro State School uniforms for our students to wear in the parade. Please let our admin staff know if you can assist: 34256111; Admin@dayboross.eq.edu.au. Why not come along to see our students march on the day?

Dear Families and Friends
Next Friday, we celebrate and recognise what it means to be Under 8!
The theme this year is “Connecting to Culture Through Play.”
This is an exciting theme, as it highlights and celebrates the ability of play to break down barriers and bring children together, as well as helping them to understand more about themselves and each other.
We take great pride in our links with the community and we are so fortunate to have many facets of our community involved in our Under 8’s celebration- our local kindies, our police and emergency services, the Scouts, local high schools and many more help out on the day.
It takes a village working together to create curious, civic-minded, caring, engaged and successful learners for life. How lucky are we in Dayboro to be able to work together and wrap our support as a community around our learners.
Under 8’s Day this week will be celebrated at Dayboro State School on Friday May 24th. See details below. Parents and friends of our younger children in P-2 are invited to come along and celebrate with us! Many thanks to our hardworking P-2 team who have organised this event!
Pedagogy in Practice- how do our teachers use effective and age-appropriate pedagogies and strategies to move students forward in their learning.
Exciting pedagogies and strategies that help young children understand how stories work include- story maps, puppet shows, Inside/Outside Character descriptions, action walks, acting it out, Who am I?, character profiles, character sociograms, retelling rabbit. Our teachers include these age appropriate and engaging pedagogies every day in their teaching. In my regular visits to classes this term, I have been delighted to talk with students who have been working so hard on their next steps in English for Term 2. The students can clearly articulate what they need to work on to improve their writing. This term, P-2 classes have been looking at Narratives and in particular exploring, what makes stories interesting- characters, events, settings, plot etc.
Some responses have been:
Prep: Retelling and sharing a favourite story
PJ Aiden – I am learning to retell the Gingerbread and writing sentences that start with First and Then. Retelling Rabbit helps me remember the parts of the story.
PC Harrison- I’m learning about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I remember the things that happen in the story. I can use puppets to help me retell.
Year 1: Character Descriptions
1A Henry- We are learning how to use adjectives to describe the character in When Henry Caught Imaginitis. Henry is the main character. I need to write a sentence about his actions at the end of the story.
1D Lawson-I am writing about how the Blue Thingamajig looks. I can use the word Because in my sentence to describe how he changes at the end. I need to learn more action words to use.
Year 2: Comparing the same characters in different versions of a story and expressing a preference.
Max 2B- I’m learning about how to describe a characters’ thoughts, actions, qualities and feelings> I need to work on comparing two characters and what the sentences to do this will be like.
Molly 2D- I’m learning about comparing Stinky Jack and Jack form Jack and the Beanstalk. I can talk about their similarities and differences using adjectives and verbs but I need to write about which character I prefer and why.
I love to ask these 5 questions about their learning
*What are you learning?
*How are you going?
*How do you know?
*How can you improve?
*Where do you go for help?
These are also great questions for parents to ask their children about their learning and help prompt conversations about learning at school.

Building a national picture of child health- PREP students
From May 2024, our school, along with thousands of others across the country, will participate in the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC).
The AEDC is a teacher-completed census of our Prep students (similar to a questionnaire) which provides a comprehensive picture of how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.
The AEDC is an Australian Government Initiative and is completed nationally every three years.
Children don’t miss any class time while the AEDC is completed, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information.
The data collected through the AEDC is used by schools, communities and governments to better understand children and families’ needs, and identify the services, resources and support they need.
AEDC data is reported at a school, community, state/territory and national level. AEDC results for individual children are not reported and the AEDC is not used as an individual diagnostic tool.
Some teachers have found that completing the AEDC made them more aware of the needs of individual children and their class, and that the data was useful for planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary, however the AEDC relies on all schools with children in their first year of full-time school participating in the collection. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the AEDC and how it is being used to help children and families visit: www.aedc.gov.au.
Wednesday 22 May is school photo day.

To assist our families with any last minute requirements, any orders placed through School24 before 9am Tuesday morning will be packed and provided to the students ready for collection on Tuesday afternoon.

Robotics
On the 2nd of May nominated students from Year 4 and Year 5 participated in a robotics immersion day at Kurwongbah State School. We had a very busy day of coding, robot modification, and friendly competition. Well done to all participating students, you certainly learned a lot throughout the day.
Readers Cup
During the last week of term one, ten students from across Year 5 and Year 6 have been preparing for the upcoming Readers Cup competition. This competition requires students to read five novels (generally more than once) so that they know as much about the books as possible. On the day of the competition the teams participate in five rounds of questioning where they answer collaboratively to earn points. There are still a few weeks of reading ahead before the day of the competition. We would like to wish these students the best as they continue to prepare for their competition on the 5th of June.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The 2024 Premiers Reading Challenge reading period is now open. To complete the challenge students in Prep – Year 2 need to read or experience 20 books, students in Year 3 and Year 4 need to read 20 books, and students in Year 5 and Year 6 need to read 15 books (this number of books acknowledges that older students are more likely to select longer and more complex books). The reader record form is available from the library and from class teachers. Completed forms need to be returned to classroom teachers and we will be looking for the child in each class who is able to read the greatest number of books as part of this challenge.
Students in all year levels are welcome to join in with the 24th annual National Simultaneous Storytime event on the 22nd of May during first break at the Library. Students are welcome to visit the display in the Library and to join in with some of our celebration activities during the breaks throughout week.
This year is the 28th year of National Family Reading Month which celebrates and encourages families reading together. Why not take the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge? To participate in the 31 Day Family Reading Challenge simply read for a minimum of 10 minutes each day and mark the day’s reading on the record chart. The reading record chart is available from the Library and is also included below. Students who return their completed reading chart will receive a certificate of participation.
Have a great week!
